When I was a kid my Dad gave me an old heavy padlock to play with in the hopes I would learn something while I figured how to open it, since he'd lost the keys many years ago. I had free roaming rights in his workshop, and he gave me some basic insight into the workings of padlocks, so with the aid of some 1/16" piano wire, pliers and a set of warding files, I managed it. I still have that padlock and the piece of piano wire, 64 years later.

I don't know how many times I watch those secret agents on TV as a child and tried opening door locks with a paperclip or a metal nail file. Later in life I had a general understand of how locks worked, but your video totally explains everything I never knew about lock picking. I just have one question. I am 61 now. Do you think it is too late for me to start a life of crime, or should I just stick to sitting in my recliner eating chips and my diet Coke and watch James Bond do it on TV? :) Thanks again. If you have the inclination to start a life of crime, remember you need more lessons on how to bypass CCTV, subdue the dog, and also run away quickly (@61 that is). Just understanding how to pick locks is just half the story. You better be at home eating chips, and not in jail. lol. I have seen people tampering energy meters but their expertise lay in getting through the paper void seals, not just the electricals.

If you are looking for minimal investment www.banggood.com has some decent offerings the only problem is their tension wrenches are not great. These picks are okay but you might want to sand them down to make them thinner. They are 0.030 inch thick most picks are 0.020 to 0.025.

Thank you for a very informative video, starting with a 'simple' lock. To all the 'expert' detractors (who don't seem to offer any instructional videos of any nature), it's such a shame we aren't ALL born experts. Yes, there are more complex locks available but some of us 'mere mortals' have to start with the basics and gradually build on that knowledge. It seems, by the detractors' theory, brain surgery should be taught on day-one of medical school - or perhaps kindergarten. It's very easy to deride - not so easy to be constructive and informative.

A very good demonstration on how locks work. Thank you very much. May be I can now go and pick the drug dealer's lock on next street to locate the stuff he took from me. Joke aside, I realized that there is a "Master Key" option in my local hardware store. It is called a battery powered angle grinder. My garage was broken into despite being padlocked. So I went and bought an "unbreakable" padlock mad of toughened steel at three time the price of a normal lock. I went away and foolishly believed that my garage will be fine. When I came home, the entire lock was gone, and the garage was cleaned out comprehensively, again! This video will help me to break my own lock, but burglars will not bother with messing around. They would go for the "nuclear" option, ie. an angle grinder.

Working on and around many different vehicles almost every day means I often need the services of a locksmith. I usually can't afford a locksmith and I attempt to do the work myself. My success rate as a self taught hack locksmith is less than 50/50.😒☹️ I'm very confident I'll be able to improve that success rate after learning from you how tumbler and pin locking mechanisms work and how they can be picked. Thank you dude.

That sounds like a very poor personal practice and I do not encourage that. Lock sport is about picking locks you own and ones not in use.

This has to be the one of the easiest locks to pick I've ever seen. Regardless, very educational for those who are new to such.

Lol, changing out the batteries is not the problem, thanks for noticing though! Maybe it is my little easter egg.

Ha! Thought I was the only one that noticed that. I thought it was my smoke detector at first
