  • I go over all of my favorite and most used alternate fingerings for piccolo in the middle and upper registers. Alternate fingerings for A, B flat, B, C, C sharp, D, high E, high F sharp, high G, high B flat and high B natural. Also, with examples of where to use alternate fingerings in orchestral parts and excertps.

Hi Julie, your video was very helpful. I am struggling to find a nice sounding High B flat on pic for the Carmen suite 2 NO 6 March. I have recently bought a Burkart Resona and love it. Any tips would be extremely helpful to lower the stress levels!!

I don’t have my piccolo right now to try out options (it’s in the shop), but I believe I have played that nasty high Bb with the 2nd trill key instead of 1st trill key. Hope that helps!

So many useful things! I have a question and it's meant to be in a respectful tone. Why are so many of your notes so flat? My c# sounds like your alt fingering when I play it normal. Same with high G.
My mancke headjoint has improved the high F# speaking issue so much.
The high Ab thing is for sure useful!

That’s a great question! Generally, all alternate fingerings raise the pitch a bit for piccolo. Can’t really lower the pitch on piccolo like you can on flute. Headjoint is out far enough so that notes like middle c - g are exactly at 440 and that make other notes, like high D or high G flat. Glad your Mancke is helping so much with intonation and high F#! I’ve heard great things about those hj’s. 👍🪈🎶

@juliarichter5897 yes I know this. So your piccolo must have different tendencies than mine. When my headjoint is set so that my tuning note is 440 or wherever it needs to be for that group, I don't need any of these fingerings to raise my pitches. They're correct with normal fingerings. The exception being high Ab.

This video is really useful, thank you so much! I only have one question, are there some alternative fingerings for high G? Thanks!

The only one I know of is: LH 1st & 3rd finger, no thumb. RH 2nd (middle) finger & 3rd (ring) finger and pinky. It raises the pitch, but tone color isn't that great and you have to have faster airstream for it to speak.

Are there alternatives for high B natural? I think the video skips ahead to high C haha

I wish there was an alt fingering for high B natural! Nothing that I know of tho. Only thing that helps is keeping RH pinky up and making sure headjoint is pulled out a good amount.

I do! Ive tried to attach the pdf in the comments but it doesn’t seem to be possible or I am just doing it wrong. If you send me your email, I can send the fingering chart pdf to you. 👍
