Best Fantasy: The Seventh Seal Best Superhero: The Dark Knight, there can be only one. Best Rom Com: Shaun of The Dead maybe, again I don’t watch a lot of rom coms lol. Great video as always!
AMADEUS is so good! I had no idea it was a broadway show! 😮 I’ve read 2001 Space Odyssey but still haven’t made it all the way through the movie 😅. I love that it starts with Strauss’s Also Sprach Zarathustra. 😊 Legend, Labyrinth, Princess Bride, and Return of the King are some of my favorite movies! I don’t think I could choose. That’s like choosing which finger to chop off. 😫 When Harry Met Sally is so good!!! Loved this! ❤
From what i know 2001 is not an adaptation, the book is actually a novelization of the movie...Arthur Clarke wrote it as he was writing the script for the movie with Kubrick
Kubrick and Clarke worked on both at the same time. Book and flick. The flick was released first but I feel the novel is more than just a novelization of the movie. Chicken and egg kinda thing 😀
Hey! No idea if Lila has one or not but my Letterboxd is just jakobminton. I don’t use it much but my four favorites are on there and I still stand by them!
Speaking of personal favourites, there are two constants I have always had on my top 5: The Historical War Drama «Master & Commander» from 2003 by Peter Weir and the Musical Comedy «Blues Brothers» from 1980 by John Landis. I always have a though choice choosing my favorite David Lean movie between «Lawrence of Arabia» and «Dr. Zhivago», right now I will go for «Dr. Zhivago» (Julie Christie as Lara might be the most beautiful person that have ever existed!). Ingmar Bergman’s «The Seventh Seal» from 1957: It is downright fascinating how one of the most iconic, reflected and life-affirming movies ever was made on a shoestring budget! And since I am in a Romantic mood (as my pick of «Dr. Zhivago» also might indicate), I will choose «A Room With A View» from 1985 by James Ivory to round up my Top 5 favourites!😄
@@Talking_Story It is amazing! «The Usual Suspects» and «Legend» are also fantastic choices! «Alien»/«Aliens» for me on Creature Feature and Ridley Scott’s «Blade Runner» is also a good choice on Sci-Fi! Action Movie I kinda have to divide into straightforward, such as John Woo’s «Hard Boiled» from 1992 or Brian de Palma’s «The Untouchables» from 1987, and chessy: 1989’s «Road House» or Tony Scott’s «Top Gun»! 😄
I won’t hit all the categories, but here’s some of my personal faves: Drama - Rain Man Action - Raiders of the Lost Ark or John Wick (Die Hard is awesome…but it’s a Christmas movie! 😁) Comedy - Coming To America Western - “Say when…” Tombstone! Creature Feature - Jaws or American Werewolf in London (but The Fly is solid) Sci-fi - Back to the Future Superhero - Superman: The Movie (Dark Knight is objectively better, but my argument is without Donner’s Superman, we may not have the category as it is today at all) Whodunnit - The aforementioned Clue, but Seven and Usual Suspects are up there for the serious whodunnits. Satire - Robocop Sports flick - Agree with Rocky wholeheartedly!
I'm kinda a weirdo when it comes to movies. I love movies but haven't watched that many if I'm being honest 😅 Plus I struggle to remember which movies I have watched. If I hear the title or see the cover/poster I can go "Oh yeah I remember now" XD But here are some of my favorites that I can think of. Spider man 2 (from the original trilogy) Alien/Aliens (can't choose between the two) Crocodile Dundee 1 and two (again can't pick between these) Jönssonligan (the first 5 movies) (This is a series of Swedish Heist comedies. Probably a classic by now in Sweden. That intro music is so iconic!)
@@Talking_Story I'm not sure if there is english subtitles for them unfortunatly. But the intro theme you can listen to on youtube if you're interested :)
Drama: the Pianist or american history x (the Fly is drama), the fall (2006) Comedy: ace ventura, bridget Jones, holt grail, clue, naked gun Musical: alan wake2 Creater feature: Lake placid (Thing, alien is psychological horror, fly body horror, they are not realy creater featuer) History: Gladiator, breaveheart Who Done it: The girl with the dragon tatoo, clue, identity Western: tomestone, 11:30 to yuma, the best: hell or high water Sports flick: hardball, worrior, point break, Sf: Event horizon, immortal(enki bilal), Fountain Action: logan, who i am, twister, bourne ultimatum Fantasy: legend, everything everywhere all at once Superhero: unbreakable the best ever of All Satair: Hot fuzz, tropic thunder, idiocracy Rom com: romancing the stone, emma
Best drama is tough. 12 Angry is really good. My favorite comedy- either Holy Grail or Rat Race. Musical- either Sound of music or Chicago. Creature feature for me has to be Aliens. But the Fly is really good too. Oh and Jaws. Ugh. Tough category. Amadeus is amazing, it’s probably the movie that made period pieces one of my favorites. Schindler’s List is amazing also. Cinematically I think Schindler’s List would have to win for me. My favorite western is old school How the West Was Won. Both True Grit movies are awesome. Sports movie is SO hard. I love all the Rocky movies, but I almost like Creed movies better. We are Marshal is amazing, Secretariet I love also but it’s not in the same league. My favorite movie type is sweeping historical epics however and my favorite movie is Last of the Mohicans with Daniel Day Lewis. It’s the perfect combination of action, romance, amazing musical score, and stunning cinematography. Sci fi is really rough to pick- 2001 is amazing, but it’s so different from movies like Aliens or the amazing Close Encounters of a Third Time. Mad Max movies are great. All the LoTR movies and amazing, my nostalgia fantasy pick would be The Neverending Story. Superhero would have to be Superman v Batman- it’s so frustrating and has so much tension. Rom-com of course When Harry met Sally.
You had some great choices. My selections would be: Best Drama: The Departed Jakob picked the right comedy in Holy Grail Best musical: Hamilton I love the Thing, but to sway you on creature feature, I would say Jurassic Park. Jakob again picked the best Action in Fury Road Best Period Piece: The Patriot or Gladiator. You chose a good whodunit, but to sway you I would say Clue Best Sci Fi: Ex Machina Sports Flick: Rudy Fantasy: Two Towers or Return of the King You had the best superhero choice To sway you on Satire, I would say Big Trouble in Little China. Rom Com: You've got mail This was a fun video, I liked seeing all of your choices.
These are my ever changing list Loved the video guys! Drama - Nightcrawler Comedy - In Bruge Musical - Charlie and the chocolate Factory (the original althought Wonka i enjoyed!) Creature Feature - Alien Period Piece - There will be Blood (not sure if its a period piece but its great) Whodunnit - Memories of Murder Western - The Revenant Sports Flick - I Tonya Sci-fi - Blade Runner 2049 (Sorry John but the new one is slight better than the original in my opinion) Fantasy - Lord of the Rings Return of the king Superhero - i preferred Batman Begins to the Dark knight for some reason Satire - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri (i'm not sure if this counts) Rom Com - Rye Lane
In my opinion -: Best Drama:- Tokyo Story Best Comedy - Superbad Best Musical - La La Land Best Creature Feature - Alien Best Period Piece - Seven Samurai Best Whodunnit - Memories of Murder Best Western - The Good The Bad and The Ugly Best Sports - Raging Bull Best Sci-fi - The End of Evangelion Best Action - Gladiator Best Fantasy - Return of The King Best Superhero - The Dark Knight Best Satire - The Great Dictator Best Rom-Com - Chungking Express
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest IS good, but drama... Dead Poets Society, hands down. Comedy, gotta disagree with you. Princess Bride. Although I'm a huge fan of When Harry Met Sally. (note, I made this list AS I was watching :P I think of this as a comedy more than a fantay) Musical - The Music Man. I will agree with you on Creature Feature. Period Piece - Amadeus is good, I was leaning Braveheart, but I think Jakob swayed me with Schindler's List. That movie was so good. Whodunit? Yes, The Usual Suspects is untouchable. Seven was good too, but nope. Although Kevin Spacey is representing :) Western, I'm leaning The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Sports - Rocky got me. I was leaning towards Remember the Titans or The Natural. Might be a three way tie. SciFi, I'm not sure any of them stand out to me. I did like Armageddon. And The Quiet Place. Action - unpopular pick, but I'm going with The Bourne Identity with a campy shoutout to Best of the Best (no, it's not great, but I still love that stupid movie). Fantasy, well I put Princess Bride in comedy so I screwed myself there :D Um, maybe The Seventh Seal. Super hero - Logan. Hands down. Or would that be claws down? IF they'd had Sabretooth in the roll of Logan's clone, it would have been absolutely perfect. Satire, I got nothing :D RomCom... well I didn't know you were picking that so yes, When Harry Met Sally wins here. Take care of that cauliflower ear, John ;)
@@Talking_Story I would highly recommend anything Studio Ghibli. I really love Princess mononoke, Castle in the sky, Porco Rosso, and howls moving castle. Other classic series to watch I'd recommend are cowboy bebop, Vinland saga, Fullmetal alchemist: Brotherhood, Gurren Lagan, Mobile suit gundum unicorn ( or any Universal century series) and code geass. I'd also recommend anime inspired series such as blue eye samurai, avatar the last Airbender, and castlevania. Also recommend the across and into the Spiderverse films since they are heavily inspired by anime.
@@calebwelch6393 I have watched that first Spidey film and loved it. I don’t watch alot anymore with the amount I read and after all my time in the theatre if I am gonna watch something I usually want to watch an actor work as opposed to a voice performance. Having said that I should take myself outside my comfort zone and do something new so I really appreciate this list. I will tell you if you are a Full Metal Alchemist fan you may really enjoy our guest for the Artist’s Journey coming up in June.
Drama: Cool Hand Luke Comedy: Fish Called Wanda (Raising Arizona Ok though) Musical: Hair Creature: Jaws History: ? Western: The Outlaw Josey Wales. Satire: Eyes Wide Shut (see what I done there) Satire!
I'm not sure if Everything Everywhere All at Once counts as a superhero or a comedy (I'd say it's both) but I'd say that has to be up there for superhero. Comedy for me would be Hot Fuzz, no question.
@@Talking_Story Oh absolutely! I'm surprised there was no mention of Martin McDonagh, I think you mentioned him in Chatting with Nutts and said he's your favourite playwright. I think In Bruges and Banshees of Inisherin both are excellent films!
Gotta go with Good, Bad & the Ugly. Coen Brother's True Grit is great too. Never cared for that John Wayne bollocks 🤣 My favourite action film is The Raid. Its an Indonesian martial arts film. Pan's Labyrinth is a great period piece, Spain during the 2nd World War and its Fantasy with weird creatures. Superhero Spider-man 2 Fantasy Princess Bride Romcom Scott Pilgrim vs the World 10 Things I Hate About You Definitely Maybe Satire Office Space
I’m not going through all of them! Haha. But sci-fi Star Wars original. But there are so many great ones. Action-love die hard but John wick has it beat! Fantasy definitely lord of the rings.
Some of the best dramas: La Dolce Vita, Opening Night, This Sporting Life. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is not a drama, but a melodrama, and there's a big difference. Best comedy, for me, is Everything is Illuminated, which is also a significantly better story about the holocaust than that cliched nonsense Schindler's List.
I will say with the heightened characters and events you could say Cuckoo’s Nest could be considered melodrama. So for drama I will go with Ordinary People. Have not seen Everything is Illuminated yet but I will for sure put it on my list. Thanks!
Best musical is les mis or carousel Best creature feature for me is sleepwalkers Period piece titanic Who done it shutter island Western the magnificent 7 Spots flick warrior Sci fi predator Action flick red Fantasy legend or krull Superhero black panther (but heath ledger is classic) Satire American psycho Rom com 50 first dates
@@Talking_Story There is the Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack for legend and then there is the soundtrack done by the band Tangerine Dream. There soundtrack is more 80s synth music than orchestral. It was used for the original theatrical release of Legend.
@@Talking_Story oooooh you gotta watch the directors cut of Legend at some point. Jerry Goldsmith orchestral score fits so so well with the film. The Tangerine Dream music was incorporated into the theatrical cut as a means of making the film appeal to younger audiences. Best SF: either A Clockwork Orange or 2001. It’s an impossible gambit.
Best Fantasy: The Seventh Seal
Best Superhero: The Dark Knight, there can be only one.
Best Rom Com: Shaun of The Dead maybe, again I don’t watch a lot of rom coms lol.
Great video as always!
You had great picks! Would expect nothing less from my Booktube nephew!
John! I don’t have time to both read and watch EVERYTHING you guys recommend!
Welcome to my world! 😂
I agree with dark knight BUT Logan was pretty amazing. A western given an X-men wallpaper
It was great’
AMADEUS is so good! I had no idea it was a broadway show! 😮
I’ve read 2001 Space Odyssey but still haven’t made it all the way through the movie 😅. I love that it starts with Strauss’s Also Sprach Zarathustra. 😊
Legend, Labyrinth, Princess Bride, and Return of the King are some of my favorite movies! I don’t think I could choose. That’s like choosing which finger to chop off. 😫
When Harry Met Sally is so good!!!
Loved this! ❤
Thanks so much Johanna and please no finger cutting!
The production we saw had David Suchet starring and Peter Hall directing. It was a monumental production that I carry with me.
And such a great book! Clarke was such an original thinker
@@edoardoserpelloni8311 absolutely!
Would love to know if your son or lila has letterboxd! I would love to see their top picks!
Hey! No idea if Lila has one or not but my Letterboxd is just jakobminton. I don’t use it much but my four favorites are on there and I still stand by them!
@@jakobminton awesome thank you so much
Speaking of personal favourites, there are two constants I have always had on my top 5: The Historical War Drama «Master & Commander» from 2003 by Peter Weir and the Musical Comedy «Blues Brothers» from 1980 by John Landis.
Lawrence of Arabia is amazing!
@@MacScarfield yes! Bring on those cheesy choices!
I won’t hit all the categories, but here’s some of my personal faves:
Drama - Rain Man
Action - Raiders of the Lost Ark or John Wick (Die Hard is awesome…but it’s a Christmas movie! 😁)
Comedy - Coming To America
Western - “Say when…” Tombstone!
Creature Feature - Jaws or American Werewolf in London (but The Fly is solid)
Sci-fi - Back to the Future
Superhero - Superman: The Movie (Dark Knight is objectively better, but my argument is without Donner’s Superman, we may not have the category as it is today at all)
Whodunnit - The aforementioned Clue, but Seven and Usual Suspects are up there for the serious whodunnits.
Satire - Robocop
Sports flick - Agree with Rocky wholeheartedly!
Tough to argue against some of those Stephen! Thanks my friend.
Agreed! Now hand over that Nerf! You have one untouched ear that needs some attention!
@@JustBSingProductions 😂
What a great video! Amadeus was a great, unexpected pick!
Thanks guys!
Spider man 2 (from the original trilogy)
Alien/Aliens (can't choose between the two)
Crocodile Dundee 1 and two (again can't pick between these)
Jönssonligan (the first 5 movies) (This is a series of Swedish Heist comedies. Probably a classic by now in Sweden. That intro music is so iconic!)
Awesome list! Gonna look the Swedish series of flicks up.
@@Talking_Story I'm not sure if there is english subtitles for them unfortunatly. But the intro theme you can listen to on youtube if you're interested :)
@@emzstern I will find it
Raising Arizona is probably my favorite comedy too!
Yes!!
Drama: the Pianist or american history x (the Fly is drama), the fall (2006)
Comedy: ace ventura, bridget Jones, holt grail, clue, naked gun
Musical: alan wake2
Creater feature: Lake placid (Thing, alien is psychological horror, fly body horror, they are not realy creater featuer)
History: Gladiator, breaveheart
Who Done it: The girl with the dragon tatoo, clue, identity
Western: tomestone, 11:30 to yuma, the best: hell or high water
Sports flick: hardball, worrior, point break,
Sf: Event horizon, immortal(enki bilal), Fountain
Action: logan, who i am, twister, bourne ultimatum
Fantasy: legend, everything everywhere all at once
Superhero: unbreakable the best ever of All
Satair: Hot fuzz, tropic thunder, idiocracy
Rom com: romancing the stone, emma
Wow what an awesome list. So many are favs of mine I did not think of in the moment. Thanks!
Amazing choices! Thanks so much for sharing.
You had some great choices. My selections would be:
Best Drama: The Departed
Jakob picked the right comedy in Holy Grail
Best musical: Hamilton
I love the Thing, but to sway you on creature feature, I would say Jurassic Park.
Jakob again picked the best Action in Fury Road
Best Period Piece: The Patriot or Gladiator.
You chose a good whodunit, but to sway you I would say Clue
Best Sci Fi: Ex Machina
Sports Flick: Rudy
Fantasy: Two Towers or Return of the King
You had the best superhero choice
To sway you on Satire, I would say Big Trouble in Little China.
Rom Com: You've got mail
This was a fun video, I liked seeing all of your choices.
Awesome choices! You could busy shooting a lot of darts😂
These are my ever changing list Loved the video guys!
Drama - Nightcrawler
Comedy - In Bruge
Musical - Charlie and the chocolate Factory (the original althought Wonka i enjoyed!)
Creature Feature - Alien
Period Piece - There will be Blood (not sure if its a period piece but its great)
Whodunnit - Memories of Murder
Western - The Revenant
Sports Flick - I Tonya
Sci-fi - Blade Runner 2049 (Sorry John but the new one is slight better than the original in my opinion)
Fantasy - Lord of the Rings Return of the king
Superhero - i preferred Batman Begins to the Dark knight for some reason
Satire - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri (i'm not sure if this counts)
Rom Com - Rye Lane
Great choices all. My fav playwright makes 2 appearances in your list couldn’t be happier!
@@Talking_Story Martin Mcdonagh? I went to see The Pillowman at my local theatre and I really enjoyed it! :)
@@OhaDollar thats the 1! Love Pillowman!
In my opinion -:
Best Drama:- Tokyo Story
Best Comedy - Superbad
Best Musical - La La Land
Best Creature Feature - Alien
Best Period Piece - Seven Samurai
Best Whodunnit - Memories of Murder
Best Western - The Good The Bad and The Ugly
Best Sports - Raging Bull
Best Sci-fi - The End of Evangelion
Best Action - Gladiator
Best Fantasy - Return of The King
Best Superhero - The Dark Knight
Best Satire - The Great Dictator
Best Rom-Com - Chungking Express
@@FilmyDost007 Amazing choices thanks so much for sharing them. I do love La La Land and Alien!
I would've went with Raimi's Spider-Man 2
Very solid choice!
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest IS good, but drama... Dead Poets Society, hands down.
Comedy, gotta disagree with you. Princess Bride. Although I'm a huge fan of When Harry Met Sally. (note, I made this list AS I was watching :P I think of this as a comedy more than a fantay)
Musical - The Music Man.
Although Kevin Spacey is representing :)
Western, I'm leaning The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
Satire, I got nothing :D
RomCom... well I didn't know you were picking that so yes, When Harry Met Sally wins here.
Take care of that cauliflower ear, John ;)
Awesome picks my friend!
I'm disappointed none of y'all listed any anime or anime films.
I have not been a big anime watcher. Where should I start?
I have some movies to watch! Loved watching this!
Thanks so much!
Love this video, I think the same thing but with TV Shows would be funny too.
Great idea!
Drama: Cool Hand Luke
Comedy: Fish Called Wanda (Raising Arizona Ok though)
Musical: Hair
Creature: Jaws
History: ?
Western: The Outlaw Josey Wales.
Satire: Eyes Wide Shut (see what I done there) Satire!
Did see what u did there. Fish Called Wanda hadn’t thought of that 1 in a while. Great picks!
With the exception of Lord of the rings, Gladiator is my fav!!
Gladiator is awful cool!
Zoolander is the best comedy, obviously
Blue Steel
I'm not sure if Everything Everywhere All at Once counts as a superhero or a comedy (I'd say it's both) but I'd say that has to be up there for superhero.
Comedy for me would be Hot Fuzz, no question.
Shaun of the Dead is great too!
@@Talking_Story Oh absolutely!
I'm surprised there was no mention of Martin McDonagh, I think you mentioned him in Chatting with Nutts and said he's your favourite playwright. I think In Bruges and Banshees of Inisherin both are excellent films!
@@maxt5319 they absolutely are! Don’t quite make the all time movie list but I love that guys stuff!
The Natural for sports movie
I love The Dark Knight but my favorite will always be Winter Soldier
The Natural is a great choice!
And crazy stupid love!
My wife hit me with that 1 after we shot. Yes!!
John, what would be your pick for best book to movie adaptation? Bonus for a fantasy if it's not already your top pick!
Shawshank Redemption, Stand by Me both amazing adaptations.
I think my pick would be The Last of the Mohicans.
@@Zivilin Daniel Day Lewis always great!
Best superhero movie... Watchmen!
Nice!
Gotta go with Good, Bad & the Ugly. Coen Brother's True Grit is great too. Never cared for that John Wayne bollocks 🤣
My favourite action film is The Raid. Its an Indonesian martial arts film.
Pan's Labyrinth is a great period piece, Spain during the 2nd World War and its Fantasy with weird creatures.
Superhero
Spider-man 2
Fantasy
Princess Bride
Romcom
Scott Pilgrim vs the World
10 Things I Hate About You
Definitely Maybe
Satire
Office Space
Oh those are some great 1s!
I’m not going through all of them! Haha. But sci-fi Star Wars original. But there are so many great ones. Action-love die hard but John wick has it beat! Fantasy definitely lord of the rings.
John Wick is way up there! So goood!
John, Mask of the Phantasm is the best Batman film 😎
That is tough to argue! It is a great 1.
This might be a controversial take but the best Batman movie, in my opinion, is George Clooney's Batman & Robin.
@@Zivilin that would be controversial indeed. But you go for it my friend!
@@Talking_Story What can i say, I love cheesy b movies. 😂
Rocky 3 better than Rocky 1? Not so sure abt that lol... but the real best sports movie is Moneyball
Oh outside the box choice and I love it!
Thanks!
@@Talking_Story It is a very underrated film, but highly rewatchable.
@@DanLyndon I will definitely check it out.
Best musical is les mis or carousel
Best creature feature for me is sleepwalkers
Period piece titanic
Who done it shutter island
Western the magnificent 7
Spots flick warrior
Sci fi predator
Action flick red
Fantasy legend or krull
Superhero black panther (but heath ledger is classic)
Satire American psycho
Rom com 50 first dates
As always you are amazing Lady Dee!
Raising Arizona is awesome. But Holy Grail is way better/funnier.
Holy Grail is amazing!
Fantasy, for me it's Stardust one of the few films that's better than the book
Stardust is awesome!
I’m happy to hear you’re quite the Legend fan! Which movie soundtrack do you prefer?😂
There is more than 1?
@@Talking_Story There is the Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack for legend and then there is the soundtrack done by the band Tangerine Dream. There soundtrack is more 80s synth music than orchestral. It was used for the original theatrical release of Legend.
@@zkinak2107 tangerine dream is all I have heard.
@@Talking_Story oooooh you gotta watch the directors cut of Legend at some point. Jerry Goldsmith orchestral score fits so so well with the film. The Tangerine Dream music was incorporated into the theatrical cut as a means of making the film appeal to younger audiences. Ridley Scott has gone on record to say that he prefers the Goldsmith score with the film.
@@zkinak2107 I will schedule a re watch!
DRAMA: Lawrence of Arabia
COMEDY: The Big Lebowski
MUSICAL: The Blues Brothers
CREATURE: The Thing
PERIOD PIECE: Road to Perdition
WHODUNNIT: Zodiac
WESTERN: Unforgiven
SPORTS: Bend it like Beckham
SCI FI : E.T.
FANTASY: Fellowship of the Ring
SUPERHERO: The Dark Knight
SATIRE: Spinal Tap
ROM COM: Sleepless in Seattle
Rock solid list my brother!
The Virgin Suicides as best drama ever …. OK, we’re all entitled to our own opinions but for a film school student I feel like she hasn’t actually watched many films
She just finished first semester. Her choices will grow and look very different as life and her studies go on I bet.
