    Calgary seems to have a pretty respectable skyline for a city of its size, though the same thing can be said with respect to pretty much any Western Canadian city/metro area compared to similarly-populated US cities. The downtown is also pretty dense relative to the sprawl surrounding it, and in a way Calgary's downtown reminds me a bit of downtown Dallas for some reason, except downtown Calgary is not "strangled" by a loop of freeways surrounding it (though a "deck park" north of downtown Dallas has seamlessly reconnected downtown Dallas with Uptown though from a walkability and visual standpoint). Calgary's road system also seems pretty good, though the TCH-1 could be re-routed onto a freeway as you suggested; Stoney Trail around north Calgary might be the best candidate for that given some of the constrained right-of-way on Glenmore Trail. Designating that northern loop of Stoney Trail as part of the TCH system (TCH-201?) might also work such that TCH-1 could remain on its current alignment; this would be analogous to the southern Perimeter in Winnipeg holding the TCH-100 designation while TCH-1 goes through the city.
    Vancouver may be bigger but they also have height limitations on their skyline.

      @TransCanadaPhil  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I think the thing that makes Calgary's skyline really stand-out IMHO, is the way it stands in such stark contrast to the area around it compared to almost every other major city I've seen. It's not gradual at all, the downtown sticks out like a diamond shard stuck in the ground :-D

    • @BrandonClaridge
      @BrandonClaridge 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TransCanadaPhil Yep, there are little to no skyscrapers near the Calgary skyline, so it does stick out quite a bit.
      And what I said that the northern arc of Stoney Trail in Calgary should get a TCH designation should also apply equally to the northern arc of Anthony Henday Drive in Edmonton as well, though TCH-16 through Edmonton has fewer intersections than TCH-1 in Calgary. In fact, both loop roads appear to be numbered for their "parent" TCH route (AB-201 for Stoney Trail and AB-216 for Anthony Henday Drive respectively); it's fitting that at least part of these freeways should get a TCH designation. With a freeway upgrade to the south Perimeter in Winnipeg and the completion of the Regina Bypass, this would give 4/5 of the major cities in the Prairie Provinces a TCH-designated freeway bypass, only leaving out Saskatoon (though if you knock out some of the businesses on the northern part of Circle Drive between Idylwyld and Warman then add in some direct connector ramps to NB Idylwyld Drive from WB Circle Drive and vice-versa you would be set).

    Ah a city I spent 5 years in...gotta love all the freeway style roads, clover leaf interchanges etc. and the higher speeds! Truth be told...had you gone down Southland Dr. to McLeod Trail you'd of ben right where I resided when I was there! Lots of changes roadwise in Calgary too, always is as they are constantly upgrading the infrastructure. Also I agree, the TCH should be re-routed to Glenmore to avoid the residential areas of 16th Ave. NW.

    • @TransCanadaPhil
      @TransCanadaPhil  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yup, plus with the TCH realigned to Glenmore it wouldn't have to veer so far north (since the TCH runs further south east of Calgary).

      @@TransCanadaPhil Think about covering roads around the Nose Hill Park, 14 St NW etc. The view of city and downtown from that road is good too.

    • @nbrowser
      @nbrowser 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TransCanadaPhil exactly! A wee bit of say upgrading to 16th Ave. NW as you come into the city and Sarcee Trail could make that happen. Would significantly speed up going thru if you didn't plan to stop in the city. Oh and I don't know if it's still possible to get up there by car but I used to park up on the top of Signal Hill where most of the antennas are with my sweetheart some evenings...shall we say it offers a SPECTACULAR view of the city on a clear night!

    That is a HUGE median on Sarcee Trail...well, part of it.
    Your gas must have been really low, since you were filling up when the fuel man was putting gas in the storage tanks.
    Lastly...what a really nice video. Calgary never disappoints.

    Great video as always! How about adding "live" mini map in bottom right corner? So we can see road intersections and nearby points of interest along the way. Usually I pause the video multiple times to check surrounding area with google maps. Also photos of nearby places of interest can also appear there, some kind of "media window". Or maybe even adding some "virtual dashboard" with speed, temperature, and time of the day. for deeper immersion. What do you guys think?

    Love the view on Sarcee! If you ever have the opportunity, heading the opposite direction (southbound) from 16 Ave N has an awesome view of downtown. Eastbound Bow Trail from 85 St SW to Crowchild Trail also has some epic views. I second your idea about the TCH following Glenmore Trail.

      I tend to gravitate towards electronic music for a couple reasons. One, it's easier to mix with my DJ controller. Two, it tends not to be flagged by TH-cam copyright.
