    After trying many different headlight restoration kits, and spending over a hundred dollars, not to forget the labor I put into trying to make these products work, I figured out the perfect way to get clear headlights again. I shopped online and bought replacement headlights. It took me less time to instal them, and now they are perfect. I did have to realign them as to not blind my fellow motorist driving the opposite way. I am very happy now and tell all my friends, to just buy new headlight assemblies and save time, and aggravation.

      Decent DOT certified lights are not cheap, at minimum for most cars you are looking at $250 a set, I got a complete 4 step kit for $40 and had enough to do probably 5 cars, so did mine and a few paid jobs and made money.

      Is it me or the yellowish layer that forms over time is not the lens cover, but just the "protective UV layer"?
      So I should polish the headlamp and apply a product which filters UV so It won´t be yellowish again?

    • @madtonesbr
      @madtonesbr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correct - you definitely need protection if the UV-protective layer either failed or was polished off.

    • @bonnivilleblackcherry9745

      kits come in various forms. The one I use is $20 ish and it has 3 different grades of sand paper, 2 grades of polish and a uv sealer. It also comes with a backer to use in your drill. For $20 i can do about 8-10 cars or 5-6 if the lens are really bad on 3-4 or four of them. I get a lot of my work from my towing business and do it during off time while having a beer or 3 in the evenings. It takes about 10 mins per lens and charge $35 ech lens or $45 if they are really bad. If i lived in bigger populated area I could get paid to drink beer lol.

Make friends with the guys that own a couple car washes, tire shops, mechanic shops, get me some business cards made. While also going out and getting clients myself. $35-$40 a headlight for GREAT results. Go after it and get as many cars as I can after school and on weekends.

  • @skiraf
    @skiraf 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Just a tip... I would suggest your sanding steps should be vertical - horizontal - vertical. You want your first and last groves to be vertical. This will insure your light dispersion pattern his spread across the road surface, similar to a vertical prism distribution. Having horizontal lines after the last step will cause lights waves to be shot up into the sky.

    After watching this video, I had the confidence to do this myself to my car. Got a $15 from the auto parts store with the polish and protectant along with a buffing and sanding kit. Grabbed a few sheets of sand paper from the hardware store too just to make sure. I had my headlights looking like new in under an hour. Saved me a ton of money and I hope that it lasts. • @oz_medias
      @oz_medias 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They have to be fully sealed so they don't fog up or collect water/moisture. You can separate the lenses but it takes practice to do it without breaking one. Just do a little networking and you'll find you can buy a lens, which normally sells for $300, for less than $50. I've seen some manufacturers sell lenses for over $1000 but you can get the same, manufacturer branded lens, for a fraction of that cost if you do some networking. (real life, face to face, not Facebook, Instagram and crap like that)

    • @Sci-Mon1

    Great vid! I think I'll use your method on my other newer car. My head lights and driving lights were yellow and nasty! You couldn't even see inside them. I took Armour All tire foam and sprayed them and wiped them off after about 5 min the first time. The 2nd time I left it on for 10 min and took a shop towel sprayed some on it and wiped the lights off. The 3rd time I just left on the lights. There not perfect but for $5.00 on a 14 yr old car hardly no time they'll get me by. They don't look to bad. Far from perfect like yours but put out more light than before. It last for 3months are so and then I just coat the light and leave it dry.

    A diffusion coating on a lens will disperse light, absorb and the emit light of different wavelengths. The polycarbonate molded plastic of molded headlamp lenses imay become pitted, but it is not porous. UV exposure can degrade and air pollution and road debris can contaminate any "plastic" surface, including paint.
    The SAE J 3086 standard for headlight lenses requires that the lens withstand the light of the lamp and external light and road abrasion for a 3 years and have been proven in fleet operations to be adequate for 5-6 years. The UV inhibitor coating on the inner and outer surfaces of the lens, is much thinner than clear coat, however it is not a sacrificial layer, but a filter. It DOES NOT degrade quickly when exposed to light. Intentional abrasion should be the last resort in headlamp lens cleaning.
    NYC is too far north for UV to be the major source of surface degradation. Most headlamp and paint surface degradation in NYC is from debris and chemical pollution. It forms a layer sitting ON TOP OF the surface and can be removed with little abrasion.
    An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. there are several products that will maintain the UV protection of the plastic headlamp covers. A lifetime supply of any of these is less expensive than one kit to scour away degraded plastic, and application is a matter of life again on and wiping it off after a car wash. My favorite product for this function is formula 303 UV protectant for plastic, because it's not just great for headlights but for all exterior plastic and rubber.
    Even if the UV coating has been polished away, and plastic surface is badly degraded, any polishing method will be more effective if preceded by chemical cleaning. This is the same thing that you would do with paint. Neglected plastic will tolerate and requires more aggressive cleaning than more frequently cleaned paint. There are cleaners specifically formulated for cleaning haqrd plastic. USE THEM. Cleaning will reduce the amount of oil, tar and chemical that would otherwise get into your cleaning media.
    If not removed, the surface layer of contanimation make the degraded plastic material removal process less efficient and more likely to overheat and distort the headlamp covers.

    For the camera comparison it would've been cool if you showed the exposure meter for a scientific comparison. For example, set the camera exposure so the meter shows a couple of stops under exposed on the original, then presumably at the same camera settings the after would show a couple of stops over exposed. You would then be able to say based on the exposure difference the cleaning allows (e.g.,) 4 times as much light to pass.

It's all done by hand with 400/1000/2000 grit, followed by Meguiars plastic X compound on an orbital, topped off with the supplied UV clear coat. I've done over 20 cars with this specific kit and it has worked wonders on even the worst headlights.

      That was his Porsche. And considering his car would have numerous layers of his own sealant products already on the paint, he probably knew that the lens sealant would not have any effect on the paint of his Porsche.
      Also if you paid attention to the previous shot, there was mask around the headlight. He probably just had to get a quick shot of him applying it and maybe didn't do so, or something didn't work, beforehand.

    • @gav240z
      @gav240z 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have to spray clear coat heavier than regular paint that you dust on. If you dust on clear you get the orange peel. You have to spray clear coat really heavy so it looks almost like water over the top. It's a fine line between too little and too much (runs). So maybe practice on something else first? Also you can't easily touch it up by coming back later. Better to lay it on once and thick and let it dry, it will dry glossy and clear after that.
