    ℹ️ About the episode:
To be completely transparent, we didn't really want to create this video, but for the sake of transparency... it was important to share the dips. No matter how much or little experience you have, mistakes are going to happen. In many ways, the more experience you have, the more liberties you might take. In many ways, that's what happened in this episode. A series of little mistakes on a day that got off on the wrong foot ended up creating an expensive repair. Yet, when things go bad on KYD, the silver lining is an opportunity to share lessons learned or at very least a reminder to the community as a whole.

He's smack on though. That lock was extremely vulnerable. I don't have a great opinion on locks, but that particular one is definitely on the avoid list. Currently I'm looking into the Ft. Knox Locks brand even though I don't really own anything worth securing.

Didn't hear anything rubbing until we backed into the sight. Nice big scratch across the front of the trailer and a huge dent on the passenger side rear quarterpanel. $1200 in damage to the truck and the trailer? Idk. Its just cosmetic paint. • @kevinharvey82
      @kevinharvey82 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Military and a pilot. Things never are isolated incidents they tend to come in threes. When learning to fly you have to be honest with yourself on approach to the runway. You can’t force a landing, it’s not maybe known to those outside the aviation community but the “go around” says a lot about your ability to say nope not quite right let’s me “inconvenience” myself just a bit and go around the traffic pattern again so I get down safely without a doubt. It’s HARD to challenge that over confidence we have sometimes.

This has worked for me on many occasions - To do the job you’ll need a hair dryer, or heat gun and a can of compressed air (like that used to blow dust out computers). Use the dryer or gun to heat up the dent and an area a couple of inches around the perimeter of the dent area of the dent. Keep the heat source moving to avoid damaging the paint. You also want to be sure not to overheat any adjacent plastic or rubber bits. After about 3-5 minutes of heating immediately quench the heated area with the can of compressed air - holding the can upside down while spraying. A layer of ice will form over the dent - when the ice begins to melt the dent should pop out. If not, dry the area and repeat the heating and cooling process as needed. Note: Little taps with the side of your fist around the area outside the dent can help it to pop out.

It happens to the best of us. Our previous unit, backing into a site, with the swing caught an upper tree branch that was about 6ft off the ground. First thing I added on our current FW, was the rear camera. On the camera, I have Furrion Observation, absolutely is great. Also have Ford model F250, mounted the screen in the cab of the truck just on the left side of instrument panel, not talking up really any space. It is just above the left hand dash vent. The Observation camera is great in heavy traffic, also have it set up well for alignment of back of the FW. Safe travels.

It worked flawlessly until I got into an area that had many many mice. So I get that about the bad day. I think the mice ate the wires under the chassis. I have a F250 and 24 ft trailer. I added the integrated camera from Ford that came with it. The TPMS is part of the cable but you do NOT need to use it for the camera. The cable is pretty long, for my trailer I had to coil up quite a bit of it. I actually mounted it to the top of my ladder vs trying to run it inside the wall and it works great.

I was anxious to watch this episode due to the title. I feel for you. On this year's cross country camping trip I had the misfortune to take a turn into a campsite a little too tightly. We arrived later than expected and after dark.
The sites are at an angle to the access roads and as I pulled in, I heard a horrendous 'crunch'.
I couldn't express my feelings out loud as we were travelling with our granddaughters so I kept that bottled in as I surveyed the damage. I'd managed to just clip the front arm of the awning on a tree that hung out over the entry to the site. The arm (whole awning actually) was pushed back about 2-1/2 feet, to the point where the arm was actually blocking the door.
A neighbour camper heard and came over and helped me bend the arm(s) back forward so we could at least get into the trailer. Aaaarrrggghhh!
We did a bit more to clean it up during the daylight the next day but it's not a pretty site, and I still get steamed thinking about the damage. And yes. 'slower is faster'. All that 'shoulda', 'coulda', 'woulda' stuff boils to the surface.
This happened on our third night on a 13 day trip, so you can bet that EVERY other campsite was surveyed closely
    before entering.
I still have to figure out the repairs as Solera doesn't seem to sell individual parts and a set of replacement arms are fairly expensive!
    All the best.
    Bill.

That "fire thingy" is a FDC--Fire Department Connection. It's where the Engine would hook up a hose from their pump/water supply to supplement/boost the facility water pressure in the installed fire sprinkler system. All those words mean you have a stellar storage facility that has the capability to extinguish or at least greatly limit a fire in one of those stored units. While the initial unit and maybe some next door "collateral damage" units might be sacrificed/damaged, the entire facility probably won't go up in flames. This may be why your monthly costs are a bit more (due to local regulations) but it makes things better protected....
And the cutters you used to remove that lock are, in the fire service, known as a "36" Master Key".... Great videos! Be safe...!

I too have to put my little 20' Airstream into a covered storage unit when I am not using it. It looks a lot like what you are using, no electric but it doesn't cost anywhere near what you are paying. My Ford F150 has that trailer backup assist, the only time I use it is backing up into storage. I get the trailer all aligned, takes many "get out and looks" when I have it where I want it I click on the backup assist and it takes the trailer straight back. What a help that has been. I realize you don't need that, but it is a huge help for me.

Dude Happy Camper is the BOMB!!! Nasty story for it. I had a problem with my water line to the toilet in my truck camper. I had to remove the toilet to fix the problem. To my immediate fear once I realized that the tank was loose I discovered my black tank was FULL Not being able to move it now (The toilet was already loose) I opted to go for it.. Absolutely expecting to be blown back out of the camper when I pulled the throne.
I was wrong. It was not roses, but it was not nauseating.
Long story short. 25 years of RVing. I have tried them all. Happy Camper is by FAR the best I have ever used. Not only for dissolving solids, but odor control is incredible.

Thank you for sharing this video, which all of us who have been RVing for many years can relate to. My recommendation for purchasing new Airstreams is to take a hammer out and put a small dent in it so that the following “OOPS” are less painful and obvious. We have two vintage Airstreams and are not familiar with an Airstream without a dent! My latest OOPS that caused me a lot of anxiety and frustration, was pulling the 2019 F250 in the garage with the passenger side rear door open. Bricks alongside the door shut if for me! No dents, but over $800 to repaint the door! Yes, this was during a “bad day” for me. My favorite OOPS for you was on your auto level of your larger trailer that picked the wheels off the ground and could have been a disaster! Oh yea, Trish and windows in the class B in NZ was also entertaining!

Sometimes we all get unrealistic perceptions of people or situations. We would love to be able to live and travel like you two, but its not in the cards for most of us. That being said, even the beautiful people are people and experience hardship and trials in life. Never envy another mans life or what he owns. The Good Lord gives to each of us what we can handle. Keep up the work, you've certainly earned the rewards.

I had one of those moments with my 5th wheel when backing it in to store at my house. On the blind side as I was backing in tagged the corner gutter of my house. I had torn a gash about 1 foot long in the roof membrane and rearranged the corner of the gutter. It will never let me forget the little boo boo as I pull in everyday to see the crinkled metal. I refuse to spend $800 to replace two runs of gutter for the little beauty mark. The roof of the 5th wheel I fixed with etrabond tape and sealant.

The worse day of my RV life was pulling my 5th wheel away for a gas pump. Yep, you guessed it, I clipped the gas pump on the pull through. Damage looked bad, but in reality it wasn't as bad as it could have been. Learned my lesson. Also, my experience with backup cameras is some do not give you an accurate distance to an object. Good Luck!

I feel your pain. I spent last weekend hammering out a dent in my Airstream bumper. I backed into a tree. Driving solo has added challenges. Thankfully, it was straight without any branches. I was tired and "assumed" I was clear to back up a lot. A backup camera wouldn't save you since your dent is where the camera won't see. Yours started with the coffee maker and created a distraction to your routine.
I use the Garmin RV 770 with a Garmin BC-30 camera mounted INSIDE the rear window. I put a cone in the middle of my storage space and try to center it as I back. The resolution is poor but it helps. My space allows me to back perpendicular to the building, and I have nothing in front of me. So I'm lucky for that. I can see both sides in the mirrors. I sometimes swear I'm straight then get out and look and I'm not square in the spot. Mirrors are deceiving.
+1 on Vinnie's North Bay for replacing panels. Although after LoLoHo, he might be booked forever.

Marc, so sorry about the mishap. Sometimes bad days just keep getting worse. We store our 2019 Serenity 28RBT in my shop. The door is 10 feet wide and 10 feet tall. When I am backing the AS is, I get a whole day's exercise by using GOAL. We have an F-250 and the images in the mirrors can be very deceptive when backing. Still contemplating a motorized dolly, but that will become much more feasible if I ever crunch the AS! Thanks for sharing your experience. We are all still learning!

Sorry about your airstream. At least you didn’t hit another rig like we almost did. It was on snow we were trying to pull it out of storage and we kept getting closer and closer and closer to the rig beside us until there was only maybe an inch or two between rags. We finally had to get a tow truck to come pull us out sideways. What a nightmare that was.❤️❤️

I got a new covered spot for our new Class A. The 2nd time I parked in it I backed too close to a pillar at the far passenger side. I could see it in my rear view mirror so I hurriedly cranked the wheel and forgot about tail rotation. BANG! It just hit the edge of the rear cap... but knocked it loose. Turned out to be a $26,000 insurance claim!
At National Indoor RV Center's body shop they told me two things that have stuck with me. The first is GOAL, just like you said, and instead of Slow is Pro they told me to say "This is not a timed event" and to say it over and over when backing.

My commander when I was on a smaller US Navy ship used to say all the time "Slow is smooth, smooth is fast." Which I used to think was an absolutely wrong thing to say because how could something being slow also be fast. And then I had my turn to drive the ship. When you see a situation developing and you're going fast, ... slow down. Take the time you need to make a good decision. Thank you for paying the price for us. I think the next item on my list of things for our RV is going to be a backup camera. We don't have a steel side RV so that damage for us would pretty much ruin our RV.

I didn't read the 884 comments to see how many times the camera has been discussed but here is my 10 cents (Canadian) about 7.5 US cents. I have a 2017 F250 paid the extra crazy $ for the trailer camera and the TPMS trailer sensors. I would not suggest this combo for everybody but if you are trailering frequently then it is worth every dollar. I spent 2 months on the road with the family driving from Ontario Ca to Highway 1 in California. For that trip alone I was willing to pay for the setup. Instead of installing with lots of holes in the rig I attached the wire discretely with some 3M wire clamps. Turns out the TPMS that Ford uses for the trailers are for F150's so instead of pulling them out for the next rig I will just buy new ones and pull everything else off.
FYI there is a hack that you can buy to override the camera going out while driving, it allows access to all cameras while you are driving.
    Love your channel

TWICE when Emily hasn’t been available to help I’ve backed into stuff. Once I hit the corner of our garage $$$ and punctured the corner of the travel trailer. She was fantastic about both episodes and made me feel better. I’m a blessed man!
