I think its entirely possible that automotive centric businesses blocked monorail development in LA. General motors, Firestone, and others formed the National Streetcar Lines to buy up streetcar systems, tear them out, and replace them with busses. You know, the inspiration for the villain of Disney's Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
I wouldn’t say because cars dominated too much transit can’t ever beat them. Plus monorails are elevated it’s primarily was unapproved due to the impracticality of monorail maintenance which is really pricey and construction of monorails are pricey too and construction companies are greedy
I love monorails and have ridden both of these. They put in old fashioned trains in my area in California so all surface traffic has to stop every time a train arrives or departs unlike an elevated train.
Sokash, I HIGHLY recommend you make a video focusing on the origins of EPCOT. It was originally planned to be a city completely governed by Disney. Really interesting!
They need to build a monorail from LAX to the Disneyland Resort area! It flabbergasts me that there isn't some type of regular cheap transportation service from LAX to the Disneyland resort area.
Monorail is too expensive and carries too few people for the coast. Using the same technology as the light rail network of Los Angeles already uses can move many more people for no more cost.
But the advantage of the monorail is that it's above the traffic. They can be made with the same size and capacity as light rail b/c it's just a different track system, basically.
I personally love monorails, Seattle's especially, and think they should be added as a secondary option for transit as they are visually appealing and can be built quickly and efficiently using precast concrete!
Monorails may APPEAR sleek and smooth, however, when it comes to building transit SYSTEMS with junctions, monorail technology fails miserably, as monorail switches are problematic compared to conventional twin-rail switches.
Interesting, thanks. I had the pleasure and fun of working at Disney World in Florida in the late 70s (pre-Epcot but it was in planning). Yup, I was on the monorail crew. We all drove them as well as loaded and unloaded folks, rotating during each shift/day. What a GREAT time.
@@CraigFThompson Wish I could, I'm sure there are pros and cons of each, one "track" to move for monorail, but large and heavy, vs. standard tracks. I'm sure there are more things to consider. But also, a monorail can be above or below the rail, so that makes it even more complicated to compare.
My Lego City has a monorail. It runs to the Daily Bugle, a transfer hub it shares with the trams, and a third station over by a small business center, complete with hotel, bike shop, and museum. Sadly, despite the locomotive saying "Airport Shuttle", my Lego City's Monorail doesn't actually reach the airport. If I can get the new layout finished, then it will, but until then, my Airport Shuttle shall not reach the airport. Darn shame really, as the Hindenbrick really could use the extra passengers.
I know, however, the Airport Shuttle did at one point reach the airport. Unfortunately, when the Daily Bugle got built, the airport terminal had to be moved a shot distance down the street to accommodate the new skyscraper. Technically though, there is a bus terminal there, so the airport isn’t entirely un-serviced. Nonetheless, when the new overhaul is done, the stairs for the monorail station at the Daily Bugle will finally end right in front of the airport terminal, so at least I have that provision. Table needs to be extended first though, I’m still waiting on that. But hey, double the monorail stations will be worth the wait. Rockatoa, Brickticks out!
Having lived in Boston and NYC, and experienced the gawdawful noise of the subways and light rail vehicles, I always liked the monorail as a public transit alternative because it is virtually silent. In DisneyWorld, you'd never know it runs through a hotel, it's so quiet.
I will always have personal transportation "A Car" but it would be great to intergrade personal transportation with a "Clean, Safe, Family Friendly" monorail system. Tie together tourist traps, malls, airports and business/manufacturing districts. Parking garages could located at these locations.
Isn't the Las Vegas monorail the same technology as the Disney monorail? I have thought the company attempting to market the Disney tech were successful in Las Vegas. Also i have read the development history of the Disney system and basically it is a toy electric train scaled up for passengers.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the incident with President Ford when Walt invited him and his family onto the monorail after the ribbon cutting and Bob Gurr, who was driving, took off for a ride around the park, leaving the surprised Secret Service Agents standing at the station!
As far as switching from one track to another, the beam would be constructed to swing from one "track" to another----a very time-consuming process compared to conventional twin-rail tracks.
We seriously need to stop thinking of Monorail as a novelty and look at places like India, China and Japan that actually use it as elevated transportation.
The automobile affords a level of freedom and autonomy that is impossible to achieve using any form of public transportation. That autonomy will kill off most passenger rail solutions as long as cars are available.
They should. Do history on Los Angeles redcars? The car companies in the Tires. company had a big hand in taking away the red cars from What I was told. And then so many years or should I say decade later they brought back the cars they're not red but they're back. That's all I. Have to say thank you very much
For the Los Angeles County, CA area, the people wanted the monorail. But, politicians in Sacramento were pushing for a subway (in earth quake country of all places). Well, the subway initiative won. The subway cost 10 times the estimated cost to build upon completion. The cost overuns put the state in a financial crisis. The monorail would have cost far, far less.
Believe it or not, subways in "earthquake country" remain very well UNTOUCHED in the event of a major temblor. It's ELEVATED STRUCTURES OF ALL KINDS that suffer heavily in earthquakes.
