Oh sweet! I did not know that... Yeah, I rarely ever have had to rely on level 1 charging...just a few times before when on vacation and the last time I had crashed with my parents when I was closing on the home I just sold. I'll have to check that out because it looks like I might be staying here for a little while.
Great to see you back, Bill, and thanks for updating us on your life in the comments. Those of us who have been following your EV journey are always ready for new information.
I'm hoping I'll have more time now to start uploading videos more than just every four or five months! 😆 Life had just been way too busy ever since the divorce plus loosing 2 hours every day commuting to and from work I just haven't had the time to dedicate to my channel. I'm hoping that this will change in the coming months once I find a place and am able to settle back down in the city.
Hi Bill, I recently purchased my first EV, a 2018 Leaf. thank you for the videos, I find them entertaining and educational. I look forward to your return.
Thanks, Bill. I recently took delivery of my new 2020 Bolt EV, Premier. I had an electrician come out to the house in February, to give me an estimate for a Level 2 charger in my garage. Old house, big estimate. I am trying to get a second electrician out, but my wife won't allow anyone into the house, during the corona scare. So I am using the 110 volt, 8 Amp charge cord supplied by Chevy. There is also a Whole Foods Market nearby, that has 2 FREE Level 2 chargers in the parking lot. Unfortunately, the store is very crowded, and the EV spaces are frequently ICE'd, even though the spaces are painted green and signposted. I like the car, though I am a bit taken aback by the lack of a CD player, even though my car has the upgraded Bose Sound System. I am still in the learning curve. Jim
@@bmhsonic Just tried out the level 2 chargers at the local Whole Foods. Even though the parking lot was not that crowded, 3 of the 6 EV spots were ICE'd. They should tow the offenders.
I just unplug the dryer and plug in the level 2 charger. I live in the southern region of Texas, where the last 3 times it has snowed were 2017, 2004, and 1976. Once each year and the snow usually melted by noon.
Oh I've been there and done that before as seen in this video... th-cam.com/video/ZXu8Dpem60Q/w-d-xo.html The problem here was that I had been staying with my parents while I was in the middle of purchasing my new home, and to not be any more of an inconvenience to them I was fine with only using Level 1 speeds until I could get situated in my new home.
I had to replace my Leaf eves and I noticed that new one defaulted to 8 amps as opposed to the 12 amps the Leaf eves used. I actually like the lower setting since using on heavy duty extension cord. Don’t really need extra amps since my 2012!Leaf is down to 8 bars or about 50 mile range when full anyway.
Oh that's cool...so the replacement EVSE you bought has a setting right on the unit itself for 8amp or 12amps when hooking up to 110v? That's pretty sweet!
It's nice to be back... I'm hoping that once I get back into the city I'll have freed up some time during my work weeks that I won't feel like I don't have any time to do anything else on the weekends which was usually when I had the time to work on my videos. Of course right now given the current situation I more or less have all the time in the world to put out some videos and I might just start doing that as the boredom sets in! 😆
@@bmhsonic You know that the key to building a Channel is continue and regularly uploads. I know that you went through a divorce and that's hell, I sure know, but if you like to make videos, do it, it's always interesting to watch.
I just got a 2020 and I’m not seeing on the app where I can see detailed charging information like you have but it does let me switch to 12amps on the app
Have you had substantial battery degradation? I’m looking at a 2017 Bolt and I am curious about realistic battery life expectancy. Thank for all of your great videos !! I’m loving them !
"WALMART" soon sees the advantage of having say 6x EV Charge Stations near front door of every USA Store! It is perfect blend~ Shopper now has a hour or more to shop inside!
Depending on the EV and charge station one could charge in an hour or less! 😉 I'm all in favor of having a blend of DC Fast Chargers and Level 2 destination chargers... Let's see a row of maybe 16 charging stations, 8 DC Fast, and 8 destination, like they did at #LLBean in Freeport Maine. (see video below) The only thing that I would have liked to see different would have been if the 8 #Tesla stations were complimented with 8 other DC Fast Chargers for all other EV'S...instead in this scenario, at this location, only the Tesla's can DC Fast Charge (or "SUPERCHARGE") and all other EV's can only take advantage of the 8 other Level 2's... If #WALMART or #TARGET or any other chain were to do something similar I would highly be in favor of seeing 8 DC Fast Chargers that ANY EV could use and 8 Level 2's that again any EV could use. IF Tesla would also like to have their proprietary #SUPERCHARGERS in place so that Tesla owners can have the true Tesla experience then that could be in addition to everything else...but don't leave out all other EV's in favour of only SUPERCHARGERS. th-cam.com/video/TixKaGczzW0/w-d-xo.html
Right when I thought I might start putting out some more videos...2020 hit. 🤦♂️ No, I haven't quit...just taking a break. With any luck 2021 will be better for us all.....
Thanks for your videos. I finally decided to get a 2020 Bolt LT. I was wondering why you were using the adapter to plug into 120v. Didn't you get the standard 120v charger cord when you bought your Bolt? Also, is it okay to leave the car plugged in during inclement weather? I will need to keep my car parked outside and was just wondering how weatherproof / resistant the connection is and whether or not it's okay to keep it plugged in during rain. Thanks again!
That Chevrolet Caution about overloading the building wiring shouldn't be real for a properly wired building. There should be circuit breakers that protect circuits from overloading. A way to get 240V for level 2 charge if you cannot get to a dryer plug would be to find one 120V outlet on the A Phase and another on the B phase and make an adapter to combine the hot side of each. Then you could charge at 240V, 12 Amps.
Right, but there are a lot of improperly wired buildings out there particularly old ones like my parents house. Luckily the outlet that I'm plugged into is a brand new dedicated outlet that my father had put in for an air compressor out in the garage.
Welcome back , how many miles does your Bolt has now? I have a 17 Premier with 54k miles and it feels and looks brand new still, that’s beside the shitty plastics but it’s great otherwise
Hey Bill, thanks for the video. What app are you using to get those charging stats on your phone. Is it a app for the juice box? The app would be cool with the Bolts stock evse. Is there any apps other than myChevrolet that are good for the Bolt for charging stats?
Yes, it is an app that communicates directly with the JuiceBox Pro40. I'm not aware of any other apps other than the stock Chevy app for checking in on the BOLT EV.
Hello Jay, well after 18 months of driving an hour to get back into the city, and then another hours drive in the evening to get back home I had had enough. Also my 5 year old boy will be starting kindergarten in the fall and I really didn't want to put him through that either so I figured now would be the best time to try and sell and relocate myself back closer to work and where his mother lives. The hard part now will be finding a place while everything is locked down. Didn't see that coming when I had put my house up for sale earlier this year. 🤦♂️
I just bought a 2020 Bolt and I'm charging on the standard level 1 charger at 12 amps, but I'm only getting about 4 mi/hr charge rate. Am I doing something wrong?
Nope, that's about all you can get on level 1...12 amps is a little faster than 8, but you're still going to be in that 3 to 5 mile rage per hour...bet you anything if you were to switch it back to 8 you'd be in the 3 miles per hour charge rate...keep in mind what the car says it has in miles is only an estimate of what it thinks it can do with the energy it has stored in the battery...charging at 12 amps over 8 will definitely give you more stored energy in the long run over any given length of time while hooked up and charging at that rate.
If it was it be my car by now! 😆 No, I had that picture taken on "Back to the Future Day" at a movie theater when they were showing all three films and it was advertised that a DeLorean would be there on the premises. That isn't taking into account Level 1 efficiency of around 89% in moderate weather, and when its freezing and snowing it may be far worse due to the battery having to be warmed (can't charge a frozen battery).
The problem with 120vac charging is that it is only 70% efficient. Not something you want to do on a regular basis. You can however plug the Bolts standard EVSE into 240vac and get 90% efficiency. When plugged into 240vac the car will always draw 12 amps for a 2.8kW charge rate.
