biggest cost of that EVSE install is probably the wire, its expensive, so the further they have to run it through your house, the more expensive it is. Thanks for sharing so much about your vehicle!
You're welcome. I wish I'd ran it all the way across the garage. Labor is also very expensive here, especially when they look up the neighborhood. If you're installing an EVSE, go with as much flexibility as possible, and use a plug in EVSE instead of hardwired like we did.
Yeah, it can be tough when that happens. One time I had to drape the cord over a very nice BMW X5 because it was in the EV spot 😂 I think idiots sabotage them, or some very careless and selfish EV drivers just brake them.
@@Allan_A lol. I probably would of popped his tires. But yeah you can tell they hardly maintain their stations. The charging station I go to 3 of them haven't been working since last year based on the reviews for that station. Charge point feels like an abandoned project.
You're right that ChargePoint doesn't maintain them. They sell the stations, and it's up to the owner to get the maintenance done (pay ChargePoint). EVgo is really good because they own and maintain the stations, so it's their money on the line.
@@Allan_A ah yes . That station I go to clearly states it's owned by the city. a waste of money for them in my opinion. Completely agree with you on evogo . They really maintain them and are appealing stations. Another one that's up and coming are EVCS stations . 40 dollars a month for unlimited charging. But not to many of them around currently.
The button on top of the j1772/ccs connector is not only the release for plug, but it is also a switch that is wired in series with the proximity circuit. When this circuit is broken. The charger thinks the car is unplugged and will not charge.
Thanks, that is very useful info! Check out the video I just post. Had serious trouble trying to charge and almost got stranded in freezing temps tonight! Can you also post this comment there?
At least you have a bunch of charging options near you. Here in Montana we have hardly any DC fastchargers and just a few Level 2 chargers. I found that the *FREE Chargepoint* chargers can be activated with *any RFID* , you don't need the app. I usually use my RFID enabled credit card for that, but since it is free it does not run your card at all.😉
Yes, we have some redundancy here, even in the semi rural conservative area I live in. Just yesterday I almost ran out of battery. Stopped by an ice arena, but their L2 was turned off, so I went to a Starbucks that just got a chargepoint L2 installed. Got the 10 miles I needed to make it home with heat 😃 Infrastructure is the biggest challenge, we need more charging in the shopping areas at least.
Hey T Burns, you can set it to charge during a specific time window, and if you don't have a new battery set it to charge up to 90% or hilltop reserve in the battery settings. That will minimize the risk of something going wrong, especially if you draw down your battery a lot.
This was so timely for me! We are building a new home and about to go do a walk through with the electrician. Now I can show him what we want for a charger in the garage. Is there anything I need to tell him to do differently with electricity for the charger? Thank you again, your videos are content rich and very helpful.
Awesome, congrats! I'd have two separate 40/50 amp breakers and separate 240 volt outlets on each side of the garage. I'd also get a plug in EVSE - Mine is hardwired and I kind of regret not having the flexibility to just unplug and move it! My utility gives extra cheap EV electricity between 11pm-7am which works for us 95% of the time, which is why we hardwired. But in winter I'd love to be able to plug into a second nema 14-50 outlet to top up during the day/early evening at the regular rate. My EV electricity is on its own meter which shuts off if plugged in outside the night window (I wish I mentioned that in the video)! Aim for maximum flexibility and remember that it's cheaper to get it now than to hire someone to come into your complete home and have to move, tear things apart and put it back together. Let me know if that helps, and if you have any other questions!
@@Allan_A Yes, this was VERY helpful! I've copied down what you said here to be able to communicate it to our electrician. Just one more question: you said you would get a plug in EVSE, would you be able to provide a link, maybe from Amazon of one that you would consider if you were installing it now? Thank you again, so much.
@@mikecleveland7453 This Duosida charger is the exact one we have, which is priced well. We've not had any problems with it: amzn.to/2HD9Pnx The ChargePoint is more expensive but it's future proof (up to 50 amp), so if you got a faster charging car in the future it would take advantage of that. @@Allan_A Perfect! I've included the above in my notes to the electrician now. Can't tell you how much of a help you've been to us in this process, thank you so much.
I don't have an extra delivery charge - it's unchanged from before I had the EVSE installed. I was already having electricity delivered to my house 😂 The only difference in my bill is an extra line for the extra meter. It really is 4.5¢/kWh.
Yes, my cost is about $11/1,000 miles driven and it's all wind energy! The big catch is that I can only charge between 11pm and 7am (meter is off during the day), which works for me 99% of the time. I just checked and this rate isn't available, but new EV owners can get 6.6¢/kWh off peak (8pm-8am), and higher rates during peak hours. I might consider this, because in winter there are times when charging during the day is useful. I checked the other major electric company in MN - Xcel - and they have a similar 4¢/kWh for overnight EV charging on a separate meter, so I'm thinking Minnesota might be adding an incentive to the price. Unlike my utility, Xcel charges an extra $4.95/month for the meter. My normal residential rate is 13¢/kWh, so about what you pay without the EV incentives.
@@Allan_A well we have off peak hours but u need a special meter and the rate of regular power from 7am to 10pm go’s up to .37 KWh and the off peak rate is .09 so it’s just not worth it… and we still have that delivery charge…
Hope "WALMART" soon sees the advantage of having say 6x EV Charge Stations near front door of every USA Store! It is perfect blend~ Shopper now has a hour or more to shop inside!
That would be nice. I believe they have EVgo DC fast charging at some locations, but a level 2 everywhere would probably encourage a few extra people to shop there. Our local HyVees have free level 2 chargers. Not the cheapest grocer, but I stop there more than I would otherwise.
Hey Billy yes I have. It happens to me if I haven't come to a complete stop when Park engages. Usually this is because I pulled the parking brake but it delayed engaging before I pressed Park. It's definitely not good for the car, but I don't think it's a big deal if it's not happening every day, and you're not rolling much when it happens.
@@Allan_A thanks for the response. Same has happened to me a couple of times. Bought a new 2020, and I really like it so far. Hope I can get to 100k + miles like black bolt.
Congrats, you'll definitely make it to 100K! It's jarring at first, you just have to remember to actually hear the parking brake engage before hitting the button 😂 Cheers!
I do, for my EV meter from Connexus Energy! Check with your power company, they may have different rates for time off day, etc. Our regular rate is 13.5 cents, and we chose the 4.5 cent on our EV meter between 11pm and 7am (the meter cuts off between 7am and 11pm). There are other, more expensive rates for 24-hr charging, but we get a full charge overnight so went with that option. According to Connexus all the energy we use from the EV meter is solar too!
Hi. Timothy, I drive 3000-3500 miles a month. I drive before work in the morning, and from 4pm-8ish on days my wife does not work. I do UberEats/DoorDash 9-11pm some times, but I prefer not to drive too late. I only pick up people when the sun is up.
thanks for the tip on manually fixing the Chargepoint charger if it is broken.
