Imo, the kirby show from a while back feels a bit like a precursor of sorts to these in the way of having the people who made the property making sure things go smoothly, remaining decently faithful to the source material, and adding some new things that for the most part, are all pretty good in execution. It's not perfect, but definitely worth a watch at least once.
It's going to be genuinely interesting to see how Sonic 3 goes now it has competition. The Super Mario Bros. Movie was promoted by way of a commercial about Mario and Luigi showcasing their plumbing service. What made it stand out was the fact that it used the Plumber's Rap: the theme song of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show. Considering how overwhelmingly positive the reaction to this was, it’s not too far-fetched that Sega and Paramount paid close attention. Bet you they're gonna utilise all the fanservice the franchise has to offer to compete with Nintendo and Illumination. They're gonna have the SatAM theme song play either in trailers or the movie itself. The Video Game Movies are really paving new ground for more and more to be made, I’m so excited for the Mario Movie and I very much enjoyed both Sonic Movies
If you want a true Mortal Kombat multimedia experience, watch the animated movies. Specifically Scorpion's Revenge and Snowblind. The second animated one is genuine vomit, but the first one has a lot of gore, and a somewhat compelling emotional through line through the fighting game icon, Scorpion. Snowblind is both nothing like the Mortal Kombat games, but everything I ever wanted at the same time. The movie takes just enough lore from the games like Kenshi's backstory to show that the writers cared, but also so drastically different from the games and manipulating the lore so frequently that it feels like a fresh and new experience. Definitely check those out.
Though there is little information on it and no teasers or trailers are made yet, I hope that the Five Nights at Freddy's movie will do well. While the big (and rather confusing tbh) lore is the main appeal of many of the games, I want the movie to have a simpler story and at least be a genuine horror film. Certainly helps that Scott is at least there to give a helping hand and ensure that it doesn't stray too far.
I adore the fact that we’re living in a time where Video Game movies and shows can be good if not great. Sonic 2, Acane, Last of Us, Detective Pikachu, Edgerunners where actually great and shows that with enough heart you can make video games come to life. I really hope they manage to make the already great looking Mario movie, fantastic! Also you forgot to mention Detective Pikachu that movie is Goated!!
Both of the Halo series and the uncharted movie where both trash if Hollywood ever tries to pull a live action adaptation of Ben 10 which GOD I HOPE THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN EVER I hope it won't be tom Holland
Bruh how could you bring up the Mario Movie's masterful marketing and not mention the fact that they paid homage to the Super Mario Brothers Super Show by cleverly recreating the show's theme song for an in-universe pluming ad for the Mario Bros's plumbing business AND getting the original voice of Princess Toadstool from said cartoon to voice the lady seen in said pluming ad? That was top tier marketing right there.
I've been saying that I think video game movies will be the standout genre of the 2020 decade just like how zombie movies and superhero movies were in the 2000's and 2010's.
I’m glad that people are starting to warm up to Chris Pratt as Mario. I honestly like his take on the voice. It sorta reminds me of the Super Mario Bros Super Show with Lou Albano voicing the character. And clearly if people don’t like how Pratt sounds nothing like the games, then they need to watch that show. Still the recent trailers have made his voice grow on me
Simple, they follow the storyline, feels like a video game, characters are accurate, it’s got the feel of the certain brand, and most of all They capture what makes the video game so good
Even though video game adaptions are hit-or-miss, good thing they are improving significantly because we need the right people to work on a video game movie, have a director to pay respect to the source material, or the director and filmmakers are fans of that IP. Either way, everyone is seeing a new breath of fresh air when it comes to adapting video games to television nor cinema.
16:55 In the show Bill’s note gives Joel the confirmation he needed to protect the one he loves just as Bill did with Frank. He serves the same purpose in the game and show but it’s done differently.
You think it’s a coincidence around 20+ years later we’re finally getting good adaptations, y’know… when kids in the 80s playing video games became an adult. It’s almost like they grew up with the source material so they understand it more than anyone else 🤔
This is a great list! All of these show just how well you can do when you adapt a video game in a certain format if you try to make ti faithful while still adding your own spin on it when you need to, especially with a game like Angry Birds!
I love that in between highly loved shows like Edgerunners and Arcane there’s just Angry birds praise. Edit: “Ermm, Cartoonshi, how dare you forgot Fnaf movie coming.”
16:58 The way I saw someone describe Bill in the game vs in the show was: "In the game, he was a warning to Joel of what he could become if he pushed others away. In the show, he's a message of hope, that if he lets others into his life, he can find meaning and happiness again." I will admit that I haven't played the games/watched a playthrough, but my friend who played through didn't have an issue, and most online commenters understood and agreed with the above description.
This was unexpected but I needed this. I really enjoy your new style of videos. Just these quick little videos that are narrated well and enjoyable to listen to
Speaking of Mortal Kombat, there are also the animated Mortal Kombat Legends movies. The first two retell the classic story of Mortal Kombat 1-3/9, meanwhile the third movie is a what-if continuation of Mortal Kombat 11, while also faithfully retelling the origin Story of Kenshi. I think all of these 3 movies are great even if they are way to short. I prefer the subtlety in The Last of Us game over the show too.
Ikr, I remember watching it on Netflix because I had nothing else to watch and I was so surprised him how good it was. FYI I never played any of the video games, so the fact it was able to stand up as its own thing just shows you how good it is.
I don't get the criticism of Bill's impact on Joel's character arc. In the game, Bill represents what could happen to Joel if he keeps going on the dark path of paranoia and pushing others away, meanwhile, in the show Bill represents what could happen if Joel let's himself open up to others and start to live as his best self, wich makes his choice of saving Ellie in the end more meaningful to me.
I love the Idea that Japanese Game companies are waiting in the wings for if the studios step a Toe out of line. It reminds me of the stories of Miyazaki warning American's not to punch up their scripts with a sword.
One adaption everyone seems to miss is Werewolves Within, Currently the highest rated VG film on Rotten Tomatoes, and the only one with a Certified Fresh on it
Love your channel, I also really recommend the Castlevania anime series, it was imo the first genuinely great video game adaptation, and the same team are making a dmc anime so, I’m hyped
The difference between old game adaptations and new ones is that the new ones actually try to make the movies like the games, The only old game adaptation that I like did this and that was the first Mortal Kombat which did miss the gore but that’s not important imo
I think the major factor with why these video game adaptations are coming pretty decent is the fact that unlike say, 30-40 years ago, there is definitely more writers and film crew that most likely grew up with these franchises and have an understanding of the source material, instead of executives saying "screw it" and giving the reins to whoever was willing. Granted some bad adaptations have their own charm to it, hell some of them may have helped develop characters for the future like Kano in Mortal Kombat, but there is adefinite difference in passion
Agreed on all counts. Studios finally have gotten adaptations right and we on the verge of VGMs being the next huge craze because of it. Also Jack Black a Bowser is amazing. If I wasn't told who voiced Bower I never would have guessed he was Jack Black. Such a wonderful job at hiding his voice, unlike with Po from Kung Fu Panda. Who's literally just Jack Black. Which is fine such KFP is a great trilogy. Video game adaptations are definitely seeing a redemption arc and it's great to see. Hopefully Nintendo will make a Zelda dna Metroid movie if Mario does well.
Video game movie are gonna be the next new big genre that will take over comic book films. Henry Cavill (aka Superman) is currently creating a Warhammer 40K tv show with a possible spin off movie, Ghost of Tsushima is currently in development, there’s been talks about a Mass Effect movie in the works with Cavill as John Shepherd. Plus Sony has the most PlayStation exclusives new and old that could become great films like God of War could be a R-rated violent film or Sly Cooper could be a good kids films. Microsoft already failed miserably with Halo but Sony could still get the edge and dethrone Disney and Marvel. They just need to hire right people and make sure the movies are good.
Video game adaptations, in my opinion, are still going strong even with the recent release of the Five Night's at Freddy's movie which was a treat for all of us after waiting for 8.5 years
okay if video games replace hero movies guess what im not watching a single movie ever!! again then im done!! so done with hollywood if video games become the next thing same as anime so yeah goodbye hollywood and movies 2004-2022
im not waching a movie again! cuz superheros movies were better video game movies suck ass and i done forever no more hollywood no more movies goodbye!
Seeing that video game movies are finally getting their due is truly a treat, after so many years of straight-up garbage, with occasional good things like Raul Julia's M Bison, and the first Mortal Kombat film being something of a cult classic. I'm actually a bit surprised you didn't bring up the Cuphead show since it's generally considered to be pretty good. I'm also in the odd camp that actually likes the first Angry Birds movie admittedly. And the Mario Movie is so far shaping up to be something great. If nothing else, it's pretty faithful to the games, even if I have my reservations(I genuinely feel they could have done a better job adapting Peach's game personality, but this probably isn't the time to talk about that). But, I think I'll love the film anyway as a huge Mario fan since everything else is on point, and it's clear that Illumination is giving their all for the first time in a long time. Great video mate.
people talking about the video game adaptation curse is so fucking funny to me when the pokemon anime exists. that bad boy is still around after 25 years and will probably outlive us all
I'm still rather surprised on why a lot of people haven't watched or mentioned Castlevania. It's one of my favourite game adaptation and animated series in general.
If you love 2D and 3D animation blended together, then I wish for you to review and analyze Puss in Boots 2.🐱 Also, TH-cam please leave the kid alone and let him do his thing.
even cartoon network used to do that with most of it's shows like flap jack chowder the amazing world of gumball adventure time in some cases and that's one of the reasons why these shows where so successful nowadays I rarely see any animated movie or a series use that 2d and 3d blending style until spiderman into the spider verse came in glad that they are being this artstyle back
Yeah, "scattershot attempt at fanservice" is a perfect way to describe it. I love how the old Mario Movie feels so primitave. Like an ancestor to the one we have now!

I just love how everyone forgot about the halo show like I really love how everyone just collectively agree to never talk about that again
Halo show? That exist?
People also forgot about the uncharted movie
Both of the Halo series and the uncharted movie where both trash if Hollywood ever tries to pull a live action adaptation of Ben 10 which GOD I HOPE THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN EVER I hope it won't be tom Holland
@@fernandomora4230 that movie was honestly also bad
We Halo and Uncharted Fans deserve way bettet
@@applehazeva2739 bettet
Bruh how could you bring up the Mario Movie's masterful marketing and not mention the fact that they paid homage to the Super Mario Brothers Super Show by cleverly recreating the show's theme song for an in-universe pluming ad for the Mario Bros's plumbing business AND getting the original voice of Princess Toadstool from said cartoon to voice the lady seen in said pluming ad?
That was top tier marketing right there.
I'm holding out hope the Mario movie hits it out of the park. That or if it doesn't go over so well Nintendo just gives the keys to Dreamworks.
It will hit out of the park!
@@creedecriswell634it did*
All these new video game adaptations just makes me want a Doom movie that's actually faithful to the source material
I hope it doesn't end up like Halo
@@mohabalserafe3795 Oh I agree. Just give me a Doom movie where we get to see the Slayer on the big screen doing what he does best
@@PelinalDidNothingWrong and also never remove the helmet
I love how with the new Mario movie, Nintendo is clearly trying to make us forget the old live action one ever happened.
Still the recent trailers have made his voice grow on me
Simple, they follow the storyline, feels like a video game, characters are accurate, it’s got the feel of the certain brand, and most of all They capture what makes the video game so good
One I hope they adapt in Sonic 3 is Maria getting gunned down by the Gun Soldier
With the better stuff coming out I hope the fallout show will be good
16:55 In the show Bill’s note gives Joel the confirmation he needed to protect the one he loves just as Bill did with Frank. He serves the same purpose in the game and show but it’s done differently.
I think one of the reasons that videogame adaptations are getting better is that more and more people that play videogames are entering the industry
Arcane was the best
16:58 The way I saw someone describe Bill in the game vs in the show was: "In the game, he was a warning to Joel of what he could become if he pushed others away. In the show, he's a message of hope, that if he lets others into his life, he can find meaning and happiness again."
I will admit that I haven't played the games/watched a playthrough, but my friend who played through didn't have an issue, and most online commenters understood and agreed with the above description.
This was unexpected but I needed this. I really enjoy your new style of videos. Just these quick little videos that are narrated well and enjoyable to listen to
The FNAF Movie also looks promising too a lot of people hope this doesn't break the streak
I believe the Castlevania show was truly a masterpiece. It deserves more recognition.
I don’t the hype behind it only the first two seasons were good
It fell apart with season 3.
I think Season 4 was decent.
Ikr, I remember watching it on Netflix because I had nothing else to watch and I was so surprised him how good it was. FYI I never played any of the video games, so the fact it was able to stand up as its own thing just shows you how good it is.
First two seasons great
Then after that
It goes down the toilet
And that was it for me
I don't get the criticism of Bill's impact on Joel's character arc.
Castlevania, the Cuphead Show, Detective Pikachu, World of Warcraft, Sonic Boom should also be on the list.
I was surprised how genuinely good the Sonic movies were. I'm hopeful that Illumination doesn't screw Mario up.
If they kept Sonic's original design the movie would have BOMED HARD.
I wish they actually made an edgerunners video game spin-off then make it into a Netflix series
I love the Idea that Japanese Game companies are waiting in the wings for if the studios step a Toe out of line. It reminds me of the stories of Miyazaki warning American's not to punch up their scripts with a sword.
can you elaborate
One adaption everyone seems to miss is Werewolves Within, Currently the highest rated VG film on Rotten Tomatoes, and the only one with a Certified Fresh on it
Not to mention the five nights at Freddy’s film is in production rn! With Matthew Lillard as the man behind the slaughter!
When I heard that certain phone ringing sound, I thought for sure that you were going to talk about the FNAF movie
I didn't even know cyberpunk was done by trigger it looks very different from the other trigger projects I have seen
Love your channel, I also really recommend the Castlevania anime series, it was imo the first genuinely great video game adaptation, and the same team are making a dmc anime so, I’m hyped
The video game movies right now were heading into a new direction and gonna be greater. 👏
The difference between old game adaptations and new ones is that the new ones actually try to make the movies like the games, The only old game adaptation that I like did this and that was the first Mortal Kombat which did miss the gore but that’s not important imo
Glad that video game movies are awesome now
This October will also release the so awaited FNAF movie, the one with Shaggy Rogers as The Purple Guy
Goddamit cartoonshi, why must you get me hooked on new bangers every time you upload.
19:43 I thought that the phone call was a transition to talk about the fnaf movie for some reason lol
Have you watched the Detective Pikachu movie? It came out before Sonic and it’s a lot more ambitious with impressive world building.
Never in a million years would I think this would ever happen
22:00 don't forget that super bowel commercial which brought back the Super Mario Bros Super Show theme
Video game adaptations, in my opinion, are still going strong even with the recent release of the Five Night's at Freddy's movie which was a treat for all of us after waiting for 8.5 years
okay if video games replace hero movies guess what im not watching a single movie ever!! again then im done!! so done with hollywood if video games become the next thing same as anime so yeah goodbye hollywood and movies
2004-2022
im not waching a movie again! cuz superheros movies were better video game movies suck ass and i done forever no more hollywood no more movies goodbye!
The moment I heard Komi Can't Communicate music, I knew this is gonna be a good video.
No mention of Detective Pikachu at all? That is widely considered to the be first successful live action video game movie.
I would love to see a new devil may cry anime and maybe a Beyonetta adaptation too
people talking about the video game adaptation curse is so fucking funny to me when the pokemon anime exists. that bad boy is still around after 25 years and will probably outlive us all
Oh god, I hope Mario turns out well.
Would NOW be a good time to make a film adaptation of Team Fortress 2? Preferably an animated one.
I'm still rather surprised on why a lot of people haven't watched or mentioned Castlevania. It's one of my favourite game adaptation and animated series in general.
If you love 2D and 3D animation blended together, then I wish for you to review and analyze Puss in Boots 2.🐱
Also, TH-cam please leave the kid alone and let him do his thing.
even cartoon network used to do that with most of it's shows like flap jack chowder the amazing world of gumball adventure time in some cases and that's one of the reasons why these shows where so successful nowadays I rarely see any animated movie or a series use that 2d and 3d blending style until spiderman into the spider verse came in glad that they are being this artstyle back
Welp he bout to do it for you:)
I think video game adaptations is so much better back then and amazing video man :]
Yeah, "scattershot attempt at fanservice" is a perfect way to describe it. I love how the old Mario Movie feels so primitave. Like an ancestor to the one we have now!
I’m hoping the Mario movie will be good 🙏🙏
Sonic 2 is my favourite film of 2022, second only to Everything Everywhere All at Once.
