To identify an entire group of people I’m not down with Latinx. Latino means everyone ffs. If a person specifically chooses to identify with neither Latino or Latina and rather be usually Latinx fine. I'm brazilian and to me even the idea of being a "latino" is off, he have pride on our countries, at most we would call other latinos as "hermanos" that is the spanish word for brother you wouldn't ever see brazilians talking about being latinos or thinking about the term to hard, for us is just a word for someone who's the mother language is a romance based language.

They Germanic, Semetic, African, Mediterranean, Celt, Britons, Greek, Hispanics etc People who made up their Empire.
Ancient Romans were a Ethnicity and Culture. Not a single race of people. That is how they were able to conquer. They used assimilation of the people they Conquered. Much like the Ancient Greeks. Latino is an Ethnicity and Culture.
Latino is an evolution of Roman Latin from Language and Culture.

Moreover, the people that you mention above where all of the same race, all European except for Northern Africans. The fact is that you mention Race. The problem with the people from Latin America is that they use the term Latin/Latino/Latina as either being their Race or their Skin Color or their DNA. This is not true. Latin (Latino is incorrect in English-correct way is Latin) only refers to first the Latin Language spoken by the Romans and two it refers to Romance Languages and three it refers to the Latin Culture of the Romans. Nothing to do with Skin Color or Race. Everything Latin be it the Latin people, the Latin Language and the Latin Culture all comes from Italy. The Romans spread it around Europe, Northern Africa and the Middle East through colonialism and when centuries later the French, Portuguese and Spaniards came to the new world to colonize they spread the Latin Languages, Roman Culture, Roman Laws and Christian Catholicism throughout what is now known as the Americas. So to conclude it's not the race of a person which determines being Latin. Latin is a culture and cannot be used for personal identification like the Spanish-speaking people do. For personal identification people must use their Race, or Country of Origin like Mexican, Cuban...or say "Latin American/s" . This is what we all do. We don't identify using a culture. In fact even the Latin Europeans seldom use the term Latin. They use their Race which is White or almost always say Italian, French, Romanian, Portuguese and Spaniards or just say European. Latin is only used when in a discussion one has to identify his or her culture and only then. You from Latin America must do the same: Use your Race, individually, or say Mexican, Cuban, Puerto Rican or "Latin American/s. You use the terms Latin/Latino/Latina the wrong way. Blame Mexican Frank del Olmo because he created this identity problem for you.,

The word Latino is incorrect in English language-correct way is Latin and Latin has nothing to do with race, ethnicity, DNA, Blood and gender. I've lived in the US for nine years. I moved to my native country Colombia and have stayed here for the past 8 years. This is literally the first time I've heard of this term. We will always refer to ourselves as "latino" and not "latinx". Not only does that try to "solve" an issue that's not there, which in of it's self is offensive, but trying to make every term "gender neutral" has the potential of completely changing and possibly ruin the spanish language because we use gendered pronouns for things beyond people. Lapicero, meaning pen, is a a masculine pronoun.

I don't use the word "Latinx," because the word exclusively reads with an anglophone nuance. The word is exclusive to the English-speaking world in an attempt to establish a label for their Hispanic/Latino/a demographic, but it is an affront to native Spanish-speakers as it violates the morphology and syntax of the Spanish language, as well as showcasing anglophone ignorance of the Spanish language.

I had picked up a book at the library today about a Latino family. Then I saw that the book exclusively used the terms latinx, senorx, and brujx.

When we talk "latinos" you can be refering to a group that includes males, females, non binary, or any other gender since even though it's written the same as the masculine form, it doesn't apply only for men, but for literally everyone.
For those who don't know, unlike english, literally EVERY SINGLE SPANISH WORD HAS A GENDER "el agua", "las flores", "la hora", etc. So for a general perspective the masculine form is usually used, even if it's not refering only to men, son "latinx" doesn't make any sort of sense. It's not custom or laziness, it's grammar.

@Andrew E. Schiaparelli What Language you speak(1st or 2nd languages) has nothing to do with ethnicity. ANGLO-SAXON is the word used for culture derived from Britain. Hispanic is a census term that is means "Spanish last name." and has come to equate people from or decesnded from Mexico/Spain/Central and South America countries/cultures. (PLEASE DO NOT CONFUSE or BE CONFUSED BY IGNORANT PEOPLE )
The term Latinx was created by Anglo Americans as a way to Anglicize the term Latino under the guise of political correctness. After all, they could have used Latine as a gender neutral word which would be more in line with the Spanish language. It's because around a few years ago, we were told that Latino is preferable to Hispanic to describe people with Latin American heritage. I guess it makes sense because just because someone comes from a Latin American country and has a Spanish name doesn't necessarily mean that they speak Spanish if they were born and raised in the USA anymore than I can speak German because my relatives were from there. Although I should point out that most Brazilians don't refer to themselves as Latino and no Spanish refer to themselves as Hispanic, so the two terms are largely interchangeable. Hispanic could also refer to the small population of Spanish speakers in The Philippines, Equatorial Guinea and Morocco, all of which were Spanish colonies and still have a small minority of Spanish speakers. But Latinx was created because Anglo Americans can't stand using the term Latino because it's too Spanish sounding and are using the social justice warriors to push the word, in the hopes that eventually the word Latino will be replaced by Latinx regarding demographics.
Seeing as almost no one is using it with the exception of activists, feminists and LGBT types of people, I don't see it catching on.
Hispanic is a term that the US census started decades ago and only means "Spanish last name" but was basically used as a substitute for identifying Mexican/Mexican heritage because they would be otherwise identified by race as "white". Not all people of Mexican/Latin American/Puerto Rican/Cuban/etc. heritage have Spanish last names. (exp. former Mexican President Jorge Fox). Even though both of my parents are Mexican American my dad's last name is German(and so is mine). So lot's of people went for Latino which also seemed more inclusive of people from central/south/Caribbean America. Pew Foundation survey shows that 94% of people from these communities prefer the terms Hispanic or Latino. LatinX was brought up by some University Academics in the '70s but remained obscure and unused until lately by a bunch of Anglos who think they need to teach our community how to be more woke.

As a American I agree with you, it’s like when people tried to make whole new pronouns in English. Now English doesn’t have a authority on what’s proper English, hence lots of differences depending on where your from, but most agree that stuff like this is just really dumb and unnecessary.

As someone who is Hispanic i don't think the word "latinx" wouldn't be a big deal if the media didn't try to force it upon everyone. There are masculine words and there are feminine words. And when it’s a mixed group of people, it’s going to be a masculine. I had a discussion about this with a 21 year old girl. I strongly disagreed with the use of this term or the use of any term that updates language merely for the aim of furthering group identity in an already group identity-infested nation. She came at me with "yeah well I have a political science degree from a prestigious university ". And that explained a lot.

Grammatical gender is a feature of Romance languages that English speakers have always struggled with and this is blatant erasure of that. "Inclusivity" is learning Spanish so that puedes hablar con hispanohablantes. It's not at all inclusive to try and impose the most rigid form of Anglo-normal political correctness on the Spanish language.
Grammatical gender does not equal physical gender! The two may overlap in some instances but just because the they’re homonyms, that doesn’t mean they’re the same thing. The terms masculine and feminine are simply analogical terms used to give a name to the two categories of nouns, etc. in a language. When I say la gente in Spanish, I’m not implying that everybody is a woman. When I say la silla, I’m not implying that a chair has a vagina. And when I say los humanos, I’m not saying that all humans are men. And the reason some words that define groups of people in Spanish default to the masculine form when the group is mixed is not because the language literally favors the male, it’s because Latin (the language that Spanish descended from) had a grammatically neutral third category of nouns, and Spanish, through its evolution away from the Latin language eventually lost the neuter category and hence, the masculine category took its place. So the masculine category of nouns in Spanish isn’t just masculine anymore, it’s masculine AND neither. And again, this has nothing to do with physical gender! All I see when it comes to this Latinx movement is a bunch of monolingual gringos with extremely simple, narrow minds trying to force an Anglo centric view of gender on the Spanish language to make it more “inclusive” according to their (English) language rules. Spanish is not English and it is not your language! So go back to butchering your own language and leave Spanish out of it! It’s not going to change just because a few estadounidenses learned to say a few Spanish words in high school and suddenly decided that it’s grammar, that’s been the way it is for over a thousand years, offends them and that they’re too lazy to take the time to look at it from a non Anglo point of view.

In spanish the "@" has been used to replaced the o/a at the end of the word in writing when the gender is ambiguous or unclear. The problem with "latinx" isn't that they're inventing new words-we do that all the time and call it slang. The problem is that this is another example of codified language that exists ostensibly for the sake of inclusivity, but in reality is used to signal your level of education and political savvy to other cultural elitists. It supposedly exists to prevent nonbinary hispanic people from being "othered" by gendered speech, but in practice it is used as a shibboleth to "other" people who can't navigate the increasingly complex landscape of politically correct jargon.

I want to add something else. It goes back to the Latin European colonizers: French, Portuguese and Spaniards. The French called that part of the Americas "LATIN" America (Amerique Latine) for a reason. Because they wanted to make a distinction between the Northern America that is now the USA which was English-speaking and Protestant with their America which was Latin speaking and Catholic and this is why they called it "Latin America" to differentiate between the two Americas.
Latino IS gender inclusive in some ways. And anyone who speaks Spanish will understand what I mean. I don’t like this term “Latinx” because it is white washing our language. If you are a transgendered individual describing yourself in English, just describe yourself as the gender you wish to be referred to. 100% right. Hispanic is a term that the US census started decades ago and only means "Spanish last name" but was basically used as a substitute for identifying Mexicans/Meixcan heritage because they would be otherwise identified by race as "white" on the census (and you can't have Mexicans passing for the same as real (aka white anglo) Americans... Not all people of Mexican/Latin American/Puerto Rican/Cuban/etc. heritage have Spanish last names. (exp. former Mexican President Jorge Fox). Even though both of my parents are Mexican American my dad's last name is German(and so is mine). So lot's of people went for Latino which also seemed more inclusive of people from central/south/Caribbean America. Pew Foundation survey shows that 94% of people from these communities who live in America prefer the terms Hispanic or Latino. LatinX was brought up by some University Academics in the '70s but remained obscure and unused until lately by a bunch of Anglos (or should I say AnglX) who think they need to teach our community how to be more woke by imposing another new label on us.
Spanish was literally invented by white people. It's a European language, just like French and German. It didn't come from Latin America. So not really sure how it's "white washing your language".

Latinx is just a word built to merge genders... Latino is a male. Latina is female and that's just how the Spanish language was built, every word is fem or masculine. People are somehow bothered by it being too inclusive for some reason. I'm not really bothered by Latinx because that's not my biggest concern. I think using the word Latino is way more inclusive and annoying. Somehow I, a Mexican who has the same DNA as natives in the US am lumped with someone who is from Argentina (Argentinians are white). the word Latino is way too inclusive. Not only that but whenever I have to fill out applications are you Hispanic or Latino this question is not based on ethnic lines, this more or less just asks are you from the south of the border, and do you speak Spanish because Hispanic people would include people from Spain.
Most people so pro Latinx don’t even speak Spanish and want to change a lot of other words in Spanish as well
