Cinco de mayo is celebrated in southern states in 🇲🇽 mexico known as the batalla de Puebla. It’s not really popular in the northern states of Mexico. In the United States is celebrated by the Mexican American community because it was adopted as the el día de la raza. And of course like any other holiday in the United States is another day to make money 💰 so a lot of Anglo’s and none Mexicans get in the mix.
LatinX just infuriates me. The only people that used them are non hispanics and some latinos that don’t know spanish. It’s annoying how they just ignore all of the language and just change a word.

I am a Mexican immigrant, I am come from México, as well as my entire family, and I sort of feel like an outsider when I'm with 1st generation Mexican-Americans because they can speak fluent English, while I still struggle with pronunciation and writing, but I also help them with Spanish because I went to school in México. One of the challenges for me is mainly stereotypes and my struggle to speak English and understand American culture which is baffling to me. Through the years they have been the most willing to stay in contact especially since the pandemic. I think we both want to avoid stereotypes and give each other a better understanding of our own country. It is difficult, but not impossible.

I came with parents from Mexico. I grew up in an immigrant/ethnic community. I grew up in two cultures, the Mexican one at home, the U.S. one at school. It was hard to go "outside" of the bubble of our barrio. In the barrio you survived with your language, food, customs. However outside is a different world, one where you either adapt or you fall on your face. Difficult but possible to try to make something of yourself in the U.S. it is going to cost you a lot of hard work more so than your average peer. Some will make it, others will not but the "opportunities" are present. You have to go after them, they don't come looking for you.

In Catholicism “x” is used for female identity. Mary for instance is understood as “mediatrix” because she is female and the mother of Christ, whom is the Mediator. Latinx does the same because the speaker is female. This does not have association with the LGBT+ community.

My father came here for the opportunities America offered. My dad did his part to integrate into the American culture and expected me to as well. He was a proud American resident but when I was 16 he and I became American citizens. He did this so when I turned 18, I would be able to proudly serve our American country. America has been great for our family because we integrated into the American culture. I have not pushed aside my heritage because it still lives within me. As a 3rd gen American, a lot of us don't relate with 1st gen, so we call ourselves Chicanos, because we don't fit in with Anglo Americans either. But then Chicanos have embraced a sort of gang culture, living in barrios, listening to oldies, etc. Yet, many have educated ourselves, moved out of barrios, improved quality of life for their families. Even left Catholic traditions for a more theological understanding of their faith.

Erick Morales Latinx is an inclusive term used to refer to a group of people of Latin American decent in a gender-neutral way, so people belonging to this group that don’t identify as male feel they are being represented. I can see why a cis-gendered male would be hesitant to accept this term since the traditional term use ‘Latino’ fully represents them.

I remember going to visit my Aunt in a nursing home. I lived in a city that had always been at least 50% Hispanic. I was shocked to only see one Hispanic person in the entire place. I saw at least 100 people there but only one was Hispanic. I have always had a tremendous amount of respect for their family first values but that took my respect to a new level. Hopefully that value rubs off on the rest of us

A Latina can refer to herself as a Latina. A Latino as a Latino. But when both are referred to, they are Latinos because the word Latino, becomes gender-neutral within that context. The same rule applies to Romanian, Italian French, Catalan, and Portuguese. Yet none of these has been targeted with that X idiocy,.
What's kind of interesting is that she actually/mostly says Latino(s) and Hispanic(s) and primarily leans on these terms, not Latinx. She quite literally only says Latinx twice throughout her presentation, even though it's in the title of the workshop, and appears twice on the slides. It's almost as if, on some level, even she already knows that its use is not very practical or that maybe it just sounds odd to try to incorporate a word like Latinx as a normal/accepted term.

I am a Mexican immigrant, I am come from México, as well as my entire family, and I sort of feel like an outsider when I'm with 1st generation Mexican-Americans because they can speak fluent English, while I still struggle with pronunciation and writing, but I also help them with Spanish because I went to school in México. One of the challenges for me is mainly stereotypes and my struggle to speak English and understand American culture which is baffling to me. Yeah, there are so many different and unique subcultures, languages, sports, hobbies, social networks / media outlets, and political circuses that the shock to your system must feel ridiculous. Some day the organized mass chaos will make sense and then the only thing that can surprise you is when something strange does not happen. I would appreciate to hear your opinion on Joe Rogan's podcast interviews with Ed Calderon. I have made friends with several first and second generation americans from Mexico. Through the years they have been the most willing to stay in contact especially since the pandemic. I think we both want to avoid stereotypes and give each other a better understanding of our own country. It is difficult, but not impossible.

I came with parents from Mexico. I grew up in an immigrant/ethnic community. I grew up in two cultures, the Mexican one at home, the U.S. one at school. It was hard to go "outside" of the bubble of our barrio. In the barrio you survived with your language, food, customs. However outside is a different world, one where you either adapt or you fall on your face. Difficult but possible to try to make something of yourself in the U.S. it is going to cost you a lot of hard work more so than your average peer. Some will make it, others will not but the "opportunities" are present. You have to go after them, they don't come looking for you.
I never met a Mexican American in my life that did not share a familiar back story like yours. So I guess they are cookie cutter people.

My father came here for the opportunities America offered. My dad did his part to integrate into the American culture and expected me to as well. He was a proud American resident but when I was 16 he and I became American citizens. He did this so when I turned 18, I would be able to proudly serve our American country. America has been great for our family because we integrated into the American culture. I have not pushed aside my heritage because it still lives within me. In the end I am proud to consider myself an American who just happens to be Mexican. God bless America.

As a 3rd gen American, a lot of us don't relate with 1st gen, so we call ourselves Chicanos, because we don't fit in with Anglo Americans either. But then Chicanos have embraced a sort of gang culture, living in barrios, listening to oldies, etc. Yet, many have educated ourselves, moved out of barrios, improved quality of life for their families. Even left Catholic traditions for a more theological understanding of their faith.

I remember going to visit my Aunt in a nursing home. I lived in a city that had always been at least 50% Hispanic. I was shocked to only see one Hispanic person in the entire place. I saw at least 100 people there but only one was Hispanic. I have always had a tremendous amount of respect for their family first values but that took my respect to a new level. Hopefully that value rubs off on the rest of us

The census bureau came up with the term hispanic in 1969 and threw it at Mexican Americans. It only means Spanish speaking. Some accepted this term, others didn't. Hispanic is not a race, nationality, or ethnicity.
@Mustafa Alam it's not a race. Do your research. Many Mexicans are 100% Native to the American continent. And have no Spanish blood.

I laughed when she said they only make up 18% of the population. Even small towns that border Canada have higher than 18% demographics. The real number as of today is 42%. While every attempt to get an accurate census if met with lawsuits by Dems to keep the secret that Caucasians in the U.S. are the real minority today, large marketing companies know precisely how many are here.

I was told by a Hispanic coworker to go back to my home country. They are not ok of being called go back to their own country. But they can be rude and ask other to go back where they are from. What a joke? I hope Latino will have more top scientists, successful computer programmers and engineers and even create some multi billion firms.
I'm Latino, blessed to have been raised in NYC. Travelled to all major American cities. The only real racism I ever experienced was in Spain, wouldn't be served at a restaurant. Go figure. My white friend from Seattle got more upset than me. Go figure.
Latinx is like LineX or GasX or Dr. X. Adding an X at the and of an existing word doesn't legitimize the word like minx, linx or sphinx, because those words already had the x in them when they were created. Latinx is a joke. Hundreds of comments from Spanish speaking people saying the same should be your first clue to fabricate a different buzzword and try to pass it off as heroic.

Look I don't have anything against the young lady, but I couldn't listen to the whole lecture. It sounds like she's in a stop start motion. When she was speaking it was like: Every- word- was- spoken-very- slowly- one - by-one.

A lot of people that do presentations speak a little bit slower, because what if to other people it seems like they're speaking fast and can't understand them? Also because when they speak slower their words have like a bigger "impact" to the point they're trying to state, (if that makes sense.) But this girl just over-did it 😂😂

When she said Spanish is someone who comes from or has origins of or come from the country of Spain. I was about to argue, BUT YOU ALL SPEAK SPANISH!!
Then I thought I about England. As an American, I speak English but I would feel some type of way if you called me English. I would argue that’s for the boys across the pond (England).
I learned an important lesson here. I’m glad I’m taking a class at Portland State University that got me to watch this as to have an accurate source to cite on this topic

One problem is that the term Latino/a, I only became aware of it in the US. I never heard of Latino/a in In South America.

@nancy benigsohn it is generally understood as a given in South America. Same with Italy and Spain. Not every society lives in a check a box culture, where identity politics is embraced.

A Latina can refer to herself as a Latina.
A Latino as a Latino.
But when both are referred to, they are Latinos because the word Latino, becomes gender-neutral within that context.
The same rule applies to Romanian, Italian French, Catalan, and Portuguese.
Yet none of these has been targeted with that X idiocy,.
What's kind of interesting is that she actually/mostly says Latino(s) and Hispanic(s) and primarily leans on these terms, not Latinx. She quite literally only says Latinx twice throughout her presentation, even though it's in the title of the workshop, and appears twice on the slides. It's almost as if, on some level, even she already knows that its use is not very practical or that maybe it just sounds odd to try to incorporate a word like Latinx as a normal/accepted term.
