- Book recommendations based on popular tropes:
1) Normal girl helps royal save the kingdom
2) Morally gray male love interest with some sort of shadowy powers (AKA: Shadow Daddy)
3) Story through the eyes of different family members
4) The spoiled, wealthy kids
5) The many different gods
6) Depressing coming-of-age

Why don't we give her a children's book?
I’d recommend Dr. Seuss.
@@LairdErnsthis stuff actually bangs
those are all children's ya books
That was my thought as well!
@@AddilynneLastnameif something is ya its not a children’s book.
Her: “No gods.”
Me: “Okay, what do you have against Percy Jackson???”
Well it was indicated she is not a big reader which likely means that popular books like percy jackson weren't her thing, when recommending books to people who have been burnt out by having vastly different interests than most book readers it is best to get more information on why they didn't like the books since they aren't well informed and you are able to get a better feel for what they are looking for when reading.
@@aniheartsong5102Also give them a fast reading book that doesn’t start slow, someone burnt out won’t take long to ditch a book if it doesn’t hook them early enough
When it said "gods" I thought she was going to pull out Percy Jackson
I think everyone's first thought when she said "gods" was percy jackson
@@Jade.051as a burnt out I can confirm that if you don't give us something start fast we would put the book to our bookshelf in the if there isn't anything going on in the next 50 pages I currently read my book because I'm curious how it's going to end
P.S I usually read fantasy and detective books thats one of the reason I don't enjoy most books AKA I need to start fast or don't read it at all
I personally am obsessed with the genre of "Old gods in a modern world" exp: Percy Jackson
Basically stories with mythology and the like are my jam!
PS, Thanks for all the Book Recs!
FR
My first thought
Yess
You should read Lore it is so good!!
Threads That Bind!!
She might enjoy poetry books,
Many different occations, perspectives, and authors can be a beautiful thing.
Childrens books sound good, and some middlegrade books which can be adventerous yet calming.
But if she is looking for something tenically none of the listed categories, classics are great two!
Like The Lord of The Rings, The Odessy, or various Shakespeare plays like Macbeth.
Some of the best books are a little bit hard to find but totally worth it when you get to them.
You’re better then me cause I was like damn does she like anything
Don't worry; that was everyone's first reaction.
When I got into reading, I did not know where to start, so I tried a few things from every genre (many, many books later,) which was good, but it can take a long time to learn what is out there and what you like. Especially considering triggers, likes, and dislikes with tropes, and what you enjoy most without being forced to read something for school or peer pressure.
So, just like starting out and having patience with yourself, and even with closed-minded people, open heart, open mind. Otherwise, you will never be able to enjoy any book or its characters in a world far different than your own or find parts of yourself waiting there.
Finding genres and overlooking great books can be frustrating for those who love them, but there is still hope for them in their own ways to find beauty in the ink.
I feel like these two people in the video are the two sides of the coin: the ones who can shift into the worlds books allow us to fall into for a while and the ones who never see anything more than ink printed on parchment or at most, an after school special moral-lesson.
I hope everyone finds books that they love where they feel like they can belong and find them when they need them most.
The Odyssey wouldn't work, because it has gods in it. LOTR is a grey area, because there is a love story in it and some might argue that Arwyn helps save the day, and we all know Aragorn moves like a shadow because that's how he's the best at his job.
@@user-rh5ji6tr6v Right! When I said the Odyssey which I have not read in years I was thinking about the main character and the main theme of his adventures with various creatures of myth and somehow forgot there are Gods involved. 😂🫣
You're also right with the Lord of the Rings, but I think at this point this girl is going to have to make small compromises with this one because it is by all means worth the read and various elements can be overlooked for more of their preferred interests in stories. (Whatever those may end up being with how much she dislikes.)
I still think she should try her hand in poetry, there are so many options, muses and themes that don't have to be romantic. Poe could be a good place to start, maybe some of Mary Olivers or Robert Frosts work. Whatever the case compromise sometimes must be necessary and I hope in this game of helping her find something perfect for her we will succeed! In time.😅
I think she would like anything by Agatha Cristie and Stephen King, like Murder in the Orient express, Death on Nile,The Shining ext
To be fair.
A lot of books nowadays just repeat the same formula over and over because their audiences dont want anything new.
The audience has a selected a bunch of boxes that they want to be checked. And that's why there are stacks of books of basically the same story. Just like in your video.
Its truly difficult to find any new books that are memorable and have their own distinct voice.
Most books follow the trend and use the exact same formula one big book series set at some point, without knowing why the formula works.
They check off the same boxes as said trendsetter series and call it a day. Forgetting that a good book needs more than to just make money. It needs soul, effort and passion.
A lot of books you showed I gave a chance and lacked exactly that.
It’s like when the Hunger Games first came out and suddenly there were a bunch of other books set in a dystopian version of our world but with hardly the effort or understanding of why the Hunger Games worked so well in the first place.
Try, If we were villains by M.L Rio or Vicious by V.E Schwab. They are some of my favorite books and I have never read anything like them. Also Tj Klunes books are always a cozy read and I do not see a lot of books that are similar to his works. 😁
Actually, that's because books are art & products, so they have to work inside the supply and demand just like everything else in the capitalist market. People aren't used to new things because of the way the business shapes the art, not the other way around.
not real boooks but yeah ya does this constantly
@@claudiabcarvalho I was gonna say this as well, we only get what gets published. There are thousands of stories that fall outside these boxes that op talks about, but they never see the light of day because they don't get published and self-publishing seems to be considered "less than".
"Or has powers with shadows!"
"Godlike powers"
Me: Eh hm
NICO DI ANGELO
EVERY PERCY JACKSON HEROES OF OLYMPUS AND TRIALS- EVERY RIORDANVERSE CHARACTER!!!
Me recommending it anyway beacuse they will root for it when they have read it
This feels like a job for me. I'm a avid reader who rarely reads any of the book tropes just stated! XD
Me too lol ,everything she just listed and showed felt semi-attached to the Romance Genre. Nothing wrong with it but there are so many good books out there that don't involve anything she just listed.
@@arawin25 Exactly! Like, I get that it's the joke, but there are SO MANY amazingly written, heartwarming, funny, etc. books with amazingly 3D and deep characters, spectacular stories, and beautiful morals with none of this!
It's really just high fantasy that does most of this.
"He wants a pizza with nothing"
nothin?
How about none pizza with left beef?
She’s not tired of seeing these tropes. She’s tired of seeing them done badly. Shakespeare retold stories people already knew, but we remember him because he told them better.
I’m writing a book about our girl who’s the champion of the goddess of death (my own mythology I wrote a story bout lol) and she controls shadows I didn’t know tht was so popular 😭
Sounds fascinating! I'm writing or trying to write a book as well.
Oh, easy Harry Potter technically counts,so why not recommend that?
Princess diaries???🤣 Maybe she'll like that!
Im gonna take my shot and pitch a fantasy romance book that I'm thinking of starting:
Set in a South Asian fantasy kingdom still reeling from a recent (successful) revolution, _Of Knaves and Their Hearts_ centers on the ascendance of Amaneri, the Esteemed Chakravan (Lord Regent) of the Andhya Confederacy, and his budding relationship with his Avaadhyavan (Lord Protector) Thevin. While Amaneri and Thevin's romance is definitely a major plot, the bigger storyline is focused on Amaneri's ongoing and hard-fought efforts to re-establish the Confederacy's authority when the Prefectures have no intention of recognizing it. The shadow of Amaneri's past also holds him back, and he is continually forced to recognize he atrocities he has committed and accept it as part of his healing. All in all, it's meant to be a soft, introspective narrative on growth, temperance, and acceptance steeped in my cultural heritage and a fair bit of magic. I have quite a bit of the worldbuilding developed, but I'm still not completely sure of my major plot points. (Also this is most certainly a queer romance, Amaneri is genderqueer and Thevin is nebulously pan).
Thoughts and advice? I'd love to hear what any passing authors and readers would have to say!
I'll add that I want to write this book so that readers have the impression that they've started in the middle of a series, when it's just a standalone. It's through things that characters mention about Andhya's history that you get an impression of the kingdom's recent history. Amaneri's introspection and narratives, how he reflects on his decisions, and the way he relives the traumatic moments in his life are the reader's biggest clues into what exactly happened: kind of like you're a researcher piecing together history through the stories of the characters.
Ok the spoiled rich kid is the only valid one😂😂
I would love those family book recs about the different perspectives!!!
The Years of Rice and Salt. You'll never read another book like it
I’m looking it up now
KOTLC (keeper of the lost cities) I mean, there’s one dude who has the power over shadows but he’s not a love interest (at least I hope not) it’s in the young readers section, but most of the books near the end have a teenage maturity level (in a good way)
I usually can’t get passed enthusiastically over recommending. Next thing I know I suggested their reading list for the next 5 years. 🤦♂️
The god one wouldn't be me, I LOVE some good ol' op characters and the idea of gods itself
Bunny by Mona Awad
Adverbs by Daniel Handler
Eileen by Otessa Moshfegh
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Enjoy!!
“moves like a shadow or has shadow powers” RHYSAND IS BABYGIRL
I collect all my childhood books, plus other cool ones i find everywhere
Yep, kind of makes since. Afterall, she said she "kind of wanted to start reading" so she might have missed out on those fun kids books or find nostalgia in the types of books she hasn't read in awhile.
Ps if we were to look at this as an actual conversation had.
✨ pretend she’s here ✨
What's the series underneath Our Crooked Hearts? The covers are super pretty
Bridgerton by Julia Quinn! These are the special editions from Illumicrate
I think thats the first time I have seen Graceling in a line up
Maybe it’d be easier to ask what she wants to read.
*enthusiastically putting every single book I haven’t read yet mentioned in the comments on hold*
That's how I feel when suggesting things.
Shampoo bottles are Always the best when your roommate is out and forgot to fill up the toilet paper.
It's grim. But unwound was a interesting read. Next ones would be hatchet, among the hidden, and the tail of dextro (the one with the mouse).
Well i think i know some tittles that dont have that kinds of plots. For example:
"Legends & Latte" Travis Baldree
Story about girl that want to open a cafe after years of being assassin. You don't have typical romance here, gods, stupid rich main charakter and it's not cry machine xD
It's really good fantasy and slice of life book.
Bonus pionts - main character is an ogre, and her only love interest is also a girl (but romace here is in the background).
i’m being so honest, i’m picky about books just like this except i love coming of age stories- i’ve found that mystery books, historical fictions, POETRYY, or older stories (i like mythology) are the best options for me
Have you read anytjing by HP Lovecraft? It'd definitely be some older stories
I am with the difficult one. After a great amount of reading the same plot just with different names and covers, I'm avoiding it unless there is a very interesting twist to the basic formula. It's not fun if I can wonder everything in the story before it happens
The Hunger Games? It might fit the last one, but only the depressing part! Also, Chloe Gong's Secret Shanghai series!
Me, having read the shadow between us, deal with the elf king, and the shadow bound queen * sweating profusely *
She sounds like she would like dystopian books so maybe Divergent, Maze Runner or Hunger Games
Omg! Is this Graceling? I loved that book! I remeber that the protagonist's love interest was a great guy, very sweet and supportive. BTW, my sister' s favourite was Fire.
I want her book collection so bad
The art of war
Personally, The Wild Robot and The Wild Robot Escapes is a favorite
Guardians of Ga'hoole fits that criteria... Until you start re-reading it and realize how F*ed up it was...
I agree with you, but I also know that I enjoyed that as a child.
@@TheAuburnSuns Same! I'm about to start re-reading the ableist wolf series soon. I don't know what in my enjoyed owl h0locost, but, uh, yeah... I started re-reading through audio books, and... yeah, little me ate that up... and so does big me!
@@avaarrow7478 Ableist wolf series... that- I remember that...! I swear, I looked at my library history and a lot of it was that series...
@@TheAuburnSuns Wolves of the beyond? Yeah, Kathryn Laskey was my childhood.
@@avaarrow7478 I don't fully remember it, but there was a bear one too, right? Something or other about bear slavery?
The poor Grishaverse had most of these 😭
this is me when I recommend books to my cousins, so I just give up and give them graphic novels.
I saw glass on your self and I literally just finshed read that
Anyone else pausing to get book titles for recommendations?
Give her a map so she can leave
Nonfiction! Not just for school, plenty of nonfiction are engaging, fun reads!
Heyy! Daughter of Smoke and Bone was one of my favs!!
I mean, she didn’t mention anything about love triangles soooo… THE HUNGER GAMES IT IS!
I love that I'm writing one without any of that lol
The thing is, I just want a sapphic book. I love cozy fantasy bc a lot of the books are sapphic. I saw graceling, (I LOVE THIS BOOK DON’T GET ME WRONG) and I was like, ‘omg she looks so cool.’ Or ‘omg is she aromantic? Representation!’ And then went along and she fell in love with a prince (and a lot more too.) once again no hate.
Stooooooppp glass identical butned etc are soooo good
She might like classics!
It doesn't sound like she wants "boring" books she just doesn't want to read fantasy 😅
Give them Astrid Lindgren's books, they'll love it (and they're great)
I would recommend the hunger games by Suzanne Collins to her, she didn't mention anything that the hunger games have
... New cozy murder mystery trend books. If you hit the right series you can have found family instead of blood family? I dunno
The second one was literally We hunt the Flame (spoiler)
Nasir literally is an assassin who moves like a shadow and has shadow powers this couldn’t be more him lol
To be fair horror stories or thrillers could work. But that sounds like someone with a very lets say clear preference
Six of crows might stretch some of the rules e.g. a girl that can move as silently as a shadow, multiple perspectives but it still a really good read.
That’s perfect! I don’t own them yet cause I’ve been eyeing some special editions haha
Give her an encyclopedia
Wait wait wait im super intrigued about ghe books with different family members' pov???? The books look amazing too i need the titles please
Sci fi, the classics or dystopias. Choose your poison. (Personally I would recommend 'the trial' by franz kafka and 'handmaid's tail'.)
I have an all in one package deal: Warriors
And that is the point where I recommend Harriet Porber, the t4t romance books by Chuck Tingle.
I was trying to think if my book hits any of these… I was doing good until I remembered the multiple cosmic beings with god-powers. None of them are main or even secondary characters, but one of them does play a major role in the protagonist’s arc, so… 😬
Okay so I want more book recs I like fantasy and romance (preferably clean) I don’t really dislike anything so if anyone has anything please tell me.
she just needs an adult book, not YA. easy!
Red queen is on my tbr
I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO LIKES HUSH HUSH
Murderbot Diaries (series) by Martha Wells would satisfy that person😂 unless she has a problem with science fiction 😊
Hey everyone!! What are those family member perspectives books that were stacked in a rainbow ?? :0
Ooh! Ooh! I know this one! The Gone-Away World. None of those tropes and it's a totally wild ride.
Gotta say though, if you don't like tropes, maybe reading isn't for you.
But Ellen Hopkins is such a great writer!!!! lol calls out all the book I read.
There is one book that still works that comes to mind
You’re next by Kylie Schaeter(last name might be wrong sorry)
I would recommend Spellslinger
Not here coming for our shadow kings, personally I’m here all the way for Xaden and Rhy
Hey, if you guys wanna read about something mythology, you should check out children of blood and bone!
OMG I LOVE THE RED QUEEN!!! ❤️❤️❤️
The Mistborn trilogy might be a good place for her to start, Skyward, Waterfire Saga, Slated, The Forgetting is a nice and short lil standalone, The Ranger's Apprentice, Through Wolf's Eyes. Ok yes that last one is about a girl who does save the king at one point but A thats not the main plot and B she is many things but unassuming and bland are NOT one of them XD
Omg! I got Light Lark and Night Bane for Christmas!!! Can't wait to read them!!!
The first book that immediately came to mind was Strange the Dreamer❤
The Renegade Trilogy is pretty good, would recommend. (Even though I’ve only read 2/5 of the 2nd book so I don’t know if my rec carries that much weight.)
you expressions are so great ahaha
I know this skit isn't serious, but I see her points, she wants to read something that she'll like, and she doesn't like those kind of things.
That's why I don't like alot of book channels, all of them basically have just the same ten books, saying you need to read it! Or everyone should! When you know nothing about the person watching the video.(I get pushing books you like, it's Just they way they do it, and they NEVER show the description!)
The booktube/tok communities comes off like A hive mind to me, always stuck to the same books, so I'll just stick with my mix of books, books that have Tv shows or movies counterparts, baced on the books. It's working well for me, I'm enjoying everything I read.
Science fiction? We might have to talk about how low her bar is for "godlike powers" (what powers count as god-like), but apart from that ... the Odyssey-saga of Evan Currie is great, Star Trek only occasionally has gods and similar beings (some who want space ships) 😛, it's been a while since I read them but the Vorkosiga-saga by Lois McMaster Bujold should also fit her criteria ...
I was going to say percy jackson then she said no gods
I SAW THE SHADOW AND BONE SERIES.
I like Everlost 💕
Well, you're not supposed to love the characters in Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars. That what the TV shows made us do. The authors were scholarship holders in fancy schools and they both wrote those books to express their distaste for those brats. Cecily Von Ziegesar is Gossip Girl, and Sara Shepard is -A.
Love the comedy. Perhaps the so called non genre fiction? Or genre books which transcend genre. Ursula K Le Guin. Roger Zelazny. Cordwainer Smith.
easy, just read the Gulag Archipelago, or Brothers Karamazov, Crime and Punishment, or Master and Margarita, Heart Of Darkness is a nice and easy start
Discworld. Not new, but they're good.
Since I see book recommendations in the comments, does anyone know some YA (preferably fantasy but not necessary) without romance involving the main character? I love YA but have put so many books down because of the romance
Horror. Suggest classic horror books from Stephen King and John Saul. Or scifi, like the Black Ocean series. Or my husband wrote a really fun adventure about a paladin with a djinnie sidekick called Paladin's Wish
Jenny Diski - Monkey's Uncle!
Just in case you somehow haven't read her stuff, I wanted to recommend Tamora Pierce to you. :)
The Kite Runner, Brave New World?
Ok, but what if those are all the types that you enjoy? 👀
I hate the exact same tropes except the super depressing one... but I don't like coming of age stories :(
