    The approach is always bumpy coming into the valley. I've never had a smooth one. Valley thermals make for a fun trip every time.
    But man, he slammed that thing down, didn't he? haha Maybe he was reading the alt in meters instead of feet? ;)

    Landings in Las Vegas... How well I know... Desert Thermals or very High winds... some times it can be Rock and Roll and hang on for your seat... but for my umpteenth landing here the Pilots have always gotten me down. I always assume that they want to get here as bad as I do!! :)

    @jameshoffman552 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Pilot forgot to flare? Note the lack of pitch-up in the 5 seconds before touch-down (slam-down).

  • @BadenCityFire
    @BadenCityFire 10 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    that is the hot air there making the landing so bumpy

    • @jameshoffman552
      @jameshoffman552 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      BadenCityFire - that and the lack of flare (roundout). Hot air decreases aerodynamic performance, including increased landing length (of already runway-hungry 747) so may be some urgency to plant Jumbo close to the threshold.

    I made this trip on VIR43. Had a nervy landing where we dropped like 10ft very sharply every so often on final approach. Was cool though. Great view of the deserts just a shame we couldn't really see the damn as it was under us.

    I flew from Atl. to Lax a few weeks ago, and it was the best landing ever. I did not feel the wheels touching down. All I felt was when the pilot put the engines in reverse thrust which threw my body forward that was when I knew we were on the ground.

    I really wasn't expecting it to seem like that rough of a landing, but when the wheels touched, I was like "Jesus Christ! That was loud!" If I were to guess it was ground effect. McCarran is one of those airports with a pretty hot runway, plus the surrounding terrain. It's like a pocket of warm, rising air, and then once you're within a wing's length of the ground, instant sink. Just an assumption, but that would be my vote as to why the smack.

    • @coriscotupi
      @coriscotupi 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ryan McNeilly Ground effect is just the opposite of what you describe. Once you're within a wing's length of the ground there is actually LESS sinking and more lift than higher up.

    Hot air rising later in the day... it's normal for LV. And it is not a problem for any modern aircraft. But it might give you the queasies if you don't expect it. lol

      Ryanair are bumpy and approaches can also be a little shaky

    • @robertjan2839
      @robertjan2839 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      True to that James! Do you want to know why? RyanAir is a low-cost airliner so they don't like to pay for experienced pilots. British Airways or Virgin Atl. like to have ATPL Pilots (1600 flight-hours or more). I have around 150 to 200 hours by the time I get my Pilot License so that's a big reason why. You will be SAFE.
      Another good reason is the airplane haha. an Airbus A320-200 or B737-300 is not the most comfortable airplane (I can tell, sat many times in the cockpit simulator) but that's totally fine for a 1-2hours flight.
      And with the shaky aviation market be ready to see a young captain and first officer real soon (Captain should be around 35 years old and the First officer 20). 1 Pilot flies the Airplane and the other does the Radio. You might get the first officer instead of the captain but both should be able to land safely.
      So you should buy a helmet or something like that lol. I'll try my best in a few months hehe.
      But.... don't forget only a small group of elite pilots will fly a B747 or Airbus A380. So you had absolutely no rookie on the joystick, maybe the pilot was tired (+10Hours flight). Wind can be a big factor, especially coming from the side but from what I can tell Las Vegas McCarran should be an easy Airfield.
      I hope you guys had a great time in Las Vegas! The Pilot school is located in Arizona so I'm not that far away.

      737 800 is a great plane that Ryanair uses. But I imagine Ryanair employs pilots that have enough experience for short flights

  • @electronicworld6851
    @electronicworld6851 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Let’s just think here, it’s a big a** plane and do you really expect a few hundred thousand ton jet is gonna make a smooth landing. I’m a pilot for British Airways and I Fly our 747-400 series aircraft and even for years of practice it’s really hard to make a decent landing because the plane is so heavy.

  • @captbosco
    @captbosco 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you think that was bumpy you do not have any idea what bumpy is. You'll know it was bumpy when the passengers are screaming and praying for God to let them live.

  • @stevengravett4461

    There's no excuse for such a hard, sloppy landing. If he was coming in too high he should have corrected it earlier.

    • @RGV250FORSALE
      @RGV250FORSALE 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Gary Gray Are you a pilot? - NO!. You've no idea what crosswinds the pilot had to deal with so don't make stupid comments which are only your personal opinion and have no basis in fact.

    • @austindarrenor
      @austindarrenor 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ewan Black That hard landing wasn't caused by crosswinds, Einstein. But if it was July and the outside temp was 110F then it looks like the lack of lift in that hot desert air took the pilot by surprise.
      And how would you know whether I was a pilot or not?

    • @RGV250FORSALE
      @RGV250FORSALE 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We'll agree to differ - but hard put down's are invariably down to cross winds - as for how would I know if you're a pilot or not - well let's just call it an educated guess!

    • @gerardmoran9560
      @gerardmoran9560 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Settle down boys. Whatever the temp, you can muff the flare. It was well within the design limits for sink rate at touchdown. We've all done it now and then. Skip the temperature and cross-wind stuff. If the pilot flying had a say I suspect he'd say it was a safe landing within design limits but not his best. It's happened on the 74, Concorde and Space Shuttle. All with no damage save the ego.
