Idk how to explain it, but this is one of the few pictures where Mike looks genuinely happy. It makes me kind of sad, I know he gets a lot of flack for being kind of an egotistical jerk, but I think there was a brief period where he was just extremely grateful for the success of the Beach Boys. It must have been so exciting to be that famous and successful at that time. That level of fame gets to a lot of people's heads.
Always thought this should have been released as a single, great song, I know it was originally for the Castells but their version is far superior, love it the way Brian sings 'wife' in a way only he could do, sheer quality..
Not really. More Stoller and Lieber. I peg this song heavily inspired by “Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart” and further, you can hear the song clearly. I don’t hear the specter influence much on here beyond the percussion instrument choices. Wilson obviously liked Spector, and it’s presumed that’s who he was channeling…but it’s probably a way of him to avoid saying much about his actual interests. When he went through his paranoid state he was obsessed with Spector, and he wanted to top Spector too, but the influence isn’t really as pronounced. Listen to “What Is the Secret of Your Success?” By the coasters and you’ll hear where Smile and Smiley Smile came from, all rolled into one. FWIW, the Beatles were obsessed with them too, and the Van Dyke Parks partnership seemed to be created over conversations about them and tapping into that brand of music to compete with the British Invasion… Somehow Spector sucked all the air out of the room: even California Girls has a nod to “Girls Girls Girls” buried in the mix in the backing vocals…further, when Stoller and Lieber retired (stuck in the middle with you), Wilson maybe coincidentally seemed to retire as well.
All I know is that this would have made an excellent B side or an addition to Surfer Girl. I never really enjoyed when the drums went off beat at the end, but that doesn't stop the song from really good.
This originally was a song for another band, so they didn't really spend as much time on the instrumentation, but it is still a solid song. I thought that the drums were like out of phase at first too, but then I remembered that they double tracked the drums. It gives it a pretty big sound
@@No1emilybrowningfan The Beach Boys version was recorded in November 1963 IIRC, and the Castells overdubbed their vocals in January of 1964. And yes, it would have been a welcome addition to Shut Down, Volume 2. For some reason I spaced out and forgot it was recorded after the sessions for Surfer Girl.

Originally PERFORMED by the Castells. As it clearly says. Everyone knows it's written by Brian and GIVEN to the Castells originally. It seems everyone knows - but you.
originally performed/recorded by the Beach Boys even if they originally didn't release the record, not the Castells, who got the song as a brian wilson hand-me-down, since the backing track had value

man i love the beach boys
How can you not love them? I mean the Beach Boys who recorded this song and all those during this period.
Brian channeled Phil Spector from day one. And Brian beat Phil--as a musician and a human being
Brian didn’t kill anyone
@@ItsJustLiam.thats exactly the point he is making
I love the tubular bells, really great touch.
If I get married, ever, this is definitely coming on at the wedding.
What part?
Married yet?
Same. But I’ll be playing it with my brothers. Only in my dreams…
Damb they were great, miss them brothers from Hawthorne.
Hold on, The clappers are not even ready!

I love this song
Sounds like their earlier hit, The County Fair.
I wish that they would have put this on Shut Down Vol 2. Great song.
Reuses the melody from the "Surfin' Safari" track "County Fair". The backing track is very unusual for The Beach Boys as that time. Spector-ish.

This song is beautiful
First time hearing this, great great band
Crazy for not releasing this originally, what a great song. How good must you be to have this in the can and not release it?
The Beach Boys in a nutshell more often than not unfortunately if their archives are any indication.
Brian gave this song to the Castells.
All I know is that this would have made an excellent B side or an addition to Surfer Girl. I never really enjoyed when the drums went off beat at the end, but that doesn't stop the song from really good.
While I was mixing this song I listened back and I thought I had screwed up the sync lol. (I hadn't heard the song before)

It really should have been on Surfer Girl. Get rid of one the lackluster instrumentals and replace it with this.
This was a 64 production so would have gone great on Shut Down Volume Two, removing one of that albums many fillers

Recorded in November 1963, with the Castells vocals being overdubbed in January of 1964.
Great song!!
Now I have to go sit at the piano and figure out what that one chord in the chorus is. The beauty of Brian’s writing. Sounds 4 Seasons-ish. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
The chorus (Ab) has a C major The three chord isn’t often used as a major chord. Infrequently utilized. Super cool.
Excellent job buddy!! Polished off one of my favourite beach boys tunes :)
thank u so much
I love this song. Girl wins Boy🎉😊 perfect sound. Thank you, rare i cant find it. It was on an album?
Very nice! What’s the next Beach Boys redux? Getcha Back? Haha. Love the work put into these. 👍
Classic!
the beach boys
You're correct
nice, a like from us.
Dig this tune. Lyrics are a little cheesy, but man what an excellent production. Check out those Bells!
What is cheesy to one person can mean everything to the next.
Would love flac files for your work. Seriously, these dry mixes are perfect. Any chance a link could be spared? You would make my year
when was this recorded, cuz this sounds like it could've been county fair for surfin safari?
Awesome song and I look like Dennis Wilson
So you pickup a lot of girls!
Marco Zucchi yes I do me and my Cousin
@@JayPotter He looks like Mike Love?
Sounds very good. Is this a B-Side?
Thanks! This was an unreleased track actually, since it was originally meant for the Castells.
