    I actually cried watching this episode back when first aired back in 2004 because it showed that Mark could have followed a path in life where he excelled and was happy and that he still could have still chosen that path if he had the courage to step outside what he has been programmed to see as a responsible path, but his father's bullying has destroyed his ability to do this

    Might be number 1 for me. It's the most backstory heavy episode in many ways, right down to Mr Rasheed's shop and the out of date humuus incident that only Mark seems to remember. It grounds the show in time a bit, as sort of a hangover from the 90's, especially with Jez's bitter rant about Britpop and Four Weddings. A lesser show would've just made Jez and Hans' music stuff be the type of landfill indie that was concurrent with when these episodes were made. Also Peter Capaldi's oh-so-clever professor might be my favourite one time character, just pitch perfect "slaying the middle-brow sacred cows" and pretending not to have heard of Four Weddings. Mark stalking April shows the strength of earlier seasons feeling high stakes with massive elation and crazy risk taking, as well as the inevitable humiliation and cringe. The show definitely became more dry and cynical as it went on, which is completely in keeping with characters growing out of naivety, but I did miss some of that manic excitement episodes like this have.

    2:51 Jeremy's Manager is pretty much a re-working of this episode [Mark tags along with Jez to get a woman, Jez gets the opportunity to replace Hans in performing] but there is enough changes [such as Mark being involved more in the music plot] so it's not too noticeable.

  • @theMoporter
    @theMoporter 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I really like this episode because it's very thematically coherent and well-paced. Mark, Jez and April are all self-saboutaging due to their low confidence. This is why Jez's b-plot doesn't feel like a total distraction. He'd a more transparent version of the same character flaw that causes Mark to stalk a stranger, lie about his motives, and obsess over Sophie and that causes April to brush off every red flag.
    The "shy, low-confidence guy with a shared passion in your interests and seemingly naïve motivations" persona that Mark presents himself as is a lot less frightening when you consider she can't hear all the sleaziness of his inner monologue. The performance is what sells that timidity and optimism - it would feel a lot less likely if she wasn't holding herself so tense, her speaking so anxious. I can see it being relatable and nonthreatening to a young person who actually has that kind of personality. Similarly, you can imagine this being romanticised over the decade before they next met.
    Mark is pretty reprehensible on paper, but the hope that he could maybe turn his life around and be a more genuine person by connecting with people and pursuing his happiness - and subsequent catharsis of him causing his own return to misery - really makes it easier to swallow. You can't help but feel bad for someone that desperate and self-destructive. He isn't at "Merry ChristMark" levels of calculating and unhinged at this point in the series, after all.
    Side note: it may seem unrealistic that April would be interested in Mark at all, but I had a crush on David Mitchell when I was a teenager too. Mitchell having a surprisingly large number of fans inspired a section of That Mitchell and Webb Book. It's also about a stalker, as it turns out.

    • @davidz3879
      @davidz3879 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Why do you think that Jez has low confidence? He has the opposite problem.
      How & when does April self-sabotage?
      Mark & April are both very interested in history. Without that in common, it's highly unlikely that she'd be attracted to him.
      DM has many fans because he's rich & famous; that's not surprising. He wasn't popular before he became famous.

      Mark could have considered actually becoming a mature student part-time, like bt taking evening classes back in London. He could have stopped obsessing over Sophie by realising other women can like him.
      Jez could have simply not tried to nick a chocolate bar lol

      @@theMoporter At this point, Mark has never been in a relationship & he's clearly always been unpopular. In s1 & 2, Sophie, Valerie & April are the only girls who show any attraction towards him - Valerie & April only briefly. He therefore concentrates on pursuing Sophie.

      Jez would have been fine if he hadn't done the shoplifting as he'd have got to the gig on time. Maybe if Mark had fessed up about not being a student [as unlikely as that is given he couldn't do that about the wedding in series 4] maybe he could have had a long distance relationship with April [as she does seem to like him] but that's assuming she'd have been cool about him lying!

    Mark calculating how low he could go when paying for a bottle of wine really told us a lot about Mark’s penny pinching nature, and is consistent with his “Four naans Jeremy?” outrage in another episode around this era.

    I never really liked this episode solely for Mark's behaviour towards April.
    Mark is a desperate man at the best of times, but this was probably his lowest point and it was just weird and offputting to me. Felt slightly out of character for him imo

      Totally in character IMO. Finds a girl into history and convinces himself that she's "the one". Abandons her forever despite his obvious feelings for her because he's too cowardly to come clean

    • @jamesatkinsonja

      In universe explanation is that she has work commitments [she mentions them before saying 'I'd love to see the English Rivera!]. Real life reason is that Rachel Blanchard's schedule was limited [hence why she only cameos in this episode+ 'Jeremy's Big Break' while being absent from 'The Man Show'].

      @@davidz3879 She was quite busy around 2004 according to IMDB credits [including a regular role in USA Drama '7th Heaven']. She dropped out of series 3 to do the Samuel L. Jackson film 'Snakes on a plane'. The commentary for 'Wedding' indicates she was only in the UK for a couple of weeks for series 2 and 4 [as they wanted her in a bit more in 4 but her time was limited] and her stuff was block filmed which might explain why Nancy didn't return after 4. She's always been very busy in USA TV including 'Flight of the Concords' the same year as series 4. [Recently she was in the Ben Affleck film Deep Water and a regular on Amazon Prime's 'The summer I turned pretty' and was one of the leads in a 50 episode USA show You, Me, Her before that].
