  • Wine-Searcher's Wine Director, David Allen, Master of Wine, tastes Penfold’s popular Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon blend from the 2019 vintage.
Penfolds was founded in 1844 when Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold arrived in Australia from England. He purchased 500 acres (200 hectares) of land in what is now the Adelaide suburb of Magill. Penfolds grew to become one of the leading names in the Australian wine industry in the 20th century.
The Koonunga Hill brand takes its name from a vineyard in the Barossa Valley - it was first produced in 1976. Today this wine is a multi-regional bled comprising fruit sourced from throughout South Australia. This wine aged for 14 months in seasoned French and American oak hogsheads.
Penfolds has had a complex history in recent decades with various mergers and acquisitions. Today, the company is a part of Treasury Wine Estates, an international group that includes brands such as Matua, Beaulieu Vineyard, Beringer and Wolf Blass.

More modern styles in France for sure, but with some pedigree / history in that Bordeaux used to be blended with some Syrah many years ago, I believe. And there's a (rather more expensive then Koonunga Hill) blend made by Chateau Palmer today adding Syrah to the Bordeaux blend, albeit a relatively low percentage.

You are indeed correct, I have heard of Palmer's wine, but am more familiar with the fact that Caroline Frey from Chateau La Lagune has made some Bordeaux/Rhone blends in association with one of their other brands Jaboulet.

I've always been very impressed with Koonunga Hill and a pretty big fan. To me, it's a quintessential example of Australian wine and a quite consistent and excellent value. I think it punches above it's price point. I've always been curious to know how many bottles/cases of Koonunga Hill Penfold's makes every year. It certainly must be in the millions, right?

I’m in Goolwa drinking it now. Woohoo.

I liked its concentration, richness and structure - I did find the alcohol a little on the high side though! As for production volumes I can't find any information there - I'll try and get back to you if I do ever find that information.

Incidentally, when did most people come across a mulberry other than in a wine description or a handbag brand... Not a criticism of the video, commonly used and I know what you're getting at. Enjoying a bottle of the wine whilst enjoying watching. Chin chin.

Cheers to you too - I think you make an interesting point. I use mulberry as an intermediate, almost purple fruit, a juicy dark red, half way between red and black fruit, and I've convinced myself I've tasted mulberries, but if you put me on the stand and ask exactly when I can't name an instance for sure. So in probability I'm going along with a conventional usage I've learned from other tasters. Interesting point, i shall probably carry on using the term, but may feel uneasy doing so!

Is your baby sleeping nearby?? Why are you whispering?

Thankfully I'm past the sleeping baby stage. Sorry - I'm not actually whispering, in fact I am speaking up and using a microphone - I've since found that if you record on an iPhone you need to boost the volume before posting your videos. If you watch any of the Penfolds videos we are publishing this week you will see the volume on those is much higher, the only answer for this on though is to increase the volume both on your device and on TH-cam.

No idea why Vivino rates this 3.7 and some of the worst supermarket dross that costs 5€ has 3.9-4.1 ratings on that app.
I think this is an absolute banger value for money bottle of wine.

I normally reckon buying a Penfolds wine is an assurance of a good level of quality, I can't ever remember a nasty surprise and there have been so many positive experiences.
