Two things. Besides diode position, you can make a diode ladder (google Prairie Instrument Works' blog post) to finetune the clipping knee. Secondly, for the transistor gain stages, the diodes also come with a large-ish cap in series, so I'm sure you can look at it from an AC and DC perspective when you set it up.
