  • In this quick video, we take a look at a Tomshoo wood gas stove. Costing only £20, this stove is going to make a great addition to the kit. Deigned to burn wood, spirits, cones and charcoal it makes cooking outdoors easy. The way it burns is clean and very efficient. Thanks for watching.........

    Two things. Do not use the little alcohol cup as an ash pan, because it will significantly decrease air-flow to the base. If an ash pan is needed, cut a disc from aluminum flashing that is slightly larger than the stove base, and elevate the edge all around to hold it in place during use. Good air-flow to the base is especially important in top-down burns.
    That fact brings me to my second point, a wood-gas stove like this performs far better with a top-down burn. Properly loaded, no additional fuel or even attention is needed for the entire burn. Another advantage of the top-down burn is that it consumes the fuel at a much more efficient rate, so it lasts longer.
    For all these reasons, it would be nice if all demo-videos of wood-gas stoves showed the stove being used in top-down burn form.

      Yeah, you need to fill the stove with sticks or pellets first, and start the fire after, from the top... The flame and smoke, will go down and will be returned to the top, to be reused.... This is the advice i want to give you too, but i seen Robert's post and i just replied here.

    Hi. great review! I used wood gas stove quite a long while. FYI, wood gasifier stove also known as TLUD stove, ( means top lit up draft ) should filled with thicker wood at its bottom , and smaller one on top. the fuel level can't be higher than the gas hole and lit it from top. You will get longer, cleaner smokeless, and more efficient burn. more than 90% of reviewer in youtube use it the wrong way. hope this help.

    I just ordered this on Amazon earlier today. I was a bit suspect in how this would perform in comparison with the solo stove so I checked out your video. Im happy to say that it seems to work just as well and for a third of the price and also packs down smaller. Cant wait until it comes in! Thanks for the review, you have earned a new sub :)

    Fantastic review! Your videos are original, informative and entertaining. Always looking foreword to the next one. I may not have looked twice at this stove before but now I am completely interested. What a cool design, and for a great price. Thanks a bunch Mark.

      Hi Will, many thanks for watching my friend :) Yeah for the money they are a great stove. Very well made, light weight and they store away quite neatly. Since buying it, I haven't had to make as many fires over the summer for drinks or food. So it has been quicker and safer, especially during all that hot weather we had. I'm sure it will also get used quite a lot now things are cooling down. So for the cost it has been worth it and certainly worth a look if you are interested in these kind of stoves. If you look on amazon or eBay, there are hundreds of different versions, but from experience this one isn't too bad :) Thanks again Will, have a great day, all the best, Mark :)

    I bought this in 2018 identical to the one in the video.
    Yesterday I bought the updated version which is taller and has the handle.
    The updated version, in addition to being slightly larger and higher, has a much larger ash tray (it is exactly as large as the diameter of the stove, so the risk of igniting the ground below is zero.
    These stoves are great and everyone should have one even if you don't go camping.
    They can also be useful at home (in an emergency) or during a trip, weight and dimensions are negligible.
    Thanks for the video

    Great review. I have one of these, I have been using it for some time, and it has performed well, it's really sooty now, but it hasn't warped with the heat, and I have kept it burning for lengthy periods of time. I rarely use the trivets as my mess tins and frying pan rest securely on the wind shield without disturbing the airflow. I have even taken off the wind shield to roast meat on a hook from a tripod. Its a really versatile stove. It's easy to feed as well because of the gap in the windshield.

    GREAT !! a few points here:-
    Excellent video showing everything clearly & simple. ( & no silly music ) clear explanation.
    Amazing design , the way it all packs away. & the way it adapts to many methods of use.
    Very good as emergency back up at home for hot water , soup, & coffee etc.
    you could even boil water for a ' Hotwater Bottle ' for extra warmth camping or in a Power Failure situation at home.
    A VERY USEFUL thing to have even if you never go camping ! its cheap & compact & endless supply of fuel FREE of CHARGE & READILY AVAILABLE to ALL .
    Warm food & drinks Anywhere if you have a bag of twigs & small sticks. BRILLIANT !
    MINI Barbecue for people with limited outdoor space ?
    Teach the kids Outdoor cooking skills with fire etc.

      Hi PAUL,A1 many thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment :) You make some good points in your comment. It is certainly one of the best wood stoves that I own and use. It burns very well and very efficient. Most important, you can get a brew made in around 5 minuets lol. I mainly use wood as my fuel source, but like you mention there are other options out there for the stove. Thanks again and have a great day, all the best, Mark :)

    Actually the little grill that comes with the stove works very well and it’s very durable. Here’s the trick. First you have to wait until the flames die down, then you have to remove the pot stand and place the grill directly on the stove top, where it will rest quite securely.The other little gift that came with my Tomshoo, is the 21” bellows which has saved the burn on many as occasion without being engulfed by the smoke. It’s just the best gassifier stove. And also, with the complimentary accessories, a complete package.

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Robert, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :) I will have to try the little grill that came with it. I think I still have it somewhere :) You got a good deal getting the bellows as well. I might have to get on the phone LOL. I agree Robert, they are a great stove, mine is usually with me somewhere :) I use the spirit stoves quite a lot, more out of convenience, but I do prefer cooking on the Tomshoo. Thanks again and have a great weekend, all the best, Mark :)

      Hi JOON B.E, many thanks for watching the video and taking the time to comment :) The best way to burn the wood in the stove is to stack it vertical and light a fire on top. Most people use them this way as it burns for longer and it uses less wood. But for a quick cup of tea, I just make a small fire in the bottom of the stove and put the wood on top like a conventual fire. I hope this helps, all the best Mark :)

    I bought this stove after watching this vid, used it last weekend on a camping canoeing trip on loch Lomond, first imprecation is its a good little stove maybe a little heavy if backpacking but in a canoe know problem. used it all 3 nights, also used it without the pot stand for a fire under the tarp on a rainy night. also used the grill to flame grill 2 quarter pound burgers which where cooked to perfection, versatile little stove. thanks for the vid Mark or I probably wouldn't of got one lol.

    Excellent review. I have an old "interlocking" fire box that folds flat, that I'm rather fond of. But, I will be ordering one of these as well. • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you my friend :) I also like the interlocking stoves myself. The small bushbox stove that I have is a great stove- a bit fiddly at times, but I like the small compact size. But these wood gas stoves are something else. If you have the room to carry one, then I would say it is worth it. This is a cheap stove compared to some, but it is a nice size when set up and feels very sturdy. Thanks again for watching, All the best, Mark. :)

    • @takeitoutside6049

      I'm sure you will be very happy with it when it comes :) I haven't had time to try it yet, but a few people have recommended stacking the wood inside and lighting it from the top like an upside-down fire. Hi Leslie, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :) LOL, no commission unfortunately :) I'm sure you will be very happy with it. You will find that it burns quite cleanly. You still want to make sure the wood is as dry as possible, but on the whole I don't find anything tastes too smoky. Have a great week, all the best, Mark.

    300g of wood pellets, yes the cat litter kind, burns for almost an hour!

      Many thanks for watching John :) I will have to try the cat litter pellets. Quite a few people have mentioned how well they work. Have a great weekend, all the best, Mark :)

    Thanks for a nice video Mr Bailey, but this is not the way, a wood gas stove is supposed to be fired. This way, it will of course burn, but like a hobo stove, and not utilize the favour of the gasifying design. It is supposed to be filled with wood fuel from the bottom, up to the seccondary air inlets, and litten from top of that. It will however take a while to start, but then the hot airflow at the outlets serves with hot oxygen, and creates blue flames with minimum soots, and smoke. It will burn steadily this way until just the charcoal remains glowing. If the cooking is not completed it may however be fed carefully from above until the cooking is completed. Too much feed, and it will burn too heavily, and start to soot, and smoke. That is the intended use.
    I have tried similar devices, as well as home made stoves out of food cans, and they work very good. I would say that the "can versions" burns a bit better, but these stainless designs are more portable and supple, though they fit in eachother. Try firing it that way and compare. :) Love from a swedish old man.

      At this moment just tested some few things and compared weights. Then, I also have this kind of cooking set : www.amazon.fr/TTLIFE-Antiadh%C3%A9sive-Survie-Sets-Aluminium-Transporter/dp/B01EYF0JJS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1533461219&sr=8-1&keywords=popote+camping and what is amazing is that this stove perfectly fit in it and I can still store some stuff like solid fuell, spoon, fork, coffee and total weight is 1Kg. Another setup with a biggest cooking set make the whole up to 1.7 Kg. So, it's really amazing.

      Hi psycholoic, I have just looked at the cook set, it looks a nice piece of gear. Its always nice when things work out and the stove fits in the cook set. I was lucky that mine also fit in my msr seagull pot. When the stove is set up, it looks quite a large, heavy stove, But packed away, it is an amazing size :) I'm sure you will be as happy with it, as I am with mine. Enjoy the rest of your weekend, all the best, Mark. :)

    An issue that I've seen with this stove (actually a titanium version) on amazon was that it isn't actually titanium but aluminum. I'm not sure whether that's true or not but apparently people are having issues with the stove melting during use which certainly wouldn't happen with titanium. An issue for the steel one is that 100% of steel produced in China is contaminated with lead, given that I would try to find an alternative either made from genuine titanium, or steel sourced from another country to avoid lead exposure (especially dangerous because of exposure to high heat and open flames that would produce lead vapors, and because it would be used in food/drink preparation which would be another source of exposure.)

      can you prove what you are claiming about the lead contamination? talk is cheap.

    Try starting the stove with the larger chunks of wood in first, smaller twigs on followed by the birch bark. In other words an upside down fire. That works for me. The Solo Stove makers recommend doing it this way. I have the Solo Stove "Camp Fire" and have just ordered the smaller Tomshoo like yours. Looking forward to receiving and using it.

      Hi David, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :) Yeah when I'm using the stove for cooking then I tend to make an upside down fire in the stove. You are right about the longer burn time using it in this manner. If I am making a quick brew, then I just add a small amount of fuel and use it like a twig stove. I hope you are happy with the Tomshoo stove when it arrives :) Thanks again, all the best, Mark.

    Hi Mark, I wasn't sure at first when I saw the size of the stove but the efficiency and the fact it fitted into the pot at the end I'm sold. My dilemma... I don't have the MSR pot so a double purchase for me. Now I'm not tight but I'm probably looking at a £40 investment to replace something that already works my folding wood stove and Stanley Adventure pot. Me thinks this is an ideal Father's Day present. Cheers Sel

      Hi Sel, I hope you are keeping well mate. Defiantly make a good Father's day present, you will have to get on the case lol. I was hoping it would fit in my zebra billy pot, but no such luck. I was just lucky that it fit in the MSR pan that I already had. The dimensions are 5" X 3" when it is in the bag. So its not too big, but I do like how small the folding wood stoves fold down to. Have a great week Sel, all the best, Mark :)

      Mark Bailey sorry to be a pain mate. The pot looks like the MSR alpine 775ml. I have checked those dimensions on Amazon and they match that of the pot and stove. Really like this set up👍

      Hi Sel, I have just checked the pot and it is the alpine stove. I'm pretty sure it is the 775mI pan. I remember seeing them in go outdoors for around £18 and thinking I got ripped off as they were £25 the season before lol. Sorry for the late reply back, I fell asleep when I got in from work. Getting old lol. All the best mate, Mark. :)

    Thanks for a great video! 👍👍👍 Where did you buy the heatproof gloves and the long handled pan you are using please? I wouldn't mind adding them to my camping stove. 😁

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Donna, many thanks for watching and for the comment :) The gloves are just a pair of leather work gloves. They are lined, so they do hold a bit more heat out. Most hard wear shops will sell them or garden centres. They also come in handy when cutting wood. The pot is a 1.1 ltr MSR Alpine Stowaway pot. You can pick them up quite cheaply from Amazon or eBay. All the best, Mark :)
