Follow our three part road trip travel vlogs across the North and South Islands of New Zealand in our Campervan!
The final stop on our major travels of 2016 was 3 weeks in New Zealand; and we wanted to see literally everything! Our main agenda was to cover as much of the South Island as possible and do as many activities as we could arrange and afford! The most exciting video to come from this series will absolutely be part two, where we visited Franz Josef, and some of the lakes and national parks of New Zealand.
Remember to check out the Jelly Journeys blog to see all our photos and more information from our road trip, such as the places we stayed and our thoughts on them!

This is where I grew up :) glad you visited!
Yeah we had a great time! The stuff we did in the South Island was insane though. I can't wait to share it all once the edit is finished!
Great vid. I'm going to NZ in March next year and still working on my itinerary.
Wow, we love your videos. Keep making more. You got a lot of great shots in there ! Really fantastic video!
I am going to New Zealand in less than two years and watching this video is getting me more and more excited. It looks like a beautiful place to go and i cant wait!! What was your favorite thing about New Zealand ? and are there any tips that you would give me before i go ?
NZ is truly incredible! Literally every aspect of it, from the nature to the people was amazing! My favourite place was either Franz Josef or Queenstown. They're both small towns (compared to what I'm used to) but felt abuzz with activity and generosity!
It does look absolutely stunning from looking at your vlogs. I have heard lots about Queenstown and Franz Josef, i really hope to visit them when i am there. Thanks for the recommendation !!
I'm a fan of the GlobeTrekker series, and your vid's are on a par with those, such great video footage and editing, how you manage to blend the right music track with the vid is awesome, so enjoying watching these.
Ah awesome, I've not seen those videos - I'll check them out! Finding the right music can often take hours and sometimes literally days. I'm glad you appreciate it!
To hear just how long it can take to produce a vlog blows my mind, not that its a complaint, but that you just take it for granted, I'm guessing it gets easier over time but the general public doesn't have a scooby its just a click to view but hours to bring together keep up the great work Joe!! :)
Yeah man, it's a huge commitment, but I love the process and the creativity it provides! It does make you wonder how people can downvote something rather than just walk away from it if they don't enjoy it 😔 Not a scooby, indeed.
It does get easier, but the edit complexity and ambition of each video gets bigger as well!
Amazing! looks like you had a great time in your camper!
Thanks, your camper was awesome! - We'd love to do it all over again and see the areas we missed out on!
I missed north Island hoping im back again from cape reinga -hawks bay.❤️❤️❤️
Amazing video! Which camera are you using on the very beginning of the video? (0:39 to 1:00)?
Looks like an amazing trip! Planning a solo campervan trip next week! Much love from California!
Also I can't wait for you to explore the South Island. Incredible views and experiences at every turn 👍🏼
Yeah man it was amazing! This was all filmed back in May by the way... The first South Island video should be out this weekend, though I don't know where I'm going to find the time to edit at the moment...
This is so great. I currently live in China, however will be traveling home to New Zealand for the first time in over 2 years. Your video has given me so much inspiration for when I do my road trip around the South Island. Appreciate the content you have made, keep creating and doing cool stuff!
you will love NZ!!! enjoy! :) We will keep uploading new CHAPTERS of our trip around NZ to share our favourite places from exploring the North and South islands.
That last shot of the South made me super excited for the next video!
Knowing what we did in the South Island and having a peak through the footage already, I can tell you that the next vlog is going to be EPIC.
Amazing! And nice video.
My wishlist new zealand with campervan.. Can't wait the moment 🙏
Nice video! Hope to visit NZ one day
I'm so happy you did these videos about NZ! We are planning to go there next feb, rent a camping car and drive all around, north and south! I haven't watched part 2 and 3 yet but looking forward to it! It looks so beautiful! How was the temperature and the weather there? Do you think Feb to April is a good date? Keep it up Joe I like your videos!! Cheers
Thanks! I hope you've watched parts 2+3 by now, they're definitely the best parts! Have you checked out the epic blog post I wrote recently about how to road trip around New Zealand in a campervan? jellyjourneys.com/blog/2016/how-to-road-trip-new-zealand-campervan/
We went in May, which was coming into Winter. It was jacket and sweater weather during the day and pretty cold at night. I've heard March is the best time of the year to go, so you'll be going at a great time!
always love your work man. will be going to NZ in few months time. great info. keep up the good work!!
Great as always joe! The wanderlust is realllll😫
Thank you! Just wait until the next vlog... it's going to be SO much better! Sorry, not sorry.
Love the shot of Elly at 0:40!
Cheers, we both really enjoyed it as well, when reviewing it afterwards!
little question, do you guys book the camping sight before hand?
nice capturing of New Zealand
Great video as always, Joe! I really like how you color graded the scenery clips to make them look soft and warm. Would love to learn how to do it, if you decided to make a tutorial video in the future.
Also, looking forward for the next jelly journey episode :).
You're not the first to ask. I'm contemplating how I could do this... The next episode should be out on Saturday!
how do you find a good campervan to rent for a road trip like this?
Grrr! How can you come to New Zealand and not tell me! You also drove past our family house :D And the other day a truck fell off that ferry in some stormy weather. Right over the edge, trailer and all.
Hey that's pretty funny we drove past your house! But that's deeply worrying about the truck on the ferry. I'd heard and seen about the stormy weather in the past, but didn't tell Elly about it until after we made it across safely.
protip: go to Countdown (big grocery chain) or Warehouse (like Walmart in US) and get rubber gloves for 'emptying'!
Yeah... we kept it pretty rural, ha!
I went Japan last year it took me 17 hours by flight to get from London Heathrow to Tokyo. I wanted to find out how long will it take from London to New Zealand?
sunny19886 we gonna fly in March to New Zealand and we're flying from Vienna to Dubai ( 6 h ) and then Christchurch ( 19 hours ) so like... we have 25 hours flight 😅
Awesome video Joe! Any chance you can link me the song from the end?
Sure, it's a track from Audiosocket.com - Tontario & Leo_Islo: Coexist (Instrumental)
I absolutely loved this vlog
Cheers, I absolutely love New Zealand!
Awesome video joe :D !!!
Your vlogs give me so much inspiration that I started making vlogs of my own! :)
Thank you and keep it up!
yep, enptying the toilet cassette for the first time is always fun huh. Could have been worse I guess if you hadn't noticed the cap was still on and put it back IN. arrrrgh
Think it’s a shame you never did much in the north island.......you missed a hell of a lot....and Wellington wow you never went to Te Papa......what a shame.😩

That's sick!! Making me want to go to NZ :D
Bro, I can't believe you haven't! It's just another state in Australia, right?
Hahah yeah basically. Close enough
what camera are u using when your vlogging?
Oh. Its g7x. sorry. 😅
Cant wait for you to hit 25K
Haha thanks! So long as people are enjoying my content and sharing with others, that's all that really matters!
Dies kommt bei mir aus tiefster Seele und ist ehrlich gemeint , vielen vielen Dank für deine Antwort
MarzBar is in auckland
Other people have mentioned this guy, I don't follow his content so don't really know him. This vlog was filmed in May though and I'm now in Australia.
Oh ok you should look him up though
ahh you should've kept a meet up in NZ!! - also, whakapapa is pronounced FFFFAKAPAPA
We're moving about so much whilst we're travelling that I can't get these edits out to the quality I'd like at a fast enough pace. And whanks for the tip on Whakapapa - who'da thunk it? 😂
ah all good, hope you had fun!
damn!!! the intro music man!
Absolutely shocking parking at 5:26 :)
Ahaha! I actually made comment about the parking twice in this vlog, because our camper wouldn't fit anywhere. As I was ruthlessly making the last few cuts to keep the pace up, I got rid of the second mention of it. I forgot that I'd already cut the whole section with the first mention of it! 😂 Good spot though!
Song intro name?
Hi Joe, I'm going to NZ for 3 weeks in March, was thinking about getting a camper van versus hotels or hostels across both islands, would you tend to save money taking renting a campervan?
Difficult to gauge - especially in March (peak season). As a guide, our large camper was about £750 for 3 weeks in May, but in peak it could be about 3x as much. The campsites with power ranged from about £7-£20 for the night but you can read into freedom camping as well if you want free nights. Your best bet is to calculate it all up and then compare it to a car hire with hostels/hotels. I actually did a whole blog post about how to road trip New Zealand that may be of interest to you jellyjourneys.com/blog/2016/how-to-road-trip-new-zealand-campervan/
In new zealand I believe the short answer is YES, it is cheaper in a campervan, and even if they were to be about the same price the convenience of the camper is the winner. You are not set to itineraries like with hotel and hostel bookings where you have to turn up on the date you booked 3 months ago. Things change when you get there. Enjoy some freedom whilst you're there and don't stick to timetables
nice
Cheers! Any particular parts stand out for you?
Ich Wünsche euch von Herzen nur das allerbeste und Gute . Gott schütze euer Land und Bewahrt euch eure Kultur und Natur
Danke vielmals!
Joe Allam das kommt von tiefstem Herzen
I'm all kinds of speechless!
And I've got all kinds of thanks! ☺️
Wh is pronounced like f
Whanks! I keep hearing this in the comments below - I never saw it coming, ha!
euer Land ist das schönste und gebt bitte darauf acht , hütet es wie einen wertvollen Schat . hier ist das Parsdis auf Erden
Really well made, but it all kind of feels like you are traveling and camping for the sake of posting it on social media. You could do a bit less vlogging and talking and more cinematics like at the beginning.
There's a high quality piece of film coming real soon from each of the countries we've visited this year-the sequences in these vlogs are teasers for the high quality pieces to come. The vlogs and films are all secondary to the main aspect of travelling and there's a lot in these vlogs that isn't shown, so we're definitely not doing things for the sake of it.
Joe Allam
That's good to hear. I will keep an eye out for the upcoming content :)
first loved it Joe!
Thanks for being quick! Did you have a favourite part in the vlog?
+Joe Allam chilling intro
FLY EMIRATES, HELLO TOMORROW
Lol did you know there is a super famous nz rugby League player his real name is Manu and his nickname is the beast lol coincidence
Awesome video! But it's pronounced 'fuckapapa' 😂
Whank you! I keep hearing about it in these comments, ha! I did overhear something whilst we were there that caught me off guard, but I didn't hear it 100% to confirm it haha! 😂
when tourists come in winter XD
Ha! We purposely wanted autumn for the colours of the nature, but also because it's so much quieter and therefore about 1/3 the cost for all camping related things.
Didn’t show anything good. Just you driving and talking. Except for 5 seconds of hot water beach. You flew through north island to quick.
Would stay and watch your videos but all we see is your face all the time and not enough of New Zealand.
wear gloves when you deal with shit bro
boooooooooooring
first loved it Joe!
