the music when hawke straightens his posture while kneeled and how it comes in is some of the most beautiful i've ever heard
It’s incredible - the score in the is movie is so gorgeous and sometimes I’ll just think about it
Yes, i love that part too!
Literally half the reason I come back for this scene
The score "Strike Brother" is such a somber yet triumphant piece of music
I loved everything about this masterpiece, especially Hawke's final moments. Everything he told his brother came to pass and he went out like a true warrior king.
His son became Conan.
@@thebuddhaofknowledgemichae2486or hamlet whatever you prefer
@@thebuddhaofknowledgemichae2486Amleth is way more ancient than Conan. It is real world lore. More like "Conan became like Amleth".
He went out with a kingdom in ruins, a desiccated marriage, and a son cursed with a doomed destiny. While the belief in Valhalla is a salve for these truths, the ones left on earth suffer because of the frozen walls these kings erected. The story is a tragedy, the actors did such a good job with the dramatic romance of the folly.
true warrior rapist king, sure
When your plot to kill your brother succeeds and he's *still unimpressed*
Actually, it was Queen Gunrun who seduced Fjolnir into killing King Aurvandil.
@@BillyRunsShow doesnt matter, he still had the desire and ego to do so. She just pushed him further.
@@Aidar77
Lol
And the "swift" strike takes 3 attempts to decapitate
Best part about this scene besides the writing is the use of its score. The vocals coming in at 2:10 are goosebump-inducing every time
Absolutely. Must have watched it a hundred times and it still gets me!
Let this misdeed haunt your living nights! After that music is 😍😍
I lament everyone’s loss who did not get the chance to see this gem in theaters. This movie deserves a rerelease to theaters. Criminal how poorly this movie did at the box office.
Right
Never saw it, but Just bought the 4k bluray for my sweet 4k tv and sweet surround sound. Cant wait next week to see it
@@user-bj1mx2ip1c enjoy it my friend. This movie is an experience.
@Jeff Allgood the reason the woke hate those people..my people..is they are a problem for globalist tyrants and their low IQs. Western European men are the light, inteligence, and strength in this world.
@Jeff Allgood what an a ss....they only invented every major positive ideology, technology, and most equally and equitable prosperous way of life ever yet seen on Earth.
This scene was incredibly beautiful. The music made King Aurvandil's death seem so noble and his death speech so weighty and prophetic
Took that death like a man and cursed his enemy to a horrible doom
Seeing this in the context of the rest of the story makes the confrontation between Fjolnir and Aurvandil all the more tragic.
Fjolnir legitimately did it for love. This movie is so amazing.
@@OutrageIsNow but still he killed his brother and tried to kill his nephew
It is refreshing to hear well written characters and dialogue.
Man I was serioiusly SHOCKED when I found out it was Ethan Hawke who played the king. What an utterly impeccable actor. I've never seen him play such a brutal and animalistic role and he absolutely owned it.
Fjolnir had other guys fight his nephew and his brother, in both cases he didn't dare fight them alone. Not long after Fjolnir took over the kingdom, he fled like a coward when someone else came along, while his brother and nephew both stood their ground against overwhelming odds.
Both Aurvandil and Amleth went to Valhalla, while Fjolnir went to Helheim along with Gudrun, more specifically the Nastrond part of Helheim
Why is that guy wearing an Anglo Saxon helmet?
@@seanemery1917 Fjolnir and Gudrun both died in honor, slain by steel.
@@srottfaen They commited treason, kinslaying, adultery and murder. Attempted kinslaying for Gudrun
@@razakid1993 probably a bringback from a raid, or maybe he bought it.
Fjolnir's entire outfit here is super luxurious by the standards of the time, from the cloak which was a regional specialty native to Iceland, the full lamellar armor, and the decorated sword. He probably put himself into severe debt acquiring the whole setup, which could help explain how he loses the kingdom so easily after taking over.
What faith. "To Valhall!"
The hidden treasure that I don’t see a lot of people talking about is how his brother says “how swiftly he swings his sword” it’s gruesome but you can tell it takes a couple blows to cut off the Kings head but it took one truly swift strike for Amleth to cut off his uncles head at the end
And only after Aurvandil tells him 4 times to do so. Not very swift at all. He didn't want to kill Aurvandil, he only did it because Guðrún begged him to. His heart wasn't in it.
Fjölnir is a coward who killed for a mad slave-made-queen and couldnt even hold onto his new Kingdom and didnt die defending it like a true drengr would. He failed to protect his family from Amleth. He fought an already weakened Amleth and still lost. By Old Norse standards he was a disgrace. At least he died in battle.
@@liamgibson8602 He may have died in battle, but he did things that offended the Norse pantheon, so he's going to Helheim in the end, and that part of Helheim is known as Nastrond
@@seanemery1917even if he did make it to Valhalla he’d be sharing the kiddy table with the toddlers
@@def3ndr887 Naw, even the kids would hate his guts
When Ethan hawke straightens himself up and takes a deep breath as if he’s ready for the end is just gangster. Sat there with multiple arrows sticking outa him
That music change as he rises slightly is incredible
For those who don’t know, the sword fijolnr is using isn’t a scimitar but a Nordic one sided sword, mostly found in Norway
What's it's name do you know? I knew Eggers is very diligent with research and would've obviously used a real representation of Norse weaponry but I haven't been able to find anything on it (I wish to include it in something I'm writing as a sword used by a character I'm developing)
@ it’s unknown what the Norse called them, it’s just called one sided Viking sword.
It's the complexity of these morally-gray characters that make these scenes have so much weight and substance. I love this movie.
It’s what I love about a lot of mythic medieval literature - the characters aren’t what we see today but they still have motivations, emotions, vengeance, love, hate etc. I love the magical realism and wish this film had sparked some more films of its calibre. I’d kill to see a high budget Welsh Mabinogi film.
like how the horses spook when he yells STRIKE!
Love this he cursed him.and was right about his kingdom not lasting
Curious why not a lot of people are talking about this movies score. It’s absolutely amazing
The score for this film is genuinely stunning
"Now behold how swiftly your brother swings his sword" proceeds to pause, point his sword forward and allows him to give the most epic long winded death speech in history. Truly the swiftest
Yup, never let em finish the curse
"Come for your carcass..?, You Mongrel's" 🤣
Not a cellphone in sight. Just people living in the moment.
What a beautiful times 🤣
This movie was excellent in theaters. I’m sad it didn’t do well.
Never even heard of this movie somehow
Its trash wtf. So many movies are underrated and so many overrated but the peoplebthatbshow uobay theaters decide. Before this time, blockbuster literally blew the games balls apart by letting people see movies in DVD after they came out. Nowadays things are much much different
@@bigpimpen045 why was it trash?
@@M1XEDBAG The cinematography and score were good but the story was weird and slow paced.
@@firingallcylinders2949 I don’t think it was too slow paced. It took its time to set up scenes but they were satisfying scenes. The one thing that could have been handled better was the weaving of the fantastical Norse mythology with the grounded realistic story being told. It was an ambitious project. It was capped off well at the end though.
Handsome Hawke never seems to miss.
I missed it in cinema as it was only played for a week in one place, bloody shame. Had to rent as soon as it was available on prime. Absolute masterpiece and great plot.
Man, the dialog in this film!!!
Then Harald of Norway come and take his kingdom. He killed his brother for nothing.
That and he's a coward
I think it awesome how they play prophecies and mysticism in this movie. Evertything the king said came to past, and not olny Amleth honored his fafher, but he saved his sons and went to Valhala like s true warrior.
Love this film. Eggers has killed it with all three of his major films.
How i wish someone would throw Robert Eggers a copious amount of money so he could make a Children of Hurin movie, Hurin's last stand would be amazing.
People didn't appreciate this movie enough. Seriously.
freaking masterpiece. TO VALHÖLL !!!
It’s jarringly unusual to someone who hasn’t seen The Witch yet.
I genuinely think it’s a truly GREAT film.
So underated
2:30 I love how the horses raise their heads ( in amazement ) when Ethan Hawke screams "strike"
2:10 once I saw this scene in the Theater i can’t tell you how pumped up I was
His voice! Goosebumps!
love the dialogue, very Shakespearean
If this movie feels familiar (some people say Conan but I don't see it) it's because it's the original basis for the story of Hamlet, to the point that the Main character's name is an amalgamation of Hamlet (A M L E T H; move the -H- before the A). It's also the same plot as Lion King.
Very true except Hamlet was actualy based on the saga of Amleth, that's where Shakespeare got it from lol
@@ljharris5823 that's... literally what he said dude.
@Mario-us7ds yep I have a habit of reiterating things when I'm drunk 🥴
Anyone else LOVE the music during this scene??
Absolutely!
this Movie was too good. I guarantee 10 years from now, people will lament and say this was a masterpiece ahead of it's time, and it will become a cult classic, but alas great art is not often appreciated when it is first displayed.
Such a great movie.
Imo the writing was iconic. So many great lines.
Imo the writing was iconic. So many great lines.
The writers for this movie deserve every award
Ethan Hawke was so good in this one. This and Black phone prove that he is one of the Great ones
You should not let the dying man speak unless you want him to say something dangerous and ominous.
My brother and I saw this movie like three times theaters, it was almost perfect. Definitely one of the best things I’d seen in a theater in years…besides the Lighthouse lol
Love this scene. Its absolutely perfect. Shakespeare in movie-form. And how scary the figure at 1:04 looks! A scene inspired by Conan the Barbarian, by the way. Tulsa Doom taking off his helmet in front of Conan and his mother.
2:06 “Your kingdom will not last, let this misdeed haunt your living nights til a flaming vengeance gorges on your death” What a powerful and boss way to go out
"Soaked in my blood, it will soon be sliding off your arm like a serpent." -- The fight at the gates of Hel, the sword does indeed slide off his arm to honor the true king's revenge.
And his strike is not swift as he swang his sword....
See how swiftly your brother swings his sword. Takes three tries to decapitate him. Then he eventually gets insta decapped. Attention to detail.
Ethan hawke character was not afraid of dying
The characters name is Aurvandil
Because he was already dying from an infected wound.
He refused to die a shameful graybeard.
@@evillink1 no it’s because he’s a Viking. Viking warriors viewed death the same way as the Spartans.
@@OutrageIsNow Spartan warriors also rationalized things lol
Ethan hawke slays this role dang
I love how he chose to die with honor instead of plead for mercy like a true warrior of Odin
Haunting last words.
I love this 😀 movie 🎬 it was great 😅😊
this movie put the 7 years of vikings TV show to shame
Greatest movie ever
Hard to believe Ethan Hawke was once a Romcom/Teen Idol. I barely recognized him in an older movie, not least of all because, to me, he’s always been the versatile actor he is now.
Loved this movie.
Can someone tell me what beautiful dry stringed instrument they are using for the music here? The one that starts out with a high note then slides down to a lower note from about 2:10 to 2:12?
maybe a Tagelharpa or some Lyre
@@Azrakul-t7i I believe it's a Tagelharpa. I've never heard of this instrument before so I went and looked it up. It definitely has that very dry sound I'm looking to reproduce. Thanks for the input!
That armor is so dope
Truly proof that Ethan Hawke isn’t the lucky guy who made it through the cracks, but a gifted and talented actor worthy of his art.
The dog masks were an awesome touch.
LOVED LOVED LOVED this movie!!!!!
Ethan Hawke is underrated. The man is a fine actor he plays in Magnificent 7.
A character that went through more pain than Ellie
0:02 That's the biggest arrow I've ever seen.
He completely lost his head!
King’s bodyguards? You are fired.
He'd dismissed them because of the mystery ceremony he was attending with his son is my guess.
A fatal miscalculation.
i liked this scene but its objectively funny that in movies, the stealth arrow from a *HORSE RIDER* is a thing and because we are used to background noise in our modern lives no really notices how insanely loud this would be in a forest
It's a betrayal - he probably heard the horse but didn't expect one of his own men to shoot him
the death of thors from Vinland Saga appeared
Fjolnir: "Long live the king!
I love the accent in Fjolnir
STRIKE! Valhol awaits!
Movie had a pretty good twist. Predicable, but I enjoyed it
This Viking movie is more of a story within the confines of their own world, a modern rendition of Beowulf in some sense.
However the History channel series Vikings fixates on the height of the Viking age which was prior to this movie, 793 AD to 873 AD in the entirety of the series. It was a long saga about pioneering travel to discovering new peoples and new cultures and then fighting them, only to assimilate with them.
It’s a modern rendition of an old danish story. You may have heard of one adaption; Hamlet (Amleth with the H at the start)
Absolute cinema
The boy would've been killed immediately in real life. They never let children live intentionally to prevent vengeance.
Their priority was the king, they needed to seat Fjolnir. A runaway prince is nothing to scoff at but had it been the other way around and the king were to escape, it would be over for Fjolnir.
Man this scene hits sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo hard...chillllsssss 😬😬urghhhh love this kinda stuff, always did..the same with the ending where his son dies..😬😬hits deeeeep
¡¡To Valholl!!
It's ok fjolnir you only needed several of your men to take you brother the war raven down before you even got close to him.
what it felt like as a kid when ur sibling betrayed you
That is so true
" TOO VALHOL" brings straight chills everytime
All that power and still he had to swing 3x's
Overthrow your brother to become King, only to lose it offscreen to the Hero of Another Story
I see this as a role reversal of when the super hero finally catches the villian up until the close up of Ethan Hawke as he curses his brother and tells him to strike, unwavering, and full of retribution.

Viking Mufasa is pretty cool
This is the same thing as the beginning of Conan…
Big inspiration, right down to the undead fight.
As revisionist historical fiction goes, this is the king!
Es MUUUUy buena
1:44 no noise when he unsheathed his blade?
Real swords don’t make a ringing sound when drawn unless there is a metal collar on the scabbard (more common in later periods of history).
I liked everything except the ending. Why do these movies always have to end with the protagonist dying. its so cliche...
Because that's how the story ends, the point is he was destined to die, but he had to choose whether to die to protect the ones he loved, or die to reap vengeance on his enemies, in the end he chose both
Super
In the end I realized that true heroes of the movie is traitors
