FREEZING Solo Winter Wild Camp on Englands Highest Mountain - Scafell Pike

- Lake District Wild Camping. Scafell Pike mountain camp in my Hilleberg Soulo - one week before the Coronavirus restrictions kicked in I was fortunate enough to get into the mountains and spend the night near Mickledore, a narrow ridge at 2755ft, between the summits of Scafell and Scafell Pike. A 3hr drive for me to reach Wasdale in the Lake District on a beautiful late winters day. I set off from Wasdale Head with a 15kg backpack for the climb up Brown Tongue and on to Mickledore with a short scramble to the summit. Tent pitching options are quite limited on the Scafell range due to its extremely rocky nature, but I had spotted a reasonably flat pitch on a previous walk in the area. A freezing but beautiful night all to myself pitched up at 2900ft in my Hilleberg Soulo. The morning after I packed up and headed for the summit of Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England at 3210ft. My return route to Wasdale was first heading north via the Corridor route, before turning west below the massive bulk of Great Gable and Great Napes. An 11 mile walk with 4000ft of ascent. and another amazing solo adventure in the mountains.

What I really like about this film is although you discuss your kit you don’t “bang on” about the kit. Far too many you tubers seem to spend too much time reviewing kit when in reality it’s about getting out there and enjoying our hills. Great work pal, keep it up. 👍
Thank you. Totally agree with that 👍. Some folks seem to be obsessed with collecting kit. The way I see it is it’s just more junk to haul up a mountain. Hence the reference to my “lightweight table” in my recent videos 😁

Very nice, I spent a few days camped near you and climbing with a mate on Scafell Pike, scrambles and easy routes up to about Severe. It is possible to be completely alone on Scafell Pike and Scafell, by just being a little off the beaten track.
Your video made me very homesick for the Lakes during this latest lockdown when we can't go anywhere or do anything.

Just watched this and I must admit I go on winter camps with a hot water bottle. Although I have a smaller version of yours from Aliexpress. Well worth the extra few grams in the pack, in fact there are plenty of extra grams that are well worth it in winter conditions. Nothing worse than a broken nights sleep from being cold.
Definitely worth the weight Choccy. I’d rather sacrifice other stuff 👍 I rarely sleep but need to be warm

Thanks Murray. My first videos were just edited on my phone so quite basic. I’m using my pc for the more recent ones and adding some music. I’ve also added a bit of commentary to the latest ones. Still very much a beginner but enjoying the journey. I don’t think the sun has stopped shining since the start of the lockdown. Crazy, but you’ve just got to laugh or you’d drive yourself mad with it all. Priority is to stay healthy so we’re ready when things improve 👍

Hay man, great vid! Don't know if you know but at 3:18 that grey strap by your ear is what osprey call a "load lifter". If you pull it tight it will curve the pack onto the top of your back and help spread the load a little better, plus it stops the pack from swaying and feeling like it's pulling you backwards! Which is handy when going up some steep stuff like you did 👊🏻.

Always remember, coming back from Canada in the early seventies, myself and the wife climbing Bowfell in the early morning, and greeting the Britons coming up the trail, as we were descending, asking if we had finished the climb, yes the Dungeon Gill was open for lunch..we said...

Hi Ben. I decided I wanted to go solo winter camping in the mountains back in 2016, having never done any wild camping before. I specifically chose red as I thought it would be easier to locate in an emergency, if I needed help. It was really as simple as that. HTH Dave

I’m quite new to this TH-cam malarkey, Jonathan, so still lots to learn. I did a coastal camp at the Mull of Galloway last year. There’s a very basic video on my channel. I enjoyed it for a change but do prefer the mountains tho. Hopefully we’ll be out there again soon 👍

It’s twelve months since I was up there but it seems like an eternity. You were so lucky to have such fine weather. I liked the video footage it’s very professional looking.
