SURVIVING 16hrs alone on a Mountain in My FREEZING TENT - Solo WINTER CAMPING in the Lake District

  • Solo winter mountain camp in my Hilleberg Allak.
After being unwell and not being out for 4 weeks I decided to get out for a night in the mountains in my new tent, the Hilleberg Allak 2. A relatively short hike from the car park brought me to the summit of Robinson at just over 2400ft. Freezing temperatures saw some snow in the night but the skies eventually cleared and made for a beautiful morning in the mountains. A 6 mile (9.6km) walk with 1800ft (548m) of ascent.
Many thanks for watching - Dave

You’re 100% definitely not alone Dave. You may live in a house on your own but you have us, and we have you. We’re not virtual friends; we are real people and we love being part of what you do. Christmas is over hyped and is only one day anyway, so don’t let that spoil a good chance to get out there while it’s beautiful and peaceful. Stay safe pal and keep your sense of humour alive and kicking. We’re all around you. ✊

Aww, lovely post Tim. I'm not alone, I'm lucky enough to have a wonderful husband and family around me but I totally agree with what you say about us all being there for Dave. I love his videos of his mountain camps and live vicariously through them as I'm not sure I'll ever achieve one. Dave, you have a family here on TH-cam and Instagram and don't ever forget that. Stay strong lovely. xx

Dave, my fellow kindred spirit, remember, you are never alone. I'm 74, have 4 children, 5 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren (and a wife who has gone on that long tramp to beyond the sunset) I get to see them from time to time, but they are all busy leading their own lives. I am up in the mountains doing my own thing, so being alone can have a different meaning depending on one's view. I am just happy that I can still carry a heavy pack and fit enough to climb the mountains. You are doing the right thing in going into the mountains, they will keep you sane, and when the rest of your Neighbours are stressing out on how to pay the Christmas bills you will be in your tent relaxing with a smile on your face, I have had a lifetime in the hills (as an instructor and guide) and have never felt lonely. This year alone I have done 63 tramps and 40 of them solo. Believe me, you will never ever regret going into the hills. They saved me. ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ 😀😀

Good to see you back out again Dave, another good un..👍🏻
I’m still waiting to do my snow camp, hopefully I’ll tick mine off in January!
I’m totally with you there, I’d much rather be at the top of a hill/mountain than in the shops at this time of year!..
That new tent is like a palace inside, although not sure I’d choose to lug up that kind of weight up there like you did, personally. 😬
Glad to hear your keeping your Soloist though, still really enjoy being out in mine..
I have brought myself a new tent (a Helm Compact 1) recently, for this time of year and spending 16hrs in during the night, still only a smallish 1-man shelter - but with more overall headroom, which really makes a difference spending these long cold nights inside.

Great video, thanks for all your videos, I'm just catching up so hope to watch the newer ones in the next few days. Lovely views, particularly in the morning which were just stunning! I don't disagree about Christmas, apart from anything else, I really don't like all the hype that goes with it. I've just got a thermarest chair kit, hope to try it out soon. I've tried it in the living room with my exped mat. Rather than fold over the seat section, I let the mat hang out of the end, seemed to work well and very comfy. I find my Soulo really snug in winter, did you find the larger tent space in the Allak colder? Hi hope you don't minde asking a question. I'm thinking of pulling the trigger and buying at hilleberg tent. Mostly for mountain use in pretty high winds. Do you think the red label tents are adequate. Hard to find the black label ones and extra weight and cost. Thanks.

    • @TheSoloSummiteer
      @TheSoloSummiteer  ปีที่แล้ว

Both my Hilleberg tents are RL. For the stuff I do I’m sure they are fine and I’ve been out in some pretty bad weather in my Soulo. Check out some of my videos and you will see it in 40mph winds in winter. I’m not a storm chaser and if the weather’s really bad I’d rather be at home; nothing to see. HTH 👍

HI Dave, thought i would just send message on here ,as not sure if the Instagram one i sent ,has sent! if you see what i mean ,if it did then that's ok ,as i said in message i'm hopeless with these things ! Just wanted to share a couple of things to maybe pass some time over this Christmas period ,although i'm sure you have plenty of things to listen too etc and occupy your time. I watched a fascinating you tube video recently by a young man 18 years old i think in Sweden ,who went off grid and completely built a log cabin from nothing ,just using hand tools and making everything himself down to the nails, His name is Erik Grankvist ,I have never seen anything like it once you start watching him you wont stop until its finished! Its just incredible ,anyway much more interesting than the usual stuff on TV😣.I know you like your dance music , so not sure if you would like this band ? but i discovered them during lock down and your video's and their music saved my sanity! . The band is called Haevn and their music is phenomenal ,they are from the Netherlands ,music is all a personal taste but definitely some of the best have ever listened too , i think they are very under rated , bit like London Grammar , the close up concert versions of songs are fantastic , couple of personal favourites We are , has the most amazing Saxaphone bit at the end , being up a mountain and looking at the stars listening to that would be like being in heaven! or Haevn!. Finding out more and the sea , oh and Where the heart is, are also amazing but to be honest every track is just amazing ! So just thought you might like to check them out , love discovering new music, music has got me through many a difficult time.I won't say Happy Christmas as i know its an awful time for lots of people i've had may an awful Christmas ,so i will just say i hope you have a peaceful Christmas ,as peaceful as possible anyway ,and i might try again on Instagram ,but f not il keep in touch on here. Kindest regards Jane

Alreet again pal just catching up on a couple of your vids haha...
Love the frost sitting on top of Grasmoor that looked cool.
Robinson and a few round the area are actually on my list of near future summits to do next time I'm in the Lakes so this was awesome to see 👌🏻 some great views up there.
Definitely couldn't complain about that pitch pal had superb views and saw you had the Alak on Insa was wondering on your thoughts..
Bet its great for winter camps, I was in my Soulo 2 nights ago for about 14 hours and after a bit I was going nuts waiting for the sunrise this time of year 🤣🤣 Although I love my Soulo too and never lets me down.
I had my Montane Prism down boots the other night too they always keep my feet toasty in the sub zero temps 👌🏻
Man such amazing views for your brew 😍😍
Your channel is one of my absolutely favourites on here mate 100% Your videos are superb, you're such an awesome guy and I hope we finally get to have that camp in this year. Last year was a bit of a weird one for me for multiple reasons but feel confident I'm 'back on it' now 😊🙏🏼

It doesn't get much better than that, does it?! Fantastic video, Dave and incredible drone footage even before the cloud cleared to reveal that astonishing vista. Glad you stuck around for it! And you're so right about the wind making a heck of a difference - it can make or break a walk, let alone a camp. I did laugh though, only you could say I'm doing an easy one while standing in front of a hillside steeper than 45 degrees! Sorry to hear you've been poorly and I know what you mean about Xmas. Even with a family it often doesn't mean anything. We treat it like a normal day. To me, you decide what days are special, not just because it's a date in the diary. I like your idea of doing lower ones in winter with the full kit - I'm sure you'll discover some cracking spots and hills, even if they're not that high. Try Castle Crag in Borrowdale - one of the smallest but on a clear winter's day, the views are amazing. There's lots to choose from and some will be new ground... and no doubt a few to bag, not that you're a bagger of course! Best wishes for next year and look forward to lots of videos.

Just caught up with this superb video Dave, I tend to save them for a few days before watching. Robinson means a lot to me as it was a walk I did 3 years ago after new neighbours moved in and they were a nightmare, I escaped for the day and walked Robinson, Dale Head and back down following Newlands river to Little Town. Fortunately we moved to Norfolk 2 years ago, though it's a bit far from the lakes. By the way, I know you're into waterfalls like me, there's a superb one on the Newlands river from Dale Head tarn if you ever descend that way in the future, you won't be disappointed.

Hi Dave. 3.3kg doesn’t feel heavy when it’s pitched and you are sitting in a virtual palace for 14 hours lol. Worth every gram in winter! I also have the trekker chair. It’s a great little bit of luxury and comfort to use on longer nights. Only one thing I have noticed is the back panel struts do push very hard downwards when you are leaning back on it. So be careful in soft ground in particular as it can really dig into the tent floor. I normally through someone under it to spread the load just to be safe! Cheers mate and a belated happy Christmas.
