He is so much better than what the results show. Proper old fashioned racing driver, knows his F1 history and doesn’t bog down in a fight. Sad to see him leave this sport.
No he isn't ... "Old fashioned racing driver" is a funny way of saying overaggressive and rule breaking (remind you of anyone? 🦁🇳🇱). He was a solid midfielder and nothing more. I don't wish to criticise him because the level in F1 is very high and he was more than competent and on his day very very good, but please let's stop this revisionism.
I was about to get in here and drag The Race for doing what every other F1 media outlet does and judge a solid driver by the numbers alone. Glad to see someone else beat me, even with only 25 comments on the board. He's a solid dude and, as a driver, seems to thrive in the proverbial "street fights". F1's loss, sportscar racing's gain.
After his brief McLaren stint he wasn't considered again for any other major team. While I think that he's indeed brave, that should tell you something. Hulk didn't have much of a problem beating him twice.
KMag is the Nordic Jean Alesi. A perennial fighter who always drove his guts out, was all heart, and never backed down from a squabble. Guys like these are loved because they embody the spirit of racing at its core.
Definitely agree there. And as a fan, this kind of driver is one of the most exciting to watch. In K. Mag's case though, his racing skill and/or car just couldn't keep up with his racing/competitive spirit and his ultimate results show that but we definitely need more drivers like him who will fight just as hard for position 15 as they would for a top 5.
@ His skills could _absolutely_ cash the checks his attitude wrote. TF is this? People like you probably said similar things about Sainz before he went to Ferrari, and look how well that run turned out.
Hulkenberg has never got a podium, but by his consistency as 38 year you can still see his better, than Magnussen is. Even Stroll got a podium before, but nobody thinks that highly of him. Sometimes getting a podium or even a race win comes down to luck, so it dosent mean they are that much better, than drivers without a podium, but it also depends on how good car you are given to drive.
@ getting good car is about your manager's skills these days ;) yes, Hulk is on average definitely better than Stroll and probably better than KMag, but he's got no F1 silverware on his shelf... Stirling Moss might have been best driver of his time, but these days he's remembered for not having won the title - as Hulk is atm best known for not making it to the podium although he raced in lot of races (when sorted by number of races the next guy who didn't make it to podium is Sutil with 100 less starts; also he is driver with most starts who hasn't won a race yet) ...
Kmag's final battle with Albon ending with "fuck off" after he finally managed to get past was well earned and hilarious. As much as I love Albon, that was a beautiful way to end his career. Godspeed Kmag.
I think Kevin will always be remembered as one of the last "old school" f1 drivers, someone who drives very aggresively, does what he can for the team and never cares about being penalized if it means a better result. It's a shame he never got a podium worthy car outside of 2014 but that's how it goes in F1
I'm old school enough to remember when drivers didn't get try to get penalties. He's more of a new school driver who was overly aggressive in relation to his level of talent, stuck around much longer than his career results should warrant, and even where having a known name matters more than said results.
He lasted as long as he did because a solid, decently quick midfield driver is someone who will usually not have too much difficulty finding a berth in F1. That's why Hulkenberg is still there too, and why Perez had such a lengthy career prior to him self-destructing in 2024. A known quantity, a safe pair of hands, call it what you will teams will always be interested in drivers like that. Not everyone can be a Fangio or Senna or Schumacher or Hamilton or Verstappen. As the video points out, only 34 drivers have ever won the World Championship so it's not really a realistic expectation to put on any driver. K-Mag parlayed a decent amount of talent into a decade-long career with some very good highs, and I think that's a great way for him to bow out and be remembered.
Haas saved his career. Haas saved Grosjean's career. Haas saved Hulkenberg's career. Now it might save Ocon's career as well. Haas really is a dog shelter of F1, safe heaven for rejected drivers. Not so much for rookies, though, so best luck to Ollie.
@@reecerox2 Mick beat him over the whole season but to you brainless idjits rookie not instantly constantly against veteran with 20x more experience is bad, eh?
Beautifully composed. I started watching F1 regularly in '22, the exact year he got his 2nd ressurection, and boy that Bahrain performance was a mega viking comeback!
That single podium is only notable in relation to his last teammate, the best underachiever in history. Otherwise, over half of the drivers on the 2024 grid had a win, and he'd been there longer than most of those drivers. It's almost an achievement on Magunussen's part to retire with so little to show for it in this era.
I will miss Kmag on the grid. He was a proper race car driver of the kind we don't see often in F1 anymore. Some might argue that's a good thing, but since F1 is ultimately for entertainment, Kmag fit the bill.
he is one of the biggest what ifs stellar junior career even his rookie season was decent had his rookie season been completed this year he would have been held to the same regard as someone like oscar piastri
I think K Mag just got the bad luck. Maybe his aggressive driving style didn't agree with the "save your tire" decade... Anyways, he was always great for an honest comment. Love K dawg!!
One of the more entertaining drivers in F1. Brilliant in lap 1, furious in wheel-to-wheel, and sometimes across the line in his aggressiveness. You've got to love that. F1 will miss him.
K-Mag, probably the last old-school driver we had on the grid. Always pedal to the metal and elbows out. Also, extra credit for fok smashing Guenther’s door.
Magnussen McLaren career was mainly hurt by in-house fighting and I think he would have done better without the politics in his ear especially as he was a rookie.
One other thing that did him in is he kinda got caught up in the turnover of new drivers when he got back into f1 in 2016 max Carlos ocon lance gasly Hartley all kinda over shadowed his performance while taking seats he could have tried to negotiate to but instead had to stay with haas
Ultimately, KMag is a fun driver to watch most of the time, and provided some great battle over the course. For a fan, that's really all you need to decide he is good.
Magnussen was unlucky with McLaren being on a true downward spiral where Vandoorne was even more unlucky. When the car was at his likings he could deliver some good results, also qualifying wise. Like Austria a few years back where he truly put in a good lap in Q3 and also Interlagos, okay he was lucky with the timing but the lap was impressive enough. One thing I will miss him for in F1 is his fighting spirit and no bullshit attitude.
Shame it didn't work, same like his father who was even praised by Michael Schumacher in his junior career. But once in the Stewart in 1998, nothing seems to click. But just like Jan, i'm sure he'll find more success in other categories of Motorsport
I liked him, whilst he wasnt a Verstappen or Hamilton level driver, his agression often gave entertaining fights on screen. I hope he continues to race in some form.
imagine how hyped up magnussen would be if he scored a podium on debut today. people already overglaze piastri and i wouldn't believe how crazy and unjustified hype train would be for magnussen.
2014 australian gp was one of many false dawns mclaren had from 2013-22, after that race I genuinely thought mclaren were back. Little did I know that would be the last time a mclaren driver is on podium for 5 yrs and how bad it would get....
Enemy of the FIA since day one and never got the respect he deserved. Was beating both Red Bulls on merit until the infamous Haas pit stop in AUS 2018. And interesting to hear what he said about performance operating window in the current gen of cars; we certainly saw Hamilton suffer from the same issue. Can't wait to see what he does in other series.

It wasn't a false dawn. It just didn't suit him. He was never meant to be a podium queen. Everything about him was mid-field. Not because he wasn't good but because his prime motivation was to race wheel to wheel, to never concede and to always attack. It's not possible to live like that at the front so he lived in the middle where he could be himself. He'll be sadly missed cos he had the right stuff.
K-Mag was maybe lucky enough to get that podium as McLaren was in a downward spiral. Looking back it was better that he didn't drove for McLaren in 2015 because he would spend most of the time retiring the car with engine issues. 😅 Too bad he never got a shot at a big team that was actually good. 😕
