Hey there, I hope this helps: 01:09 The security guy was asking just to check the bag and often you can leave it in a designated place at the entryway and get it back once you're done paying. It's a common policy in many supermarkets around the world. 2:34 Harissa is spicy 🌶️ paste used for cooking and making sandwiches. The canned Harissa is mostly for sandwiches (mix it with mayo and you'll get the best combo 😋) while for cooking people use a handmade harissa that is very fragrant and has some spices in it. You can manage the quantity according to your taste. Even if the food doesn't taste that spicy there is still Harissa in it. it's basically Tunisian blood 😂 3:48 That's canned jam. it's a very very old brand. Today there are many other options but that one is still nostalgic (also cheaper) It's good tho 👍 5:03 As for the flour and sugar, just like a good part of the world, there is currently an economical crisis worsened by the Russia-Ukrain situation. Flour and Sugar are "basic needs" in Tunisia which means that the prices are fixed (the government pays the difference in cost). Whenever there is a political or economical crisis people have tendencies to hoard. So to prevent that from happening (especially any shady black market thing), some regulations are imposed. This way everyone gets access to the product. 2 packs per cart, that's 2kg. No one needs 2kg per day. So it just makes it hard for those who want to make profit out of people's misery. 6:55 That's Lokum, originally an Ottoman Turkish delight. It's a traditional sweet that comes in many flavours. It was first brought to Tunisia many centuries ago with the Turkish occupation and became a tradition ever since. Tunisians call it Halkoum (it's locally made). 8:51 True ! Tunisia is still quite organic, you can buy anything in bulk and fruits and veggies come straight from the farms (no pre-prossessing) 12:09 That's to make ice-cream at home. Usually all you have to add is milk, give it a good wisk then let it rest in the freezer for a while. That gets you a lot. 14:37 In Ramadan people don't shop all day long so the big supermarkets recharge their aisles according to that. People usually buy in bulk and store everything in the freezer so they don't have to shop on a daily basis. Also Tunisians are very particular about their bread. They buy their bread fresh out of the oven so if stores make bread hours before sunset, it'll get cold and no one would buy it later. What to do ? Buy your bread the day before, keep it in a plastic bag (so it doesn't get dry and hard) and just heat it a little if you wish the next day. Tunisian bread has no additives so it has to be consumed within ~2 days (unless kept in the freezer) I hope you have a good time in Tunisia and happy Birthday 🥳
Thank you for all this information truly enlightening! About the backpack we know we can leave it but is actually our grocery bag so we are always trying to explain that it is empty because we have to put the food inside. So we don’t want to have to leave it behind. As for the bread, we are Italian and like it fresh as well, but we don’t eat much, so yes we put it in a bag and keep it for a few days. So we truly appreciate fresh bread!
