Similar thing happened to me when I went to Tunisia 20 years ago. I had a short tour followed by an ask to buy perfume I didn't want. But I look at it like this: It's a shady but quite mild business practice. I never felt unsafe and the perfume was cheap and they probably didn't earn much. At the same time I experienced local Tunisians, who were incredibly warm and hospitable to me to the extent that 20 years later I still have very warm feelings towards this country. So many times I see europeens in tunisia upset about a price rip off and then you find out they are talking about 5 dinars and 20 dinars. You are in a touristy town and even ther rip off price you speak of is still cheaper that your non rip off society sell it for. God Damn, how cheap do you have to be? 20 Dinars = 1 kilo of regular meat for Tunisians. we are not talking 100's of dollars, we're talking cents and few bucks....

I hate that about that ass hole. But there are many sides to every story, right? for example food in Tunisia is so cheap because most basic ingredients are government subsidized heavily and thats tax payers money going for sometimes ungrateful tourist who are 100's of times richer sometimes. is that fair? They buy the baguette for 2 euros in Europe in Tunisia they get 2 sandwiches filled with protein and delicious organic ingredient and served with a smile for 1 fucking euro and they fucking complain. in Tunisia we pay only 5 to 10% of the cost of the bread, the rest is picked up by the government, same for oil, some vegies, milk, etc...

My husband is Tunisian, I'm English, there are some people you have to be aware of. I feel this man was honest and he just wanted to show off his country. I have been married 30 years and I have always found that the people who have nothing give you everything and enjoy your company. One thing not to do is travel at night also do not fly your drone you can end up in prison. You have to get permission now. This is because of the shooting years ago and tourism is just making a come back. My husband bought a drone for our nephew and this was confiscated by the police. Please stay safe and most of all enjoy my second home. There is an app that is English to Tunisian Arabic and it will come in handy x
Well honestly I wouldn't see it as a scam. You were offered a free and pretty kind tour around the city. He might just know the shop owner and thought you might wanna buy something from him as a souvenir and help him out by the same occasion. But at the end, no one forced you to buy anything. They're not bad people. It's just backpackers tourism in Tunisia is quite new. We had an archaic tourism model for decades based purely on wealthy Europeans that would only leave the resorts to buy souvenirs. The mentality will have to change overtime and accept that not all tourists come with a sack full of money that they're just waiting to throw at the first touristic shop 😕 Thank you for sharing this experience, as this is also a great eye opener for us. Tunisians are very welcoming so please don't feel afraid to ask locals for help. Only in this comment section you'll find plenty of people willing to show you their hometowns. Hey Guys, don't feel bad about all what happened, what the man said concerning historical details and places in Hammamet was true, I know what it means to be kind and to fall for the act of kindness of other people who use it a tool of scamming, but eventually you got to learn something from it, if you want to just visit unknown places you can just go by your own or meet some good friends who show you around and tell you about our traditions and historical sites without having to take you to any shop in order to make you buy anything. I’m happy to discover how you’re enjoying your time in our country 😁 ( a little upset though about the “free” tour, but having a 2 hours tour, plus some food and drinks for 20 dinars is a good even for locals!) About the drone, it’s actually not a big deal, I think you can still use it (especially in places when there’s no huge police presence, and for a short time) and if anything happens just the fact that you’re tourists and not aware of how it works will solve things (especially since you came in with. There’s a lot of tourists who uses drones and even some locals btw😊)
I don't think the guy that gave you the tour was a scammer. Tunisia's economy heavily depends on tourism, and with covid (and other events) it hasn't been going very well, he most likely wanted to show a bit more of Tunisia to the world through your channel.
I love that you guys shared what happened and had the awkward uncomfortable discussion which many tourists go through. This happened to me in Java, Indonesia and I also didn’t have a great feeling but both of your points are valid. A lot of locals don’t realise how weak our rand is 😓

It's nice that u felt like u wanna give him money since the moment he started showing u around and u kinda did and got also a souvenir with which doesnt sound that bad but also it's not that nice when u realise it was all plotted from the beginning. I'm sure u guys are nice and sweet, but in such case u could've just told him that u weren't planning to buy anything or u dont have the money, thank him and get back to your journey and he'd do nothing about it. Tunisia may not be the prettiest country but it's loved for its culture, history, but especially friendly people and this man kinda ruined it. I really wish u came across any better person (a bit younger maybe with a slightly better english xd) who would just be proud of his country and show u around and help u live the best experience and wish for nothing in return. (damn i wish i were there or be of any help 😅😅) ps: using drones is very restricted in tunisia for safety reasons but so many people are doing their best to solve this. It's due to the fact that life and laws in tunisia are evolving at a different pace.

Remember they are also just trying to make a living, but you have to be street smart. When I was in Hammamet, one of the traders tried to sell me a bracelet. His starting price was 85 Dinar and I got it down to 7. Heck, he even tried to sell me a second one for 5 Dinar! That is just part of the game. I'm tunisian and i agree that he played some tricky game but he was honest 100% and all information concerning history and religion are True, but also you have to be cautious with some People but the most of tunisian People are very helpful and literally for free By the way you have to visit, Sousse,Bizerte, and you must to try eating kafteji, couscous,makroudh and a lot of traditional tunisian meals You're welcome

As a safety measure don't go with anyone you don't know. these shop owners will do whatever it takes to get some bucks from you due to the hard economic conditions that Tunisia is experiencing. But it doesn't erase the fact that he wasn't upfront about it which sucked a bit. Nevertheless, we welcome you with open arms and warm hearts. Try to find someone local that one of your friends know and you will get the experience of a lifetime, especially in the remote parts of Tunisia. man i miss home
Hi Sarah and Marek, I am happy that you enjoyed your little tour in Tunisia. Regarding the blue and white colors, they were introduced by a French artist, back in 1920, when he used to live in Sidi Bou Said (by the way, the bambalouni in Sidi Bou Said is 1dinar, not 10, I think it was a misunderstanding from your side (because I watched a video of another couple's first impression, they paid 1dinar...BTW, the same bambalouni costs more than 15 dinars in UAE, shame!) Now, regarding the experience that you had to go through, I share Marek feelings, unfortunately :( . I avoid going alone to buy in Hammamet, which is my city of origins, because sellers there (not all of course) tend to ask me for double price just because they are not used to see me around! And this kills me every time! It is very painful to feel cheated by your own people. Eventhough 20 dinars is a good price for a 2 hours tour, the fact that Hasan told you that he will give you a free tour and maybe one day, you can pay him back if he goes to South Africa, he should have kept his word. What he did is against Islam's values... The price of the spices is a lot cheaper. And he didn't take you to the place where they prepare these spices, he just took you to a shop that sells fresher than the small packed spices, most probably his friend's shop...But I really appreciate Sarah's way of considering the full part of the cup. Most people in Tunisia do have poverty problems, prices are getting higher while jobs are not always available and salaries are not that much. This is not a reason, yes, but it is known that touristic areas are all about bargaining. So, it was a good idea to say that you don't have more money. My advice for next time is to always keep smaller bills and coins on you and to Google to have an idea about the cost of each item . You can first go to a supermarket where the prices are fixed and compare (regular supermarkets like Anwar, Carrefour..., not the touristic ones) And never say that it is your first time in the country! Say that you came before or that you are waiting for your old Tunisian friend who will show you around...Use Google map to locate the best rated places, ask other tourists on TripAdvisor or other travel websites...all informations and prices are available on the net... And Sarah, I really appreciate the fact that you respected the culture and the Tunisians' values by wearing modest clothes. It shows how kind, respectful, and pure you are. May Allah bless you, dear! there are people who will offer you things (remember the bambalounis in Sidi bou said) and others who will try to take advantage of you. It's like everywhere else I think this does not only happen to tourists, but also to locals
You are right ,but in many western countries ,it does not happen a lot or never . Other there people are not as warm or generous like in Morroco or Tunisia but more rightneous and honest .
@@act_sion I live in a western country, countries here do NOT depend on tourism. Tunisia does, or atleast did for most of its post-french occupation history. That's why you'll always find this weird mix of great hospitality and kindness mixed with trying to make a living. Some people like Marek will not appreciate it but that's how it is. It happened all the time to me and i'm Tunisian.

@@act_sion What you witnessed in this video is no where near scamming, you get a service and sometimes an amazing one and in return you're "expected" to return the favor. Is it honest? definitely not, but that's why tourists should do their research prior to diving inside touristic spots.

I think that it was a nice experience: you learned things, got to talk to people, had things explained, went on a tour by car and on foot, and you are still safe, and nobody robbed you. So I think that’s great and these are good people. BUT you are right. It was an act. The man does not come across to me as a scammer, though, although he should have been honest, straightforward, with you from the start. He’s a decent man, with family maybe, didn’t ask for money for his time and more, but I think he gets some kind of commission for having brought you to that shop. He was just trying to make an extra buck off you, sure, but he did it in the sweetest, cleanest way possible. Lol. People are very nice, helpful, but they don’t extend their help that way. They are way too busy. The way he offered, I would have kept my boundaries. No car, no tour for me unless I negotiate a price, and make sure to take down the plate number and call a friend in front of the guy (just in case… yeah, streetwise). Also the best spices and prices are found in markets supervised by the state or special spice shops. Prices must be indicated clearly. That’s the law. About euros, I know. That’s because 1 euro = 3,500 dinars ( about that), but also because the prices of things have increased, especially imported things (plus, tariffs are skyrocketing these days), while salaries have remained low, very low compared to those of Europe. So I can understand why they look at you as though you were an additional source of income, but I don’t condone it. If you are interested in tours or hikes, check the Syndicat d’Initiative of the town. They will also give you all kinds of advice. There’s also a website for expats that could help you in your kind of tourism (close to the population and the culture). I think it’s in French but they can use English. I went to Turkey and I was about to loose my mind by how hungry people are to scam on you just because you're a tourist. You don't meet scammers by accident in Turkey, they are everywhere. Even their uber drivers are scammers, and no matter how street smart you think, they will amaze you by how cunning they are, and it's insane because they have a great economy there, not like us ,and there is no reason why they're doing that. However, I am glad the man was nice, he gave you a beautiful tour and the stories he told you are true. But he should've been honest with you from the beginning, nothing justifies what he did. Next time, make sure you don't buy anything you don't want! Have a nice stay❤❤❤❤

Agreed. My wife is Tunisian and we travel there. People are super friendly, but the economy is not good and people have to hustle a bit. I've never felt pressured and you can always say, NO. Plus, they do this to my wife, speaking Tunisian to boot. It's just part of the culture. They expect you to barter and haggle. It's part of the process, but we're not used to it coming from the West.

In general, Tunisians are kind and provide assistance, but it is better to communicate with official authorities specialized in tourism so that your visit is comprehensive to most of the important places as much as possible, and so that you are not exposed to fraud. We wish you pleasant times

go to Hergla! it's an authentic isolated village in Sousse where nobody will bother u with their offers. it's one of my fav towns because it's very calm (beautifully loud by the rocky shore), bcz of its romantic atmosphere and its breathtaking sunset. enjoy ur stay here!
Awesome Video! unregarding the "Scam" part... P.S: In Tunisia are small to middle size drone (less than 25kg weight and does not fly more than 150 meters from the ground) allowed only if you have a license. Exactly! Local government has sometimes a dyed-in-the-wool regulation towards Tech.
As you said in 14:54. As a tourist in any country you can’t expect to get anything for free. Hey gave you a nice tour, and drove you around. Honestly that’s so cheap for 20 dinar. + you got some spices☺️
Also if you're going to count the "free tour" that he did as a sort of compensation well then he's dishonest!! He said from the beginning "oh I don't want money this is for free" ! See? Then took them to a shop which I believe could be his and then made them pay 120 dinar for some spice and 2 cups of "Berber" (lool) tea 🤣
I'm from tunisia and i think this tip will help you guys know how much things really cost ( Average daily rate is 30dt maybe 35dt ) I mean 50dt of spices will get you kilos of it 😅

I live in Hammamet. I can say that the special welcome this man gave you was not a trick. He only wanted to celebrate you after that tour. Twenty dinars are not important money in Tunisia for a person to tire himself out for. The fuel that He used it in the car during that trip for more than twenty dinars... He just wanted that elderly salesman to benefit from it.
The way I see it, he's not a scammer but what he did is trying to soften you with his kindness and free services so that you'd feel bad about yourselves if you don't buy from his/his friend's shop. It's basically a free service leading to a paid service. I personnally don't like that. And I knew something would happen in the end when he started doing some nonsensical stuff like telling Sarah to go the end of the alley and come back, or telling you to make wishes when you crossed your hands, these acts are clearly part of a show.
Sarah is more positive and very reasonable while you are nagging a little bit about everything. Fortunately, she is adding positive vibes to the trip! What you ve been offered by the guy worths more than 20 dinars!
I think he's correct to feel slighted by it. And even if that tour typically costs more, he should've been honest with them from the start. Nonetheless, I'd say they could at least learn from this to say "no, thank you" from the start, and to generally suspect extreme hospitality - albeit being a trait not unpeculiar to the people.
The whole time I was like why is this guy is too nice!? Don’t get me wrong, hospitably is indeed part of our culture, and nothing back is expected but that was too much. Actually, it all made sense when he stopped in front of that shop…To be be fair he did give the most authentic experience a tourist can have, but he could have been upfront about it from the beginning, and just tell that you about the shop visit at the end. I do have a question though, did you try telling him that you guys are visiting on a limited budget? Most tend to understand and will just let you be. I bet they will even give you a free souvenir! Because after all they don’t mean it as they were trying to trick you into buying their goods, they view it as, let’s say, “I scratch your back and you scratch mine” 😅 Definitely still an a.h move though!!
They thought that our country is like an African jungle where people run behind tourists and offer them everything for free. There are people who work. The guy help our economy. If they are too poor, I don't care because they accepted that guy.
And oh I forgot. Check the Guide Michelin/Tunisia. I think there’s an English version. Check Guide Michelin uk. The guide will indicate all the great spots to visit. Since you are in Cap Bon, don’t forget to visit the small city of Kelibia on the sea. On the way to Kelibia, stop at the Phaenician excavated town of Kerkouane, overlooking the sea. Awesome. The landlord or the Syndicat d’Initiative can help u find your way. Travel safe, though, in a group. Bye
I am sorry for what happened to you, just I want you to know that one single bad act don’t reflect the majority, and I knew that the guy was a scam (I knew he was gonna charge you money) cauz first of all he kept saying (4 times) "i don’t want money" and also the fact that he talk 10 languages.. cauz generally in Tunisian touristic cities if someone talk many languages that means he work in the tourism so he have tricks to make you pay, I m sorry again for what happened to you … but as you said it’s an experience to remember, so yeah have fun and just be careful sometimes it’s not dangerous but there is some scammers in touristic places, this exist in every country, and yeah have fun ! And for the drone you can fly it but you have to ask police department first you need a permission if you got it everything will be okay you can fly it ! Bonus : ask your followers for free tours in their cities ! They speak English and they won’t charge you 😉

It's easy as sarah said to presume that all the effort that has been made is not for free and it was necessary as she said to give him the 20 dinars before arriving at the stage of the shop or to offer him money from the beginning to avoid any surprises. no , the guy was not a scammer , actually tunisian economy depends in a really big percentage in tourisme , that's why you find such expensive things like that we as tunsians also pay the same amount of money in places such Sidi bousaid and other touristic destinations ^-^ , also the tunisian Dinare keeps going down against euro and dollar so .... .. anyways , if you guys wonna take a tour in Bizerte ( for free just pay ur meals and transportation cuz i don't have a car hhh ) u are all welcome , we have such wonderfull nature especially now in winter it is reallyy breath taking .. i live in a small town in Bizerte named Sejnan , you are all wlcm ❤

As a Tunisian, I will tell you, the price for two magnets is too much but for the tour and paying him 20 Dinars, is ok, it worth it. But in the same time you can make the same tour by your self for free. Anyway, this is happening everywhere around the world in all Touristic areas. In Tunis Medina, these things will not happen to you since the Medina is not touristic area

Hi, I just watched this & 1st time on your channel. Understanding the culture, you're not wrong to be offended and feel somewhat manipulated. In the Arab culture when you invite someone its implicit that you're taking care of them as your guests whether its for 5 minutes or days. That means you do not expect , imply or ask for anything but the honour of hosting is enough & how well that's done is a point of pride. There is something called "Mugamala" which is e.g. taking a gift to a host, its good manners to do that & the host in the culture will usually refuse but you insist and they reluctantly accept, that "dance" of reciprocity is the meaning of that act. Again, its not expected and especially from someone from a different culture. Its probable that this man knew the shop owner from the general community & thought it might be beneficial in the "tour" to bring you by & perhaps help him out with a potential sale As a fellow keen world traveller, I wouldn't take it to heart but I wasn't there & only you know the vibes of the whole interaction which only you know.

You may not be familiar with the typical prices for tours and services in Tunisia, It's important to keep in mind that the person who drove you around the city and provided a free tour invested time, energy, and money into the experience. Guided tours in Tunisia typically cost between 150 TND and 300 TND per day. The price of the spices and souvenirs is considered fair, and there is no indication of a scam, plot, or hidden agenda as if the cost of the spices was divided between two, it would amount to around 10 TND per person, which isn't a significant amount in this country. Instead of showing dissatisfaction and claims about the guy in a video without considering how this may affect him, it would have been a better option to inquire or negotiate the prices before buying the spices if you were not satisfied with the prices. It's unfortunate that you're not able to fully appreciate the effort the guide put in to provide you with a unique experience.
You are right ..these men are called .rabatteur in french.they wait for tourists,show them around and take them to shops etc. And the price you quoted is extremely expensive.am glad you didn't agree..
Similar thing happened to me when I went to Tunisia 20 years ago. I had a short tour followed by an ask to buy perfume I didn't want. But I look at it like this: It's a shady but quite mild business practice. I never felt unsafe and the perfume was cheap and they probably didn't earn much. At the same time I experienced local Tunisians, who were incredibly warm and hospitable to me to the extent that 20 years later I still have very warm feelings towards this country. So many times I see europeens in tunisia upset about a price rip off and then you find out they are talking about 5 dinars and 20 dinars. You are in a touristy town and even ther rip off price you speak of is still cheaper that your non rip off society sell it for. God Damn, how cheap do you have to be? 20 Dinars = 1 kilo of regular meat for Tunisians. we are not talking 100's of dollars, we're talking cents and few bucks....

in Tunisia they get 2 sandwiches filled with protein and delicious organic ingredient and served with a smile for 1 fucking euro and they fucking complain. in Tunisia we pay only 5 to 10% of the cost of the bread, the rest is picked up by the government, same for oil, some vegies, milk, etc...

The man who took you on a tour, what a kind, educated, and committed man. His name is Hassan, and he represents me as a Tunisian and represents the majority of the Tunisian people, who host visitors for free in their homes in response to God’s commands in Islam, and this does not detract anything from the profits of those who work in the tourism field and hostels. We always command them to fear God with regard to our guests.
My husband is Tunisian, I'm English, there are some people you have to be aware of. I feel this man was honest and he just wanted to show off his country.
I have been married 30 years and I have always found that the people who have nothing give you everything and enjoy your company.
One thing not to do is travel at night also do not fly your drone you can end up in prison. You have to get permission now. This is because of the shooting years ago and tourism is just making a come back.
My husband bought a drone for our nephew and this was confiscated by the police.

Well honestly I wouldn't see it as a scam. You were offered a free and pretty kind tour around the city. He might just know the shop owner and thought you might wanna buy something from him as a souvenir and help him out by the same occasion. But at the end, no one forced you to buy anything. They're not bad people. It's just backpackers tourism in Tunisia is quite new. We had an archaic tourism model for decades based purely on wealthy Europeans that would only leave the resorts to buy souvenirs. The mentality will have to change overtime and accept that not all tourists come with a sack full of money that they're just waiting to throw at the first touristic shop 😕

Hey Guys, don't feel bad about all what happened, what the man said concerning historical details and places in Hammamet was true, I know what it means to be kind and to fall for the act of kindness of other people who use it a tool of scamming, but eventually you got to learn something from it, if you want to just visit unknown places you can just go by your own or meet some good friends who show you around and tell you about our traditions and historical sites without having to take you to any shop in order to make you buy anything. About the drone, it’s actually not a big deal, I think you can still use it (especially in places when there’s no huge police presence, and for a short time) and if anything happens just the fact that you’re tourists and not aware of how it works will solve things (especially since you came in with. There’s a lot of tourists who uses drones and even some locals btw😊)

Tunisia's economy heavily depends on tourism, and with covid (and other events) it hasn't been going very well, he most likely wanted to show a bit more of Tunisia to the world through your channel.

I'm sure u guys are nice and sweet, but in such case u could've just told him that u weren't planning to buy anything or u dont have the money, thank him and get back to your journey and he'd do nothing about it.
Tunisia may not be the prettiest country but it's loved for its culture, history, but especially friendly people and this man kinda ruined it.
I really wish u came across any better person (a bit younger maybe with a slightly better english xd) who would just be proud of his country and show u around and help u live the best experience and wish for nothing in return. (damn i wish i were there or be of any help 😅😅)
ps: using drones is very restricted in tunisia for safety reasons but so many people are doing their best to solve this. It's due to the fact that life and laws in tunisia are evolving at a different pace.

Remember they are also just trying to make a living, but you have to be street smart. When I was in Hammamet, one of the traders tried to sell me a bracelet. His starting price was 85 Dinar and I got it down to 7. Heck, he even tried to sell me a second one for 5 Dinar! That is just part of the game. Embrace the challenge of a culture outside your comfort zone and enjoy the rest of Tunisia! Veilig reis julle twee!

As a safety measure don't go with anyone you don't know. these shop owners will do whatever it takes to get some bucks from you due to the hard economic conditions that Tunisia is experiencing. I am happy that you enjoyed your little tour in Tunisia. Regarding the blue and white colors, they were introduced by a French artist, back in 1920, when he used to live in Sidi Bou Said (by the way, the bambalouni in Sidi Bou Said is 1dinar, not 10, I think it was a misunderstanding from your side (because I watched a video of another couple's first impression, they paid 1dinar...BTW, the same bambalouni costs more than 15 dinars in UAE, shame!)
Now, regarding the experience that you had to go through, I share Marek feelings, unfortunately :( . I avoid going alone to buy in Hammamet, which is my city of origins, because sellers there (not all of course) tend to ask me for double price just because they are not used to see me around! And this kills me every time! It is very painful to feel cheated by your own people. Eventhough 20 dinars is a good price for a 2 hours tour, the fact that Hasan told you that he will give you a free tour and maybe one day, you can pay him back if he goes to South Africa, he should have kept his word. What he did is against Islam's values... The price of the spices is a lot cheaper. And he didn't take you to the place where they prepare these spices, he just took you to a shop that sells fresher than the small packed spices, most probably his friend's shop...But I really appreciate Sarah's way of considering the full part of the cup. Most people in Tunisia do have poverty problems, prices are getting higher while jobs are not always available and salaries are not that much. This is not a reason, yes, but it is known that touristic areas are all about bargaining. So, it was a good idea to say that you don't have more money.
My advice for next time is to always keep smaller bills and coins on you and to Google to have an idea about the cost of each item . You can first go to a supermarket where the prices are fixed and compare (regular supermarkets like Anwar, Carrefour..., not the touristic ones) And never say that it is your first time in the country! Say that you came before or that you are waiting for your old Tunisian friend who will show you around...Use Google map to locate the best rated places, ask other tourists on TripAdvisor or other travel websites...all informations and prices are available on the net...
And Sarah, I really appreciate the fact that you respected the culture and the Tunisians' values by wearing modest clothes. It shows how kind, respectful, and pure you are. May Allah bless you, dear! You are very sweet. Actually, you are both wonderful, I was watching your videos with my daughter, and we were fascinated by your characters. Hats off for both of you.

You are right ,but in many western countries ,it does not happen a lot or never . Other there people are not as warm or generous like in Morroco or Tunisia but more rightneous and honest .
@@act_sion I live in a western country, countries here do NOT depend on tourism. Tunisia does, or atleast did for most of its post-french occupation history. That's why you'll always find this weird mix of great hospitality and kindness mixed with trying to make a living. Some people like Marek will not appreciate it but that's how it is. It happened all the time to me and i'm Tunisian.

I think that it was a nice experience: you learned things, got to talk to people, had things explained, went on a tour by car and on foot, and you are still safe, and nobody robbed you. So I think that’s great and these are good people. BUT you are right. It was an act. The man does not come across to me as a scammer, though, although he should have been honest, straightforward, with you from the start. He’s a decent man, with family maybe, didn’t ask for money for his time and more, but I think he gets some kind of commission for having brought you to that shop. He was just trying to make an extra buck off you, sure, but he did it in the sweetest, cleanest way possible. Lol. People are very nice, helpful, but they don’t extend their help that way. They are way too busy. The way he offered, I would have kept my boundaries. No car, no tour for me unless I negotiate a price, and make sure to take down the plate number and call a friend in front of the guy (just in case… yeah, streetwise).
Also the best spices and prices are found in markets supervised by the state or special spice shops. Prices must be indicated clearly. That’s the law.
About euros, I know. That’s because 1 euro = 3,500 dinars ( about that), but also because the prices of things have increased, especially imported things (plus, tariffs are skyrocketing these days), while salaries have remained low, very low compared to those of Europe. So I can understand why they look at you as though you were an additional source of income, but I don’t condone it.
If you are interested in tours or hikes, check the Syndicat d’Initiative of the town. They will also give you all kinds of advice. There’s also a website for expats that could help you in your kind of tourism (close to the population and the culture). I think it’s in French but they can use English. Good luck on your adventures. 😎 Hope I have helped.

Actually these people are everywhere in the world, not just in Tunisia. I went to Turkey and I was about to loose my mind by how hungry people are to scam on you just because you're a tourist. You don't meet scammers by accident in Turkey, they are everywhere. Even their uber drivers are scammers, and no matter how street smart you think, they will amaze you by how cunning they are, and it's insane because they have a great economy there, not like us ,and there is no reason why they're doing that.
However, I am glad the man was nice, he gave you a beautiful tour and the stories he told you are true. But he should've been honest with you from the beginning, nothing justifies what he did.
Next time, make sure you don't buy anything you don't want!

Agreed. My wife is Tunisian and we travel there. People are super friendly, but the economy is not good and people have to hustle a bit. I've never felt pressured and you can always say, NO. Plus, they do this to my wife, speaking Tunisian to boot. It's just part of the culture. They expect you to barter and haggle. It's part of the process, but we're not used to it coming from the West.

In general, Tunisians are kind and provide assistance, but it is better to communicate with official authorities specialized in tourism so that your visit is comprehensive to most of the important places as much as possible, and so that you are not exposed to fraud.

All you need to fly your drone is an authorisation from ministry of interior (basically, the police) and you can use it afterwards 😊

go to Hergla! it's an authentic isolated village in Sousse where nobody will bother u with their offers. it's one of my fav towns because it's very calm (beautifully loud by the rocky shore), bcz of its romantic atmosphere and its breathtaking sunset. enjoy ur stay here!

I live in Hammamet. I can say that the special welcome this man gave you was not a trick. He only wanted to celebrate you after that tour. Twenty dinars are not important money in Tunisia for a person to tire himself out for. The fuel that He used it in the car during that trip for more than twenty dinars... He just wanted that elderly salesman to benefit from it.

The way I see it, he's not a scammer but what he did is trying to soften you with his kindness and free services so that you'd feel bad about yourselves if you don't buy from his/his friend's shop. It's basically a free service leading to a paid service.
I personnally don't like that. And I knew something would happen in the end when he started doing some nonsensical stuff like telling Sarah to go the end of the alley and come back, or telling you to make wishes when you crossed your hands, these acts are clearly part of a show.

I think he's correct to feel slighted by it. And even if that tour typically costs more, he should've been honest with them from the start. Nonetheless, I'd say they could at least learn from this to say "no, thank you" from the start, and to generally suspect extreme hospitality - albeit being a trait not unpeculiar to the people.

The whole time I was like why is this guy is too nice!? Don’t get me wrong, hospitably is indeed part of our culture, and nothing back is expected but that was too much. Actually, it all made sense when he stopped in front of that shop…To be be fair he did give the most authentic experience a tourist can have, but he could have been upfront about it from the beginning, and just tell that you about the shop visit at the end. I do have a question though, did you try telling him that you guys are visiting on a limited budget? Most tend to understand and will just let you be. I bet they will even give you a free souvenir! Because after all they don’t mean it as they were trying to trick you into buying their goods, they view it as, let’s say, “I scratch your back and you scratch mine” 😅 Definitely still an a.h move though!!
They thought that our country is like an African jungle where people run behind tourists and offer them everything for free. There are people who work. The guy help our economy. If they are too poor, I don't care because they accepted that guy.

I am sorry for what happened to you, just I want you to know that one single bad act don’t reflect the majority, and I knew that the guy was a scam (I knew he was gonna charge you money) cauz first of all he kept saying (4 times) "i don’t want money" and also the fact that he talk 10 languages.. cauz generally in Tunisian touristic cities if someone talk many languages that means he work in the tourism so he have tricks to make you pay, I m sorry again for what happened to you … but as you said it’s an experience to remember, so yeah have fun and just be careful sometimes it’s not dangerous but there is some scammers in touristic places, this exist in every country, and yeah have fun ! And for the drone you can fly it but you have to ask police department first you need a permission if you got it everything will be okay you can fly it ! Bonus : ask your followers for free tours in their cities ! They speak English and they won’t charge you 😉

no , the guy was not a scammer , actually tunisian economy depends in a really big percentage in tourisme , that's why you find such expensive things like that we as tunsians also pay the same amount of money in places such Sidi bousaid and other touristic destinations ^-^ , also the tunisian Dinare keeps going down against euro and dollar so .... .. anyways , if you guys wonna take a tour in Bizerte ( for free just pay ur meals and transportation cuz i don't have a car hhh ) u are all welcome , we have such wonderfull nature especially now in winter it is reallyy breath taking .. i live in a small town in Bizerte named Sejnan , you are all wlcm ❤

As a Tunisian, I will tell you, the price for two magnets is too much but for the tour and paying him 20 Dinars, is ok, it worth it. But in the same time you can make the same tour by your self for free. Anyway, this is happening everywhere around the world in all Touristic areas. In Tunis Medina, these things will not happen to you since the Medina is not touristic area

Hi, I just watched this & 1st time on your channel. Understanding the culture, you're not wrong to be offended and feel somewhat manipulated. In the Arab culture when you invite someone its implicit that you're taking care of them as your guests whether its for 5 minutes or days. That means you do not expect , imply or ask for anything but the honour of hosting is enough & how well that's done is a point of pride. There is something called "Mugamala" which is e.g. taking a gift to a host, its good manners to do that & the host in the culture will usually refuse but you insist and they reluctantly accept, that "dance" of reciprocity is the meaning of that act. Again, its not expected and especially from someone from a different culture.
Its probable that this man knew the shop owner from the general community & thought it might be beneficial in the "tour" to bring you by & perhaps help him out with a potential sale As a fellow keen world traveller, I wouldn't take it to heart but I wasn't there & only you know the vibes of the whole interaction which only you know.

You are right ..these men are called .rabatteur in french.they wait for tourists,show them around and take them to shops etc. And the price you quoted is extremely expensive.am glad you didn't agree..
