I was at quite a few matches of this season. It was disappointing. But Klinsmann was a joy to watch

If you want to see Stuart Nethercott at his very, very best take a look at the Southampton home game from the same season.

Nethercott, the Spurs centre half, was way out of his depth! He was not a quick player and was thus often beaten for pace. Also, he was often caught out of position in matches. He didn’t stay too long at the club before he was sold. During the next ten years, Spurs had a succession of centre halves, and apart from Sol Campbell, most of them were mediocre!

The 1990’s for Spurs fans were totally dismal. Under Alan Sugar, the club drifted into mediocrity, unable to compete with the top teams. Spurs were often thumped by other teams because their defence was so woeful. Managers came and went, but one thing never changed was the lack of decent defenders! This game perfectly summed the chronically poor defending. The fortunes of Spurs were not to change until Martin Jol arrived on the scene ten years later.
