I’m younger, but I’ve recently started carrying around a notebook/pencil because I believe it’s more functional than getting distracted with my phone all the time! :-)
Alot easier to keep track of that way IMO. Phones are good for reminders but for specific information like shopping lists etc the old fashioned way is still best.
I'm 78 and used to be a tour guide at a Living History Museum in Phoenix, Arizona. I wore period clothing and had a pocket watch in my vest pocket, I got more question from school kids about that watch than any of the 29 historical buildings and their contents that my tour covered!! El Mirage, Arizona
I didn't know people DON'T carry keys anymore! I still have my house key, car key, mail key, and a couple more keys on a chain that I have with me at all times
I remember laying on the floor reading the comics. I still carry hankies- I have about a dozen, I also wear aprons. We would always check the phones booths to see if someone forgot their change. I remember all those different brands of gum. oh and the essential wrist watch, I still don't have a smart phone, just don't need it.
I carried most of these things at one time or another. Still carry keys, wallet and a handkerchief anytime I leave the house. Notepad and an ink pen were a staple in my 36 years at work! I must be getting old....I remember when a phone call was a dime!
In the 70's my father would come home from work and probably lost 5 pounds emptying his pockets on the fireplace mantle: Wallet, *tons* of change, keys, pocketknife, embossed handkerchief, cigarettes, lighter, Dentyne, 2-3 pens, comb, reading glasses, etc, etc.
I remember going in to Newberry's or Woolworth's department stores and seeing boxes and boxes of handkerchiefs and how excited I was to have an excuse to buy gloves. Oh, my! But they had long gloves and short ones, some with buttons and so many different colors. Sometimes Momma would give us a cin-cin to freshen our breath.
Back in the late 50’s and 60’s our family doctor smoked all through the visits with my mom, brother and me. He died of tongue cancer. 😢 He had his office in his own home and it was beautiful. Glass filled cases of drugs. He would prescribe and send you home with the medicine in a little paper pouch.
Most t-shirts don’t have pockets anymore, because most people don’t smoke. But the clothing industry never gave a thought to where we’re supposed to put our reading glasses when not in use. I guess in our pants pocket, so we can snap them in half when we sit down.
My Dad taught me at a very young age "Always have a watch, pen, and pocket knife with you". If you work for someone and are paid an hourly wage, you need to carry a watch. That way, you know when start/ stop time is and you can keep track of how much time you've put in and you don't cheat your employer OR yourself out of time/pay. You also needed a Pen to fill out your time card/sheet or to make notes of what you needed to do for the day. And pocket knives were used for many things. I still carry all of those things to this day and I'm 67. I've worked with hundreds of people (both old and young) who were never taught this and are constantly asking to borrow a pen, or knife, or what the time is. (even though my 2 Sons were taught this, they never carry any of those items, LOL).
I still carry and use keys, I couldn't get in the house or drive my car without them. In my pocketbook I have a pocket knife, cigarettes and lighter, chewing gum and of course a little notebook. I wear a watch. I still have a bank account with a checkbook and I carry cash. Today, even though I carry all the necessities one of those items is my cell phone.
I chewed Beeman's gum all the time in the 60s and 70s. When I find it on rare occasions at specialty candy stores, I usually pick up a dozen packs or so.
I got my first watch when I was about 9 or 10. I don't even know where it is, but I still wear wrist watches with hands, don't like digital watches. I'm 63.
When I took the commuter train to work I had a tote bag that had a kitchen sink full of everything. I can’t tell you how many tissues I handed to people that noses’ were “running” That constant sniffing! I was the old lady that always had facial tissues. I was 32 years old and had three children. Mothers always had tissues
People still wear wrist watches, carry keys and chewing gum! You forgot to mention people used to carry pocket radios and pocket cameras like the 110 film camera that I would take when traveling!
Cigarettes, transistor radios, flask to carry for liquid refreshments, news papers and ladies or gentleman usually wore hats. And of course newspapers or magazines.
In the early 80s a boot flask was the ideal way to smuggle booze into our college football games. My boyfriend had one in his cowboy boots, lol. Bourbon and Coke was our staple drink while we yelled our heads off for our team. Fun times. 🍻

These haters will always find some outlet to trash you. It's best just to ignore them.
As a former railroad man I alwys had my Hamilton 992-B pocket watch on me. In a heavy 10Ct. gold case it was accurate as heck. It did run a little fast, though. It gained 15 seconds a week so I set it back a minute every month. 😊
I too still carry keys. The New York Post is delivered everyday and the Wall Street Journal on weekends. Never will get used to reading papers online. Great video as always. 👍👍
I'm a walker and kept a small nice leather fanny pack I found at a thrift store and hide under my old school camp style shirts when out walking. Hands free is nice. I'm retired, get outdoors and walk daily. I add or subtract cards, some cash and whatever to this fanny pack. I absolutely HATE carrying my dumbed-down android cell phone but put it in my jeans pocket. Oh, and I carry a clean hankie and wear a watch.
6:52 A common misconception today is that Prohibition made drinking illegal. No. Prohibition made the production, transport, and sale of alcohol illegal but NOT the consumption. Fun fact: Wrigley's started out as a soap company and included gum as a premium in their products. You could go out on a limb and say the gum took over haha.
I haven't worn a wristwatch in years since I started using Cell Phones in the 90s. There are times I miss wearing one it would be more convenient than pulling my phone out on a time check.
I know this is talking about earlier but in the 80s we used to carry our Walkman everywhere. It looks big and bulky now but it was a must if you went anywhere. I loved my Walkman. For younger people, a Walkman was a music player that played cassette tapes. If you were lucky it also had a radio.
Even being a millennial, as a kid, I always used to and still carry a notepad, a pen, a stick of gum, and change. As I am getting older, I still carry around a flask, a pocket knife, and a hankerchief. I used to smoke, too, so a Zippo and a pack of cigarettes were on my person, as well.
That one line "plastic credit cards had us believing we had more money than we actually did" sums up why we our a trillion $ in debt today. Debt = loss of freedom. Exactly what the govt wants.
I still use keys though. As a GenX, I used some of these things growing up and witnessed the fast paced changes of technologies from 70s to present 2020s. In summary, most of the devices mentioned are now integrated into the 2 main technologies we use everyday: SMARTPHONE and INTERNET. Watching this Recollection clip makes me NOSTALGIC really. 😄
THE UNIFORM of a kid in the early 1960's.....thick scratchy denim jeans with the cuffs rolled up....denim repair patches ironed on the knees, a pull-over shirt with horizontal stripes, "Keds" brand high top sneakers, a white rabbits foot on a small chain hooked to the belt loop of your jeans, HAIRCUT: very short with the front left longer so you had some hair to comb back and....rubbing that cinnamon smelling waxy stick on your hair to keep the front part in place. INSIDE POCKETS: Usually not more than 25 cents , a boy scout pocket knife, possibly a few rocks that look cool and maybe a fire ball or a stick of gum.
I still carry keys, a wallet, my watch and my pocket knife daily. (horse farm girl here, my pocket knife was a gift from my grandpa). I never did like carrying a purse.
Address book, checkbook, street map, extra change for pay phone, comb, pen, stationery, camera, blue chip stamp books, a lighter or matches (even if you didn't smoke). My dad always carried a cloth handkerchief. Mom always had gum in her purse for us kids.
Used to carry all these except cigarettes. Still carry a pocket knife in my purse. Being self-reliant, I keep-close lots of things I need to "strip" when I must fly.
Covid shortages had me switch to handkerchiefs and floor sack towels. I haven't gone back. Toilet has a bidet. I still have a pocket knife and I was wearing my alpine hat today. I may be uncool but I'm happy.
I must be living in a time warp because I still carry around most of these things in my pocketbook! A little notebook with a pen, pack of gum, magnifying glass and small collapsible scissor, a lighter, checkbook with a ledger because I refuse to do online banking, I always carry cash and change in a wallet and little change purse, and I still have two sets of keys, one for my apartment and one for my old car! And I have a flip phone with no Internet access so yeah, I have to write down things to remember! 😂😂 I like it that way! 👍🏼😊
Uh, we had Mastercard, American Express, BankAmericard (later became VISA) and store specific charge cards way before 'portable' phones and tech came out. We also had gas charge cards. Credit cards have been around since the 1950's.
1:59 The "mini-pocket" on a pair of jeans is a holdover from old cow puncher days when the cowboys would tuck their (on a chain) pocket watch into that mini pocket.
I used to carry a big Case jackknife. I honed it on a natural Arkansas whetstone until it was sharp as a razor. I used it when I went fishing in the Mississippi.
Still carry keys myself and a lot of them! Don't own a pocket knife anymore! Have knives, but they're all huge! And I carry my cigarettes everywhere also! Have a 97 F150 that has a lighter and an ashtray, as well!
Hey there. I am a 3rd generation handkerchief user. My grandfathers, and my father, had a stack of handkerchiefs in their chest of drawers. I have/and still use handkerchiefs to this very day, mine are in assorted colors. Where back in the day, they were strictly white linen. "You never know when you are going to need some Liquid Courage." Well, I am also a 3rd Generation man who's need for Liquid Courage spanned 24 hours and then some. Thankfully, it's been 24 years since I have taken a tipple !! There was a time, when as kids, we were mandated to go buy cigarettes for our parents at the local corner store, then grocery store, then convenience store. What's worse was when your mother asked you to go buy her feminine hygiene products !! Oh the embarrassment.
Besides my phone and wallet, I carry my house key, shed key, car fob, key to my parents' house, mini rechargeable flashlight, Leatherman Squirt PS4, and a couple tiny (physical size) thumb drives. On work days I also have my work ID/office key card.
Everything you mentioned I still carry except a lighter (use to when I smoked) and a flask. I carry change in a flat rubber lemon shaped coin purse, a pocket watch working on the ranch and a pocket notebook at work. I’ve worn a hat all my life but not a fedora. Oh ya, I carry a money clip too.
I still carry a pocket knife at work. We're always dealing with ropes (I'm in agriculture) and feed bags. I still carry cash. I frequent some places that are cash only, and some places give you a discount for paying in cash. Also for lottery tickets. I wear an analog watch and carry lots of things in my purse (or as my daughter's best friend says, a feminine survival kit).😂
There were little metal matchbook holders on keyrings. I' m sure plenty of people have keys and pocket knives....I do. In school ( 1970s), I had one of those odd plastic coin holders that you would squeeze to open....every one I remember owning had a company name on it. Freebies from the State Fair. Change for payphones, lunch money or a vending machine.
I remember when Hollywood portrayed elite playboys and foreign royalty as not just having their own engraved gold or silver cigarette cases but also their own custom-blended cigarettes that resided therein. JJS
I still carry a tape measure and Swiss Army knife on my keychain. Never know when you might need those tools, and I do use them often, probably at least weekly. The measuring tool on my smartphone is fairly accurate, but it takes longer to use than a real tape measure, other than when I need to measure something more than 3 ft long.
It often depends on where I'm going, but 90% of the time I still carry keys, pocket knife, wear a watch, have a billfold with some cash, change in my pocket, carry a handkerchief, lighter and cigarettes, a pen and notebook, wear a hat, and carry mints instead of gum. I do have a cell phone, but seldom carry it and as of this moment, I'm not even sure where it is. After all, I got by for over 60 yrs. without one.
When my dad past in 2002, all four kids found something of dad's they wanted to save as a memento. For me, it was his pocket knife, and handkerchiefs. While I never found the need to carry around a pocket knife, I did decide that maybe handkerchiefs would be handy. Today, I always have one in my pocket. What an incredibly useful thing to have on you. I use them everyday for a sneeze, a cough, or to wipe my glasses. Thanks dad!
I still carry keys, a pocketknife, a pocket watch (sentimental reasons), a coin purse. Have been considering to start carrying a handkerchief. I sure do miss the Sunday newspaper.
Deck of playing cards were very common and lots of people didn't leave home without it. What if you and a friend or even meeting new people wanna play crazy 8 or go fish or any other card game to pass the time.
My daughter is about to graduate high school and she keeps a deck of cards and Uno cards in her backpack. She and her friends play at lunch time. They've been doing that since middle school. 😊
How about the rubber change purse? Used to put loose change inside and when you squeezed the opposite ends it would open in the middle so you could get the coins you needed.
I leave the house every single day with a full set of keys for the car, house, office, post office box, safe deposit box, and etc. I carry a checkbook with some credit cards in my back pocket. I carry cash, change, lip balm, a pen, and a pocket knife in my front pocket. I always wear a watch. I'm required by my work to carry a cell phone all the time, otherwise I probably wouldn't.
Well since my phone personalizes ads based on its constant monitoring and record keeping of my private life, I'll probably go back to "the old way" instead of paying $1,300 for a new big brother device every few years.
I definitely have replaced my notepad and pen though, in favor of notes on my smartphone. But I still use a notepad and pen at home for some reason! And I still know at least one person who makes sure to have a flask whenever they go out to a movie!
I love my old pocket knife had until the 90’s being Mexican American I was always profiled and would often get stopped by cops while skateboarding and they called it a weapon, although my other friends carried one but it was just boys being boys to them
The guy that was all dressed up with a gold watch and chain was what my grandmother called a "dude." She even used it as a verb; somebody all dressed up was "duded up."
Still carry keys, a knife, wear a watch, carry change & cash & gum. I'm old, but still savvy enough to watch Recollection Road on youtube.
I've carried the same pocket knife for over 30 yrs..Im 66..go to goodwill just to look at the stuff we used..

Is it an analog watch? That's cool if it is.😀
Same. I was brought up as a gentleman and no gentleman would be caught in public without these items.

I remember when cig machines gave out a pack of matches with the purchase. Mom's purse was like a survival kit, if you needed it, she had it! lol

Half a roll of lifesavers always seemed to be in my pocket besides the other things already mentioned.
I too thought about a pocket conb and also chapstick
Even being a millennial, as a kid, I always used to and still carry a notepad, a pen, a stick of gum, and change. As I am getting older, I still carry around a flask, a pocket knife, and a hankerchief. I used to smoke, too, so a Zippo and a pack of cigarettes were on my person, as well.
That one line "plastic credit cards had us believing we had more money than we actually did" sums up why we our a trillion $ in debt today. Debt = loss of freedom. Exactly what the govt wants.
As Always, Just Fantastic, I Look Forward To Your Channel. Happy Weekend.
The world was more visceral, more real back then.
Beamens Teaberry was and still is my favorite gum. Anyone remember Dentyne gum?😁
Yep I was chewing some the other day.
"...liquid courage." 😂😅
Great episode. Thank you Recollection Road!
I carry almost every one of those items every day! I don’t carry gum in my pocket but, it is in the car!
I like it that way! 👍🏼😊
I read where a lot of stores are going to stop taking checks.
Uh, we had Mastercard, American Express, BankAmericard (later became VISA) and store specific charge cards way before 'portable' phones and tech came out. We also had gas charge cards. Credit cards have been around since the 1950's.
Absolutely everyone had a Sears credit card too.
Dinners Club
my dad wore a watch for nearly 40 years from learning to tell time in elementary school until he was nearly 50 years old
So very Grateful to be a Baby Boomer 😊 Best of times b4 Social Media. I feel like I dodged a Cultural Bullet
Amen
Yeah
Beginning of Gen x here, I’m so glad I grew up in the 70s & 80s, good times….
As a kid, I loved ironing their clean hankerchief.
He came to me with his hat in his hand. This usually told you that the person needed something.
You can add hair comb,
Fountain pen in a shirt protector ,
Tic tacs,
Sunglasses,
chapstick
Used to smack my Marlboro box against my palm to condense the tobacco and carry them around in my pocket tee shirt.
Did that with my Kools
The soft pack was good because you could roll it up in your sleeve like James Dean.
Newspaper ink back then was also very useful for making Silly Putty print transfers! I don't know what kids today can still do if they have it!
You used to see people reading newspapers on the train, but not anymore. In fact, there are no longer newspaper boxes at the train station
I love your 🎥 videos! 👍
I remember in the 90s, carrying a beeper/pager. And some people had a beeper chain similar to a pocket watch chain!
I still carry keys a small notebook and pen.And not only 1 but 2 knives
One thing I never carried around when I was younger that I won't go anywhere without now...Glasses! I like to see
I remember my dad had one of those small soft leather cases that held all his keys.
Mine too. Actually a good idea so your keys weren’t jabbing you in the leg.
Used to have a little calendar card to carry in wallet that had like 6 years on it.
Wow! I forgot about those.
Well since my phone personalizes ads based on its constant monitoring and record keeping of my private life, I'll probably go back to "the old way" instead of paying $1,300 for a new big brother device every few years.
I have never paid over $250 for a phone and they do everything I need to do....and more
Hear, hear!
Always carried a pocket knife and a Zippo lighter ! Keys of course !
I definitely have replaced my notepad and pen though, in favor of notes on my smartphone. But I still use a notepad and pen at home for some reason! And I still know at least one person who makes sure to have a flask whenever they go out to a movie!
I love my old pocket knife had until the 90’s being Mexican American I was always profiled and would often get stopped by cops while skateboarding and they called it a weapon, although my other friends carried one but it was just boys being boys to them
Wonderful memories
The guy that was all dressed up with a gold watch and chain was what my grandmother called a "dude." She even used it as a verb; somebody all dressed up was "duded up."
