Great vid. Just a tip. Sliding an old bearing cap with open ends against the ring gear in the starter hole is a much better way to hold the flywheel while you torque it up. It locks in better and spreads the loading over a lager area also doesn't stress the thin metal of the clutch housing, which can be chipped/damaged very easily.

Couple of tips from the UK if I may?
    1. Before assembling all these parts its worth just taking the flywheel, use some fine lapping paste (used for lapping in valves in the head) and smear round the tapered end of the crankshaft, slide on the flywheel and gently rotate back and forth to finely match the two tapered faces. This makes for a better and tighter overall fit.
    2. @ 06:00 we put the pressure plate straps on which you show @ 08:38 (but without the diaphragm) to hold all three components together, then slide the assembly over the crankshaft and locate it all with the offset locking plate. When everything is torqued up remove the straps. Fitting the diaphragm is easier because everything is already lined up.
And a 'Wok'? Its a clutch cover ....lol

Of the four Mini engines, I like this 850cc unit. I made it out by the pressed steel type tappets (rockers in the US) which my Mk 1 Mini had. Just a quaint little motor for a cute little car.

You may also find you have oil and coolent leaks seeing as you painted the mating surfaces as soon as the paint warms up and shinks it will leak

Thanks for the heads up. I will keep my eyes peeled for any issues.

Hi we’ve had to rebuild our engine again after something got into the bores and scored to wall :( We’re just about to put the pistons in but want to make sure everything is clean. Any ways to properly deep clean the pistons before installing them into the bores so we don’t have the same problems as before? Thanks! p.s. great video series great tips along the way👍

Personally when I do a rebuild like this I always bring my pistons and internal parts (not including bearings) to a local machine shop and have them run through the parts washer. It's the only way I personally feel comfortable with the "level of clean". 👍

Classic Mini DIY Ok that’s great, I’m only 15 so it’s definitely a learning curve with such an old engine but hopefully the engine will be done soon and running after August! Thanks for your help really appreciate it 👍

Make sure you install the piston rings correctly, and the right way up - #1 and #2 should have markings. The oil ring should also be installed properly, especially the three piece type. I am guessing your oil ring protruded out on engine warm up and scored the cylinder wall. It is better to use a ring expander tool, makes installation easy and to grip the conrod in a soft jawed vice. DO NOT break the rings, they are sold in sets and are pricey.

You forgot the 7/16 LOCK NUT on the clutch adjustment bolt.. ( the bolt which had the WEIRD spacer on ).. IF it winds out.. the throw out bearing will touch and burn out :(

Thanks for the heads up. I’ll call it out when I put the engine in and attach the clutch slave. I appreciate the tip. 👍🏼

I really don't like that paint all over the gasket surface. It looks very poor

Should any grease/lubricant be put on the splines of the clutch disk ?

Hey Chole Doesn't your clutch have 6 springs under the diaphragm? 8:47 in this video?? It was extremely difficult to compress those on my 59 mini.

Haven't you got the plastic disc that covers the main clutch seal

    • @classicminidiy
      @classicminidiy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

That's a verto only part. Pre-verto does not use that plastic disc.
