Just to keep up with Ford, all of the GM makes had to alter their cars for '86 which they would use for 1987 prior to the downsize for 1988 and the beginning of the restrictor plate era. Chevy and Pontiac added the sloped rear window to both the Monte Carlo and the Grand Prix while Buick went with the LeSabre GN to replace the 81-85 Regal GN and Oldsmobile went with the Delta 88 GN to replace the 81-85 Cutlass but the '87 T-Bird, especially Bill Elliott and Davey Allison were hard to beat on the Superspeedways

The way it was...so many great drivers...this was peak years imo...quite a few no longer with us... announcers included...glad I was able to be a fan during these years.
After looking at the 1987 Cars on iRacing, I have sooo much more respect how these drivers raced in that era. The speeds were incredible. The cars handled like a boat in the corners. You had to have balls of steel to even make a safe lap around Talladega or Daytona..let alone race for a win.

Really? Go back and look at the starting lineup. Tell me how many you heard of racing at the end 1992 in either of the two main existing series at the time?! I'll tell you. 17 of 41. Of those, 1 retired at the end of the season, two more of these in races in their careers. Another had to retire due to carbon monoxide poisoning from these old cars. And no, I am not even counting two more of those that died in 1993. Congrats!!!
Racing is still good but now you have too many other entertainment options. People that were big fans back then were really into it more than now. It just felt more important back then to race fans. It was cheap enough to attend, drivers were more accessible to fans and teams had more community interaction because of sponsors. Racing is more competitive now but Nascar was all in all more fun back then.
When you go back and watch these old unrestricted superspeedway races and compare it today, my initial thought always is that it's a miracle more drivers weren't killed. Very little regard for safety, 210mph...the cars handled like boats, tracks were much more bumpy, its just unreal.
They put safety in the drivers hands more back then. That's why so many guys took issue with Earnhardt and his knock around style. That got people seriously injured or killed back then. All the drivers who imitate that now just wreck cars or win but guys dont get hurt like they used to.
Arguably the fastest race ever in Nascar (212 mph) before the restrictions start to take place ever since, thanks to Bobby's infamous catch fence crash.
The year before in the 1986 Winston 500, they ran the fastest average speed for any 500 mile race. IIRC, in the 1997 spring race at Talladega, the entire race ran without a caution.
In the mid 80s, Junior Johnson had two Budweiser Chevrolets for Darrell Waltrip and Neil Bonnett. In 1984, they were painted similar but in 1985 and 1986, Neil Bonnett's car was mostly red and Darrell Waltrip's was red and white.
I mean, some people would insist it stopped being NASCAR when they stopped being production cars. Sometimes they forget they stopped being production cars in the mid-60s.
As they go through the introductions, just the first 7 rows, are packed with some of my all time favorite drivers....all legends. This era was peak NASCAR for me. I was 16 years old watching this race. I stuck with Nascar up through about 2012... and just couldn't take it any more. It just started feeling like they abandoned the fans, in search of new fans. I plan on giving Daytona a shot this coming year, we will see how it goes

@Michael Benedict The fastest car should win, but it's perfectly reasonable to ensure things are reasonably competitive. Having a rules package designed to maintain competitive racing helps with keeping a category of racing appealing to teams. Both in production car racing and silhouette car racing if a given platform or drivetrain comes to dominate it will often result in other teams losing interest. Fans start losing interest too and eventually the series collapses unless it draws up new rules before the collapse. I don't think anyone wants a break-out penalty for racing too fast, they just like to see a broader pool have some hope of getting a good finish. It's a lot easier to get sponsor money when you're able to finish well and you're able to spend less on development if certain parts are spec pieces.

Which means from that point on, every car should have restrictor place to keep the speed less than 200 MPH (321 Km/h), and many drivers at the time were unhappy about that change which creates the new era of crash mayhem: the big crash chain if more than 10 drivers are running altogether, becoming riskier to choose and having higher patience to get first.
I doubt the footage would exist either. It would’ve been far worse than the Le Mans disaster. I mean that would’ve been a joke compared to the thousands that would’ve lost their lives if that car went into the stands. I don’t know how we made it to 1987 without trying to fix it someway. And it still isn’t fixed. Restrictor plates suck. I’d like to see what they could design to let them go this fast again. The need to put bigger roof flaps on and then maybe they could run this fast again

I wouldn't say I was a die hard NASCAR fan, and I'm certain what I'm about to type doesn't mean much, but I watched enough to remember Petty was my favorite driver. Regarding the accident that tore the fence apart, why was this so pivotal in changing racing speeds? That accident, while horrifying at the time, has been repeated over and over (many years later, one driver who wasn't going anywhere near that fast hit a fence and got decapitated?). How is 190 mph any less volatile than Davey Allison's average 208 mph in one lap? Watching this again after all these years reminded me of the excitement and thrill of such high speed events. I'm wondering if NASCAR, without its limitations, would be racing at maybe 215 by now? Maybe Talledega could've been rebuilt to have a bigger straightaway for higher speeds? There have been many driver deaths since the fence incident at this race. Throw out the restricting plates and let speed be the deciding factor of racing.
What Bob Jenkins didn't tell you was that Darryl Waltrip's windshield was broken by the crankshaft out of Bobby Allison's engine. It hit the window and post on the driver's side.
So basically Bobby Allison's crankshaft failed before blowing the left rear tire, which were Bias-Ply cause radials were not used on the plate tracks until 1989, causing him to blow over into the fence and I know Harold Kinder was very lucky that Bobby missed hitting the flag stand after he hit the fence.
Billy Elliot broke the all-time NASCAR speed record during this cup, reaching an insane 212mph in his Ford Thunderbird It's still the record to this very day
Unofficially, Rusty Wallace in a equipment test for then Cup series sponsor Sprint in the early 2000's ran close to 230mph in a Gen4 superspeedway car.
no way be happy with what you get these are really fast cars and are about 4 to 5 times faster then your cars that are on the road that people drive on normal roads these are special cars for tracks only
What then do you recommend when one of these cars, or multiple cars, lifts up and either completely flies through the catchfence at those speeds (which, unrestricted would mirror a small aircraft) or possibly even lifts up and flies over the catchfence into the grandstand?
No, think about it....Nascar never let unrestricted plate races go under their name again but no one was killed let alone sent to the ER....Nascar over reacted for an incident that THEIR own technology aka the catch fence WORKED! It worked back then, if you make it taller and add an additional and raise the stands and back em up a bit, then people would actually be safe and able to see the whole track cause I've been to tracks before and the front seating is hard to see the whole track and what's going on.
Heck no youre not alone. Remember Wallace ran unrestricted and averaged 228? Alone? I still think the cars would be safe to run around 210 today. I remember when Daytona was repaved a few years ago and they were hitting those speeds in practice before nascar slowed them down.

Five fans were injured in the Bobby Allison wreck on lap 22 none were life threatening though one fan did lose an eye from flying debris. I don't know if this is true but I have heard that the debris Allison ran over that blew his right rear tire was a glass beer bottle that a drunken fan threw onto the track from the stands.

What confuses me is that now they race with a certain package that forces everyone to race in a pack and at lower speeds at Dega and Tona. However they are still going a little over 200 mph. So why introduce speed restrictions if you’re aren’t going that much slower? Plus the pack racing always results in multi car pile ups which owner and drivers hate. In retrospect, the restrictor plate is one of the most insane over reactions to this crash. I understand it was still the 80s and safety was not a priority, but with the modern safety features I say let them go all out.
Completely agree. With radial tires, deflectors, taller, stronger catch fencing, SAFER barrier, HANS stronger rollcage/safety cell they really should be let go using max engine power. It will spread the field out more but you'll have less accidents and lest cost when there's a wreck and the engines will be screaming unrestricted to 9k+rpms. a 225mph lap of Talladega would be something very special!
I don't get why they went with a plate instead of just mandating teams build a V6 based on the V8. Maybe the goal was also to change the powerband by reducing breathing instead of displacement?
This changed racing forever...sadly but necessary...glad I was able to see Superspeedway racing before but it is what it is now...can't have cars going into stands.
Yeah buddy. That was gonna be something special for year's. I owned a school bus RV painted the orange and black colors with 28 on one side and my best friend had Earnhardt #3 on the other side. We was in the infield at Darlington every year

I remember a tale that my Dad told me once, don't really know how tall that tale was cause I saw no need to verify it. Something about buying tires from Sears on Friday, qualifying on Saturday, racing on Sunday and returning the tires to Sears on Monday. Always thought was a great story so I believed it and will never forget it. Sure it's just a story but do not really care, no good stories coming from current Nascar.

the fact they have 20 rows of spectators next to the track is why they put on plates. Take those rows out and put up another fence further away from the track and they are good to go. Same with Daytona. People don't need to be that close to the track. You can't see shit down there anyway.

To add more context, he lost his job with ESPN in 1989 following an on-air dispute during one of their "Thunder" broadcasts (I've never seen the footage). He did various ASA events during the 90s before his death in 2000.
@@MrChristopherHaas Larry got demoted to USAC pretty much by 1989 due to Benny and Ned Jarrett coming on board (some crew chief also announced in 1988,) as well as new management at ESPN. I guess they just didn't like him. Anyways he was announcing a race in 1989 with a former USAC racer Steve Chassey who despised one of their top racers Rick Vogler from their racing days. Vogler spun someone out which made Chassey got upset about it and he called him out for him doing it in a very blunt and against centered way.. which ended up pissing Nuber off. They were quiet in the booth for a little bit (read on an old forum post that they almost brawled over it,) but they finished out the broadcast albeit very snarky to each other especially Larry. Chassey had to go on ESPN the next week and appolgize for it.. before they fired him over it. Nuber himself wasn't offered an extension and became freelance. Nuber was a fanboy of Vogler and even for a time worked for Jeff Gordon.. people accused him of bias in favor of both. Chassey called him out it. Chassey himself years later admitted he regretted doing it in terms of losing his announcing career but he didn't mind doing that to Larry for his fanboyisim.. ouch lol.
Yes, the best lap is a 42 second lap from bill elliot at talledega because restrictor plates never existed. But a usual talledega time would be 49 seconds because of restrictor plates.
This was pretty good all they would have to do to slow them down and improve this is put a ton of drag on the cars and open up the front of the cars so the leader won’t get as far away as you could here. That was the only problem with superspeedway racing the leader would get so far away.
So why was this the crash that brought about the speed restrictions? Tyres can let go at any speed.. whether its 190 or 206-209 makes little difference... you're still guna have a very bad day if it happens!

I wouldn't say I was a die hard NASCAR fan, and I'm certain what I'm about to type doesn't mean much, but I watched enough to remember Petty was my favorite driver. Regarding the accident that tore the fence apart, why was this so pivotal in changing racing speeds? That accident, while horrifying at the time, has been repeated over and over (many years later, one driver who wasn't going anywhere near that fast hit a fence and got decapitated?). How is 190 mph any less volatile than Davey Allison's average 208 mph in one lap?
Watching this again after all these years reminded me of the excitement and thrill of such high speed events. I'm wondering if NASCAR, without its limitations, would be racing at maybe 215 by now? Maybe Talledega could've been rebuilt to have a bigger straightaway for higher speeds?
There have been many driver deaths since the fence incident at this race. Throw out the restricting plates and let speed be the deciding factor of racing.
Jeff Gordon averaged 206 mph in qualifying at Michigan 10 years ago. Definitely those cars would have averaged over 220 mph at Talladega
What Bob Jenkins didn't tell you was that Darryl Waltrip's windshield was broken by the crankshaft out of Bobby Allison's engine. It hit the window and post on the driver's side.
So basically Bobby Allison's crankshaft failed before blowing the left rear tire, which were Bias-Ply cause radials were not used on the plate tracks until 1989, causing him to blow over into the fence and I know Harold Kinder was very lucky that Bobby missed hitting the flag stand after he hit the fence.

no way be happy with what you get these are really fast cars and are about 4 to 5 times faster then your cars that are on the road that people drive on normal roads these are special cars for tracks only
What then do you recommend when one of these cars, or multiple cars, lifts up and either completely flies through the catchfence at those speeds (which, unrestricted would mirror a small aircraft) or possibly even lifts up and flies over the catchfence into the grandstand?
Yep just like raise the grandstands and prolly reinforce them a bit more

No, think about it....Nascar never let unrestricted plate races go under their name again but no one was killed let alone sent to the ER....Nascar over reacted for an incident that THEIR own technology aka the catch fence WORKED! It worked back then, if you make it taller and add an additional and raise the stands and back em up a bit, then people would actually be safe and able to see the whole track cause I've been to tracks before and the front seating is hard to see the whole track and what's going on.

Heck no youre not alone. Remember Wallace ran unrestricted and averaged 228? Alone? I still think the cars would be safe to run around 210 today. I remember when Daytona was repaved a few years ago and they were hitting those speeds in practice before nascar slowed them down.

Five fans were injured in the Bobby Allison wreck on lap 22 none were life threatening though one fan did lose an eye from flying debris. I don't know if this is true but I have heard that the debris Allison ran over that blew his right rear tire was a glass beer bottle that a drunken fan threw onto the track from the stands.
Darrell Waltrip said the Crankshaft from Bobby's Car hit his Windshield.
Bobby’s engine blew and the crank pulley flew off of his engine engine then he ran over it cutting his tire down.

What confuses me is that now they race with a certain package that forces everyone to race in a pack and at lower speeds at Dega and Tona. However they are still going a little over 200 mph. So why introduce speed restrictions if you’re aren’t going that much slower? Plus the pack racing always results in multi car pile ups which owner and drivers hate. In retrospect, the restrictor plate is one of the most insane over reactions to this crash. I understand it was still the 80s and safety was not a priority, but with the modern safety features I say let them go all out.

Completely agree. With radial tires, deflectors, taller, stronger catch fencing, SAFER barrier, HANS stronger rollcage/safety cell they really should be let go using max engine power. It will spread the field out more but you'll have less accidents and lest cost when there's a wreck and the engines will be screaming unrestricted to 9k+rpms. a 225mph lap of Talladega would be something very special!
I don't get why they went with a plate instead of just mandating teams build a V6 based on the V8. Maybe the goal was also to change the powerband by reducing breathing instead of displacement?

Yeah buddy. That was gonna be something special for year's. I owned a school bus RV painted the orange and black colors with 28 on one side and my best friend had Earnhardt #3 on the other side. We was in the infield at Darlington every year

I remember a tale that my Dad told me once, don't really know how tall that tale was cause I saw no need to verify it. Something about buying tires from Sears on Friday, qualifying on Saturday, racing on Sunday and returning the tires to Sears on Monday. Always thought was a great story so I believed it and will never forget it. Sure it's just a story but do not really care, no good stories coming from current Nascar.

the fact they have 20 rows of spectators next to the track is why they put on plates. Take those rows out and put up another fence further away from the track and they are good to go. Same with Daytona. People don't need to be that close to the track. You can't see shit down there anyway.

He died of a stroke in 2000
To add more context, he lost his job with ESPN in 1989 following an on-air dispute during one of their "Thunder" broadcasts (I've never seen the footage). He did various ASA events during the 90s before his death in 2000.

@@MrChristopherHaas Larry got demoted to USAC pretty much by 1989 due to Benny and Ned Jarrett coming on board (some crew chief also announced in 1988,) as well as new management at ESPN. I guess they just didn't like him. Anyways he was announcing a race in 1989 with a former USAC racer Steve Chassey who despised one of their top racers Rick Vogler from their racing days. Vogler spun someone out which made Chassey got upset about it and he called him out for him doing it in a very blunt and against centered way.. which ended up pissing Nuber off. They were quiet in the booth for a little bit (read on an old forum post that they almost brawled over it,) but they finished out the broadcast albeit very snarky to each other especially Larry. Chassey had to go on ESPN the next week and appolgize for it.. before they fired him over it. Nuber himself wasn't offered an extension and became freelance. Nuber was a fanboy of Vogler and even for a time worked for Jeff Gordon.. people accused him of bias in favor of both. Chassey called him out it.
Chassey himself years later admitted he regretted doing it in terms of losing his announcing career but he didn't mind doing that to Larry for his fanboyisim.. ouch lol.

Yes, the best lap is a 42 second lap from bill elliot at talledega because restrictor plates never existed. But a usual talledega time would be 49 seconds because of restrictor plates.

This was pretty good all they would have to do to slow them down and improve this is put a ton of drag on the cars and open up the front of the cars so the leader won’t get as far away as you could here. That was the only problem with superspeedway racing the leader would get so far away.
All you gotta do is decrease the banking in the turns so that they will have to lay off the throttle instead of flooring it
