- This is an odd one from early 1970s Met. Stereo sound, looks like it was meant to be telecast but wasn't. I saw a bit from the Pagliacci with Richard Tucker that followed, but couldn't find the full performance.
November 5, 1974
Conductor - John Nelson
Santuzza - Grace Bumbry
Turiddu - Franco Tagliavini
Alfio - Anselmo Colzani
Mama Lucia - Batyah Godfrey Ben-David
Lola - Joann Grillo - เพลง
1:08.45 is a “ Callasian” acting moment for Bumbry. What a talent!
This upgraded sound and video quality are wonderful! Thank you so much for posting this.
I doubt they would have telecast a performance with a non-star Turriddu, but the Met wisely knew they had better try out live taping that would be on a higher level than previous attempts. Of course they finally did an actual telecast with the 1977 La Boheme. Thanks for this interesting video. A big problem back then was lighting at a level that worked both for the audience and for TV.
Some pretty good singing from Bumbry.
The voice is seamless from bottom to top. It's a lot of big singing but she seems tireless. Brava!
Thankyou i love these old met productions
This is just the previous production. I saw Ildiko Komlosi sing Santuzza in this production only ten years ago.
I did not realize they did telecasts in 1974
They didn't, it was never aired, but as someone else commented here, it's likely an experiment
Bumbry is in spectacular voice here
Yes really outstanding.
G;day to you, a big thank you for this!

Thanks could you put the segments from Pagliaxci on if possible? Wasn't it bernstein conducting,?
I can only find this bit:

That's all there is. Bernstein never conducted Pág.
Bumbry is an insincere actress but she knows how to sing this music and sounds very good.
???
@@BellaFirenze she's not convincing as an actress to my eyeballs
To me she is a very sincere and effective actress. Both opinions are deeply subjective.
Grace Bumbry was not an insincere actor. Her voice and her acting were outstanding.
I see what you mean - old fashioned black-and-white film acting with over dramatic hand gestures. (she has incredibly long arms and legs) Nevertheless I find her very sincere in what she does - she feels the emotions. Her physical gestures are just not what we are used to seeing in films and stage.
Once upon a time when the Met was the greatest opera house in the world. Not anymore thanks to the woke fool Gelb....
I could not say it better.
Pity the Met!
Peter gelb ruin the met with a mature productions that would be seen on Broadway I remover the good old days T old opera house with the great richard tucker and tebaldi
@@Malcolm-bh6kyagree. Case in point: why bringing a Broadway superstar such as Kelli O’Hara to the Met while leaving out from the Met so many operatic superstars ?
The Broadway crowd will never move to the Met and the Met crowd will never buy into it.
Horrible.

Did you see Kelli? She was excellent. And, yes, her being in it did sell tickets that wouldn't otherwise have been sold
What a silly statement. How has "woke" ruined the Met?
