- The play-caller on perhaps the greatest defensive unit in league history, Jack Lambert was much more than just an intimidator. His intelligence and athleticism gave him skills in coverage that had never been seen before at the Middle Linebacker position, and he was a tackling machine against the run. He certainly made it a point to intimidate his opponents if he could, but it was always backed up by his play on the field. He racked up 6 First-Team All-Pro selections in his 11 year career with the Steelers, as well as earning Defensive Player of the Year Honors in 1976, and spearheaded the Steel Curtain to 4 Super Bowl victories in the decade.

Rocky Bleier was wounded in the left thigh by an enemy rifle bullet when his platoon was ambushed in a rice paddy. While he was down, an enemy grenade landed nearby after bouncing off a fellow soldier, he tried to leap over it and it exploded sending shrapnel into his lower right leg. His right foot was severely damaged in the blast as well.
In 1976, Rocky Bleier rushed for over 1000 yards in the National Football League!
That was one of the most dominant defences in the NFL history.

One of the most? Just look at the 76 team. Bradshaw is out and go on to win the last 10 by shutting out 5 with only one TD given up in the last 8 or 9. They could have won 3 straight SBs if Franco &Rocky don't get hurt in the game the week before AFC Championship. The criminals would have another conspiracy theory had they lost again.
Jack Lambert personified the Steelers Iron Curtain defense of the 70s. This man played 100 percent every game and hit the opposition with a no holds barred attitude. And when anyone tried to mess around with any of the Steelers players Lambert instantly stood in their face!! God bless you #58 you have left your legacy well in the Steelers dynasty!!💪
Lambert and his method of tackling should be taught and be made the standard for tackling at all levels of football. Notice he never leads with his helmet or tackles with his head down. Lambert is standing almost straight up and tackles high but rarely around the head. He wraps his arms around the player and muscles him to the ground because his legs never stop driving forward. It's an absolute clinic on how to tackle properly without anyone getting injured or worse.

Totally agree with you. The last 20 whatever years, they all looking for a big hit., not to tackle. How many times you see some dolt try for a big hit (leading with their head) and totally miss or the offensive guy bounces off them for more yardage?

What surprised me was after a interception he was looking to hand off to a teammate before taking the ball and running. The other thing was how easily he came down when tackled or run out of bounds??

I was born in 1987, and as a 7year old who just moved to Pittsburgh with my mom and sister from DC. I didn’t know one thing about football let alone the great Pittsburgh Steelers. Someone had a tape with a couple 70’s Steelers games, and the pics of him have always stood out. And I immediately fell in love with his passion and grit. Since that afternoon in my friends basement, I have been a diehard Steeler Fan!!!! And it’s because a lot of what I saw from jack that day.
I was born in 78. I never saw him play live. Been a fan since 1990.
I saw him play, I'll never forget this defense. It made me love football. And number 58, Jack lambert, aka count Dracula in cleats, man he was my favorite player. The man man who said. If these quarter backs don't wanna get roughed up, you should put dresses on em'. Makes sense though, come on this is football ladies. Bart Starr, and Johnny unitis didn't get no roughing the passer calls when dick butkus and Ray nitschke was bashing their way through every player. The toughest of the tough there. Don't be a pussy, and fuckin ' play football. Damn I miss the good Ole days when sports had grit. Something you youngsters of today, sadly missed out on.

A couple things really stood out in those highlights. His tackling technique is pretty much textbook. He rarely hit helmet to helmet but he wrapped the ball carrier up and they didn't have a chance to bounce off. He was also really good dropping back in pass defense.
I was just about to comment on that he was a respectful tackler in most cases. In this video he seemed to go to the waist or roll you over to wear the person tackled landed on him first...or wrapped the legs. Completely text book.
Most inside linebackers tend to have the best form when it comes to proper tackling. Lambert, Singletary, Butkus all of em had good technique. Safeties are the ones usually flying downhill leading with there head and shoulder pads
One of the very VERY few times you will see Earl Campbell being tackled ONE ON ONE..
Definitely one of the BEST middle linebackers I've EVER seen play professional football.

He'd be suspended for the season by Week Five. The NFL of 2022 is practically "flag football" compared to the 70's and 80's. Lambert. Tatum. Lanier. Lott. Too Tall Jones. Greene. Harvey Martin. L.C. Greenwood. Elvin Bethea. Alan Page.
Their sort of physical play would NEVER be tolerated in the Roger Goodell Flag Football League.

Only Dick Butkus was a shade better! The Fact that Butkus played on losing teams his whole career and still was the NFLs most feared player. That gives him the edge. Lambert had 6 future HOF players around him and he was the Anchor of the Steel Curtain. That speaks volumes too!
He wasn't really underrated at the time he was playing... everyone knew how great he was- straight up brutality was how he treated anyone with the damn ball...I agree that too many people don't know the history of the game, therefore forget about Lambert. That much is true. He was like a real life Rambo- him vs 50-100 fighters, I feel sorry for them💪🙏
Best football player I've ever seen in over 50 years of playing \watching. He elevated the whole team with his intensity.
I'd say, at least, top five. Remember though, this was waaay before rule changes that opened up offenses as today. Defenses back then could spike qb into turf with no flag! He didn't have to drop back in pass coverages...and he only played alongside about 5 or 6 other HOF on defense. As a Bears fan, that's how Bears lost only game of season because as great as their defense was etc., well, their weakness at linebackers weren't good at pass coverage. Thanks for nothing, Dan Marino! Just saying.

Jack Lambert was the epitome of what a linebacker should be. I remember watching an interview from the 70s, and when asked about the roughing the passer rule, he commented that he thought QBs should wear dresses. I LOVED it! 😄
Jack Lambert was not only the face of the vaunted Steel Curtain, he was and is my favorite Pittsburgh Steeler of all time. I was fortunate to grow up watching him dominate his opponents. He was a three down HOF linebacker who never took a shift off his entire career. He was the complete package.
My favorite Steeler ever. Jack was tough as nails. Gave his all every time out there. Showed leadership and took no guff from anyone. Including the refs !!

Mike Tomlin needs to take this video, edit out the interceptions, and make his defense watch these tackles EVERY DAY! Because that's what's really been missing from the Pittsburgh Steelers since even the Bill Cowher days: wrap 'em up, you ain't goin' nowhere tackling. And every member of the original Steel Curtain tackled like this. I miss it, I really do.

While I am in complete support of the protections that are in place today in the NFL, I must admit that the 70's and 80's were the greatest time of football in the United States. It was truly incredible. These men had so much talent, determination and strength. Football in that era was for the working man, the every-man. Today, it strikes me as for commercialism and the wealthy or at least the nearly wealthy. Everything and everyone makes money off these guys today. Back in the day, the small time bars and greasy spoons filled up to watch our Steel Town Steelers. On Sundays, everyone was ONE gang of rag-tags, and we all loved it. Being working-class was a badge of honor, and our Pittsburgh Steelers were our ICONS of representation.

As a 'Burgher that graduated HS in 1975 I can honestly say watching the Steelers, and Jack L in particular, was one of the most enjoyable things I did in my entire life. Even when opposing teams were leading, when the camera panned the opponents bench, you could see the fear in the players eyes, knowing they were probably going to lose the game. The Steel Curtain was AWESOME!
Every time I watch this monster of a football player, this ferocious linebacker, I think about Dick Butkus. There is no doubt in my mind when Dick Butkus retired Jack Lambert got his spirit. Truly a great football player.

The thing that always amazed me about Jack Lambert is how few ball handlers could shake him or make much forward progress once he really got a hand on them. One of the surest tacklers I ever saw play the game.
Nothing but clean, effective tackles from this guy. Must be a lost art. Quick feet in the backfield getting to the ball and making interceptions. He was a machine.

As I Grew into adulthood, always thought he was 230 240 lb. Playing at 205 lb and be that devastating of a hitter is mind blowing. I never saw him get run over. Among all the stars on that team, he was one of the brightest

I grew up in Pittsburgh during the 60s and 70s and Jack Lambert and Joe Green got most of the attention but I’ll tell you the real terror of that defensive line was Dwight White. A monster.
The Steel Curtain was the best defence of all time, get by Mean Joe Green, you had Jack Lambert, get by Lambert you had Mel Blount. 86 Bears had the greatest 1 season of defensive football, but over a 5yr span no one was better than the Steel Curtain.

Watching Lambert making these plays is like watching a Lion running down a Hyena. There was just NO escaping him. A one man force at that position. Someone needs to show this video to every defense in the NFL ( mainly our own ). Why ? Because THAT’S HOW YOU TACKLE in this league. WRAP UP !!!!

my buddy and I would call Mr. Lambert “the wrapper” - I’d recommend to many defensive players to view film and observe his tackling technique, notice how he wraps his arms around offensive player with the ball. He was very consistent; He's a Hall of Famer

There is a story that Jack Ham often told.
During the 4th quarter of a game, the Steelers were trying to make a key defensive stop. On a 3rd down and a couple yards, Joe Greene jumped offsides, giving the offense a 1st down. Back in the huddle, Lambert tore him out a new one, and the whole time Mean Joe Greene, one of the most feared players in the NFL at the time just stood there staring at his shoes. That is how intimidating Lambert was.
And that's how much respect he commanded, even within his own team.
Of course, the defining Jack Lambert moment was when he decked Cliff Harris of the Cowboys in Super Bowl X, after Steelers kicker Roy Gerela missed a FG, and Harris went over to taunt him. The video is on YT.
An all time great , Lambert was a middle linebacker who only weighed 230 pounds. A fearsome competitor .
He looked huge on the field. In person he was very tall but thin. The shoulder pads in the 70's made players look like monsters.

Jack Lambert and Ronnie Lott were my heroes when I played youth football in the early 80’s. Their beast mode attitude towards tackling motivated me to seek and destroy ball carriers when playing defense
Best linebacker to play the game. He was the only player I ever seen stand Earl Cambpell straight up one on one.
Notice every hit is clean, even by today's standards, no head hunting by Jack, just an insanely good nose for the ball and hard hits and great tackling. Elway was terrified of him in his rookie year. The list at the end failed to mention he is in the HOF, obviously.
