As a fellow martial artist that teaches how to protect yourself and be aware of your surroundings, I have come to accept that there is a lot of trash on the internet and TH-cam.
When you start training martial arts and can't pull off those techniques in real time you're told you haven't been training them long or hard enough. But as time goes on, some people start to realize maybe it's the technique that's the problem Your videos help people get to that awareness a whole lot sooner. Thank you!
I discovered right away that the techniques are just to be learning sequences and not exactly what's going to happen because every incident is different and everything that could happen going to happen so everything that's learned must always be modified.
Fighting is about fighting, training is about knowledge. Your opponent doesn't train so you are not training a technique to use it specifically, you are training to get discipline and understand a concept.
He speaks absolute truth. My favorite instructor made everything hurt. (There's a difference between hurt and injury). He would always say: whether you like it or not pain is your friend. It teaches you what to do, what not to do, and most importantly of all that you're still alive.
The best part of this is the delivery… he sounds like he’s preaching and his boy wants to laugh but he’s holding it in. Seriously though… he is talking the real. Feel like he came up with my instructor!!!
I was taught all these techniques by a well meaning sensei in Hapkido. He did, however, talk about modifying when necessary for the street. He would also add a kick or strike to these techniques as a distraction to take their mind off what your doing. For example, with the bear hug technique, he would stomp the foot first, then drop down. The choking technique, a quick slap while reaching across, maybe a backfist or punch. He said some instructors would use a loud kiai as a distraction then went on to say how wrong that was. His motto was, noise doesn't psyche a person mind, pain does. Not saying these are good techniques, I saw that eventually, but he did at least modify them to make them better. He would also say don't rely on one technique, learn to quickly flow from onwe technique to another. I am a black belt now and working on starting my own class, and I want it to be a bit more realistic and simple, a lot of the techniques I learned had way to many steps. You are speaking the truth though, glad i found your channel.
Love this had to sub the channel because the fact is people don’t train the way they used to! No heart no guts and no passion. Same thing I’ve been telling people is that most of what’s being shown now is not practical or real and as long as people keep training this way they will end up hurt. I acquired my black belt over 30 years ago I don’t talk about it to no one unless I’m talking to someone of your calibre and experience and even it’s from the aspect of I don’t know anything so I can learn from the person because the truth is you never stop learning therefore you never stop training Salute to all of you 🤜🏾🤚🏾
After over 50 years of training in martial arts, my realization is: Anyone doing a demo of any technique can make it work, if they are setting up and controlling the demo. Conversely, anyone doing a demo of any technique can show how it will fail, if they are setting up and controlling the demo. People don't attack or defend in slow motion. With distraction, timing and speed, techniques can work in real time that will not work in a demo. And it all too easy to show what you think doesn't work. It is harder to show something that will work, and cannot be countered. Because EVERY technique can be countered! Don't get self defense advice from the internet. Train under good instructors, learn what works for YOU, learn the counters to it, and the counters to the counters.
First, I love the humor/truth of it. So many out there do those exact techniques. I thank you too for the reminder to teachers, to never take the pack off.
As a ten year old in 1970 my oldest brother told me I was going to train with his instructor at a new location where he offered free classes in Goju (Urban style) karate. When you said workouts vs training that really really hit home with me. I felt dizzy tired, nauseous and in constant pain( but I had some physical deformity with my feet) but man I remember those classes. 😅
Much LOVE & RESPECT to you Prof. James, and Shihan Ken.. You gentlemen have always kept shit real!! Yeah, FINALLY the gloves come off!! Finally we can talk REAL $HIT!! And give these two the credit they deserve!! NO holding back!! You two have ALWAYS provided REAL $HIT training for REAL $HIT SCENARIO'S. The Vee Arnis Family will always be cutting edge as long as Professor James & Shihan Ken have the helm. Prof. Vee chose his successor well.. And it shows by the exponentially fast growth you have achieved in this space. Well deserved gent's.. Much respect and appreciation for the well thought out scenario's and methodologies addressing them. Blessings to you both . Ous!!
God Bless Professor David, you are so right. The way you practice is the way you play, self-defense is no different. What you put in, is what you put out, if you train like your really fighting for your life, your body's muscles remembers the tensions, the strain. And when you do it enough time it becomes 2nd nature, so if God willing it comes, but if one day you'll have to give someone a beat down, you'll move so quick, you won't have to think about it.
I like this, I used to go Kick-boxing, when I would ask my teacher about real stuff as well as levelling up. He wouldn’t give me a straight answer because he just wanted me to be in his sessions to train and make money off of me. Majority of the that individual spent a good amount of time just talking about crap not giving us a complete workout.
Practice makes permanent not perfect!!! I was told once that "you will never rise to the to the level of your expectations ,you will always fall to the depth of your training"
This was good, really good. Sadly, most won't listen to it or heed it. Most schools deal in volume and don't train real fighters anymore. Too easy to get a gun. Being good at anything requires dedication and time doing the work.
Absolutely I totally agree 100% Prof. James. I questioned this technique once because it wouldn't work and made no sense. I was told, "Don't worry we'll fix it at Black Belt" I was 7 belts away from Black.. Then at Black they complexly changed it.
Gentlemen.. These video's your making are indeed being shared by many. They are indeed an inspiration to many. And, most importantly, I know (myself included) they have saved many from severe harm and even possible death out in the streets. I look forward to the day (real soon) when I visit your school to partake in-person, the dynamic energy and wisdom within those walls. Blessings to you all on this feed. Priceless wisdom indeed!!! Ous!!
This video needs to be seen by all the fantasy self defense addict video watchers out there. The intensity of a real fight is not known by most. Fighting someone with a knife, high likelihood you're going to get cut even if you defend and avoid serious injury. But you might put them down with the right mindset and actions. Can you be aggressive? Can you practice self-offense? Learn from the teaching Prof. David is giving. Listen. Apply. Thank you David and Kenny.
Mad love n respect, sir! Complete injustice to teach people something or anything other than what they NEED in the REAL! Started with some Thai Kwon Do, till the instructor got on me about a spin n wheel kick! Said "I heard they develop this shit to kick people off of horses in wartime, and I aint never had issue with noone on a horse! Then primarily a boxer. Boxing doesnt get that garbage respect with different color belts, but even in boxing, dudes win a Walmart belt at every tournament for winning a 3 round amatuer bout. Anyway, real striking ain't till you sittin' n snappin' with some torque, like that sweet straight right to the chin you showed! Only needed to add some elbows, knees, and some holds I took from Hapkido/Jujitsu and Maui Thai. But, you said it, sir, GOTTA put THAT work in and make it all muscle memory. Its called SELF DEFENSE and its a crime when these decorated MASTERS teachin women, kids, shit, anyone some BS and send them OUT THERE believin they are safer! Like, how you disarm someone with a knife? You disable him! Love your energy and your message! First thing we teach these folk is "pull yer damn head out of the clouds, n know your environment! Vigilance and common sense alone keep most of these delusionals safer! I know YOU know that ol method called the KISS method! Keep it simple stupid! Throw all that flashy shit out the window ... BE FIRST if possible and send it with bad intentions. Expect The Unexpected ... shortest distance between two points? A straight line! And last, but not really, there ain't no rules out there! Represent, sir!
This is an excellent video showing the reality of knife defense. Someone who is in a rage will be stabbing you repetitively. Especially the ice pick swing coming from above, which is very difficult to intercept. In the dojo it's really child's play there is no pressure on the street its a life or death situation.
Oooh shit!😌 politicians wearing gis. This Prof said it. TRUTH!!-13 year olds getting black belts from the McDojo at the mall😞....Luv your truth Prof. 🙏🖖🙏
The Professor and Kenny should offer a special "gold' level training plan where if you have money and are too lazy to train they will come to your house and yell at you
You are absolutely right. In my dojo I've been asking myself this question all the time. Why am I the only one drenched in sweat 😂 everyone is so relaxed when they train
Yje second video I'm seeing, and am I impressed.... Real stuff.... Street cred fighting skills that only those defending themselves on the streets will understand...
I understand why this is so important to expose, as wrong information can end up in a tragic end. Please share this important information with everyone. Txs
A Blade is a contact weapon. If you get touched by it it cuts you and the Blade never stops moving? If you do not put something between the Bladed attacker and YOU then you will get eviscerated! Professor David James is right! Get smaller and find a way to get the attacker with the blade to over commit before you attempt a strike and disarm. If you can not find a obstacle then you need a shield at least (Chair..etc.)? Keep your arms turned in so that your wrist arteries do not get cut and becareful NOT to let them jab the knife into your shoulder Deltoid because that is where your Subclavian Artery is and it will also neutralize the arm as the Brachial Artery is there too! You are way behind the power curve when you are up aginst the knife or a Blade. Run if you can. I would. Get your Ham Shanks outta there! Professor David sorry about anything I said about OSS. I just thought it was just America and that what you do goes past Japanese Bowing IN and OUT Traditions and Ancestor worship. I believe no man is a Master over another Man and no man is Less either. I see you as objective and as teacher. I want to Honor a Man who has walked his path through time and space and found the loopholes to do Kung Fu...the Folding of Time and Space. Your Journey in Time and Space intersects with those who will listen. Great Suff Professor. I wish I could get to 2 to 3 hours of training, but that would kill me in my condition. I do simple stuff as best I can as I have a degenerative disease. I count more on weapons (Force Multipliers) than I do empty handed because I will not fool myself that I am young or in good health. I will not lie to myself. Thank you Professor David James as this will also remind some of us the energy we really have and not to cast the illusion that we are an Athlete.
People just need to be honest with what they're training for I remember everyone making fun of ty bo when it first came out......... I thought it was wonderful for what it was!! In fact, you guys speak and teach the same thing my instructor taught to me. I state this time and time again that the less flashy the moves and the more dirty the techniques are the more effective the technique will be. Less is more
I train in boxing and have trained in Krav Maga. I like to combine the 2. Keep it fast and simple. I just found your channel and it’s like fresh air. No BS. Love it. Subscribed. Thank you. Looking forward to watching more 👍🏼
I started martial arts training on a daily basis at age 13, and I'm 65 years old today, and I still train daily. I studied gymnastics in 1987, and my gymnastics teacher was also my martial arts instructor, and he told me a martial artist is only as good as the punch he can take. This is so true. I've seen many out of shape instructors with black belts and fat bellies. Their techniques were good, but all someone had to do was get a lucky punch in and it was all over. You are so right Professor David. You need to be in shape. Much love and respect to Professor David and Shihan Kenny.
Thank you very much for this very good video Sir 🙏 I totally agree with you, drills against unreal attackers and zero body conditioning and hard training have destroied the reason to exist for martial arts. Thanks God there'll always be wayshowers like you and, for those who want the real path, it's never too late to start again so choose a real fighting coach, train hard and repeat as many days per week as you can. The body does what the body knows🙏💪💪💪👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Something I have told guys for decades, if the person is quicker than you, you've had a bad day at the office. If they are good at cross cutting, you you.ve had a bad day at the office! Develop speed with technique!
One of Bruce lee philosophy which I treasure in the martial Arts is when he says the Aim of jeet kundo is simply to simplify..meaning if someone grabs you just punch and he will let go..but,most martial art schools always tell do this,do that, before actually defending yourself..
I’m never going to say you should stop training. You just have to train smarter. In no way am I going to, at the age I am, going back on the mat and do the rolls or take the falls I used to. I’ve seen to many practitioners with their bodies so beat up that if ever in confrontation their at a loss. So you have to be in condition but not stupidly. But the Professor is💯when he says beware of the fakes. Because if you try it on the streets 😢😢😢….😊
I totally agree with you I’m not in the most sure anymore I should be I’m 56 years old with two hip replacement and I’m not sure if I can still do it but I started much right when I was 16 years old until I was about 28
Hey Professor David James & Kenny, You Guys teach what CAN Save Your LIFE, I have Seen BLACK BELTS being given out to 9,10,11, and 12 years. I didn't think much about it until Someone said at those ages they may think they can beat a man and get seriously Hurt I have also seen a few Instructors they were to take a Body Mass Index Test there BE A whole lot of Fat VS Muscle on them than Muscle. I have been watching you since before I Saw the 10 Commandment of Self Defense. I wish I saw MORE instructor s like you and Kenny, I bet Those McDojo Masters Aren't teaching that crap they teach their Paying Student I will just leave you a quote from Canadian Combato Master IF the Fighting "System or Art You choose DOESN['T have Techniques in it that Show YOU How to Maim,Cripple, or Kill a Person IF called For You Are Just Playing a G.ame or SPORT Thank You Professor James and Kenny For The Great Videos, Neal
"No Pain, No Gain"; "No Sweat, No Flex"......Real Trainers, real -talk, real life, is the "REAL $HIT WE NEED." Thank you.

It took me a week of karate before I realised that "traditional martial arts" was all total B.S. 😂
Not even 2 minutes in and I already respect and like this guy, speakin' truth in a world of deception!

Facts... keep on exposing the charlatans.respect from 🏴

Something I have told guys for decades, if the person is quicker than you, you've had a bad day at the office. If they are good at cross cutting, you
you.ve had a bad day at the office! Develop speed with technique!
You are an amazing teacher and your information is absolutely outstanding!! Thank you for your approach of keeping it real 🙏
One of Bruce lee philosophy which I treasure in the martial Arts is when he says the Aim of jeet kundo is simply to simplify..meaning if someone grabs you just punch and he will let go..but,most martial art schools always tell do this,do that, before actually defending yourself..
A refreshing video for the spirits of real Martial Artists tired of the damage the Arts have suffered via fake clowns in NASCAR style Gi...
Thanks!
* * * * * - 5 star excellent video.

Fine vid guys. Thanks!
Yes, on point. When 3’ Rule is Broken, Be First, Be FAST ‼️
Thank you for your teachings. 🙏🏾
I totally agree with you I’m not in the most sure anymore I should be I’m 56 years old with two hip replacement and I’m not sure if I can still do it but I started much right when I was 16 years old until I was about 28
Really liked the video😎And I almost never like self defense videos. Power to you
Hey Professor David James & Kenny,
You Guys teach what CAN Save Your LIFE, I have Seen BLACK BELTS being given out to 9,10,11, and 12 years.
I didn't think much about it until Someone said at those ages they may think they can beat a man and get seriously Hurt
I have also seen a few Instructors they were to take a Body Mass Index Test there BE A whole lot of Fat VS Muscle on them than Muscle.
I have been watching you since before I Saw the 10 Commandment of Self Defense.
I wish I saw MORE instructor s like you and Kenny, I bet Those McDojo Masters Aren't teaching that crap they teach their Paying Student
I will just leave you a quote from Canadian Combato Master IF the Fighting "System or Art You choose DOESN['T have Techniques in it that Show YOU How to Maim,Cripple, or Kill a Person IF called For You Are Just Playing a G.ame or SPORT
Thank You Professor James and Kenny For The Great Videos,
Neal
Thank you!
