Taking Apart The Nintendo Switch JoyCons! Antenna Issues?

  • After taking apart the Nintendo Switch JoyCons I noticed the antenna in the left JoyCon seems to be in an awkward place. The antenna may be prone to interference issues depending on how it is held. It may be possible to reroute the antenna to the bottom of the JoyCon.

    A shorter cable run for the antenna will not cause issues, actually it reduces the amount of loss which is a benefit. The issue is firmware, they only need to release an update that increases the output power by about 5 %.

    Watching this video made me happy while I played on said joycons while exploring the world of Zelda. Specifically, hanged out in a village surfing the landscapes and talking to the villagers.

    It's always funny to me when it looks as though re-assembly is harder than taking something apart.
    After all, many things are never taken apart in their entire life-time, but everything ever made has had to be assembled at least once.
    Clearly, assembly should always be the easier task, in well designed products...

    It's interesting, I have had no connection problems at all. I stood with a couch in front of me blocking the switch, with the Joy Con behind my back a little over 17 feet away, and it works perfectly fine. I do have the Neon Joy Con, so I don't know if that makes a difference.

      I have the grey JoyCon Switch haven't had any problems with signals for Bluetooth or WiFi. I don't think it matters which color you have its just what happens when a new console launches. The vast majority probably isnt having any problems, its the vocal minority that usually speaks up when there's a few issues.

    • @newskybox
      @newskybox 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      tails300 I've been having some issues playing on my couch (grey too). It's kinda annoying but I can get by until they fix it w/ a patch or recall it (which would suck for consumers & reputation). I wouldn't want to have the issue forever, being that if I wanted to play precise platformers or something like Celeste, I would hate to die from stupid issues like this.

      From what I notice on my switch if you put the console in a location that is covered it can block the signal. As long as you leave it in the open. I put it right beside my TV. I did test it and put the switch behind the TV and then when I put the controller behind my back I would have issues. So I think just leave it in an area that is open and not all covered up and you should be fine.

    In the right Joy-Con, I can confirm that the square attached to the antenna is for NFC/Amiibo functionality. I haven't been able to successfully reroute or lengthen the antenna though, it seems quite delicate compared to the left joy-con. It's become much less reliable since I've tried extending the wire, even removing it and putting it back the way it was seems to have done some damage. Be careful. The left one is where most of the problems are anyways, that one is super easy to fix with a scrap wire and solder.

  • @KazoWAR
    @KazoWAR 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    from what I herd, it is entirely possible that the left joycon communicates with the right joycon and not the system, meaning it doesn't need the extra range to reach the console like the right.

      Christopher because the other games on treasure trove are basically DLC and so is spectre of torment, maybe this is deceptive marketing but I think they thought "most people don't want to replay Shovel Knight and the previous DLC so we'll sell it separately for 10 bucks" which is fine except THEY DIDNT FUCKING SAY "spectre of torment is already included in treasure trove"

    I honestly think it's the system not the joycons my switch started playing up today my joycons where desyncing so I tried another pair the same thing happened. Then I tried my joycons on another system and they work 100 percent. I'm thinking there's a issue with the system picking up the signal not the joycons

    This is pretty bad news then. This means, that the antenna problem is hardware problem and can´t be fixed by Nintendo at all. So they either have to recall every single left Joy Con on earth and replaces/repair them or claim that there is no problem and secretly release improved Joy Cons.

    The joycon issues doesn't apply to everyone. My Switch is actually behind my mounted TV completely being blocked from view. Also, I have a digital cable antenna, Amazon Fire TV, wireless soundbar, and a portable hard drive hooked up. I sit about 10-12 feet away and my joycon worked perfectly. I use two aluminum small narrow strips to improve the wlan wireless card reception.I get 4 bars 95% of the time.I place both strip on each other to look like a cross with scotch tape.Make sure both strip ends are not touching anything.The horizontal strip is placed and touch on both antenna plugs on the WLAN card.Some gamers would just wrap aluminum all over the WLAN card just for experiment research to see if this can work as good too. :O Try aluminum foil inside those JoyCon

    The locking mechanism is really bad. Its not the spring that wears out but the actual plastic stopper thats gets a dent.
    Dropping the controller on the floor is usually enough to get a dent that ruins the locking mechanism, because its made out of such a soft plastic. Ive already broken two joycons this way.

    They are very hard to open/clean/mod/repair. This is very disappointing for me since I've had such a great experience in the past with Nintendo controllers. It seems like the _repairability_ is the least of manufacturers concerns nowadays. If ya got a drifting joystick and you wanna fix it, just buy a new stick. Opening up the analog stick module was the worst nightmare I've ever had in my technician life and I wouldn't do it again, even if it's to save up 10-15 bucks on a stick replacement.

    Crazy question but I've noticed that on tv mode I've been running into some crazy framerate issues with Zelda in some areas of the map. Just wondering if anyone else has ran into it.

    • @MrFRNTIK
      @MrFRNTIK 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Benjamin Andersen I believe they're caused by bugs. when you walk into certain areas the engine must be running in to some kind of issue. Remember when they said that changing something small could cause a problem on the other side of the map? Well I've noticed that the physics has a bug where if you set down food on a fire the game thinks there's a grass fire and makes an updraft you can float on, but not only that, the items you set in the fire go flying away. I don't think it's supposed to do that. Since a bug like that is in the game it leads me to believe that the frame rate problens are also a bug possibly caused by some weird physics issue.

    • @EarthPrime52
      @EarthPrime52 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Benjamin Andersen it plays tons smoother in handheld mode. The grass seems to give me framerate problems on the TV.

    • @rib_rob_personal
      @rib_rob_personal 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The polygons for the grass require lots of computational power. When docked, it goes into 1080p, which requires more power than 900p. So more than average polygons + standard HD = lag. As I understand it, Nintendo has sent an update that makes it less of an issue. Just know that it will run better in hand held because it doesn't have to generate as high quality picture as it would docked.

    Hi i don't know if you read this but can you short the controller if you don't disconnect the battery immediately and prod around the antenna area.

    I recently got my 1st switch (haven't played/owned consoles since ps2 and handheld since gbc) and was dissapointed to find out one of my joycons have like 2 meters range only while other still connects from another room. Interesting part is that my right joycon is the one that loses connection.

    My problem with the joy con (red) is that it literally goes down when I don’t touch it. It can be really annoying.

    I'm really worried about the joycons. it's funny first thing I did was hold my joycons behind my back and they worked with only some minor interference, but later playing zelda is frequently would get stuck.

    Idk if you’ll see this but I have a problem with my right joycons happened yesterday when I replaced the joystick.
    I put it back together and then the sync button wouldn’t work, but when I docked it to the switch, and pulled it off it worked wirelessly.
    I tried to see what was wrong with it and took it apart again, everything looked connected good so I went to close it back up and now the whole thing doesn’t even work wirelessly.
    The battery won’t even get charge.
    To make sure I wasn’t going crazy on like how did I mess it up.. I swapped the battery and the SL/SR board with another right joycon and the pieces from the working one did not work, but the pieces from the non working worked fine in the working controller..
    I don’t think the full motherboard could be dead or it wouldn’t work connected.
    I’m just curious if you could reply back to me and tell me what you think it would be lol.
    All the buttons work when it’s connected, only think I notice when I attach its takes like a second longer than good working ones. Hope you see this lol.

      Sound like you damaged something. A pin on the battery's wire harness, maybe. Compare extreeeemely closely the working and nonworking. You might find the issue that way.

    Both of my analog sticks move by themselves. It started a few months ago and has slowly gotten worse and now it's getting so bad it's almost unplayable. I don't have a lot of money and yesterday I bought a horipad for $30 and on the 2nd day the left analog is moving down a little. I am getting pissed off. Is there anything I can do to fix analog sticks that move without being pressed?
