    ANSHUTZ 1710 HUNTING ( not target) stock original nonmodified rifle costed in Ukraine before big war less than 2 grand in IBIS shop. I have several Anshutz rifles and for about 20 years I sow no problems. At 50 metres , for example, my 1417 G showed 3 days ago 0.15 -0.16 inch series of 4 targets with SK ST+. Its real pleasure ! I never did no modifications. Clean with bore snake and Balistol after each shooting session and from time to time with Bore Tek Rimfire Blend. Thank You, Josh, for your videos. Hope you wil find the problem i your. custom rifle

    Josh your'e spot on. At that price point, steller performance is a minimum. On the humble end, I have a Christensen Ranger that shot like total crap when brand new along with feed/eject issues. Called Christensen, they took it back immediately with no issue.When I got it back it was a totally different rifle. I've shot 5 round .2's and .3's at 50 regularly (with good ammo...though it's not particularly picky as to which 'good' ammo it likes) with it and now really enjoy it. This past weekend I was shooting golf balls at 101 yards with SK rifle match. Easy. I've no doubt you'll turn that Anschutz into a shooter fully representative of the brand and price point. Thanks for bringing us along!

      Your Anschutz was designed and built to shoot 50 meters with Eley Ten X So it will shoot very well at 50 yards. The year your rifle was built. Jack Writer of the US used a Anschutz 1413 match 54 with Eley tenX to win the Gold medal at the 72 Munich Oylimpics.

    Maybe do some torque adjustments on the action screws. That may be the cheapest of all fixes to tune up that barrel to the stock.

    Josh. I own a 1710 feeding extraction issues are caused by short, stroking the bolt. Mine had a problem as well empty shells would fall on top of the magazine. I called Anschutz and they sent me a replacement extractor blade I replaced it and had no problems after that. I love my Rifle. It’s very accurate. Good luck with yours.

    Just a suggestion. Send the rifle to Lapua test tube in Arizona for ammo lot testing.
    If possible send the action and barrel back to the manufacturer for inspection, possibly headspacing.

  • @markthegunplumber8376
    @markthegunplumber8376 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm an Anschutz and Walther guy and a few things I can tell you to do is check and or try changing the head spacing with shims if possible. I'm not familiar with the newer stuff my rifles are old '54s and Walthers are KKM Spezial Matches from the 60s and 70s everything made back then is better than today. The Walther head spacing was way to tight so I pulled the barrel and rechambered it to .22 Eley EPS and played with the head space and I lead lapped the barrel with 600 grit lapping compound and then JB Bore Bright. I didn't touch the Anschutz 54 head spacing but I lead lapped the barrel as well and used JB bore bright on it too. both rifles now shoot outstanding. I don't know about the new barrels but the old ones were way undersize as compared to American barrels. American barrels are generally .217" and the Anschutz 54 was at least .216" maybe less. Seems like the German rifles like RWS Match or Norma Tac or Match or Wolf or SK Standard and sometimes likes Eley Club and CCI Standard mine hates Eley Black Box (except for one lot) and hated Tenex with a passion the cheaper the ammo the better it shoots. Have you stripped the barrel clean with some JB Bore bright and a bronze brush and reseasoned the barrel. JB has very fine grit in it like toothpaste. After i chamber customer barrels I go in with JB and lap the barrel with it to smooth out any tooling marks etc. works like a charm. Good Luck.

    I have a 1761 and know several people with Anschütz of several types, and there's a thing that goes for almost all of them.
    When you're shooting for groups, they seem to want a lot more foulers before they settle in. Minimum 25-30 rounds before looking at the result when changing ammo types, sometimes even more.

    • @CougarCdr06
      @CougarCdr06 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      totally agree. I have a new 1710 and it takes at least 15 foulers before it settles down. big pill but that is what mine takes.

    • @TehBaggins
      @TehBaggins ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CougarCdr06 Yeah. Hurts the wallet when it loves R50 once it's settled in, but it shows in the results.
      I have already scored 150 points three times with 9x, 8x and 8x in the 100m sporter rifle event we have at our club in training. (100m/110yds, 15 shots in three minutes, X-ring is 17.5mm/0.7", 10-ring is 38.5mm/1.5", non-attached front rest, no rear bag.)
      I believe Josh will get his 1710 sorted, but it needs to run the same batch of ammo for longer before trying to make a conclusion on the rifle or the ammo. A CZ457 tends to be far less picky when swapping ammo, so it's just a question of getting used to the new paradign that an Anschütz will bring.

      @@PursuitofAccuracy Oh, for sure. I've had to teach a few club members more patience coming from other platforms like the CZ457/455/452 and various Tikka, Savage and Ruger to Anschütz, so I was just defaulting to that mindset.
      Keep us posted, always love seeing new Anschütz owners in the wild. Somehow, most of them stick with it after figuring out the teething issues.

    This was not the video I was hoping for but one that mirrors my experience thus far. I shoot a stock 1710 out of the XLR chassis for NRL22 and chose the Toric for glass (based on your recommendation) and wish the rifle lived up to the glass! Me and an Anschutz bench rest friend went through 10-15 lots of R50 and settled on two different lots. Most lots shot closer to .3"+ at an indoor range while the ones we bought shot .2" or better (I find that SD really strange). One of the groups even had 4 shots in 1 hole (never done that before or since). I also think the magazines suck and find that misfeeds occur several times a match. As an antidotal note, a CZ457 friend shot the same lots...grouped more of them better, and his best lot was pretty much as good as mine...WTF? If you solve either the crazy Standard Deviation or the magazine sensitivity issues would love to see that follow up vid. Keep up the great work!

    Hey Josh, I’m really surprised at your outcome with this rifle. I only have one to compare it with, a friend in Florida bought one in Alabama and tested several lots of R-50s until he found one it liked. With his skill and the 1710 he wins much more than not. He came in second to a guy at a 100yd shoot in Lakeland who has a rest that cost as much as the rifle but the following day he beat him handily on the 50yd shoot where you must shoot off bags. His rifle and Gavin’s are the only the only experience I’ve had with them. On a side note I have a RimX coming from Kenny soon. Great video and good luck finding a solution on the Anschutz.

    Hey Josh, I know the feeling well. I have RimX magazine envy big time. My 1710 is mounted into an XLR Element Gen 4 with a C-6 and folder. The breach opening is not scope friendly. I was lucky to get a DIP 25 MOA rail for it. There’s something up with that rifle. I can shoot lot tested R50 at 100 yards and consistently shoot.250 groups, and lots of .170s. It shoots Eley Match really good. The SK Rifle match, not so much. Anshutz North America will probably get it shooting right if all else fails. My barrel is threaded. I couldn’t make out what’s on your gun. I went through a period of erratic behavior and it was the thread protector coming loose. Anshutz said put a piece of that Teflon pipe wrap tape on the threads. No more problems. Over tightening the protector will stress the crown. That will kill accuracy. About every 750-1000 rounds I use Iosso gently and the barrel looks like new through the bore scope. Look at the casing marks on the rim. If the firing pin spring is weak that will get you into trouble. The imprint should be deeper than the stock CZ. Good luck, I’ll be watching with interest.

    Three years ago I bought a 1710 from the custom shop, after testing and trying to troubleshoot anything it would only average out .350-.450 at 50 and was a big disappointment. Sent it back to ANA the sent back a brand new barreled action…same or worse! They kinda had a denial problem right from the start when I questioned each rifle even after yes the thousand rod break in recommended. Like you said built well but much cheaper rifles I have shoot a lot better. Decided to rather then take a big hit trying to sell a problem rifle to someone else, I did some research to find a guy or a smith who regularly does Annie’s. I decided to on recommendation to thread the action and replace the factory barrel with a Shilen Rachet 24”. Also some of the newer Annie’s can have a light strike issue so upgraded the springs in the bolt to the JP custom product sprigs. 800 bucks later I have a .250” 5 shot multi 6-7 group averaging rifle. Also I Lapua Test Center the rifle and bought ammo for it

    A big part of the reason why spent brass sometimes falls back is because you have scope rings that are attached to each other. Anschutz rifles almost all eject virtually straight up, bit to the right. So it's hitting that scope ring and falls back in there. I think if you'd bolt a pair of separate rings on there your issues should become much less

    Among world-class, silhouette shooters, you see Anschutz rifles almost exclusively, with the army marksmanship unit you see Anschutz rifles almost exclusively, with Olympic shooters you Anschutz rifles almost exclusively, with biathlon shooters you see Anschutz rifles almost exclusively. There’s a reason for that.

    I have a 1710 competition. I had to send it back to Anschutz NA to get it to eject consistently. It came back and is almost perfect with only 1/100 ish not ejecting properly but it is still weak ejection. The rifle shoots amazing groups with pretty much anything I run with the obvious that some shoot marginally better than others. That being said, I do find I need to clean it more often than other rimfires I own as it will start becoming really inconsistent. I also have light strikes with Eley ammunition that I don't get with the SK/Lapua line up so I purchased a few cases or SK LRM and called it good. Good luck and I will be following along.

    There is definitely a point of diminishing returns when it comes to rimfire rifles. past the point of 457 and B14, your extra improvements money should basically be expected for features like that riser, chasis material/weight, and so forth. when it comes to accuracy, there's only so much a barrelled action can do barring new technological advances. great vid tho looks like one hell of a rig there.

    I sold all my guns. Sako A7 25-06, Winchester 9422, Cooey 22, Mossberg 12 guage. And bought a 1761 Anschutz in 17 HMR, and later a MPR barrel (22LR) for it. With Vortex 4x12 power scope. And a little later, Anschutz 1710 HB, Leupold 3x9 Rimfire scope, with single stage triggers in both. Best magazine is the 1761, very easy to release and attach. 1710 I find is just okay, if fingers oily from handling ammo, hard to release magazine, finger or thumb slides on the release. Shouldn't have to spend $ for an extension on I high value firearm. Hornady 17 HMR ammo used in an indoor range, very happy, haven't tested out to 100 yards yet. It's just me as the shooter most days is the problem with some accuracy, but even surprise myself periodically with how accurate they both shoot. Would better scopes and proper rests help, absolutely. I maybe have an ejection problem once every 150 rounds in 22LR, never in 17 HMR. And it seems to go away if I cycle the bolt fast in both 1710 and 1761. Still very happy.
    I do miss my 9422 Winchester which as a teenager bought in the mid seventies. Winchester should bring it back, with some minor modifications for todays 22LR market.

    Having two 1710's my sample size is bigger but thankfully not the same experience. I did have the extraction issues on one of them which was dealt with by filing the extractor. First 1710 I bought was a new rifle with before mentioned extraction issue, second was a used older rifle with the ugly ass "butterfly safety" on the bolt. Hadn't been shot a lot but probably the homeliest 1710 out there, the stock looked like something off a Wal-mart Ruger 10-22. It now resides in a MDT chassis which had to be modified for the safety.
    Both rifles like the same ammo, SK rifle match, but shoot SK standard really well, Lapua Polar Biathlon also preforms rather well. Never had any success with RWS, Midas, or Center X. For distance (beyond 200 yd.) Eley Contact works well. Have shot both rifles in postal matches and 22 PRS matches winning both from time to time. Consistent groups in the low 0.2's with 0.1's when the planets align.
    Anyone who shoots much 22LR soon realizes even the "good" ammo is inconsistent with extreme spreads approaching 40 fps in some cases and SD's above 10. The best I've ever tested was a lot of Lapua Polar Biathlon with an extreme spread of 11 fps.

The ammo that seams to work the best in mine is eley have never tried the tenex but the pression auto and the benchrest outlaw works great also the match. I find that the slower speed seam to be the best, I have taken mine out to 300 yards with no problems. The best most consistent ammo I have found is Norma Target which is made by RWS which it shot RWS Match decent. I am putting a EC Tuner on it right now and will test this Tuesday. I like I bought a $250 tuner to put on a $2600 rifle with Timney Hit trigger set at 8 ozs and I shoot better groups with my friends Begara B14 with factory 3 pound trigger.

  • @geraldrandall1566

    I was surprised at the video as I am in the process of ordering the 1710 in two calibres. One being the 22lr. I grew up shooting weekly competitions with an Anschutz open competition sights. Although it is not long distance shooting, not putting 10 bullets into the X really came down to the shooter. I shot them for years. So I was disappointed that you have had such a disappointing experience. Especially with me in the process of buying two. I may need to review my decision. I personally drink Anschutz has and still makes great firearms. I think e problem is that the brand does attract some increase in the price. In addition, when I was shooting them, they didn’t have much competition. We now have a host of companies making 22lr at a much lower price point and shooting as well or almost as well. The issue is also that many pull the rifle it the box, shot hundreds of rounds and then compare it to their custom fitted CZ. Replaced trigger, new barrel, weighting just the way they like it, etc. I agree, with all the customisation it comes the the same as the Anschutz, but we cannot expect a standard Anschutz to fit everyone like a glove without work being done on it.
    I own a CZ457, and recently shot a 455 owned by someone else. The feeding and ejection issues drove me crazy on the 455. I told him to get it fixed as it was not supposed to have 3/10 ejection issues. All rifles need a bit of work. But I do agree, at a certain price point you expect all the basics to work 100%.
    Keep us posted as I don’t want to buy one and have to fork out a lot of money just to get it to shoot as well as a rifle half the price. But, the other rifle will never be an Anschutz 😂

    IMHO, 22 LR caliber will never deliver similar level of accuracy like normal BR center ignition ammo which you reload... I believe the problem is the ammo... The ammo box and the brand of ammo will never guarantee anything, sometimes it is good, next time not, it is always the matter of luck what is in that box of ammo...

    Hey Josh, Small bore target shooting is hard work and the ammo for these rifles is Speed critical to that barrel to stabilize the bullet in flighty you need to match the speed with bullet for barrel for that distance. Plus you have to weigh the ammo first to sort it out, there is a lot shit top end target ammo out there that is way overpriced for the bad performance its putting out and Eley match is one of them. cheers mate

    I would try and make sure you are pulling all the back on the bolt in a firm movement and not going for speed to see if that helps. It’s possible that the Anschutz is more sensitive to short stroking then the other guns you are used too. I have 3 Anschutz rifles with no feed or extraction issues unless I don’t quickly and firmly pull back on extractor. Also magazines can be purchased for $70 in Canada or $60 in Europe. Huge mark up in rifle and parts in the US.

    Do you have the ability to scope the chamber? I am wondering if it is slightly off being coaxial with the bore. Every barrel has some degree of curve to it. There is just no way to drill 30" long 0.205" holes and have them all be as straight as we would hope. The more of this there is and where it is in a particular rifle makes it harder to get the chamber perfectly aligned to the bore and there is simply nothing more important when building one. You can spot it with a 90-degree mirror on a scope and that might be your answer. Im sure they lap their bores and it will be all smooth and shiny inside but if the junction of chamber to bore is not equal all 360 degrees the chamber is not lined up with the bore.

    Best I could I scored your X-act targets and came up with an average ARA score of 383 per 5 shots and that means a full card score of 1915. That's a pretty good score for a PRS set up off a bipod and a rear bag. I would say that rifle shoots well with X-act and would clean a NRL22 KYL at 40 yards easy and score a clean run at NRL22 course of fire if the shooter was good enough. I shoot my RimX in ARA benchrest and in NRL22 using lot tested CenterX ammo and my RimX, Proof SS pre fit, in a McMillan stock with Trigger Tech trigger shoots the same, maybe a hair better as this Anny. So for a massed produced Anny to shoot with a quality action with a quality prefit seems about right. I am sure this Anny and my RimX would shoot better is say Kenny at Desert Precision cut & chambered and barreled it up with a top quality blank they would both shoot better.

    What Anschutz gives to olympians is not what we the public get. They test every rifle before they ship it out and if it's that 1 in 10000 unicorn rifle it goes to an athlete and not for public sale. If your going to spend that kind of money and want a performing rifle get a custom action & barrel, take it to a .22lr br specialist gun smith and tell them what ammo you want to shoot with it. You'll be much better off. And secondly never buy a second hand target rifle. if it shoots good no target shooter in their right mind would ever let it go.

    Love your videos Josh, but yes you are coming across as ragging on the Anschutz 1710. A NIB ANSCHUTZ TARGET VERSION IS $2695 + Tax
    I have a 1710 HB Classic, MPR64, and a 1761 thumbhole.
    Please send that rifle out to a good Gunsmith for an evaluation before another video.The groups you have shown are not an accurate representation of what Anschutz
    .22’s can do. If all the testing you have done I can tell you it is not going to get any better with different match ammo & lot testing etc…
    I would trade this rifle too if this is the best groups it can muster. My CZ455 can match these groups groups, which is😂 very accurate but not extremely accurate as the Anschutz line🎉
    .22’Anschutz rifles which are even more accurate. Yes the Anschutz. .22’s are over priced but all German steel is over priced .
    The 10rd steel mag you are using has been around forever. It is the exact same one as the MPR64 which is now no longer available. I agree the mag has a lot to be desired but what do you want for only $84.50 ea. 👎🏼.
    Just look at the few videos on U-Tube at the 1710HB & the MPR64 these rifles can actually shoot one hole groups. I mean 10 shots inside of a dime at 100yds.🙄😳.
    Mine shoot 😢Eley Match & SK Long range and a few other match ammo brands nearly identical and the rifle you are shooting is not very accurate with some brands that tells me their has got to be something wrong with the barrel as most Anschutz rifles will shoot good match pretty close which is not the case with some CZ’s of course lot testing is important to get it dialed in.
