Modern psychology would recognize this as grief so profound it becomes a psychosis. If he'd have just been ordinary greedy or selfish, he would've at least maintained his own home. Not mention that whole dead mistress thing. 😱

“Keeping it in the family” and “despite money didn’t have a happy family life “... sounds like that sums up life.

I find this so interesting, especially coming from the north of England. I used to take my children walking on the Lowther estate when they were small. We could see the remains of the castle and also used to walk around the family graveyard. You put so much information into your forgotten lives without making them sound boring. I am sure if I was to home school my children nowadays, I would use you as a history lesson. The only discrepancy I have , is the Westmoreland dialect which of course is only used locally, we pronounce it as Westmaland. Keep up the good work.

Pocket Burrows (rotten burrows) must have existed well into the 20th Century. Gilbert & Sullivan refers to them in HMS Pinafore, when Sir Joseph Porter sings the patter song, "Ruler of the Queens Navy"...
I grew so rich that I was sent
By a pocket borough into Parliament.
I always voted at my party's call,
And I never thought of thinking for myself at all.
Chorus: And he never thought of thinking for himself at all.
Sir Joseph: I thought so little, they rewarded me
By making me the Ruler of the Queen's Navee!

I was only considering the family when I left my comment, but noticing what a few people commented, then I have to add something. All those who think that sharing somebody's wealth is a good thing, think again. Somebody will be in charge of that, and he/she will have his/her agenda. He was a miserable person but look what an example he had - all wealthy people and titled ones, too, had (still do, even those who claim they care cor the little people) disdain for those they're supposed to represent. His mother pushed him to be ruthless, and as a young boy he was forced to become what he fought against, and people, unfortunately, only respect those whom they fear...

These kind of people need to be removed and stripped of their ill gotton gains. Today many of the stately homes castles estates etc should be taken and used for worthy needs. Not for greed.

@ 6:30 - like it’s not still common today lol I would b surprised to find a truly monogamous rich man, like any1 who claims to be is either impotent or lying 😂

Thanks for another interesting history. Two more names for you to consider. 1) Harriet Tubman, escaped slave, who risked her own life many times to help other slaves escape. 2) Jeremiah Coghlan. A cabin boy who rose to become a captain in the RN. Coghlan's real life bravery and adventures were immortalised in CS Forester's books about Horatio Hornblower. Keep up the good work.

He was most certainly a Freemason. In one of the paintings you showed he was giving the sign of the eastern triangle & there was a mask on his right side which is also a masonic symbol. Standard for most nobility at the time.

Does being a Freemason increase their wealth or is it like a required club to join as an aristocrat?
