I think he may enjoy Zero Mission quite a bit, but if Adam was any indication of him not enjoying the initial part of Dread (too much exposition), he probably won't enjoy Fusion as much.
I dont know how would he take Fusion, but Zero Mission...he needs to play it ASAP. Because while some elements of Super Metroid didnt age well (sorry, they didnt), Zero Mission aged like wine.

Not to mention fusion is just so much more linear and feels like the smash brawl of the metroid franchise. Fusion just doesn't want even the most hardcore of hardcore fans to break it.
I still can't believe he played on his birthday, and it was between Super Metroid and Bloodborne. And Super Metroid won out! Was such a surreal experience considering Metroid is one of my favorite series out there, and while Super isn't my favorite one, I do respect what it did. Was a very fun experience to witness Max learn about all the things that are just common knowledge to most Metroid fans; it's not often we get to have these sort of first time reactions, so it's exciting.
As one who absolutely loves Super Metroid, to the point that I personally consider it my #1, OVER FINAL FANTASY 7, it puts a smile on my face that you enjoyed it so much. SM is a absolute masterpiece. And yes, I’m not going to say it’s perfect, ITS VERY FLAWED, What game isn’t. But it’s a STANDARD that nobody can’t deny. Thanks Max, for playing this game.
Super Metroid is a genre and era defining game: - How the game tells you nothing about what's going on through dialogue or text boxes and only resorts to environmental storytelling to deliver its narrative. - All the secret techniques at your disposal that you have but you don't know about, some taught organically by the game itself, others needing experimentation and curiosity from the player. - The amount of sequence breaks is just bonkers. Really lets players loose and figure out new paths that may not seem intuitive but are achievable with enough determination and skill. - One of the most iconic end game sequences of all time. Truly an epic finish. - Replay value of this game is through the roof and it is still being speedrun after all these years being in the top 10 of most speedrun games of all time. Legendary game.
Having no nostalgia I was blown away by Super Metroid where it became pretty much one of my favorite games ever despite being an adult. What cemented it as probably my favorite Metroid was replaying it, I found that I actually enjoyed the other titles slightly less on replay but enjoyed Super even more on a second playthrough then on my first, which usually doesn't happen for me. I even started to prefer the much more slower pace then the much faster pace the newer 2D titles adopted.
I played Super Metroid late as well... When Zero Mission and Fusion came out I fell in love with the series and went back to experience Super Metroid and it blew my mind, it's by far my favorite SNES title.
It would also be nice to see Max give Symphony of the Night a proper try after he watched Simmons *_dump an entire continent of diarrheic shit on it from beginning to end_* when they played it years ago in the YoVideogames channel.
Watching Max on Twitch experiencing Super Metroid for the very first time was one of my favorite moments of 2021 as was his playthrough of Metroid: Dread afterwards. Now that he is officially a Metroid fan, hopefully we'll next see him stream the likes of Metroid: Fusion, Metroid: Zero Mission, Metroid: Samus Returns (from the developers of Metroid: Dread) & hopefully also the original Metroid. Also hope we see Max try some non-Metroid Metroidvania style games like Dead Cells, Deedlit's Labyrinth (inspired by the legendary anime Record of Lodoss War) and most especially the legendary Castlevania: Symphony of The Night. Aria of Sorrow, Dawn of Sorrow & Portrait of Ruin are also fantastic Metroidvania style Castlevania games.
Dreads difficulty surprised me, but in a good way. I was apprehensive at first about 60 for a 2D game, but dread is in IMO the greatest of the super Metroid games. Never got to play the GameCube ones, but will purchase if they are remastered.
Agreed, but also I feel like 2D games are a stylistic choice, not just a price point. Metroid Dread definitely stuck with me more than a lot of 3D games did this year.

I had a similar experience earlier in '21. For the first time ever, I played through Earthbound, and my god have I been missing out. The zany characters, wild concepts you've never seen before or since, the unique level design, it all was perfectly put together. And don't even get me started on the soundtrack. Ahh, it was one of the best I've ever listened to. At 29 years old, I had one of the best gaming experiences of my life. Earthbound definitely surprised the hell out of me and was easily my game of the year 2021.
3:30 MARIDIA is maybe my top favorite area of Super Metroid, I love the ambient and music, I have no issues with grappling beam or sand or etc. Every time I get into Maridia is a joy and a contrast against the rest of the game.
I love that you’ve discovered Metroid genre. I would recommend the order of Zero Mission, AM2R/Samus Returns, then Fusion. Hollow Knight and Blasphemous were also awesome.
Would put axiom verge somewhere on that list, if only because most of the indie games are more metroidvania influenced, whereas axiom verge is more strictly metroid-influenced.
Super Metroid is my favorite game of all time, and Max's playthrough of the game is one of my favorite playthroughs of it. It is the definition of a timeless and essential game from that era
Daaaaaamn, I’m so glad you played Metroid, but you gotta finish SotN as well. What I love about SotN is how you can finish the game, and take a break, come back, and on another play through, you find stuff you didn’t find the first time around. Unless you want to hard core 200% whatever the castle on the first save. But then you get different drops from the enemies as well going through the game on other play through.
So, 2021 was my first year of playing Metroid outside of the very 1st one on NES which i beat years ago. I wanted to play trhough all mainline games up to Dread. So what i did was play through "Zero Mission", then "AM2R" (Fanmade Metroid 2 Remake), followed by "Super Metroid", "Fusion" and finally "Dread". Having played all of those one after another, this is my conclusion: • #1 "Dread", hands down the best game. I love all the nods to the previous games, especially if you played them in story-chronological order as i did. Also controls, finally done right. • #2 "AM2R" is close second. I can't believe how good that game was, especially for being fanmade and all. I could have gone with the 3DS remake, but i'm glad i played through this one. • #3 "Zero Mission" was just the original as i remembered it, but so much better + the epic Zero Suit conclusion at the end, very nice. • #4 "Fusion" did things different, with the X mechanic and all, but it was the most well crafted of the 2D games outside of "AM2R". Honestly it is just as good as "Zero Mission" making them interchangable for me. • #5 And finally at last place: "Super Metroid". It was a good game no doubt, but being pitched against those other 4 games it's just the weakest entry of them all. Everything about it just felt sluggish and not as polished. The Leveldesign was at times just a slighht bit too cryptic as well. But then again, yes, it IS the oldest out of the ones i've played. • As a BONUS, i'll add the original "Metroid" at #6, it's fun and all but i'd rather never ~suffer~ through it again. xD
This series and it's games are definitely worthy of having a genre named after them. Glad that Max was able to experience this wonderful gem and play it on stream for the first time. He was able to enjoy the depth and freedom of exploration this game has to offer that was made a long time ago. Also glad that he agrees that the grapple beam is as clunky to use as ever. His meltdown on stream during the flooded cavern > wrecked ship journey was the best.
Man I wish I liked it as much as he did. I beat the final boss on my 2nd or 3rd run (can't remember) so I didn't play the game very long and lost interest.

I played through this game for the first time in one sitting yesterday and I am absolutely amazed at how they took into consideration that people would learn how to wall jump and still let them progress without breaking the game. Also, Maridia and its sand pits can go straight to the trash. That area almost made me want to just stop playing.

The problem with IX is that not that many people played it when it came out, the PS2 was already out, VIII was released not that long ago, and X was already announced. The thing with VII (aside from how good it actually is) is that is what the first FF for most fans, and they feel a personal connection to it. I mean, VII was my first FF, and it is my second favorite in the franchise, but IX is something else.
you should really try some castlevania games, like the ones on gba\ds and symphony of the night, that's plenty of fun if you like this kind of exploration\progress
Lucky for Max, the Metroid series is blessed with some of the best remakes ever, so he can play through the main series starting with Zero Mission and Samus Returns. Some parts of Fusion will probably piss him off, and funny enough I went back and played it again just before Dread came out and found my huge nostalgia bubble deflated a little. Still, they are all fantastic games. I wouldn't give any of them anything less than a 9/10.

Beat Castlevania Symphony of the Night Before you play Hollow Knight or Ori. You should see completely what Super Metroid influenced in Symphony to create the metroidvania genre.
I played Super metroid for the first time last year as well. It was pretty good! I also played Metroid Fusion and Metroid zero mission. Super had some loose mechanics and less of a linearity. It leaves an impression, but it did cause some frustration. There were some baffling things that under normal circumstances i would have struggled to even finish it. The jump mechanics which are not very clear and were necessary to know to progress and that infamous bomb in the tube. Terrible moments! I find Fusion and zero mission were more streamlined and i didn't come across such baffling moments. I truly loved all of them, but i would not play Super again, but i would zero mission or fusion. I got the remaining ones to play this year. Metroid samus returns on 3DS and Dread on Switch. I became a fan of the series after playing those 3 titles. I was missing on this series for decades, but on the bright side, i didn't have to wait for Dread. 🤣
Cant wait to see hollow knight gameplay, love watching people join our community and get hype playing and witnessing one of the greatest games of all time

Aliens - when it works - is fun but for me every time they patched the game which felt like every other day would require me to download 15 GB every patch even though I had a physical version for Playstation and my download speed is like 300kb/s so it could take hours to download
I gotta say I love Metroid but for some reason I don't like Super as much as many people seems to do, I guess it has a lot to do with the fact that I've played it after both Fusion and Zero Mission which made the controls seem a bit awkward but mostly because there were far too many times on the game where exploration wasn't as organic as it should be, even in Metroid 1 for NES when I got stuck I just had to check the map and go back to some areas until I figure out how to proceed but Super has too many obscure places where you have to blow a secret wall or 💩 like that that doesn't really flow well with the exploration and also the gravity jump input is by far the worst on the whole series I'm not taking anything from it cause it's still a great game and for the time it came out it was truly groundbreaking but personally it doesn't rank particularly high on my favorite Metroid games
I still hope that Max will experience the GBA Metroid games and takes us through his experience.

GBA Metroid is great and all, but Metroid Prime 1 is by far my favorite Metroid game.

The problem with IX is that not that many people played it when it came out, the PS2 was already out, VIII was released not that long ago, and X was already announced.
The thing with VII (aside from how good it actually is) is that is what the first FF for most fans, and they feel a personal connection to it.
I mean, VII was my first FF, and it is my second favorite in the franchise, but IX is something else.
Since prime 4 is coming out any chance you could play the other 2d metroids or metroid prime
Yes the game has aged and doesn't hold up in some aspects but you can clearly see how influential Super Metroid is on the gaming industry as a whole.

you should really try some castlevania games, like the ones on gba\ds and symphony of the night, that's plenty of fun if you like this kind of exploration\progress
Max should play Metroid Prime for the boys
Lucky for Max, the Metroid series is blessed with some of the best remakes ever, so he can play through the main series starting with Zero Mission and Samus Returns. Some parts of Fusion will probably piss him off, and funny enough I went back and played it again just before Dread came out and found my huge nostalgia bubble deflated a little. Still, they are all fantastic games. I wouldn't give any of them anything less than a 9/10.

One of my all time greatest games ever! To this day! Metroid "fusion" and "zero mission" GBA are insane!
Beat Castlevania Symphony of the Night Before you play Hollow Knight or Ori. You should see completely what Super Metroid influenced in Symphony to create the metroidvania genre.
I played Super metroid for the first time last year as well. It was pretty good!
I also played Metroid Fusion and Metroid zero mission. Super had some loose mechanics and less of a linearity. It leaves an impression, but it did cause some frustration. There were some baffling things that under normal circumstances i would have struggled to even finish it. The jump mechanics which are not very clear and were necessary to know to progress and that infamous bomb in the tube. Terrible moments! I find Fusion and zero mission were more streamlined and i didn't come across such baffling moments. I truly loved all of them, but i would not play Super again, but i would zero mission or fusion.
I got the remaining ones to play this year. Metroid samus returns on 3DS and Dread on Switch. I became a fan of the series after playing those 3 titles. I was missing on this series for decades, but on the bright side, i didn't have to wait for Dread. 🤣
Funny thing, Maridia is much much much easier on a second playthrough, at least for me. Its the most straight forward section of the game.

Aliens - when it works - is fun but for me every time they patched the game which felt like every other day would require me to download 15 GB every patch even though I had a physical version for Playstation and my download speed is like 300kb/s so it could take hours to download

Silksong is my most anticipated game and considering what is coming out this year that speaks volumes.
Hollow Knight is hard AF. You should give Dead Cells a try first. It's much fast pace game. 🤔

Still kinda wish the vertical movement was a bit better in this game. Like yeah, you’re in space and all that so it’s different, but man was it jank.
You should definitely play at least Prime 1 once Nintendo starts rolling out the red carpet for Prime 4!

I gotta say I love Metroid but for some reason I don't like Super as much as many people seems to do, I guess it has a lot to do with the fact that I've played it after both Fusion and Zero Mission which made the controls seem a bit awkward but mostly because there were far too many times on the game where exploration wasn't as organic as it should be, even in Metroid 1 for NES when I got stuck I just had to check the map and go back to some areas until I figure out how to proceed but Super has too many obscure places where you have to blow a secret wall or 💩 like that that doesn't really flow well with the exploration and also the gravity jump input is by far the worst on the whole series
I'm not taking anything from it cause it's still a great game and for the time it came out it was truly groundbreaking but personally it doesn't rank particularly high on my favorite Metroid games
This game is a Blast, Also the speed runs of this game are very impressive!!
