    2021 HH Platinum awd with tow hitch and grippy Nokian WrG4 SUV tires: I have a heavy foot driving in sport mode and have 20k miles so far. I get 30.8 mpg driving mostly rural highways and some small town city traffic. A trip to Mt Rushmore where I drove at 90-100+mph for 8 hours through South Dakota where speed limit was 80mph with loaded up vehicle I got 19mpg. Tip: If you want some fun at a light use TRAIL mode

    I like you videos, keep up the good work. My wife and I have a 2020 Highlander Hybrid AWD model LE. I have had several tanks in summer actually over 40 MPG (thats a U.S. gallon). I don't know of any other SUV AWD vehicle of this size out there that can get this type of fuel economy and still have the ability to tow a 3,500 lb trailer, in which we do.

    • @patriotcanuck6485
      @patriotcanuck6485 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree it has great mileage for such a big vehicle. The hybrid model in UK can tow 2000kg (4400 lbs) which I'm surprised at, given it has a smaller engine than the Rx450h (which I have now and tow a twin axle caravan). How capable at towing do you find your highlander?

  • @baldheadlogic
    @baldheadlogic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Wow. I am surprised at the fuel range. I am finding that many of the newly redesigned models especially the hybrid variants are starting to come with reduced gas tank sizes. Glad to see that this one will potentially take weeks to need a fill-up.

      Yes, the fuel tank on the Highlander Hybrid (65 liters) is almost the same size as the regular Highlander (68 liters).

    • @garfieldirwin
      @garfieldirwin 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@farmerscoffee It may depend on the city/highway mix. This tester mix was 60 City 40 highway. If you drive more on the highway the fuel mileage goes way down on a hybrid, as counter-intuitive as that may seem. Also, hybrids get lousy gas mileage in winter due to the change in fuel additives and cold battery.

  • @Cheema1501
    @Cheema1501 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Wait... By ur calculations you said you would get over a 1000km with a full fuel tank.
    But the highlander's system says your fuel range is only 600ish kilometers with a full tank.
    How does that make sense

    • @FuelEconomyTest

      The fuel range shown at the start of the video is based on the fuel economy of the person who drove before me. Perhaps they didn't have it on ECO mode or were heavy-footed.

      The seat does not adjust properly. The front of seat stops traveling up while the center continues. So no mor thigh support. Kind of sliding down from the seat. The worst seat of all vehicles I have ever owned. Makes me want to sell it.

      I am serious - I had my Highlander for just two months and I want to sell it. Mainly because of the seats.
      Oh… -There is one more. This tiny 2.5L four cylinder engine is LOUD!

      I see almost exactly what you are seeing with regards to the range, mpg, and tank capacity. Does the hybrid battery actually necessitate that the fuel tank is smaller to provide the necessary space? I thought I remember reading something along these lines in Car and Driver on previous model year of this vehicle. All the literature I can find both from Toyota and on the web, state a 17+ gallon fuel tank capacity. With an estimated range of 2 miles remaining, the most I have ever been able to squeeze in is 14.4 gallons. Inquiring minds want to know.

    That is a great video. So he got 39.5567 mpg on eco mode. That means that you would get 712 miles on a full tank of gas and at the current cost of $3 per gallon, that would cost $54 to fill up a full tank of gas; therefore, it would be a cost of 7.584 cents per mile. That is very impressive.
    Remember: that this is optimum conditions meaning, he is running it with no A/C or Heater and he is running in EcoMode.
    What also should be factored in is that you should change out the battery of the hybrid every 80k miles. If the battery costs $3000, (which no one knows what this costs since it is Toyota only part and hardly anyone has bought one yet) that would add on 3.75 cents per mile, so that is 11.334 cents per mile. So it basically costs $9067.20 to drive 80,000 miles. How does that compare to the gas counterpart? The highlander (gas only) gets on average 23.6 mpg. The cost of that vehicle to drive 80000 miles is $10169.49. So over an 80,000-mile span, driving the hybrid over the gas-only vehicle will save you approximately $1102 in gas + maintenance over the span of time that it takes to reach 80,000 miles. If that is 5 years (16000 miles per year), it is going to save you $18.36 a month.
    The cost of the lowest price highlander hybrid is $39055. The same package as a gas model costs $37605. That is a $1450 difference in cost. So if you drive less than 16,000 miles a year, it is $348 more expensive to drive a hybrid over the cost of the same vehicle powered by gas for 5 years. It is just shiting the costs around so that it is more difficult to actually see that you are really not saving any money by driving a hybrid. So what would be the break-even point? I am estimating that it would either be if you drive 21,000 miles a year or if gas gets to $3.25 per gallon and it would have to sustain that price for 5 years. So I still think that I would rather pay less for the vehicle, not have to worry about the big expense for the battery at 80,000 miles, and have more power and everything else that a gas-only car would provide than the hybrid product that costs more in every other way other than the price at the pump.
    So in short,, this hybrid thing is for Californians and those rich, cruchy liberals who are trying to save the planet, and not for anyone else.

      You nitwit

    • @KT37915A
      @KT37915A 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@rajamoffin post some data on that fact.
      Regardless if it lasts from 80k miles or 150k miles, the cost is relatively the same. It’s about $3000 to replace and it must be bought from the dealership and installed by a technician.
      Here is what I found on auto trader
      Whether you’re planning to buy a used hybrid or you already own one, you’ll need to give some thought to the hybrid battery. That’s because the battery in a hybrid vehicle isn’t like the one in a traditional car, and it can’t be replaced for $75 at the local auto parts store.
      Instead, a failed hybrid car battery can cost thousands of dollars to replace, and that can be a big deal to a shopper who bought a hybrid to save money. But before you get too worried, we’ve provided some tips on when to expect the battery to fail and ways to avoid a huge bill. Find a used hybrid car for sale near you
      When Will It Fail?
      This is the most important question posed by hybrid owners and drivers considering a used hybrid. Unfortunately, answering it isn’t easy - largely because each case seems to be different. Some drivers experience failure at 70,000 miles, while others can make it to 200,000 miles without issue.
      In our experience, hybrid batteries start to become a risk when they’re 10 to 15 years old and they’ve covered 120,000 to 150,000 miles. Yes, some owners will do a lot better than that. There are reports of batteries lasting well into the 200,000-mile range. But we wouldn’t suggest counting on those reports as the norm, especially if you’re considering a used hybrid and you’re on a budget.
