*NOTICE*! My computer has thrown a wobbly in the intro and somehow Fleetwood Mac's intro is being used! So I have removed it, we'll jump straight into it. (the edit takes a few hours to complete)
It is much better with the noisy blurb about the show coming first...and THEN you can introduce who you will be analyzing. The other way around as you have been doing it, the audience has to remember who you are analyzing -- and THEN the loud intro and then you say, let's hear them etc. It is MUCH better to start with the loud intro and then you start talking. Just my opinion.
It’s all good man . We’re human. This was beautiful Fil . One can “ The raw emotions in their harmony’s . “ I’ve never heard this before. It’s really soothing. Thanks again man ! ❤️☮️
I didn’t know Donovan and Crystal Gayle ever sang together-what a lovely duet! When I was a little girl, I saw Crystal Gayle on TV and was fascinated-her incredible hair, luminous eyes, and expressive voice. 💜💜💜
Love Donovan. Thanks for featuring with Crystal Gayle. It is an interesting pairing. Atlantis is my personal favorite Donovan song, but he sure had a lot of Hits!
Great analysis. Excellent. So sweet. What a pleasant surprise.👏👏 I love to see a guy play the harmonica along with the guitar. You know I always like to pick out my favorite lines in a song. In this one, "I want to hide a while behind your smile, I may as well try and catch the wind". 😍 When listening to this I get lost it makes me start dreaming about what could be, what could have been and what will be, then realty sets in and life goes on. Well I'm going to walk for a bit so have a good , rested, healthy, day.❤❤❤❤
I've loved this duet since ages! Such interesting blend of voices, a delicate rendition and Crystal at her absolute best: subtle, responding and incredibly beautiful!!❤
Sir Fil !!!!!! You've outdone yourself now !!!! I grew up listening to Donovan, and just got a cd of his greatest hits....this was a gorgeous rendition of Catch The Wind !!!! We love these videos, Sir Fil, and your diverse musicians are what make it the wonderful TH-cam channel that it is !!!! Thank you, thank you Sir !!!!!! :-D
First time I’ve seen this Fil and totally enjoyed it! Their voices really compliment each other and they sound sensational as a duet! Brilliant! Cheers Mario! 😀👌🤘
Great report and research, Fil! You're my fave analyzer. I was around in the 60's and remember some kid in gym class singing " Mellow Yellow"... 😁 I have all of Donovan's old stuff on vinyl..
Such a sweet video...so peaceful....Love them both..they are both comming from a place of calmness and honesty.....thank you Fil,....Just what we all needed.
You boggle my mind with your indepth explanations of musical terms alot of players Must look to you for your expertise! They came to the right place. Your analyses of music is just outstanding. You Mr Fil Henley are a Musical Genius.
Saw him in 1968 and 2008! He’s always been one of my favorite singer/ songwriters. He’s vastly underrated- his grasp of folk music and jazz is wonderful. “ Gift From a Flower to a Garden” is a marvelous collection of songs. He was very inspired by Bert Jansch of Pentangle.
Karen Nyere I have the double LP box set "A Gift From a Flower to a Garden" a masterpiece by Donovan and one of the first record album by a popular artist to contain songs lyrics. He still active to this day.
An artist like Donovan You could have done a week of analysis. he has so much credits to his name. there a concert of Donovan performing by himself with guitar and harmonica from 1974 on TH-cam that about 40 minutes long and he hold the audience attention the whole time. Donovan is still active to this day. if you decide to feature Donovan again on your channel you get no complaints from me. Thanks for this one Fil.
Being born and raised in Detroit, honestly never heard any country music til early 20s, and then thought was the "cryin in the beer"music, depressing, lol. But I remember hearing Crystal and thought she had one of the most beautiful voices I'd ever heard. I honestly think she was better than her sister. Always loved and still love Donovan's. Brings back great memories.
Hi Fil, I think , at the age of 6 or 7, Donovan was my favorite musician, over the Beatles. Can not believe he's 75 today! I was a sixties kid. This is a beautiful tribute!
Both Donovan and Crystal Gayle are talented artist in their own rights. would be nice in the future if you feature both of them independently on your channel.
Hi Fil! You are going back to my era, and I love it! Crystal Gayle was a treasure! She sounded nothing like her sister Loretta Lynn! Two different country sounds! Donavan had such a way with words! Loved them together! ✌️ Please do Crystal Gayle Half the Way..played it over and over!
Lovely to see this. Been a Donavan fan since I discovered him in my college days 30 years ago. Wasn’t sure this duet would work, but I really enjoyed it. He’s such a good storyteller and that really comes through in his live performances. The guitar playing of these singer songwriters is often overlooked. Thanks for breaking it down for us. Great vid as always. 👍 Nice shoutout for Barabajagal, my favorite Don album. Had no clue the Jeff Beck Group were the other musicians on that. You blew my mind with that one! How did I not know that? 😱
HI FIL WOW WHAT A GREAT VIDEO. THAT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL. THEY REALLY SOUNDED GREAT TOGEATHER. LOVED IT. YOU ARE THE BEST .YOU DO A VERY GOOD JOB. LOVE TO WATCH YOU AND HEAR YOU PLAY. YOU ARE SO GOOD. THANKYOU. PEACE AND LOVE
Awesome choice Fil and thank you for it. Down the memory lane with my all time favorite. In the early 70's, Donovan was called Bob Dylan of Great Britain.
Fil, you found one I had never seen! I swear, Crystal Gayle was a goddess to me at the time. The epitome of femininity and mystery (I was eleven.) And Donovan, an avatar of the Zeitgeist. Loved it.
I always liked Donovan and when you described his career, it really reminded me of his success. All of those songs bring back great memories. You are a great multi-instrumentalist yourself, but better than that you are a great humanitarian. See you at the next one.
Donovan is GREAT! Such an impressive body of work. Unique vocals EXCELLENT songwriter and musician. A true original! Always been a HUGE fan! Pair him with that beautiful unmistakable voice of Crystal Gayle and it's a thing of real beauty!! Enjoyed this video and your demo Fil. Thanks! 😎🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦
I love Crystal Gayle and have performed many of her songs. Donovan has a beautiful voice that is soft. I wasn't sure how they would pair, but I guess i you put a couple of pros together they will find a way to make it perfect. Thanks Fil.
I was fortunate to see Donovan in concert 3 times at Chicago's Auditorium Theater. Front row center twice front row left. My late sister Sandra knew someone who worked for ticketron. Always got great tickets to concerts on the day before the concert. I play guitar and keyboards. Donovan is an influence on my musical likes. Good review 👍 Fil. Donovan influenced a lot of musicians, including the Allman Brothers Band.
Phil: Just a footnote to your comment at 5:45 about the "A" chord: If you use Donovan's fingering, -- first finger on string 3, fret 2 -- then you just slide it back one fret for the "E" chord and keep it in place for the "D" chord, which gives you fretboard orientation without looking, and no gaps between chords when you change. Much gratitude to Donovan for getting me started on guitar when I was a teenager. It was this song, too. I learned it for my girlfriend at the time. Karen. When he transposes it to the "C-F-G' chord forms, he plays an independent bassline melody, like Woody Guthrie or the Carter family. That's hard to imitate, but much harder to imitate is his flawless sense of rhythm. As far as melody goes, he effortlessly composed in a multitude of styles -- folk ("Josie"), jazz ("Sunny Goodge Street"), swing ("Museum," "As I Recall It"), Caribbean ("There Is A Mountain" and "West Indian Lady") and mystical ("Hampstead Incident," "Sand And Foam," "Isle Of Islay") -- and all of it is good. Like a lot of the other commenters, I'm sorry he faded from the spotlight, though he's still active. His talent for melody was exceptional and unique. Sounds fresh even today. Thanks for this review.
I am stopping here @ 10:56. It is phenomenal how you are able to break simplicity down to rather complex, then bring it back to simplicity in your analyses. I believe, ANYONE, from beginning guitar player to the most achieved guitar player would be impressed and learn from your analysis style here.
Fil, Donovan Leitch is one of my heroes as well. I knew him with the album Narabajagal, Atlantis, and Mellow Yellow, etc. But when he released the LP ‘Open Road’ he went to another level ! I heard the songs a thousand of times. I used almost the entire albun - Riki Tiki Tavi, Changes, Clara Clarivoiyant, Season of Farewell (love it), Poke at the Pope, and even New Year’s Resolution I loved to play and sing. I still remember all harmonies. There was a Bossa-Nova style song - witch I play as well - “When I hear Astrud jasmine fills the air...” He was talking about Astrud Gilberto, witch was married with João Gilberto - one of most famous Bossa Nova singer/guitar player. He passed away last year (exactly one year). Donovan payed his tribute to Bossa-Nova with this song. For me, as a Brazilian, it was a surprise he liked this kind of stuff.
I love your analysis and instruction. We're on tighter quarantine, once again in Denver, and I so enjoy your videos. I just found your covers and I LOVE THEM!!! You have enough videos to keep me occupied for good long while! Thank you. I'm such a fan! 😁♥️
I don't listen to Donovan too often, but I LOVE his speaking voice in his song, Atlantis. He speaks for almost the first 2 minutes of that song, and it's very therapeutic to my ears. I would love to hear more story telling from him. I think Crystal was known almost as much for her Rapunzel like hair as her sweet sounding voice. 👌 Fil, I enjoy your speaking voice, also. Any audio books in the future with your voice would be a BIG HIT. 🥰👍
Thanks for this Fil I have always loved Donovan. To quote another lyric "A little bit of courage is all we lack, So catch me if you can, I'm going back".
Two of my favorite performers mixing so well together. I appreciated your review as there was so much talent blending together balanced and compatible. Two bright stars sharing the light.
Crystal Gayle has always been my guilty pleasure. I have some of her albums which I never admitted to, being a closed minded musical snob in those days! I watched this when it was first shown on telly and was transfixed.
I saw Donovan solo maybe 8 years ago as part of a "Fest For Beatles Fans" exposition in NYC. His voice is a bid wobbly now with a bit more of his trademark tremolo, but he's still a savvy entertainer and he gave us hit after hit.
Hello Fil, Gosh, two favorites in one video. Good song, catch the wind. Donovan is a legend, he was there in the 60's, many great songs. When I first heard, Don't it make my brown eyes blue by Crystal, it became a fast favorite. I know your a great guitar teacher, and, you should be. Love the guitar as part of the analysis, you can really connect with your narrative. Awesome channel, I try to never miss one, but, will watch later. All the best from Oregon, C.
Thanks for posting this! I just recently started to get back to playing Donovan on guitar, and it's coming back like magic (even the hard parts). Adding Crystal Gayle only makes it better!
This album is iconic cause a reaction. Grammy Award for Record of the Year, "The Girl from Ipanema", 1964 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, Getz/Gilberto, Stan Getz and João Gilberto (Verve) 1964 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Jazz Performance, Small Group or Soloist With Small Group, Getz/Gilberto, Stan Getz 1964
This is more of a blast from my childhood, as my oldest brother was a big fan of Donovan, Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, etc, from that era. These songs still elicit a real sense of nostalgia. Isn’t music an incredible thing?
Thanks for mentioning Donovan's fingerstyle ability, Fil. The best album of his showcasing his wonderful fingerstyle talents is HMS Donovan, a cracking album, available from his official website.
Wonderful analysis and incredible guitar lesson ... the video is fantastic Crystal Gayle is my favorite Country singer; In addition to being one of the best in the genre for her wonderful voice that allows her to explore various musical genres, she is the first artist to authorize the Chinese Government in VrabR on the wall in the distant decade of the 70s .... Donovan is another great his guitar and harmonica performances are great mu had thanks for this splendid video and your comments 👌👌✔✔🔷🔶🌟⭐🎸🎸🎵🎼🎶♩🖒🖒🎤🎤❤❤❤🌷🌷🌷....sorry about your computer💻💻⌨⌨🖱🖱.....🤘👊🤘👊
Donovan has such a target rich environment of songs to choose from. From Sunshine Superman to Barabajagel (with the Jeff beck Group). Such a talent and can mesmerise you for a concert with just guitar, harmonica, vocals and songs.
Crystal Gail. Total Stunning. Have you seen Vince Gill/Patty Loveless at the George Jone tribute. I think I see why music touches your heart. Vince was hurting, so in the solo, he poured his heart into it. I used this video so I could message. I like the lesson
I really liked Donovan, always wished he had been much more a 'part of the scene' and not faded away. Comparing him to Bob Dylan was just the wrong thing to do, to my mind they were different. I always believed that this comparison worked against him, not sure if that's right or not. Mellow Yellow suited my state of mind in those days.
She has that ability to sing very soft and sweet, but also with a lot of power when called for. Listent to her versions of Cry, and Cry Me a River, and Take It Easy (Loving Me), and also the end of the clip of Night Life, with B.B. King from her first CBS TV special in 1979, which is on TH-cam (but not on her albums).
Thanks Fil, learned Donovan's fingering of A chord from music book(can't remember name of) with intro by Robert Fripp, easy chord changes A, D, E, with first finger planted on G string.
I used to have Donovan's greatest hits on vinyl. Great singer and songwriter. And Crystal has a wonderful voice and presence! Still hoping to hear "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" in a future reaction if possible.
nice one Fil. hadn't seen it. Crystal beautiful voice. Brown Eyes Blue or Half the Way her big ones. Donovan some groovy songs. Superman, Mello Yellow, Hurdy Gurdy Man, my favorites. Thought they blended well together. There is a clip of Donvan playing Superman with Jimmy Page from a few years ago which is fun to watch since Jimmy was on the original. Of course Donovan part of The Beatles Maharishi trip and taught John Lennon some chords which integrated into the White Album and Plastic Ono Band solo album from what I've read.
Phil, being you are a rocker, you can appreciate this. 4/4 time makes the body move front to back (i.e. head bangers). 3/4 makes the body sway side to side. Try head banging to a 3/4 tune. Can't be done. .:)
He looks like Bob Dylan at first in this video. I have Atlantis on one of my playlists. I never knew what tremolo was until now so thanks for that. Always a bit of new information in each analysis!
Was a nice duet. Yr much younger than I aware of Donavans recordings? Sunshine Superman, Mellow yellow, Wear yr love like Heaven and my favorite Hurdy Hurdy Man. Always dug his songs. Im flabbergasted Crystal became totally forgotten. Incredible voice, had a few very good songs in 70s. Guess didn't get the right promoter. She's the younger sister of singing great Loretta, Lynn. Keep up the good work.
Brilliant analysis! May I humbly suggest you just check out a lovely little known gem on you tube of Kenny Rankin singing "Peaceful" live. It was his own composition, covered by others including Georgie Fame, but in my opinion, this live version, sung in what looks like a late night club with Kenny accompanying himself alone on acoustic guitar is breath-taking.
A beautiful song well performed and a fine workman’s analysis of it. Still, despite, or perhaps due to the beauty of the piece, it strikes me as being very bittersweet. It’s said that the sense of smell can invoke the fullest and sharpest of memories. If that’s true, then music is a very close second. I remember when that song first hit the airwaves and how much I liked it then. It’s difficult to listen to without being aware of all of the dead past between then and now (and how much longer the time that’s been is compared to what is left). Donovan and Gayle sound so good together that it would have been nice if they’d recorded together. Their voices blend so well (and now I know why; thank you). But, speaking of recording, it would have been fun to have heard the tale of how Donovan ended up on Alice Cooper’s “Billion Dollar Babies.” Anyway, another great episode, looking forward to the next one! Peace. 😎
Here's another. I saw John Hartford at Mariposa in Barrie back in the eighties. The quadruple threat: songwriter, singer, banjo picker (guitar and fiddle, too), and clogger. Really interesting on stage. Cheers.
*NOTICE*! My computer has thrown a wobbly in the intro and somehow Fleetwood Mac's intro is being used! So I have removed it, we'll jump straight into it. (the edit takes a few hours to complete)

I'm glad to know I hadn't done something weird and accidentally gone back to your last analysis. 🙃👍
It’s all good man . We’re human. This was beautiful Fil . One can “ The raw emotions in their harmony’s . “
I’ve never heard this before. It’s really soothing.
Thanks again man ! ❤️☮️
It’s all good. 🤟Just a glitch in an otherwise perfect track record and analysis.🤟🤟
@@bargell Actually, I agree. The logo graphic/music first, talking intro, then analysis.
What a terrific review of this very rare and classic duet. Two music legends for sure. Musical honey to the ear !!!
Holy cats, what a rare gem. Such a wonderful and refreshing performance. THank you.

For me it's. When rain has hung the leaves with tears.
Donovan is one of my favourites and this clip is great! Wonderful analysis Fil!
A beautiful duet singing a lovely song.
I've loved this duet since ages! Such interesting blend of voices, a delicate rendition and Crystal at her absolute best: subtle, responding and incredibly beautiful!!❤
thanks for reacting to this. Donovan's EP, Hurdy Gurdy man, was the second record i ever bought. i've never seen this performance. beautiful
Saw Donovan live in Reno 1986. Great performance! He opened with Goldwatch Blues. One of my favorites of his.
That was a terrific performance of a classic song! Good analysis as always!
I'm a longtime fan of Crystal Gayle. It's a great duet with Donovan. Thanks for this analysis video. Cheers, Fil!
Sir Fil !!!!!! You've outdone yourself now !!!! I grew up listening to Donovan, and just got a cd of his greatest hits....this was a gorgeous rendition of Catch The Wind !!!! His Greatest hits don't fit on one CD.
Thanks!
First time I’ve seen this Fil and totally enjoyed it! Their voices really compliment each other and they sound sensational as a duet! Brilliant! Cheers Mario! 😀👌🤘
Thanks Fil. I always learn a lot from your deliveries. BTW nice Maton you have there
Great report and research, Fil! You're my fave analyzer. I was around in the 60's and remember some kid in gym class singing " Mellow Yellow"... 😁 I have all of Donovan's old stuff on vinyl..
Beautiful duet, Crystal Gayle has a terrific voice. Very nice performance, Donovan has that Bob Dylan style with his harmonica.
Such a sweet video...so peaceful....Love them both..they are both comming from a place of calmness and honesty.....thank you Fil,....Just what we all needed.
I love this, and your analysis is always spot on for vocals and instrumentals.
Really grateful to you for finding these wonderful performances - why did I never see this before???
Donovan! Oh my what beautiful memories his music brings to us who were alive back in the day. God bless you, Donovan! Thanks, Fil!

I've become a Donovan fangirl these last few months in lockdown. Love him

But I remember hearing Crystal and thought she had one of the most beautiful voices I'd ever heard. I honestly think she was better than her sister. Always loved and still love Donovan's. Her sister Loretta encouraged Crystal to go into other genres than country because of her vocal ability, which Loretta admitted she could not do.

Donovan has always been fairly popular but greatly underrated. He's as good or better than Bob Dylan but lesser known.
Awesome choice Fil and thank you for it. Down the memory lane with my all time favorite. In the early 70's, Donovan was called Bob Dylan of Great Britain.
I saw Donovan open for Yes back in the late 70's. Interesting combination. He was great!

I saw Donovan open for Yes. Full band. Late 70's.
I was surprised at how good the set was. He was great.
Beautiful video. You're amazing, Fil. What a teacher. You make a good video great. Sorry about the injury to your finger. Hope it gets well soon.
I learn so much from every video you post!
Thanks! 😎🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦

I have always appreciated Donovan. Unlike so many performers that I first heard in the 60's I still do. His poetry was pretty good. Crystal can sing
I was needing something beautiful and relaxing to listen to and this was waiting for me. 😊 Thank you so very much for sharing this Fil.
Never saw this clip before.
Thanks Fil for all you do.

Thanks Fil... that was great. An incredible artist👍... or should I say 🤘
Donovan has such a target rich environment of songs to choose from. From Sunshine Superman to Barabajagel (with the Jeff beck Group). Such a talent and can mesmerise you for a concert with just guitar, harmonica, vocals and songs.

I agree that Donovan can captivate his audience well over 30 minutes.
Crystal Gail. Total Stunning. Have you seen Vince Gill/Patty Loveless at the George Jone tribute. I think I see why music touches your heart. Vince was hurting, so in the solo, he poured his heart into it. I used this video so I could message. I like the lesson
What a great choice ... and Crystal Gayle ... Wow! ... what a Beauty :)
CRYSTAL GAYLE IS MY ALL TIME FAVORITE SINGER AND ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMEN IVE EVER SEEN
I Love her!
Great harmonizing.. 👍
Once in a lifetime 2 people like this come together
I know I love this one, just a note that a bit of the Fleetwood Mac intro has sneaked in preceding it. "Sweet spot" indeed!
I tried to sway a lot girls at my high school with this song. Did pretty well with it. Thanks. Don.
Donovan, John Sebastian and Dylan were the Folk song writers of my generation.
Her voice seems to have a lot of power.
Thanks Fil, learned Donovan's fingering of A chord from music book(can't remember name of)
with intro by Robert Fripp, easy
chord changes A, D, E, with first finger planted on G string.
I used to have Donovan's greatest hits on vinyl. Great singer and songwriter. And Crystal has a wonderful voice and presence! Still hoping to hear "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" in a future reaction if possible.
wow this is amazing. Whatever happened to Crystal Gale? I loved Donovan's music, saw him live he was great,
Analysis Request - Donovan performing 'Colours' with Nana Mouskouri. Thanks Fil!
nice one Fil. hadn't seen it.
Hè touht John to fingerpick .
I just viewed the clip. Amazing. Then Jimmy Page dropped his pick and the whole world held its breath.
There seems to be plenty of material to make an analysis video of Crystal Gayle. A good starting point for a search would be her 1979 special on CBS.
Very good analysis. Job well done Pil
Phil, being you are a rocker, you can appreciate this. 4/4 time makes the body move front to back (i.e. head bangers). 3/4 makes the body sway side to side. Try head banging to a 3/4 tune. Can't be done. .:)
Two great influences working there: Bob Dylan and Loretta Lynn....hard to top that. Great analysis Fil.
It took me years to get Crytal out of my mind. Now I'm back to square one. My shrink will be able to buy another lake cabin soon
Lol....
He looks like Bob Dylan at first in this video. I have Atlantis on one of my playlists. I never knew what tremolo was until now so thanks for that. Always a bit of new information in each analysis!
HAIL ATLANTIS!! 🧜♀️🧜♂️ I LOVE Donovan's story telling in that beautiful song!! 🥰👍
Two different genres coming other to produce pure magic!!!
Beautiful!!!
Cheers.
Thanks for the lesson!
