I like to drastically switch up the tightness of my trucks for a session or two every so often. It seems counter-intuitive but I feel like it helps my skating overall. Like mentioned in the video, when I ride super tight trucks it helps me focus on landing clean and being centered over my board. Then when I ride really loose trucks it helps me focus on balancing on my feet and controlling my pop. Then when I go back to my "medium" tightness trucks I just feel like a better skater overall. Something about changing up the stimulus for my brain helps me learn everything better.
I totally agree because I think skating any tightness is going to help your coordination and muscle memory to understand how to compensate for whatever is thrown your way. Going back and forth will help in different areas.

Bones Hard Conical bushings are one secret to perfect, tight trucks. Andy Anderson showed me that and it made all my skateboards much better. They always spring back to center, ride true, tight and keep the same geometry because the bolt will be flush with the nut. I tried throwing the metal washers out and just using the built in one and realized it’s strong AF the way they fuse it to the bushing. Thank Andy for the pro tip 😉👍👍

Better stability and better pop and flick . No wheelbite when landing so you don’t get thrown off the board which you don’t want to happen in a contest

I skate a medium tight back truck and a medium loose front truck. Jamie Thomas turned me on to that combo. But too tight of truck's do not allow for the proper rebound when skating off drops and too loose of trucks mess with stability and consistency when popping tricks.
A tight truck would be in the tineist bit harder when landing but i dont think youd be able to notice. Tight trucks make you do tricks clean and proper. Tip: practice on a setup with "tight trucks", and skate a setup with "looser trucks", or not, but 3 days of practice and 4 days of just skating. If you don't have practice days your creative mind doesn't have much to be creative with. Practice day priorities: 1. Pick a trick, 2. Land the trick 5 times in a row, 3. Now clean up the trick, 4. Always had the tightest trucks of my friend group. All street skaters. Never felt hindered in any way whatsoever. In fact I found it very helpful for flip tricks. Tricks where you have to really put just your toe on the board, like tre flips and double flips, were much easier to balance and get a good flick out of. But in the end, like shoes, I really think it's just a preference thing and there's no "better" way really
Tight trucks & skinny deck is a certain street feel that ogs know. Came to this realization when skating with my homie from back in the day who doesn't care about skate trends. In contrast, I've completely changed my setup up to modern standards. Maybe not for the better because my buddy picked up where he left off & I'm not even close to where I was. He killed it casually skating with tight ass trucks and the skinniest deck. He literally skated a 20 y/o set up that was lent to him while he was visiting the city. Controlled tic tacs with a pump to maintain speed is a unique style. The flicks on fliptricks were so fast they looked like 1.5x speed. Kickflipped up anything. It's a mad unique style because tricks are harder to land but the board feels more in control. Very raw but in control if that makes sense. Also he was like "what fuck that?!" when I said nobody's doing front 180s. We agreed in street skating after you ollie something that's the next step. "No f/s 180s" is park culture not street skating culture. f/s 180s or tic tacs are still stylish if you're in control. Like Jamie Thomas f/s 180s didn't hand in the 90 position the whole time it was a fluid motion. Same with tic tacs they look as good as swerving if done with purpose & control. But yeah with tight trucks your consistency tanks & transitions are a write off... but you're still more in control (especially when the bushings are worn in). You'll land and jump off more but attempts are close more often. I'm gonna mess around with tight trucks again & see how it goes. I got some footage & it was a refreshing & nostalgic change.
As a kid in the 90’s and early 2000’s I would always skate my trucks super tight. Always skated Ventures and Royal. Now I skate Indy stage 11’s and have them really loose. Been just getting comfortable being on the board again, and the challenge of loose trucks, was the best thing I could’ve done.
Tight defiantly benefits drops and flip tricks. But loose trucks provide so much style. Nothing sicker than seeing someone carve in before a trick with full control
Basically y’all if you’re gonna sesh and yk you’re going to try things off of ledges or grind something, tighten your trucks. If you’re just cruising around then loosen your trucks. Personally idgaf about style or whatever, I ride whatever I feel comfortable with and tight trucks are usually my go to. Although I will say it’s a lot more difficult to revert or powerslide with tight trucks so keep that in mind
I remember going to the skatepark and people talking shit on my tight trucks. I just liked it because they helped me flip my board better and it felt comfortable to ride
Tighter trucks force you to try and land cleaner as opposed to looser trucks that allow you to get away with sketchier landings, mainly for people who want to discipline themselves to clean up their landing.
@@mikecynic5167 lol im 48,im still not used to it,i have one deck set up with loose trucks, and i really try to get used to it,but i cant afford to break a hip at this point in life😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 cheers!
Ive always had tighter trucks and there are pros and cons. I encourage people to experiment with tightness and loseness on both ends. Nyjah is tight while daewon has his set up loose in front and tight in back (like a car)
I have them pretty loose (indy super soft bushings) with the front a tad looser (like 2 turns or something with soft bushings), it really makes steering alot smoother and you can really get into those tight corners. The difference shouldn't be too much that it becomes a problem with riding fakie. I recommend a setup like that to everyone, for tight trucks too.
Last time i had somthing like that happen to my trucks. I legit tighted them as much as I could then took a hack saw and removed the hangoff so I could still do truck grinds
the only issue with super tight has been tick tacking a bunch. i feel like i can roll away from flatground and rails/boxes a lot smoother with medium tightness. with super tight its either i land it or it doesnt work
I like when trucks are loose, because I can avoid rocks very easily. But when the hills appear, I lose control, and I really like hills. That's why I would like my trucks to be very tight, but when I tighten too much, my board doesn't go straight... So I have to go medium tight.
I skate thunders with bones hard bottom bushings and bones medium top bushings. Then I tighten my back truck and leave the front a bit more loose. The perfect combo for me.
I’m a taller skater but I always skated tight trucks. Mainly because with my added weight from my height, the trucks would still get somewhat loose after it breaks in. Don’t get me wrong, loose trucks are fine but tight trucks never gave me any trouble lol.
I Rock tight ventures with the new CONICAL Shorty's Doh Doh 100A black bushings. I am 5'9" and 185 lbs. They turn a little bit and I tic tac turn mostly. ZERO speed wobbles!!! Super fast!
I like my trucks pretty tight. Back basically cranked all the way down, front one loose enough to turn with. I prefer to tick-tack around instead of leaning into stuff. I mean there isssss toooo tight, I have that front one loosened enough to turn but I step on other people's boards and it's so squirrely and so loose
Always skated tight trucks, it was just natural for me. Whenever I would skate other people's decks I would always notice the trucks were never as tight as mine and wonder how the hell they skate on this thing.
I'm a tight truck fan. Might be because I'm 6'2" and 200 lbs. Part of the reason I love indys. Can have firm bushings that make the board really stable, but still easy to turn sharp
i learned how to skate switch so easily after i tightened my trucks. but i hated the feeling so much. i dont care if i can do switch varials now, im addicted to turning so i had to go back
Always just bought trucks and never touched them. They loosen as you ride. For me it always helped get the feel of the trucks. Plus if you wallie alot you kind of break your back truck at a certain point
I’ve been skating with my trucks tight for a very long time. Since the 90’s haha. For one I’m a heavier skater going between 190 to 210 depending on how much I’m skating haha. The other reason is I do a lot of flat ground tricks. Most people say you can do flip tricks easier with loose trucks. Somewhat true. The beginning is easier, the end not so much. My landings are much smoother with tight trucks. Plus there are some tricks you just can’t do with loose trucks. Crazy tricks like one foot 360 shuvit, or hang ten 360 shuvit. Basically oddball tricks no one does haha. Keep skating 😃👍 To each their own 😃👍
the problem i have with loose trucks is trying to do tricks and super fast speeds you need to be really stable , but with doing this I feel like it also teaches you to be more stable on the board .
No disrespect by this question as I am generally curious how long you have been skating for? But also your board size to shoe size and lastly are your board and trucks with the same width? I've been skating (rolling around) as long as I can remember, but I started cracking ollie's and other "tricks" at about 12, so I've been doing the trick side for about 23 years now. I went from super tight trucks, side comment; I broke both hangars on a brand new pair of grind king axls when they came out by kickflipping off a picknick table over like 3 foot of grass only weighing 130 pounds so after that happened I started asking the older skaters or shop riders why that happened and why I was breathing kingpins. They told me to loosen up the trucks and I would stop breaking them and grinds would be easier as well as my balance being better except for gaps. And soon after that I also started writing an 8-in board because I only wear size 8 and 1/2 shoes. Both of those things made me quite a bit better and I haven't been able to regress towards tight trucks again. And that's why I'm curious for both those questions I mentioned. I've tightened them up for bombing big hills and gap skating but generally go back to lose or maybe towards medium. And question is out to everyone else too and I'm interested because I'm old lol
Been meaning to comment on your vids forever, they get me pumped. Skated NOTHING but tight trucks for 25 yes and it's the only way to go if you want to be able to do more technical stuff
I normally switch out my bushings between different sessions pending on what i'm skating. For example, if I'm doing manuals I'll skate bones hard bushings at the back to help with greater stability when setting up for tricks to do out the manual. However, for nose manuals, I ride mediums and loose because I feel that I can manipulate my balance a lot better with looser trucks. For ledges, I tried tight trucks (riding hard bones bushings) but found that for some reason it was difficult to lock in consistently on certain tricks because the tightness of the truck meant that I couldn't manipulate the truck on the ledge for certain tricks. Instead the truck would resist any weight fluctuation and constantly tip over as opposed to moulding around the ledge. The same applies to when I skate rails.
I like tight trucks just to keep the board a little more stable when i go to pop a trick. The board wont lean down when i load up the pop with my front and back foot. It feels like im trying to steer while loading up with loose trucks. Instead of my feet being relaxed they already applying extra pressure to keep the board from turning or leaning. Thats pretty much only reason i have tight trucks
Watch clips of him. He carves into some of his in lines. I heard him years ago say he rides them tight but he’s not tic tacking. So they are not fully cranked
when i buy trucks i level the nut with the kingpin and never change them after that. when you level the nut with the kingpin you get an easier time on smiths and feebles. after a few months any truck will get worn out and feel looser than new trucks when tight.
I tighten my trucks as much as the bushing will allow me to without blowing out. Skating in the mid to late 80s almost everyone had tight trucks. Loose trucks are a new thing. I don't get why tic tacs are a problem.
People dont like to tick tack to turn. I skate hard bushings now before i had them crushed. I skate them looser than i did when i started but im at where i want with them.
I usually ride my board with tight trucks. But after entering the skate trick territory, I had to go for average tightness. Way too loose trucks are just way too unstable for cruising for me, and super tight trucks makes it almost impossible to carve. After finding that good ol' sweet spot, I just never touched my bushings again

Right now I'm riding Bones medium bushings tightened flush with the kingpin. This strategy works well for me.
I skate super tight trucks, and when I was skating everyday in highschool, I could do almost every single flat ground flip trick.
Ill tell u what i love. Your vids. Keep up the good work
I love tight trucks… gotta hate wheel bite
I remember going to the skatepark and people talking shit on my tight trucks. I just liked it because they helped me flip my board better and it felt comfortable to ride
It's good to tighten your trucks when learning to ollie as well.
Tighter trucks force you to try and land cleaner as opposed to looser trucks that allow you to get away with sketchier landings, mainly for people who want to discipline themselves to clean up their landing.
Ive skated tight trucks since day 1 now 40 years later im tryin to go the other way lol cheers!
When you get used to loose trucks you'll love them. You can actually ride your board instead of being locked in.
@@mikecynic5167 or wheel bite and fall constantly
@@davidmatousek4483 You get used to it. I just use a thin shock riser and it takes care of the wheelbite pretty well.
I used to when I was younger but as I got older loose feels better to me. Also cool to see your son and girl make a cameo
Always loved tight trucks for street skaters I think they are better than loose
that skateboard nose feature in the back corner looks like a lot of fun. i skate tight trucks.
If tensor did a 99A bushing for their magnesium trucks, oh man. Perfect.
Last time i had somthing like that happen to my trucks. I legit tighted them as much as I could then took a hack saw and removed the hangoff so I could still do truck grinds
Haha dude most frustrating two hours of my life
the only issue with super tight has been tick tacking a bunch. i feel like i can roll away from flatground and rails/boxes a lot smoother with medium tightness. with super tight its either i land it or it doesnt work
I like when trucks are loose, because I can avoid rocks very easily. But when the hills appear, I lose control, and I really like hills. That's why I would like my trucks to be very tight, but when I tighten too much, my board doesn't go straight... So I have to go medium tight.
I've only ever rode tight trucks. Way more stanle for speed. I've slowly loosened them over time but still tight
Medium to medium tight, best of both worlds.
I skate thunders with bones hard bottom bushings and bones medium top bushings. Then I tighten my back truck and leave the front a bit more loose. The perfect combo for me.
Where it’s at for sure. I’ve always skated tight trucks. I felt there was more stability, predictability and the pop in the tail was more centered.
I grew up sk8ing in the 80’s and 90’s and nobody skated loose trucks. At least not stupid loose like they do now.
Love your personality, great vibes, keep up the good work, and keep skating 👍
3:42 Holy sh!t! Dude's skating at the edge of a cliff! 😨😝
Tight trucks def make it easier to scoop for tre/360 shuv but it makes the landing, imo, very hard
I've always been a tight truck guy. Gradually moving towards looser trucks because I want to tick-tack less and get away with more imperfect landings.
New park was sick
Personnaly I have always prefered to skate really tight trucks because It really helps me to keep your shoulders straight until I pop my tricks
Tight trucks 4ever. Bones hard fam
That mini ramp looks delicious.
I like skating with tight trucks. 😌 thought it was just me who did this for a while.
I’m a taller skater but I always skated tight trucks. Mainly because with my added weight from my height, the trucks would still get somewhat loose after it breaks in. Don’t get me wrong, loose trucks are fine but tight trucks never gave me any trouble lol.
Watching skaters who have loose trucks is so much sicker. Ex: Deedz t funk
check out max palmer
Most normal dudes with super loose trucks are sloppy and squirly shout out to the real sk8 masters
ducky kovacs, he even takes out one of the bushings
I think it’s the aces too. Makes the turns so much more sharp.
Shredding mate 😎 Keep it up!!
Thanks man!
Man you killed it though great content! Definitely will have to try this out.
I love tight trucks idc what anyone says you can go really fast around the park and not feel unstable
Always skated tight trucks, it was just natural for me.
Whenever I would skate other people's decks I would always notice the trucks were never as tight as mine and wonder how the hell they skate on this thing.
For beginner it's good to ride tight then go to médium trucks little by little it's matter of comfort and finding your center
Keep skating 😃👍 To each their own 😃👍
Super tight trucks = max technical control which is how Nyjah skates... super technical ! 😛🤙
the problem i have with loose trucks is trying to do tricks and super fast speeds you need to be really stable , but with doing this I feel like it also teaches you to be more stable on the board .
And build ankle strength and mobility as well
No disrespect by this question as I am generally curious how long you have been skating for?
Tell that to Daewon Song bro.
@@91son92 Daewon is a literal machine and skates super loose trucks to keep himself challenged and interested after killing it all these year's
@@91son92 been into his shit since I bought Rodney mullen vs daewon song round 2 on vhs in 2000
@@zacharymorgan9526 same here , got inspired to skate cause of that shit!
Tight low truck and some 50mm wheels on a 8" board or less.. EA Sports baby, you in the game!
lol tought it was just me, i use to get on a loose truck board and i would be like "this dont work"
Watch clips of him. He carves into some of his in lines. I heard him years ago say he rides them tight but he’s not tic tacking. So they are not fully cranked
Agreed. I was gonna comment that Nyjah's truck don't look that tight, and neither do these dude's.
this is so sick man I hope you don't quit
I’ve always skated with tight trucks it helps with my balance and foot placement don’t knock it till you try it.
You are very well spoken homie. Nice video
Please do Daewon’s front truck set up.
This is my local. And it is way better than the old one that we had😂
In the 90s us Love park skaters had tight ass trucks and 39 to 42 mm wheels😂😂😂
when i buy trucks i level the nut with the kingpin and never change them after that. when you level the nut with the kingpin you get an easier time on smiths and feebles. after a few months any truck will get worn out and feel looser than new trucks when tight.
Very nice insight, thank you!
didnt know your ledge game was so strong that back 5-0 on the ledge was proper
I skate my back truck tighter then the front to get benifits from both ways
