Canadians cringe every time we hear an American say “Toronto, Canada” or any Canadian city, followed immediately by Canada.
But we love it when we hear an American get it right and say “Toronto, Ontario, Canada”.
Beyond that, if the American doesn’t add “Canada” at all, and just says “Toronto, Ontario” we nearly pass out with glee!

The most complicated matter is the whole television deal. Toronto/Canada is a large market that is being served by Canadian broadcasters. The NFL is a cash cow because of the television money, so it depends on how that all shakes out with the Canadian networks.
The attendance issues with the Bills series was the crazy price gouging in combination with really poor matchups on the schedule. The prices for example were 2-3x higher than tickets from other NFL teams. Prior to this series, the NFL American Bowl exhibition games in Toronto (Bills vs Green Bay, Bills vs. Cowboys) were sold out.

TV for a Toronto team would either go to TSN/CTV or Sportsnet/CityTV, and I think the former already has the simulcast for ESPN Monday Night Football. Toronto television also already carries all 4 over the air network affiliates from Buffalo (WUTV, WGRZ, WIVB, and WKBW) so however the national schedule works out we would be fine. Realistically though we’re in Buffalo’s market and we likely don’t want to change the status quo for football.

As for how this fits in to the existing TV contracts, not sure why it should really matter because most games on any given Sunday are regional broadcasts. If for example the Vikings were playing in Toronto, the FOX NFL team would cover the afternoon game like normal and it would be shown regionally, while a Canadian broadcast team could do it as well.

If they get a team, it’s gotta be a mascot that the NFL doesn’t have from a current team and it’s gotta be a team name and mascot that the locals in Toronto will like. Now, many may automatically switch their allegiance to the Toronto team if the city landed an NFL franchise, but the NFL currently makes good money broadcasting NFL games in Canada and selling tons of merchandise for various teams across the country: Bills, Seahawks, Cowboys, Raiders, Steelers, Vikings, Patriots, etc., so you already have a solid NFL fan base across the country.

As someone from Toronto, I think it is unlikely, but could happen if things fall into place. I think the biggest obstacle is what does this mean for the Toronto Argonauts? Yes, they are not as popular as the other Toronto sports teams, but they have the most history with the team being born back in 1873, and is also the CFL team that has won the most Grey Cups. I am not sure or do not know if the CFL team will survive if the NFL team comes to Toronto (I feel like a lot of the popularity of the Argos was lost to the Toronto Blue Jays over the years, which might be the closest example). I know that there might be plans for a second major professional soccer stadium in the GTA with both York United FC and maybe potentially the new AFC Toronto team being tenants for that stadium, which may or may not impact the potential of building an NFL stadium in Toronto.

Honestly the Greater Toronto area has a higher population than 6.3 million, closer to 9 million.
Right now the CFL Toronto Argonauts are the last team standing in the Toronto market. Hockey is king but Baseball and Basketball are strong here. Toronto FC have passed the Argos in terms of popularity recently.
Will the Govt fight this? I dunno. Our Premier (governor) spent a lot of time in Chicago and the entire family are football fanatics. Rob Ford, brother of Doug was, in addition of being an idiot, drug addict and world renowned moron, he coached high school football in Toronno.
When he was mayor he made sure that when the Argos won the Grey Cup they received the kind of party that the hockey Maple Leafs could only dream of.
I have no doubt in my mind that the NFL could thrive in Toronto and Montreal (it's extremely popular at the high school and college in Quebec) and maybe Vancouver or even Calgary.
There is still a great deal of love for the CFL in Canada and it would die if the Argos left.
Finally, there are alot of Bills fans in the GTA, more so in the Niagara Region but fans across the country don't like rooting for Toronto teams. Being able and easy to bet made football popular here (not up here because Toronto lines up with Southern Oregon in lat long) .
Personally I'm not a huge fan of football, I grew up in Montreal as a Als fan but in the 70's and 80's we would get lots of Giants, Jets, Patriots and Bills games on TV.
Being from the era I liked the Steelers and Bills, sometimes the Pats.
It would succeed here but at what cost.

He loves football as well, I think he's a Bears fan. I'm not sure that he would back an NFL expansion team here because of the CFL
P.S. the city (2.9 million) and GTA (9 million) could easily support another NHL team, maybe 3 like Greater New York. It's come close but the Leafs and Sabres always scream for huge money to let another team into the market.
Cities like Mississauga (1m), Hamilton (575,000), Kitchener Waterloo (500,000 at least) and York Region (1 million plus) could host a team here.

There's no room and there's certainly no money for a "super stadium". The last two major brownfield sites - the Portlands and Downsview - are being redeveloped. The City of Toronto has a budget deficit of CAD $1.5bn. There is zero appetite among taxpayers for subsidizing a stadium (we did that with Sky Dome, only for Rogers to buy it for pennies). So any stadium would be outside the city, Mississauga, Vaughn, Markham, and these places lack good regional or local transit links: would be a 1970s-style stadium where 75% of the site is parking, and thousands more cars clogging an already clogged regional highway system. Then Bills owner Ralph Wilson would have kept the Toronto series going indefinitely as he loved the money it gave him. When Terry Pegula took over ownership as a goodwill gesture to WNY he canceled the series. It's likely he also had a new stadium in mind as by treating the fan base to a full season of home games he would generate goodwill when he "stuck it" to NY state for funds to build it. And don't blame Toronto for not selling out the Buffalo "series". The team STUNK big time at that time and the ticket prices were incredibly overpriced. A feasibility study was done at the time the Bills were up for sale and Bon Jovi and a group of bankers were making a bid to buy the team after Ralph Wilson's death showed that there would have been a waiting list to buy seating licenses and corporate boxes for a Toronto NFL team.

Rogers thought that because it was the NFL that southern Ontario consumers would pay whatever price they asked for.
There’s a few problems with this strategy, unlike London which is separated by a literal ocean to the US, a Toronto fan realistically doesn’t have to go that far to see an NFL game, even with the impedance factor crossing the border has. Even if the team WANTED to move(which they don’t they have a pretty good sized market being near Louisville, Lexington, and Dayton)they realistically can’t due to the legal logistics. It’s not a simple vote amongst owners like it would be for other teams they’d be opening a can of worms on the legal end and the NFL would rather not deal with that again. Not to mention most of their recent relocations have been received with mixed results, really only the Raiders was received well by both fans of the NFL and the league itself. The Chargers effectively killed their entire franchise with the move to LA, a far bigger market than that of San Diego. It’s not always about market size, the Bills and Packers have shown this. Relocation on the whole is also a really unpopular concept in America right now, with teams like the A’s relocating it has been a lot of drama in the media. Your best bet is expansion, and tbh it doesn’t look like the NFL is expanding any time soon so you’re probably in for the long haul. Buffalo is going to try everything in their power to stop yall from getting a team too, they have a fairly sizable canadian season ticket holder base which they’d likely lose if Toronto got a team. London having a team also likely isn’t the end goal, rather expansion of the sport to europe as a whole. London having a team logistically wouldn’t work, the time zone difference between there and the west coast is just too big to be in the same league. To give you an idea, it takes teams a whole year to prep just for the handful of games that take place there every year, would be a logistics nightmare if it was an ongoing thing throughout the season. Most NA sports leagues have been going abroad for exhibitions trying to expand their foreign footprint as historically like most things in NA they’ve been quite NA centric. Toronto also has one of the worst CFL attendance rates, currency conversion etc. Essentially there’s many factors that make Toronto unlikely to get a team before other American markets at this point in time.

@@scotttild You really believe that dude? You got to be a dope if you believe the NFL really cares that much about the CFL. The NFL is like any corporation they will put money over integrity. The NFL could buy the CFL to shut them up. That's not going to stop them from moving a team up there. Remember Ralph Wilson had a plan put together to move the Bills to Toronto, but he past away and it didn't come to fruition, that just tells you close Toronto was to getting a team. They don't play overseas games because there's no point. The stadiums aren't even NFL type stadiums that can generate revenue. If Toronto made a new stadium ready for an NFL team then there's a different case there.

Not happening. Rogers Centre has been remodeled for baseball only and BMO Stadium is not equipped for the NFL. Much less barriers expanding into other large US markets without teams. Toronto is big by Canadian standards, but there’s many markets in the US of comparable size without a team currently and there aren’t the legal/logistical barriers expanding there when compared to Canada. If the Jacksonville Jaguars stadium deal fails, Toronto would be top choice for Jaguars to relocate. Jaguars' owner already owns a Four Seasons hotel and other assets in Toronto. Because of Toronto's market size and east proximity, I believe Jaguars' owner would plunk down a billion or more of his own dollars to build a stadium there and high tail it out of Jacksonville. Only down factor would be the local politics of Toronto stopping the NFL to set up shop.

BMO Field is a hard no - the current home of the Argos of the CFL and Toronto FC of MLS will not want an NFL size stadium as it would be far too big. Maybe a new NFL stadium at Downsview Park? If not. you might consider tearing down the buildings on the CNE grounds (ironically at the same site as BMO Field) and build one there, but with the teardown, that would be extremely expensive. Third option is somewhere in the suburbs. NFL team would probably kill the Argos, though MLSE owns the Agros, so they could keep it alive even with annual losses as the CFL does do well re. TV ratings even if attendance at the BMO for Argo games is almost at Oakland A levels.

For every one Toronto, there are five US cities who would love to get a CFL team because they know that they'll never get an NFL team. The NFL doesn't want this and the CFL doesn't want the NFL in Canada so both leagues are happy with the arrangement and there is a friendly respect between them as they don't consider each other to be rivals or competitors.
