Like him, especially in Blade Runner and Blood Simple, but my favorite character actor is JT Walsh in Sling Blade.

Wow! He was a very successful actor. Totally recognizable, but I never knew his name. Very interesting!

I don't know if this counts but I always get a kick out of recognizing cartoon voice actors when they appear in small parts in non-cartoons, like Mae Questel who voiced Betty Boop, Little Lulu and Olive Oyl I think shows up in National Lampoon's Xmas Vacation and a couple Woody Allen movies, among other things, and the main voice cast of the Simpsons show up in movies now and then, like two of then are in that terrible 1998 American Godzilla movie for example.
And, of course, I always like seeing Harry Dean Stanton. And while Ray Wise can do lead roles, and has a stage acting career, aside from Twin Peaks, I mostly have seen him in small roles in horror and sci fi b-movies, and he always gives his best even for cheesy material, a real professional

Walsh is an example of a character actor sometimes generating such an expansive filmography that they get even more lost in the cumulative scenery than if their career had been more limited. My favorite film in which Walsh appeared and which I've seen is 'Blade Runner', one of the all-time great science fiction dramas, still haunting and perplexing fans more than forty years after its initial release. Walsh was perfectly cast as the police captain there.
Scanning the actor's filmography on his Wikipedia page, I note that he appeared in a film with one of my favorite actresses, Marion Eaton (1932-2011), in the obscure 1989 vampire movie 'Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat', which unfortunately I've never seen apart from a brief clip featuring Eaton. Eaton herself became in time a character actress in her rather circumscribed career, though she first came to attention as the star in the underground horror comedy 'Thundercrack!' (1975), her performance there being one of the great performances in cinema history.
Thank you for mentioning Joe Flaherty, an essential contributor to the comedy greatness of 'SCTV'. There are so many wonderful character actors and actresses in the annals of cinema, but some that presently come to mind for me include Margaret Hamilton (1902-1985), Ruth Gordon (1896-1985), Frank McHugh (1898-1981), Pat Hingle (1924-2009), Jack Weston (1924-1996), Mary Wickes (1910-1995), Ernest Thesiger (1879-1961), Ray Bolger (1904-1987), Mary Woronov (born 1943), and Estelle Parsons (born 1927). Good topic!

I was very sad to learn of Walsh's passing. I'm pretty sure Red Scorpion was the first movie I saw him in, and some time after I remember spotting him in a few episodes of Home Improvement, in which I think he played Jill's father. If you haven't seen it, I recommend checking out The Music of Chance. He plays a shady caretaker, which perfectly suits his repertoire.
