Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide;
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me.
Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;
Earth’s joys grow dim, its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see-
O Thou who changest not, abide with me.
I need Thy presence every passing hour;
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s pow’r?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

Henry Francis Lyte's immortal hymn on the Christian's hope in darkness remains one of the enduring favourites sung by millions worldwide.
God's promises through Christ, through suffering and death remain absolute, giving much needed hope and focus at this time of grieving and suffering worldwide.
The day before churches were shut down in Sydney, we very quickly recorded, with a very reduced and socially-distanced St Andrew's Cathedral Choir, several well-known hymns and psalms. Three decades ago, I went to a little church in Fremantle WA; since then, having lived in 3 different continents and numerous cities, including current NY for 20 yrs, I listen to this hymn back in Australia, which brings me back old memories and beyond, as if Scrooge’s flying alongside past ghost. Being a retired oncology/inpatient hospice nurse I was actually hopeful 3 years ago that humanity would learn a vital lesson, straighten out and fly right as the saying goes. 3 years later my hope is fading fast with each day that passes. 😢

Again beautiful but director's tempos are a bit speedy. Slow it down a bit. Still beautiful.

What's with the odd sudden forte in the middle of the last verse for no reason?

@@StAndrewsCathedralSydney I'm no great organist, but I find it hard to restrain myself once I get to the secod line of the last verse. A loud solo stop followed by thunder for the last two lines is the only way for me.
