I was at one of the Arctic Monkeys first gigs in Barnsley South Yorkshire. Before this came out. Thinking back to then it’s unreal how massive they became.
THIS is Arctic Monkeys. I recognize that AM is great music, but it never scratched me like their first two albums did and do. I won't even name tracks because they're all amazing. ''Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not'' and ''Favourite Worst Nightmare'' are amazingly good.

The whole of the first album bangs. These lads grew up a couple of miles down the road from where I am in Sheffield. Def Leopard played their first gig in my local working man’s club and Joe Cocker lived on the next street across from me. Sheffield is a proper music city.
I was at the front at that gig, my wife complained that people kept throwing beer, I pointed out that there was a 2 hour queue, both at the beer tent & at the toilets, & said "it aint beer" 😂 As rap fans you might appreciate an early banger from the 1st album called "A view from the afternoon" Double A side released on an EP just before the album release called, "Who the f@#£ are the arctic monkeys" 🫡 came out the day i 1st saw them in April 2005 at Londons Brixton Academy
I know you’ve heard it enough but you guys would NOT be mistaken to buy their debut vinyl, “Whatever people say I am, that’s what I’m not” you guys would eat that UP
Their first 2 albums are the best (Whatever People Say I Am..., and Favourite Worst Nightmare). You guys need to check out their songs Brainstorm, R U Mine, You & I, From The Ritz To The Rubble
I saw these boys at my local club in Carlisle UK back at the Brickyard in early 2k and honestly for a bunch of 20 somethings they were so tight and full.of energy. I bought the lead singer Akex a pint of beer and got some early press 1st vinyls signed and those BOYS were so frikkin cool and had no idea what was coming in that very year. Great times
Great band and their musical evolution is fantastic!! Incredible how they are still charting in the global music and keep being relevant after 20 years.
The band were not long out of school when this sent them to stardom, although they had a huge following here in Sheffield. They went to school about 5 minutes walk from my house, and once this song hit the charts, the place was swarming with journalists trying to find stories on them 😂
Jamie Cook used to get on our mini bus when we used to do a pub crawl in Hoyland before they were famous, when we got there first time he was mobbed by teenagers and we wandered who he was, hes also still on the pub wall in his football kit inside the Pack Horse at High Green
Guitar music evolved and grew and matured for over 50 years - with some of the greatest musical innovations and tunes we've ever known..... until the Arctic Monkey's came along and basically "completed" guitar music, to such an extent that few, not even themselves, bother with it anymore.
I went to a monkeys gig in Morecambe just as the first album was dropping, it was a surprise gig and I camped out all night with my mates. Maddest gig Iv ever been to. seen them a few more times since but that small venue exploded.
It's one of the songs, one of those performances that you just know it. you just know it's got it. Like the first time you hear Smells Like Teen Spirit or Creep or Killing in the Name Of. You don't need to hear them twice to get it.
When The Sun Goes Down is another banger! From the same album, and just as raw! These guys were a sensation when they first hit the scene with this track. It was so refreshing and different for the time.
Omg you just mentioned it sounds like they're in an Irish pub..Matt has bought the Irish pub called Finnegans here in Sheffield where theyre from!..☮️🇬🇧
Arctic monkeys did a song with dizzee called 'temptation treats you like your naughty mate' Don't think it made it to any type of print but was OK. Same way strokes dide 'mercy mercy me'
Great reaction! I’ve seen Arctic monkeys loads of times over the years - and the first 2 albums still have a special place for me! So much energy, this was fire back in the day! I saw them live twice last year and it was ‘different’! Still fire though!
Other Arctic Monkeys suggestions for you: 505, Crying Lightning, Teddy Picker, From the Ritz to the Rubble, Mardy Bum, Pretty Visitors, Library Pictures, R U Mine to name a few…. Hahaha. I grew up not far from Sheffield so have listened to them from the beginning & seen them live a few times - the older stuff is 100% worth a listen
I think to really appreciate this version you have to have heard the studio version first, both are great but to really see the passion in his performance you have to have heard the studio version.
Great T-Shirt bruh, i remember buying "Fear of a black planet" the day it came out, I was 14 then & i still hold "Welcome to the terrordome' as my fave rap track, Arctic Monkeys "A view from the afternoon" is a banger from the 1st album, also released in a 4 track EP called "Who the f@#£ are Arctic Monkeys?" it has a kind of Rap cadence to it,,
When they came out the buzz was similar to when Oasis came out. They were the next big thing coming out of the UK and it was incredible to witness both eras . I was lucky enough to see AM in 2006 at Kentish Town Forum around the release of their debut album and it was amazing, you had to turn up early afternoon to grab a wristband and proof of purchase which back then was almost unheard of! - there are a couple of grainy vids on TH-cam 😂
It was similar to Oasis in the sense that you knew these boys were going to be BIG but never really took off to that extreme, personally I think the Artic Monkeys were better but would’ve been huge if they were all born 8 or 9 years earlier. Immensely talented guys.
The beauty of the Arctic Monkeys is that each of their albums will be someone's favourite. Most fans will generally pick one of the first two and I can totally see why, they're incredible and WPSIATWIM perfectly encapsulated what it was like to be a regular 18/19 year old lad in the mid 00s but personally I think AM is their best, most complete album. I totally respect everyone is entitled to pick a different one as the no.1
I’d say Arctic Monkeys are the biggest band to come out of the U.K. this century tbh. As people have said, Alex was 19 when he released their debut album, which went on to become the fastest selling debut album in U.K. history at the time. You couldn’t do much wrong than watching their first Glastonbury headline- you can tell how young they are; dressed in tracksuits or jeans and jackets, like they’ve just come off the streets or from down the pub. Not many would dare to dress like that for their debut at (arguably) the biggest festival slot in the world.
They were the first band I could relate to due to that. A pair of sneakers a jean and a hoodie, long messy hair. Getting drunk at 15 the friday after school in a rainy western european city. À city ruined by the fall of the steel industry, drinking young, people using heroin, football. Damn those years were golden 😂
@@talkshitko9234 You're right about those bands but the original post says this century, so there's less competition since 2000. Coldplay and Muse might have sold more records and be more well known outside the UK I suppose, though "better" is subjective like all music.
In my humble opinion, WIIYSIATWIN (Album #1) is one of the greatest debut albums ever, the band were 15 or 16 yrs old when they put it together, It is brave and fabulous because Alex and the lads were fearless.
Early Arctic Monkeys are the sweet spot between early The Kinks, early The Jam, and Supergrass' first album, with equally good lyrics. All four managed to capture stories of contemporary English daily life with an acerbic style of lyrical poetry.
I feel like they did make it here but more for a certain age demographic. Their first album came out when I was in high school and have loved them since. They sold out 3 shows at the Forum in LA in September and it was one of my favorite shows I’ve seen. Quite a different genre but same musician; try The Last Shadow Puppets, it's a side-project of Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys) & Miles Kane (The Rascals). I suggest their first album The Age of the Understatement.
I loved the reaction! Arctic monkeys are so good imo! But I would like to recommend you listen to RM's new album "Right Place, Wrong Person" it comes out May 24!!💜
There’s a difference between the Arctic Monkeys that were proudly from Sheffield and the Arctic Monkeys that went and came back from America. Alex Turner used to be a cool teenager like this, just making music with his mates - now he’s a self entitled pretentious front man. I still like R U Mine and Do I Wanna Know is fine, but the earlier albums set very much in little old Sheffield with songs based on personal experience - that’s Arctic monkeys at their best.

Arctic Monkeys - Glastonbury 2007 “when the sun goes down” . 21 years old, youngest band to headline main stage.
