  • Due to a flood of questions Ive received on my instagram in regards to my core molds, I decided to make a quick video highlighting some of the main differences between my old rotocast/slush cast molds and updated core molds. Ill be showing two molds and their castings and give a blow by blow on the pros and cons between the two methods. I hope you find the video interesting and useful.
    Rotocast mold made with Smoothon Rebound 25 platinum silicone.
    Core mold made with BJB Enterprises TC-5130 platinum silicone.

    This is an awesome video and I'm definitely going to be looking to do a core mold for a current project especially because of it's complex shape.
    And I love the detail of the core mold version... And it looks like it was 3d printed

    Wath kind of resin you use for the cast of this helmet? Its urethane plastic?

    This is AWESOME!!! You should do a tutorial on how you mad the shell.

      It’s a possibility. But I’m no master so my video would be a lot of back and forth on the way I sculpt the shell. But I’ll see if I can screen record the next shell piece.

    how do you get the casting out of the core mold?

    • @DarkKnightFX
      @DarkKnightFX  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to remove some of the screws snd separate the top and bottom half of the core

    hi, great improvement on your technique! but i dont get how your closed molds have to take THAT much longer to make (besides looking really professional!). after all, isnt it just a two part mold with multiple shells? or did you do some fancy 3d printed matrix molding ? ;)

    • @DarkKnightFX
      @DarkKnightFX  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do fancy 3d printed matrix molding. But to answer your question it takes much longer because there is a lot more logistical planning that is required for the setup of the mold and flow patterns, air entrapment areas, undercuts that cause mechanical locking, pour spout placement and vent spout and such. With a brush on/rotocast mold you don’t have to worry about that at all.
      There is a labor aspect as well, with brush on molds you’re really only mixing the silicone and brushing it on. With these core molds your having to setup a sheet of clay in a specific thickness, both to make the mold strong enough to resist tearing, yet thin enough to roll over itself during demold. You also have to factor in undercuts and make those areas thicker so you don’t cause a mechanical lock with your shells. Until you do one yourself and figure out all your failures and where you need to focus your attention, you really can’t appreciate the sophistication of these core molds(depending on the complexity of the shape your molding). Now I used to do all this manually but I’ve been fine tuning my 3d skills and learning to create all my shells with 3d models and also even making custom spacers to make the manual parts a bit easier and more precise.

      @@DarkKnightFX thanks for the elaborate explaination! do you mean matrix mold or closed mold when saying core mold? im a big fan of matrix molds, especially if they look as crisp as yours! but why not brush on that second mold half on your helmet if it is that much faster? you can even refurbish the brush-on shells for a fresh and bubble free matrix-cast silicone skin - e.g for pressure casting (if you can find a tank in that size!). planning ventilation is definitely justified - with thin parts like this i can really recommend low point injection! i actually have a 2-part video about much of this (german with english subtitles) - maybe you can use some of it! th-cam.com/video/nPJ49fqvayg/w-d-xo.html

    • @DarkKnightFX
      @DarkKnightFX  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheZahnputz I mean closed core. So it only has to be filled via injection or via large enough pour spout with adequate vents. I inject my resin with syringes and then I put them into a pressure pot as I have a pair of 10 gallon pots.

    • @DarkKnightFX
      @DarkKnightFX  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheZahnputz just watched your video and it’s very much like that, but since my pieces have to be hallow inside, it also has a shell on the inside that closes off the mold and allows me to capture details on both the inner and outer surfaces of the pieces being molded. So it’s an exact same replication both inside and out.
