I recently sold my 40 acre parcel about 5 miles behind the flying AA to the south. final payment was just after the fires. I was sure they would walk away and I would be stuck with a burned out piece of property. but no, they Paid me off. but the cabin my dad had built was gone along with all the timber except the Oaks, and Madrone trees. I was happy to see both of your videos on the Ruth area.
I flew there in 1978 - though I doubt much has changed. I didn't fly a typical traffic pattern, it was easier to just descend into the canyon, following the river. Sort of like the ending on Star Wars when they were going into the crevices of the Death Star. IIRC the late George Kennedy-avid pilot, used to have some ranch near there.
Loved seeing that old Bonanza. My Dad had Bonanzas all thru my childhood...”If” I remember correctly we first had an A model, then a C, and finally an M. The time period was btw 1953 and 1969. We even took it to Fairbanks from Oakland, Ca...a trip I will always remember.
SO cool to camp and fly. Beautiful view. Now every pilot is going to go there. You should get a commission on the sale. So neat to have that wilderness around a runway. Great video.
Love the music choice at the end. Nice. Always wanted to fly into Ruth. Maybe, God willing, I'll get my Ridge Runner up there this spring. Happy adventures Jaun. Dennis Warner
Thanks Juan, ...Your posts are perfectly therapeutic! ... We all need a break from the crazy stuff all over the net, the alternative and main stream media news.
Love these surprises, "no particular reason for it, let's just film a landing and standing around". Smiling here, thinking about times I have done something similar. Thanks, Juan.
You inspired me to head up there last Saturday. It was on my bucket list for a couple years. Very rugged terrain between Gravelly Valley and there! Very cool. I landed the opposite way, which was quite a nice surprise approach. Looks dead up there and they no longer have it for sale.
The most enjoyable 5 minutes I've had since arriving home from my extended travels was watching that video! Squeezed in a fair amount of air travel during the past three months, had what could be described as an 'interesting' approach on a very windy day flying into Wellington NZ on a Dash 8 turboprop, fairly uneventful otherwise! Great video, thanks Juan.
Wow so sad, another one bites the dust... stopped there a few times in the eighties for late lunch/early dinner returning for the Bay Area to southern Oregon. Also enjoyed stopping at Trinity lake, hope that’s still there. Thanks for jump starting my memories of the great back country places we’d grab those $100 burgers.
Thanks Juan. I saw this off in the distance when I landed at Little River. Next time I'm up in Sonoma I will check it out. I like the fact you can camp there that's always a plus. I flew into Sedona, AZ 2 weeks ago expecting to camp and had to fly to Payson because no camping allowed.
MAN that is a BEAUTIFUL spread there! Complete with a runway and hangar! $2 EXTRA large ... I can only dream. Beautiful Bonanza too! Thanks for taking us along on this one - this was great! 👍
Just missed you. I rode through there on the bike the following week, camping just on the other side of Hells Gate off 36. Great camping that time of year up there. Thanks for sharing the serenity.
Our extended family camps at Ruth Lake every summer for a week. In the simulator I've landed there a few times in a Citabria, I'll have to try the Bonanza.
Been there many times. Ruth has difficult approaches both ends. The other approach you fly into a oneway canyon and don't see the the runway until very short final. Back in the day it was a great place to eat.
Juan, that brings back many fond memories. Did quite a few Grumman fly-ins there back in the 80's. Was a cool place to spend the weekend, they did a great Saturday night BBQ cooked over a California live oak fire they started early in the day. I think the ranch has been on the market for several decades now. The place died with the demise of the logging industry.
What a life to be able to just go camping on a whim at an abandoned runway, in a peaceful quiet lil old town (if that), some nice land and a river nearby. Cool stuff!
Wow. So many memories. My mother was a chef there in the 80's. I spent many summers on that ranch. As a matter of fact, I'm in the commercial. The owner, Larry Brown, his grand daughter Becky is still a family friend and one of my closest childhood friends. Makes me sad it closed.
Ah, thanks for the memories. Only landed there a few times in '82 '84. Had to do a low flyby once to help clear runway of a couple of cows once. I flew a Cessna 150M and downwind to base and final was around a small hill and you would loose sight of runway doing that, but a few local homes would have folks sitting on their decks having a drink and we would give them a wave while going by. Nice old bar just up the hill a short ways back then. Hayfork was another fun place and great for dirt biking.
NICE PLACE....I've been flying into Northern Calif. small airports all summer, I'll have to look this one up....... just did Montaque and Scott Vally... great small airport destinations..... I'm in Grants Pass and it is so much fun to fly South and Back... love your Videos... YEH the Cowboys should own this airport and have fly-in BBQ's and STOL demos on the weekends.
Did you ever run into Mr. Marvin Scott? He us'ed to own about 35 acres somewhere around lake Ruth, said he was going to set up a saw mill up there, mill his own lumber to build his house.
My family owned (99year lease) property on the lake aswell as the yolla bolly wilderness area. I know that area well. Sure do miss it. Sucks when family gets all crazy when it's time to pass it along.
On another note, the owner of SussexNJ, is quite old, the airport has been for sale a long time, BUT he only wants to sell it to anybody in aviation, he does NOT want it to become an industrial park, or housing, as NJ has LOST too many airports in NJ over the years, don’t know how long it is, but an empty B17, a P51G , a B25, and others have flow in for airshows over the years Leo Loudenshlager flew here Shawn D Tucker, The French Connectioon, Jimmy Franklyn, a Twin Beach 18 aerobatic, you name them, they all flew here every year for years even an F80 shooting star.
Fun video, rustles up old memories. I've only landed there opposite direction to your approach. Went with a flying group for activities at the (then operating) dude ranch. Managed the airport OK, but groundlooped on one of their horses...
I have NOT flown, but flew in 2 Vtail Bonanzas, the 1st, we 3 others flew into NY & PA, from CALDWELL WRIGHT back in the late 60s, never knew the owner was color blind., the 2nd we flew out to Pittsburg PA, for a burger/sodas, then to MT POCONO, then back to CDW. Those were the days,
Landed at Ruth several times while a pilot with DEA, but must admit landing a Blackhawk on the numbers is much easier. Nice landing on such an interesting airport.
Wow hustle and bustle of Honolulu? Just move to another island! Your in American paradise! I guess GA is going to show you a (much different) place. Good luck. Happy trails!
Beautiful scenery Juan I don't think I would want to land there at night though looks like the approach might be a little difficult. Thanks for sharing. Have a great week. God Bless!!!
Looking at the hills above Lake Oroville (Bald Rock Rd. for Example) close to half the homes up there have a "grow" in the back yard. Probably harder to find places in California hills that don't have grows all over the place.
Nice landing, as always! Always wanted to be a pilot but I am an A & P mechanic. Have a safe flight in that Bonanza, "The Mighty Luscome" and in your Triple 7!
Here's the listing-www.thecornerstoneway.com/?q=node/278
Must be sold. No longer there.
I recently sold my 40 acre parcel about 5 miles behind the flying AA to the south. final payment was just after the fires. It's a shame nobody wants to rebuild the old Ranch, what a chance to bring back a great place.!!Nice Juan.
I love VEE-tail Bonanza's and have since I was a little kid. You're a lucky man Juan. What a beautiful airplane.
Thanks, Juan! Flew from Eureka (EKA, Murray field) to Ruth in the back seat of a Tripacer way back in 1964. Still looks the same.
What a great vlog. That Bonanza is one sweet looking plane.
SO cool to camp and fly. Beautiful view. Now every pilot is going to go there. You should get a commission on the sale. So neat to have that wilderness around a runway. Great video.

Yes!
Love these surprises, "no particular reason for it, let's just film a landing and standing around". Smiling here, thinking about times I have done something similar. Thanks, Juan.
Thanks Juan! Beautiful country! Great report as always.
What a lovely spot and a gorgeous place to camp. Solitude and beauty. That is a fabulous place to set your wheels down.
Wonderful video Juan! Quiet is good!
Wow - what a gorgeous location. Thanks for sharing.
You inspired me to head up there last Saturday. It was on my bucket list for a couple years. Very rugged terrain between Gravelly Valley and there! Very cool. I landed the opposite way, which was quite a nice surprise approach. Looks dead up there and they no longer have it for sale.
Captivating travelog, Juan! "Dogleg"?! I was white-knuckled at that point LOL! Beautiful Trinities--as you say, so remote! Thanks so much for sharing!
just love that Bonanza. nice landing!!
Great photo of the quite. Toe to Toe with the silence.
Juan, you are flying an Antique..!! Beautiful Northern California..~~!!
newer than the Luscombe...
Fun video, well done Captain!
That was a MAJOR memory shaker! I believe that Harold, my mother and myself flew the Corbin Jr Ace into Ruth once! ThanksJuan! Fun stuff!
Corbin!
Would love to see more of you just at camp....doing nothing in particular, just spending some time there, maybe add that at the end..:)
Always nice to see a heavy iron pilot keeping core skills sharp flying manually in different aircraft.
Yes!
I liked watching that approach. Love your Bonanza and that split windshield. Awsum!!
The most enjoyable 5 minutes I've had since arriving home from my extended travels was watching that video! what?! That stinks.
beautiful spot! holy cow! enjoy!

Beautiful Bonanza too! Thanks for taking us along on this one - this was great! 👍
Runway is county owned.
Boy, do I miss flying; thanks for the trip.

DAD !!!! OUTSTANDING !!! Thanks !!!!
Nice! I want to fly my Pacer in there sometime. Thanks for another sweet video Juan.
I love those V-tails, they're so pretty.
Great camera angle and clarity on this video Juan... Good job. Thanks for sharing.
WOW, V tail Bonanza, had a model of one when I was a boy. Beautiful spot there Juan; thanks for taking us along. Ride/fly safe!
Been there many times. Ruth has difficult approaches both ends. The other approach you fly into a oneway canyon and don't see the the runway until very short final. Back in the day it was a great place to eat.
That looked like fun.
I was there in 1988 on a camp contract, loved it,
Love the old C35. spent a lot of time in one of those as well as newer ones. The old ones are lighter and fly the best.
Juan, that brings back many fond memories. Did quite a few Grumman fly-ins there back in the 80's. At $2 mil, it may be a few more decades...

Juan, a nice vacation from the wind, rain and snow. Thanks!
What a beautiful area! Thanks for taking us there.
We landed there about 30 years ago. We spent the night in one of the rental tents on the deck. Kind of sad they're closing. The restaurant was nice.
The best small plane ever built. Imho. And a great job landing it.
I could get in there with my Varieze, but looks like a one-way runway.
Nope, 2 way. I landed and took off the other way in a 182
Another nice one
amazing!
very nice flying skills! cheers!
What a nice place to fly into.
Had no idea that place was there. I worked as a teenager in Alder Point and Zenia on a hydro project - great memories!
Wonderful low wing ground effect landing.
Nice 'lil getaway, appreciate the share, Juan! Enjoy the quiet & serenity up yonder 👍😊
What a beautiful area! Thanks for sharing!
Did you ever run into Mr. Marvin Scott? He us'ed to own about 35 acres somewhere around lake Ruth, said he was going to set up a saw mill up there, mill his own lumber to build his house.
No "Mighty Luscombe"?
This approach kinda reminds me of Innsbruck. Very nice!
Beautiful. Nor-Cal.
Hi Juan. Didn't you stop at this airport a while back? Seems like a nice; very quiet. 😁
My grandfather Frank Sylvestri used to fly us every summer to the flying AA ranch. Best memories ever!!
You are the best Jaun always so very informative .... maybe a show on the new FireHawk;s at Cal Fire aviation , capabilities and limitations ?
Yep, big MAFFS training update inbound...
My family owned (99year lease) property on the lake aswell as the yolla bolly wilderness area. I know that area well. Sure do miss it. Sucks when family gets all crazy when it's time to pass it along.
Nothing like a death in the family to bring out the worst...

I miss flying so much :(
Now thats a nice place to camp out for a few days.
My old stompin' grounds. Great to see again, thanks!

Good one Juan, DWR put up a new update, time to explain to us the purpose of the cut off wall
will do!
Landed at Ruth several times while a pilot with DEA, but must admit landing a Blackhawk on the numbers is much easier. Nice landing on such an interesting airport.
Fun video! Thanks
Very nice Juan! Thanks for the ride. Cheers, Dan
Can't wait to move out of the hustle and bustle of Honolulu to the serenity of the GA pines in 40 days.
what part of GA you moving to
Up on Clarks Hill Lake between Thomson and Athens.
God Bless!!!
yes, day VFR.
Im going to camp with the family at Ruth lake in our toy hauler trailer in 35 days .....Thanks posting your videos. signed Joe Silva in Eureka ca.
Nice little video.
That's a spread worthy of being called a *_Ranch._*
Looked like a nice smooth landing.
Very cool Juan! You said it brother, that is one sweet spot!
That's a great video, puts you right in the cockpit.
Wonderful! A delight to watch!
Nicely done Sir. Thanks for the video, I love flying, but with my back it's no bueno amigo.
Super video. Thank you
Beautiful landing! In the numbers!!
Where is the 'mighty luskum?'
Great video Juan Heard you were on a camp trip. Bring Pete up to the San Juan in the luscombe this summer.
Cool Video, cool plane, cool everything, thanks for sharing
Nice...
V35? Nice little bird.
It's so weird how the bumps and turbulence seem like mad savages trying to club their way in!😜
That was a fun Video!
Haven’t thought about that place since my PA-22 days. Sad about the AA. Thanks a ton!
Really enjoyed this video!
