Thanks so much for covering this subject. I also use water crystals. My bins were getting inundated with gnats until I decided to cover the crystals with my substrate. Now, the crystals aren't easily available for the gnats to infest and lay eggs.
As I mentioned before. I would have NEVER have thought of using crystals! Are there ANY concerns on whether the polymers are passed on to the animals or not? Thanks
Thank you so much 😊hopefully in the next topic about the parasite in the super worm because the small super worm that was given to me has small crawling parasites that crawl on the smooth surface
No, they are not harmful to mealworms. I've been using them for several years now and have noticed no decline in their health, activity, or growth rates.
Did you know the water gel crystals that you use cause cancer. They contain a strongly suspected carcinogen. Called polyacrylamide its a man made synthethic super absorbant salt. Look up the safty data sheet . They also use this as a binder in shampoo and lotion. Just thought you might want to know what your playing with should have stuck with carrots. May save you money but in the end your poisoning Yourself and the reptiles that eat these worms

I'm so glad this was helpful! Good tip on the gnats, once those little buggers get established they are so hard to get rid of sometimes!
very interesting.... could you enable automatic youtube subtitles? would make it easier for other languages thank you very much
I'd love to add the captions, but it looks like TH-cam only offers that when you have 1000+ subscribers. If there's another way, I'm game to try it!

It's likely that something passes through, but nothing reported to me or anyone I have heard about negative impacts.

Does the water crystals affect your ability to sift your worms? Does it make anything clump together?
The mealworms eat them completely, the only issue is if too much is added then they dry out. Dried ones are a pain.
Are the crystals harmful to the worms? Will they affect the nutrients of the worms?

I put some water gel crystals with my beetles and now there are red spots where the gel is/was. What is that? Is it ok for the beetles?
What kind of water gel crystals did you use?

@@scrapzwtf I'd ask them what their thoughts are. If it's multipurpose, maybe there's something in there the insects don't like.
700-800 is enormous. I think everyone agrees😂
