So glad you pointed out the fact that in louder parts of the song the hi hat bleed would be worse. So many videos of gating a snare have only shown closed hi hat passages of their songs and said problem solved! 👍

Fantastic technique, I've been trying this out on all my drums and it's brilliant, the F6 is a really nice little tool often overlooked, thanks for doing what you do in helping us, really appreciate it!

Never thought of using the F6 as a gate. Nice!

DUDE!!! Thank you!!! I've been doing it old school, literally editing out bleed!!!!

This technique works great with singing/speaking mics too. Our room is very reverberant and it works great on the pulpit mic to cut out the extra noise and it sounds more transparent than gating the mic.

Absolutely! With speaking mics, I’ve also had great success with doing a similar technique with the Waves C4. I may do a follow up video showing that one.
Thanks for watching and commenting, Brian!

Thank you, this was very helpful! I will try to apply this technique in my next videos. I had given up on using gates and was trying to just deal with the cymbals bleed, but as you said, this might be a gamechanger for me!!

Hey it’s sounding great! What reverb are you using on the snare?

Probably TAL-Verb III, which is actually a free plugin. It’s great. Can do some really cool things with it, too :)

Having separate release times on the different bands is super useful when using as a gate, as per this example. However, too bad there are no separate filters in the detector. I tried this on the snare, but the kick causes the hi-frequency expander to open. Having a separately adjustable band pass filter on the detector, like many gates, would make this application for a dynamic EQ work great. This could give more control of the gate opening and reduce high hat and kick from triggering the gate.

      Agreed

@@AWTechTuesday You could duplicate the snare track, add band pass filter, and turn monitoring off on the dup. Then trigger the sc of the F6 with the filtered dup track. Less convenient on the fly, but it would work, and probably yield better results than a traditional gate.
      Great video by the way!

Is there a way to do something similar to this on the X32?

You may be able to do it with the Combinator plugin built into the X32’s rack effects but I’m not 100% on that. Even if it did work, you’re somewhat limited in how many instances of that are available for use.
Your best bet on an X32 would be to dive into the sidechain EQ and work with your attack and release times to clear out as much bleed as possible while avoiding choking the channel too much. Check out this video for audio examples - m.th-cam.com/video/ux5DvGUfr08/w-d-xo.html
I’m using a waves plugin but the setting a on an X32 are about the same.
You can also run Waves on an X32 if you want to use the F6 and other waves options - m.th-cam.com/video/whHv6l6sxSE/w-d-xo.html
      Hope that helps :)

Is the Waves F6 Dynamic EQ on the X32?

    • @AWTechTuesday
      @AWTechTuesday  3 ปีที่แล้ว

No. Closest thing is the Combinator. There are different options for connecting Waves plugins through a Waves server or a computer but no dynamic EQs built in, unfortunately :(

Ringy snare ;-( I think if you run the snare frequency up some, you might eliminate the kick's beater sound tending to trigger the filter when you have the threshold low.
