Inland Istria: Croatia's Greatest Tourism Success Story

  • Tourism in Croatia is based on the spectacular Adriatic coast and islands - and with good reason.
    But take a moment away from the beach to discover a totally different Croatia, one which is less reliant on sun and beach, and more on food, wine, olive oil, nature, and adventure tourism.
    Now take a journey to inland Istria, which was hardly known for tourism 30 years ago, but which today is leading the way in high-quality sustainable tourism, having reinvented itself as a top gourmet destination, with a sustainable approach focusing on quality, quality, quality.
    Today, the world knows Istria for its excellent olive oil (the best region in the world), fine wines, and outstanding truffles and cuisine. But it was not always thus. Probably my favourite success story in Croatian tourism on a macro scale.

      There are a LOT of positives in Croatian tourism on the ground, especially in the private sector.

    I've been to inland Istria around 2014, it was late spring. I didn't expect much, but I was stunned by the beauty of the landscape, little rivers and forests, fascinating ruins (Dvigrad) and cute little towns (almost every on a hill), from which one could view green fields below. It was incredible.

    Istra is on another level tourist-wise. You should mention small game hunting, business seminars, active/adrenalin parks..

      @@PaulBradbury The idea for the Istrian inland starred soon after the war. But politics was a big brake and they didn't see the potential or didn't want to! But not only the Adriatic Sea is a sight in Croatia, we have much more to offer.

    I live in Zagreb, but I have been coming to Istria at least once a year since 2010. One of the biggest reasons is visiting thr wineries and olive oil manufacturers. I reccomend that to all my friends - try it there and buy from the source. Not only is that a wonderful experience, but also the prices of those products can reach their triple worth in Zagreb, especially in restaurants.
    Paul, thank you once more for an interesting video! Greetings from Korčula, you got many admirers here!

    Perfect like always, just a little correction. Istria wine is Malvazija, with Z, and Malvasija , with S, is from Konavle, Dubrovnik.

    • @PaulBradbury
      @PaulBradbury  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      and I thought it was the Brits and the Americans who had the issues with S and Z - thanks!

    Muškat momjanski / Moscato di Momiano became the 18th Croatian wine with a protected designation of origin in the EU. It's so good! Produced by Sanmauro (they also do amazing steaks), Prelac, Kozlovic and Kabola.
