We discarded our spark arrester on our stovepipe after it kept clogging up and affecting the draft. We had problems with embers burning holes in plastic tarp and we worried about the canvas. We got a couple of pieces of 4'x8'rolled aluminum sheet from our member who worked in an aluminum mill. We drilled holes for ropes and placed it to protect our roof. Inexpensive. We also learned never to use papers to start fire. Charcoal lighter or a propane torch is a better way. I might have sealed your repair with rubberized spray for extra measure outside and inside.
